The Christian Institute tackles English rugby regulator over Bible row

The Christian Institute has written to rugby’s national governing body calling into question its impartiality.

It follows England player James Haskell saying taking an orthodox view of the Bible is a ‘road map to killing people’.

So far he has received no sanction from the Rugby Football Union (RFU), but another English player – Billy Vunipola – has been disciplined for expressing Christian views.

Sacked

The letter follows a row over an Instagram post from Australian international Israel Folau, which resulted in him being sacked.

Vunipola ‘liked’ the social media message and also posted about his Christian view that sex should be reserved for opposite sex marriage.

Writing to the Head of Discipline at the RFU, Institute Director Colin Hart said: “Vunipola believes himself to have fallen short of God’s standards. He holds to mainstream Christian teaching that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

“He holds to the Easter message of hope that sins can be forgiven through trusting in Christ’s death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead.”

Reasonable

Mr Hart added: “The belief that sex is only for marriage is a belief worthy of respect in a democratic society” which was “recently re-affirmed by the Supreme Court in Ashers bakery case”.

He asked if the RFU could “confirm that it is willing to engage players who agree with this view about marriage”.

While Mr Hart acknowledged the proper place for social media rules, he said they “must be clear and reasonable, and they must be applied consistently and without discrimination”.

Brett Kavanaugh to Teach at George Mason Despite Student Protests

Brett Kavanaugh to Teach at George Mason Despite Student Protests

George Mason University students organized, collected 10,000 signatures, and met with administrators in hopes of convincing them to rescind their invitation to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to teach a class this summer. Their efforts failed to convince administrators to reverse course.

According to CBN News, Justice Kavanaugh signed a contract to teach one class each of the next three summers at the University’s Antonin Scalia Law School campus in the United Kingdom. Students opposed Kavanaugh’s presence on campus because of accusations that he sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when the two were teenagers in the early 1980s.

George Mason’s Student Government Association, along with an advocacy group called Mason for Survivors, organized a town hall in which administrators met with students for more than two hours last week. For the first hour, administrators heard students tell their stories of being sexually assaulted. Then, the administrators responded to a set of prescreened questions.

When pushed on retracting Kavanaugh’s contract, University President Angel Cabrera told students that the school’s reputation is at stake and that students must accept the decision even if they find it difficult to swallow. He said, “Even if the outcome is painful, what’s at stake is very, very important to the integrity of the university.

American actor criticises coverage of Sri Lanka attacks and says politicians aren’t calling victims ‘Christian’

She also pointed out that many politicians are seemingly avoiding using the word ‘Christian’, by retweeting screenshots of tweets by Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton and Julian Castro referring to the victims as ‘Easter worshippers’.

Her main concern was that Special counsel Robert Mueller was approached by a reporter from US channel MSNBC as he was getting in his car on Sunday, asking him about whether he will testify before Congress about his report into potential collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia in the 2016 election.

The lawyer was asked to do an investigation into the matter but found no interference. However, Mueller did say that it was a difficult decision not to charge Trump with obstructing the justice process because of his attempts to get rid of people investigating him.

In response to the reporter’s questions, Mueller replied: “No comment” and got in his car, which was followed by the reporter back in the studio saying; “I think it’s accurate to characterise the Director Mueller today as ‘tight-lipped’ in response to my questions!”

Christian actor Heaton said: “Today is Easter Sunday, the holiest day of the Christian calendar. Some of the faithful were murdered today while they worshiped. But you ambush Robert Mueller outside of his church and chuckle about it afterward. This is loathesome. Shame on you.”

Sri Lankan minister says Easter Sunday attacks are ‘retaliation for Christchurch mosque shooting’

Sri Lanka’s defence minister said the government had information that the bombings – which have killed at least 321 people – were in response to last month’s shootings in Christchurch.

Ruwan Wijewardene did not disclose evidence to support his claim. He also accused security agencies of “weakness” which failed to prevent the nine blasts.

He told Parliament: “By now it has been established that the intelligence units were aware of this attack and a group of responsible people were informed about the impending attack.

“However, this information has been circulated among only a few officials.”

A three-minute national silence was marked on Tuesday to remember the bombings, while mass funerals for some of the victims were held.

It seems warnings from international intelligence bodies that a local militant group was preparing attacks were not passed on to the prime minister’s office until after the killings, Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Christian Reformed Church in Sri Lanka urged believers in the UK to uphold the country in prayer.

President of the church, Shirley Faber said: “Children are remaining without parents and, sometimes, parents have lost their children.

Co-pastoring is rare but is also seen in some churches in different forms. Today we discuss the pros and cons of co-pastoring and some paths forward for the practice.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Even with a plurality of elders, there typically ends up being a singular leader and not co-pastors.
  • Shared leadership often means shared responsibility.
  • Competing egos can often become a problem in co-pastor situations.
  • Usually, co-pastors have similar gifts rather than complementary ones and that leads to tension.

The eight aspects of co-pastoring we discuss are:

  1. We must first understand true co-pastoring.
  2. Co-pastoring is rare.
  3. Co-pastoring is rarely effective.
  4. Shared responsibility is a positive.
  5. Shared work responsibility is a positive.
  6. The pastors must both keep their egos in check.
  7. Complementary giftedness is rare.
  8. Usually one of the pastors emerges as the leader.

Churches invited to register interest in new cash for security improvements

Bids for a share of the £1.6 million Places of Worship scheme – funding extra protection and security measures – will be accepted from July this year, the Home Office added.

Speaking on Good Friday, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: “In the coming days and weeks, millions of people from different faiths will be marking religious festivals up and down the UK.

“At this time of reflection, devotion and celebration, it’s vital everyone feels safe and protected in the places of worship they attend.

“That’s why we’ve invested another £1.6 million into our Places of Worship Protective Security Scheme and are encouraging religious organisations to apply.”

Funding for the scheme and improvements to the application process were announced in the wake of the mosque attacks in Christchurch which left 50 people dead.

Minister for Counter Extremism Baroness Williams said: “No one should be abused or attacked, because of their faith.

“The Government is committed to not only pursuing perpetrators of these horrendous crimes but also protecting victims.

“The Hate Crime Action Plan, refreshed in 2018, commits to providing the Places of Worship scheme, as well as funding community-led projects to tackle hate crime and increase reporting of these crimes.”

Chip and Joanna Gaines make the ‘Time 100’: Three ways the church can change the world

Joanna and Chip Gaines made the Time 100 this year.

Tim Tebow’s article about them applauds “the genuine passion they have for making a difference in people’s lives.” He adds, “They are also grounded in a strong faith, which keeps them focused on what truly matters in life.”

Any time followers of Jesus make the news because of their cultural relevance, the kingdom advances and God is glorified. As we noted yesterday, Christians across history have made an amazing difference in our world. From women’s rights to the Scientific Revolution, educational excellence, modern medicine, and the abolition of slavery, believers have played a crucial role in human flourishing.

However, it seems that many today see the church as less relevant than Christians. Far less, in fact.

How many religious Americans go to church?

Last Sunday, most churches experienced their highest attendance of the year. Next Sunday, many of these congregations will see half the numbers they witnessed on Easter.

Our culture has already moved past the holiday considered by Christian tradition to be the highest and holiest day of the year. Except for references to Sunday’s tragedy in Sri Lanka and post-Easter sales in stores, the day seems to be over.

Of course, the risen Christ is just as alive and just as relevant today as when he first rose from the dead. But his church seems to be less so.

According to Gallup, church membership in America is down from 70 percent in 1999 to 50 percent today. One factor is the rise of the “nones”: the number of Americans who say they have no religious affiliation has grown from 10 percent in 1998 to 23 percent today.

However, the number of self-identified religious Americans with no church membership is surprising. In the year 2000, 73 percent of those with a religious preference belonged to a church, compared with 64 percent today.

And church attendance is a significant issue as well. While…

Man released over paint attack on County Antrim church

The 26 year old was detained on suspicion of criminal damage following the incident at the Sacred Heart Church on Doagh Road in Ballyclare.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Police Service in Northern Ireland added: “A 35 year old woman was also cautioned for assisting an offender as part of the investigation.”

“Police would like to thank the local community for their assistance and we would continue to appeal to anyone with any information in relation to this incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 438 21/4/19.”

Officers said several “paint bombs” were thrown at the building between midnight and a morning mass service on Easter Sunday.

Commenting at the time, they said: “Any right minded person can see the pain and anguish that this would cause.”

Christian adoption agency lifts barrier to gay couples

Bethany Christian Services in Michigan, USA said its policies will meet a legal requirement that agencies handling state contracts do not turn away homosexual couples.

Civil rights campaigners had claimed the Grand Rapids-based organisation was unfairly discriminating against same-sex couples wanting to adopt.

They took state officials to court over their decision to award contracts to Bethany Christian Services – and another agency, St Vincent Catholic Charities.

Settling the lawsuit, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said all agencies working with the state must adhere to a 2015 law which prohibits discrimination against gay prospective parents.

Bethany Christian Services said: “We are disappointed with how this settlement agreement has been implemented by the state government.

“Nonetheless, Bethany will continue operations in Michigan, in compliance with our legal contract requirements.”

Bob Wheaton, a Michigan Department of Health spokesman, said “the department is pleased that the department will be able to continue its long-standing partnership with Bethany in providing services to children and…
