No suspect identified in nearly half of some religious and race hate cases

In the twelve months to September 2018, 46 per cent of such offences recorded by Greater Manchester Police were shut with no suspect in the frame, while West Midlands Police closed 44 per cent.

Other forces closed around a third, including British Transport Police (37 per cent), Northumbria (33 per cent) and Sussex (31 per cent).

The offences – all of which are defined as hate crimes – include racially or religiously aggravated assault, harassment and criminal damage.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission described the figures as “disappointing”, adding that victims of these offences often don’t report what has happened to them “as they feel that the police won’t take the incident seriously or have the power to act”.

Independent charity Victim Support warned the figures could undermine public confidence in the ability of the justice system to report hate crime.

Greater Manchester Police acknowledged it had “a lot of work to do” to ensure hate crimes were dealt with “in the best ways that we can”, while West Midlands Police said it was determined to follow “all active lines of inquiry to trace suspects”.

The analysis has been compiled by the Press Association based on data published by the Home Office. It reveals that:

– A total of 28% of all racially and religiously-aggravated offences recorded in England and Wales…

LifeWay Christian Resources to Close All Stores in 2019

LifeWay Christian Resources to Close All Stores in 2019

(RNS) — LifeWay Christian Resources announced Wednesday (March 20) it will close all 170 of its brick-and-mortar stores this year.

That comes as LifeWay, the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, shifts its resources online, according to the announcement on LifeWay’s Facts & Trends website. It will continue to offer resources through its website, customer resource center and network of partners who work directly with churches.

“The decision to close our local stores is a difficult one,” LifeWay acting President and CEO Brad Waggoner said in the announcement.

“LifeWay has developed close connections with the communities where our stores are located, and we have been honored to serve those communities. We will continue serving local congregations as they meet the spiritual needs of their neighbors.”

The digital shift comes amid declining customer traffic and sales, according to LifeWay.

And it follows the closure of other major Christian retailers, such as the United Methodist Church’s Cokesbury stores, which closed in 2012, and Family Christian Stores, which closed its stores in 2017. At the time, Family Christian was considered the world’s largest retailer of Christian-themed merchandise.

LifeWay had acquired another chain, Berean Christian Stores, in 2013.

“It’s just one more loss in the industry,” said Wendy Lawton, a literary agent…

Home Office refuses asylum and questions man’s understanding of ‘peaceful Christianity’

Nathan Stevens who describes himself as an Immigration case worker has posted excerpts from the Home Office letter on twitter.

It contains quotes from Leviticus, Matthew, Exodus and Revelation.

It’s alleged the asylum seeker had described Christianity as a religion of peace in contrast to Islam as a religion of violence and so the letter contains Biblical extracts randomly quoted to demonstrate that the Christian Bible contains examples of violence.

Nathan Stevens describes himself on Twitter as: “genuinely shocked to read this unbelievably offensive diatribe being used to justify a refusal of asylum.”

A Home Office spokesperson said:

“This letter is not in accordance with our policy approach to claims based on religious persecution, including conversions to a particular faith.

“We continue to work closely with key partners, including the APPG on International Freedom of Religion and a range of faith groups, to improve our policy guidance and training provided to asylum decision-makers so that we approach claims involving religious conversion in the…

Most US Christians Find Trump Signing Bibles Inappropriate, Poll Finds

Most US Christians Find Trump Signing Bibles Inappropriate, Poll Finds

(RNS) — If Donald Trump were the pope or another Christian leader, the majority of U.S. Christians likely wouldn’t have minded that he signed a Bible.

Only 39 percent of Christians in the U.S. think it would be inappropriate for a pastor, priest or Christian leader to sign the cover of a Bible. Similarly, 35 percent think it would be inappropriate for the pope to do the same.

But a Morning Consult poll released Monday (March 18) shows nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of Christians in the U.S. found it inappropriate when Trump signed the covers of at least two Bibles earlier this month at a Southern Baptist church in Alabama while visiting a community recovering from a deadly tornado outbreak.

The poll comes after videos posted online showed people holding out their Bibles to the president and first lady Melania Trump to sign. Slate reported that a 12-year-old boy was the first to ask Trump to autograph his Bible. Other photos show the president’s signature scrawled in large writing across the covers of a pair of Bibles.

Two-thirds (64 percent) of all U.S. adults, including non-Christians, view that action as inappropriate, according to Morning Consult.

More white evangelical Protestants in the U.S. — who overwhelmingly voted for Trump in 2016 and continue to largely support the president, according to the same poll — found it inappropriate (45 percent)…

Bishop says HS2 rail project is a ‘sin’

The Rt Rev Peter Forster, argued the £55.7 billion scheme was “unnecessarily expensive” during a debate in the House of Lords on the Chancellor’s recent Spring Statement.

Bishop Peter told peers: “If you want to find good things to tax, I always say start with sin. Find a new sin and tax it.

“I rather agree that HS2 is a sin.

“Not for having capacity, which I am all in favour of, but in doing it in such an unnecessarily expensive way.

“Trains go quite fast enough for me as they are.

“It could have been done far more cheaply.”

Former Treasury chief Lord Macpherson of Earl’s Court backed his comments.

The independent crossbencher, who was permanent secretary at the Treasury for eleven years, said: “Public investment needs to be focused on projects which yield the highest return.

“That probably means more expenditure on roads and I know I am in a minority but it also suggests that we should cancel HS2.”

Meanwhile, a new report from the New Economics Foundation has found that 40 per cent of the benefits of the HS2 project would go to London and that the £56bn budget would be better spent on upgrading the existing network and smaller-scale local projects.

Bishop Peter also called for the government to do more to help tackle the “chronic lack” of low-cost and social housing.

He said: “As I look at the housing issues, it just seems to me there is something missing in the…

Tony Blair says praying to God to solve Brexit crisis isn’t sensible

Speaking to BBC2’s Newsnight, Mr Blair, who switched from the Anglican church to Catholicism soon after leaving Downing Street, said: “You can be as religious as you like but the thing about praying to God is he doesn’t tell you what the level of minimum wage is.

“I don’t know what God’s view of Brexit is and I don’t think it’s a sensible enquiry to have.”

Mr Blair also rejected reports that he was plotting with French president Emmanuel Macron to force a new vote.

While the Labour member backs a second referendum that could see Britain stay in the EU, he denied telling European leaders to “hold firm” and pressure the Prime Minister into holding a new poll.

He asked: “How am I undermining it [Brexit]?

“I’m saying the country should come to a view in Parliament and if Parliament can’t make up its mind or decides it wants to – you put it back to the people.

“What I’m saying to people privately in Europe is what I’m saying publicly.”

He also called for a delay of nine to twelve months to give Parliament enough time to decide whether it wants a “soft Brexit, hard Brexit or no Brexit”, with or without a second referendum.

Mr Blair described the Conservative Government as being “in a state of dysfunction”.

He added: “Theresa May has taken this kind of extraordinary narrow view of this situation and just said ‘Right, here…

Jordan Peterson accuses Cambridge University of ‘serious error’ after withdrawing fellowship offer

The Faculty of Divinity said an initial invitation to the psychology professor had been rescinded following “a further review”. Some students had protested against the visiting fellowship.

A controversial figure, Prof Peterson has attracted attention for his outspoken views on gender, race, political correctness and climate change.

In a response published on his website, he said: “I think the Faculty of Divinity made a serious error of judgement in rescinding their offer to me.”

Prof Peterson had previously said he was looking forward to spending two months at the university, as part of plans to produce a lecture series about the biblical book of Exodus.

The 56-year-old said he had been in talks with the Faculty of Divinity about giving talks to students which would have been of “mutual benefit” to all parties concerned.

The Faculty said: “Jordan Peterson requested a visiting fellowship at the Faculty of Divinity, and an initial offer has been rescinded after a further review.”

A spokesperson for Cambridge University was quoted by the Guardian as saying: “[Cambridge] is an inclusive environment and we expect all our staff and visitors to uphold our principles.

“There is no place here for anyone who cannot.”

Meanwhile, the withdrawal of the visiting fellowship was welcomed by the Cambridge University Students’ Union.

In a statement seen by the newspaper, the Union…

A giant meteor explosion and the dangers of sugary drinks and cannabis: We are mortal and immortal

A gigantic meteor exploded over our planet last December. The blast generated energy equivalent to 173 kilotons of TNT, ten times the energy produced by the atomic bomb used in Hiroshima in 1945.

Why are we only now hearing about this? The explosion was over the Bering Sea, a remote location in the middle of the ocean.

Closer to home, a Harvard-led study has found that people who drink two or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day have a 31 percent higher risk of early death from cardiovascular disease. Each additional soda or sports drink increases the risk by 10 percent.

In other health news, daily marijuana use has been linked to an increased risk of developing psychosis. People who used any type of cannabis on a daily basis were three times more likely to have a diagnosis of a new episode of psychosis. The risk increased to five times for daily use of high potency cannabis.

From the cyclone in Mozambique that killed hundreds, to the dangerous storms threatening the Northeast today, to reports that the New Zealand terror suspect planned a third attack before he was apprehended, each day’s news reminds us that we are mortal.

But we are immortal as well.

I have often quoted C. S. Lewis’s profound observation: “You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilization—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”

An altar seven hundred years older than Abraham

The intersection of our finitude and our immortality powerfully impressed me yesterday as our Israel study group visited the ancient fortress of Megiddo. A Canaanite altar here dates to 2700 BC—seven hundred years older than Abraham.

Megiddo is an elevated site near a water source and adjacent to a major highway (known as the Via Maris). These factors made it a critical military post….

How to Pray Effectively – Joyce Meyer Devotional 21 March 2019

Topic: How to Pray Effectively [Joyce Meyer Devotional 20 March 2019]

[Yes] I will grant [I Myself will do for you] whatever you shall ask in My Name [as presenting all that I AM]. — John 14:14 (AMPC)

I reached a point in my prayer life where I felt frustrated, so I began to seek God about it. I wanted the assurance that my prayers were being effective. I wanted to have confidence that when I prayed, power was released to work in the situation I had prayed about. I wanted those things, but to be honest, I didn’t have that assurance or confidence.

Satan definitely wants to steal our confidence concerning prayer. Many people express the same frustrations that I felt. They pray, but all the while they’re wondering if they are being effective. What is wrong? I believe that we mistakenly think that we need to be perfect in order to have power in prayer, but we don’t. That is why we have been given the name of Jesus in which to pray!

When we pray in Jesus’ name, we are presenting to God the Father all that Jesus is, not what we are. Thankfully, I don’t pray in Joyce’s name; if I did I would never accomplish anything! The Holy Spirit helps us pray as we ought to, and the name of Jesus guarantees the answer!

Be bold in prayer because you have the name above every other name, and at the mention of that name, every knee must bow (see Philippians 2:10). Pray boldly, expecting results!

Prayer Starter: Thank You, Father, that I can come to You boldly in prayer, knowing that You love to hear from me. Increase my level of expectation and help me to make prayer an easy, simple, natural part of my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Six Common Misperceptions about Revitalization

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

There are some misperceptions and misconceptions about church revitalization that we hear often. Today, we tackle six of them.

Some highlights from today’s episode:

  • Revitalization isn’t only about dying churches, it’s about churches who may just need a shift in perspective and focus.
  • There are people around every church to be reached, but churches aren’t reaching them.
  • Every church should have demographics for their area of ministry.
  • A new pastor is not a silver bullet for church growth.

The six misperceptions that we discuss are:

  1. It’s only about dying churches.
  2. It’s totally related to demographics.
  3. Churches that need revitalization have little or no money.
  4. The primary need is a new pastor.
  5. It is largely about music and worship style.
  6. The denomination needs to provide a fix.

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Biblical Worship is the foundation for church revitalization. Biblical worship leads us to listen to Jesus and in listening to Him he will reveal His plan is for his church. The North American mission board is pleased to present a revitalization worship summit August 26 and 27 at the North American Mission Board in Alpharetta Georgia. Leading the Summit will be Thom Rainer , Mike Harland the director LifeWay worship, Jared Wilson from Midwestern Baptist seminary Along with guest musical artist Andrew Peterson. This summit will feature main conference sessions and specialized…
