49 Killed, 20 Injured in Christchurch Mosques in Deadliest Mass Shooting in New Zealand History

49 people were killed Friday when several people opened fire in two New Zealand mosques.

According to the BBC, 49 people were killed and 20 injured in mass shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch in New Zealand Friday.

Attackers entered the houses of worship during Friday prayer services resulting in the deadliest shooting in New Zealand’s history.

According to USA Today, four people have been taken into custody, including one shooter – a 28-year-old Australian citizen – who live streamed the massacre on Facebook.

Police are urging people not to watch the “extremely distressing” video as social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Reddit work to remove all footage of the event posted to their platforms.

The BBC reports that three men and one woman were detained, one of whom – a man in his late twenties – has already been charged with murder for his role in the mass shootings. Police Commissioner Mike Bush also confirmed that additional firearms and explosives were also recovered when the believed shooters were detained.

As for the shooters’ motivation, USA Today reports that a manifesto was posted to social media by one of the shooters listing white-nationalists and declaring anti-immigrant ideology.

According to Euro News, many of those in the mosques were refugees and migrants…

‘Criticism is a right…abuse is evil’, Justin Welby on Brexit

Justin Welby has been speaking in a week which has seen the chances of Britain delaying its exit from the EU increased.

He’s called on Christians to pray for those involved in the process.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “MPs & staff have worked hard and voted bravely on the hardest questions of our time.

“Criticism is a right: abuse against MPs & staff is evil, a betrayal of our freedom.

“Let us pray with thanks for them and reject threats, trolling and insult. It’s unworthy of our country.”

PA Wire

On Thursday, MPs backed a bid to push-back Brexit beyond the scheduled date of March 29 in dramatic parliamentary scenes which saw a majority of the Conservative party in the opposite lobby from the Prime Minister.

European leaders will now consider whether to agree to UK calls for Britain’s departure to be delayed.

Maine’s Governor Proposes Bill Permitting Nurses to Perform Abortions

Maine’s Governor Proposes Bill Permitting Nurses to Perform Abortions

Maine’s Democratic governor, Janet Mills, proposed a bill Thursday that would let physician assistants and nurses perform abortions, saying such a change in law is needed to broaden the access to “reproductive health care.”

The bill, LD 1261, would allow an advanced practice registered nurse or a physician assistant perform abortions. Under current Maine law, only doctors can perform abortions.

The law would increase the number of abortion clinics in the state from three to 18, according to supporters.

“Every woman in Maine should be able to access reproductive health care when and where she needs it, regardless of her zip code,” Gov. Janet Mills said. “Allowing advanced nurse practitioners and physician assistants to perform medication-administered abortions, which are already permitted in other states, will ensure Maine women, especially in rural areas of our state, can access reproductive health care services. It is time to remedy this inequity that negatively impacts too many Maine women.”

The ACLU and Planned Parenthood have pushed for such a change to the law, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Already, eight states permit medical personnel other than doctors to perform abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, opposes the bill.

“We just feel…

New Zealand mosque shooting: how the Church responded

Here’s what they had to say:

Cardinal Vincent Nichols

The news of the massacre in the New Zealand mosques is deeply shocking and has caused us all great pain. We pray for the many victims, for the wounded and for the whole community, which has been severely affected by this act of terrorism. May God free us from these tragedies and sustain the efforts of all those who work for peace, harmony and coexistence.

Quakers in Britain

Quakers in Britain are upholding and praying for all affected by the terrorist attack in Christchurch.

Paul Parker, Recording Clerk for Quakers in Britain, said, “We condemn all acts of violence. We stand in love and solidarity with the Muslim community in New Zealand and around the world. We all have a role to play in challenging hate.”

Council of Christians and Jews

As Christians and Jews we stand in solidarity with the Muslim community today and always. Hatred of the other is eating away at what is most beautiful and should be most treasured in our society- namely our diversity.

Church in Wales International Group

In common with all people of faith and goodwill, we are horrified by the attacks on worshippers at Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the face of this kind of hatred, it is more important than ever that we reach out in friendship and solidarity to our neighbours. We pray that God…

Couple Beaten, Congregation Member Missing in Persecution of Church in China

Couple Beaten, Congregation Member Missing in Persecution of Church in China

March 15, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Following the arrest of 44 worshipers from house church meetings in southwestern China in February, police in Chengdu this month arrested a married couple from the church and beat them during interrogation, the church reported.

The couple, identified as Liu and his wife Xing, of Early Rain Covenant Church, were visiting Christian friends when police from Chengdu Shuyuan Police Station on March 2 detained them and took them to Taisheng Road Police Station for interrogation, according to the church, whose pastor along with more than 100 others was arrested in a Dec. 9 raid.

“At 2 p.m., while being interrogated, they were personally humiliated, abused, and violently beaten by seven to eight police officers from the Chengdu Taisheng Road Police Station,” the church’s March 2 statement on Facebook reads. “They were detained for nearly eight hours. After being beaten by police officers from the Taisheng Road Police Station, sister Xing and her husband were escorted by an unidentified person back to their home.”

The unexplained violence was one of the latest instances of persecution of the church in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. After church pastor Wang Yi and his wife, Jiang Rong, were incarcerated in the Dec. 9 raid, authorities on Feb. 24 detained 44 Early Rain members meeting for worship in several…

LGBT lessons suspended after complaints from Christian and Muslim parents

Parkfield Community School said its No Outsiders project – which teaches tolerance of diverse groups, including those of different races, genders and sexual orientation – will not be taught “until a resolution has been reached”.

The Birmingham school had previously said lessons would continue as normal after the Easter holidays – despite the protests – alongside its “welcoming” No Outsiders ethos.

On Tuesday, Ofsted published a report by inspectors which concluded that the lessons were age-appropriate, which headteacher David Williams called “great news” for the school.

Inspectors said “a very small, but vocal, minority of parents are not clear about the school’s vision, policies and practice”, and that teachers should work on “further engagement” with mothers and fathers.

Talks between parents, education chiefs and the academy trust which runs Parkfield took place later that day, leading to the announcement that the lessons would be suspended.

The school said: “Nothing is more important than ensuring our children’s education continues uninterrupted.

“Both parents and the trust held constructive discussions with the Regional Schools Commissioner, and, as a result of these discussions, we are eager to continue to work together with parents over the coming days and weeks to find a solution that will support the children in our school to continue their education in a…

Southern Baptist Executive, Experts Say Churches Should Address Abuse of Adults

Southern Baptist Executive, Experts Say Churches Should Address Abuse of Adults

(RNS) — A Southern Baptist publishing executive recently revealed that she was a victim of alleged abuse for more than a decade from another Baptist leader.

In an online statement posted Friday (March 8), Jennifer Lyell, director of the books ministry at LifeWay Christian Resources, alleged that she was the victim of a now-resigned professor at the flagship seminary of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

The alleged sexual misconduct and abuse of power started during a mission trip when Lyell was a seminary student and continued for years. She said that she feared coming forward out of concern that revealing what happened would cause “collateral damage.”

“That collateral damage was the reason that the abuse had continued for so long,” she wrote. “The reason that a professor was able to continue grooming and taking advantage of his student was because I became like part of his family.”

After coming forward last year to her boss and the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., she said, both took swift action to address her allegations and to provide care for her. Her alleged abuser resigned from the seminary as well as from a nonprofit ministry he had founded and from a trustee role with the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board.

Lyell said she experienced “the best of what…

Growing Percentage of U.S. Catholics Rethinking Their Commitment after Abuse Scandal

Growing Percentage of U.S. Catholics Rethinking Their Commitment after Abuse Scandal

More Catholics are questioning their membership and participation in the church after heavily publicized sexual abuse scandals. Thirty-seven percent of Catholics in the United States say they have been questioning whether or not they would stay in the church after details of the abuse and cover-up became public.

Gallup interviewed 581 U.S. Catholics from January 21-27 and February 12-28. This was the first time they had asked U.S. Catholics about their commitment to the church since The Boston Globe’s reports of abuse in the Boston area and the lengths leaders at all levels went to so they could keep the abuse quiet.

In 2002, twenty-two percent of U.S. Catholics said yes to the question, “As a result of the recent news about sexual abuse of young people by priests, have you, personally, questioned whether you would remain in the Catholic church, or not?” That number rose by fifteen percent in 2019. In 2002, seventy-six percent of U.S. Catholics said they had not considered leaving, while it dropped to sixty-two percent in 2019.

In reporting their findings, Gallup said it was “unclear whether Catholics who are questioning their church membership will actually decide to leave the church. Many Catholics may consider leaving the church but ultimately decide not to do so, or they may have no intention of leaving but simply be responding to this…

Churches can sometimes make unwise decisions when it comes to building facilities. Today we cover seven of them and how to avoid them.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • If your church is running short on worship space, consider adding another service before adding millions of dollars of debt.
  • Churches should plan on maintenance because deferred maintenance will alway cost you more and your facilities will suffer.
  • A church gym is not a silver bullet to reach young families.
  • One of the biggest hidden deterrents to church growth is inadequate parking.

The seven facility mistakes we discuss are:

  1. If we build it, they will come
  2. Too big worship centers
  3. Lack of master planning
  4. Not planning on maintenance
  5. Gyms will be our youth group
  6. Too small gathering place
  7. Inadequate parking

A massacre in New Zealand, fighting in Israel, and a redemptive lesson from an unlikely source

Forty-nine people were killed in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, this morning. Twenty more were seriously wounded.

Four people, including three men and one woman, have been taken into custody. One man in his late twenties has been charged with murder. He reportedly posted a white-nationalist manifesto on Twitter.

This tragedy was the largest massacre in New Zealand history. It reminds us that Satan “comes to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). God is weeping with those who weep today and calls us to join him (Romans 12:15).

In other news, Israeli warplanes struck some one hundred Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip overnight, responding to a rocket attack on the Israeli metropolis of Tel Aviv. The fighting broke out as Egyptian mediators were in Gaza working to broker an expanded cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

In a world filled with violence and chaos, we can learn a redemptive lesson from an unlikely source.

“The Ides of March are come”

Today is known as the “Ides of March.” In the Roman world, the “Ides” was the midpoint of their months. The date we know as March 15 was marked by several religious ceremonies and was a Roman deadline for settling debts.

This day is especially known to history as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. The back story is remarkable.

According to the Roman biographer Plutarch (died AD 119), “A certain seer warned Caesar to be on his guard against a great peril on the day of the month of March which the Romans call the Ides; and when the day had come and Caesar was on his way to the senate-house, he greeted the seer with a jest and said: ‘Well, the Ides of March are come,’ and the seer said to him softly: ‘Ay, they are come, but they are not gone.’”

Later that day, Caesar was stabbed to death by as many as sixty conspirators led by Brutus and Cassius.

Most people know the story of his death. But why was Caesar…
