TREM Devotional 23 February 2019 – You Are Blessed In Christ

Topic: You Are Blessed In Christ [TREM Devotional 23 February 2019]

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” Ephesians 1:3 KJV

In Christ, you are blessed. The word “blessing” as used in this context is worth much more than money. Sound health is a blessing. Promotion is a blessing. Your relationship with God is a blessing. Enlargement, opportunities, good family and relationship are blessings. God blessing you with a car or a house is a blessing. Your child doing well in school is a blessing.

In Christ, blessings are your heritage. Your heritage in Christ is a blessed heritage. That is the reason for the finished work of Christ. In Christ, you have a background that is blessed. You are not cursed. No curse is permitted in your life. Anything in your life that negates God’s plan and agenda concerning your destiny is a curse. It is not supposed to be there and we must not tolerate it. In Christ, we are kings and priests. We have a double authority. Our priesthood is superior to the Aaronic and Levitical priesthood. 1 Peter 2:9 says: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 KJV)

Child of God, you are not every person. The fact that it is not working for others does not mean that it will not work for you. In Christ, you are already a blessed person. That is what makes you special. You carry an irrevocable blessing. It must work for you. If it requires God to command creation to stop in order for you to receive your answer, He will do it. Never ever consider impossibility. In fact, remove ‘impossibility’ from your dictionary as a child of God. All things are possible to him that believes. You are a believer! You are a royal priesthood! Royalty is attached to your life! You are blessed!

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 39:1-8

MEMORY VERSE: “The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.” – Proverbs 14:27

The MESSAGE:

Success should draw us nearer to God, but it has moved many people away from Him. When a person is successful but does not realise that his success originates from God, he is likely to misuse the success or fail to manage it well.

Secondly, if a successful person does not realise that the purpose of his God-given success is to serve God and serve other people, the person will not manage his success well. It is often said that when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. Many financially successful people are not using their wealth to glorify God. They don’t pay tithe or give offering and first fruits, neither do they help the poor, the widows and missionaries. Many of such people spend their money on frivolities, concubines and frequenting ungodly places. Managing success well requires God’s wisdom and direction.

Our Fire Scripture today is an account of king Hezekiah’s failure to manage his success well. Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon had sent some envoys to him with a letter and a gift because the Babylonians heard that Hezekiah has just miraculously recovered from a terrible sickness. Rather than inquire from the Lord on how to deal with the heathens that came to visit him, Hezekiah threw caution to the wind. Isaiah 39:2 says, “And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.” Then the Lord sent Prophet Isaiah to king Hezekiah to tell the king of the consequences of his foolish act. Isaiah said, “Hear the word of the LORD of hosts: Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD. And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” King Hezekiah did not manage his success well. As a result he left a big problem and huge deficit for his children and grand-children.

When we pray, we look for God but when we worship, God looks for us.

SCRIPTURE: One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” Acts 13:2-3 (NLT)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: When we pray, we look for God but when we worship, God looks for us.

It is evident from the anchor Scripture that the Holy Spirit spoke to the apostles while they were worshipping God. Worship, therefore, provokes the Voice of God. The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of God’s voice.

What then is the significance of the atmosphere of praise and worship?

a) The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of God’s presence (Acts 13:1-3 NLT).

b) The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of joy and merriment (Acts 2:47).

c) The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of deliverance (Acts 16:25-29)

d) The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of glory (2 Chronicles 7:1-3)

e) The atmosphere of praise and worship is the atmosphere of heaven on earth (Psalm 22:3).

The atmosphere of worship is the atmosphere of God’s presence. God is at home where praise is available. The atmosphere of celebration is the habitation of Jehovah. When we pray, we look for God but when we worship, God looks for us.

Now, where God is present, two things happen:

1) God’s presence transmits healing power (Acts 10:38).

2) The presence of God is destructive of the works of the enemy (Psalm 114:1-8).

Beloved, make up your mind to be habitually soaked in the deep worship of God. When you do this, the Presence of God would arrest every activity of the enemy around your life.

Remember this: When we pray, we look for God but when we worship, God looks for us.

Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 (KJV)

Key Verse: “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular“ (1 Corinthians 12:27).

MESSAGE:

Discrimination is a natural tendency among the morally depraved. Sometimes, the church unwittingly allows such vice to creep into it unnoticed.

This was the tendency Apostle Paul rebuked in the Corinthian church. He decried the attitude of some members of the body who assume a superior posture in their dealings with others.

He could not see any reason for pride as he noted that “those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness” (verse 23). Every Christian is, as it were, a subset of the whole set. There is need for all the subsets to function in harmonious relationship, to avoid working at cross-purposes with one another and in violation of the demands of Christ. The gifts of God in us are not for vain glory. They are to complement other gifts in other believers to edify the Church. Our virtues and personal characteristics must be tailored to make the body strong and functional for our prime mandate of evangelism.

God has put us in the Body of Christ as He wishes. None needs to feel inferior or superior to the other. It is unacceptable for believers to discriminate against one another. As products of unmerited grace, our disposition to each other must be one of humility, love, compassion and voluntary acceptance of each other’s worth before the Lord. We must not allow colour, gender, class or status to obscure our vision of other saints.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is unscriptural to discriminate in the church.

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. – Romans 13:12

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Romans 13:8-14

Ernest Hemingway was asked if he could write a compelling story in six words. His response: “For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.” Hemingway’s story is powerful because it inspires us to fill in the details. Were the shoes simply not needed by a healthy child? Or was there a tragic loss—something requiring God’s deep love and comfort?

The best stories pique our imagination, so it’s no surprise that the greatest story ever told stokes the fires of our creativity. God’s story has a central plot: He created all things; we (the human race) fell into sin; Jesus came to Earth and died and rose again to save us from our sins; and we now await His return and the restoration of all things.

Knowing what has come before and what lies ahead, how should we now live? If Jesus is restoring His entire creation from the clutches of evil, we must “put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12). This includes turning from sin by God’s power and choosing to love Him and others well (vv. 8–10).

The specific ways we fight with Jesus against evil will depend on what gifts we have and what needs we see. Let’s use our imagination and look around us. Let’s seek out the wounded and weeping, and extend God’s justice, love, and comfort as He guides us.

Matthew 5:12, “Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great [is] your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

Text: Matthew 5:10-12

Jesus is saying that persecution should actually cause us to rejoice. There are many positive things about persecution but one of the best reasons to rejoice is because of the reward awaiting us in heaven.

Jesus takes the persecution of His saints very seriously as can be seen during the Damascus road experience of the apostle Paul. The Lord asked Paul (then Saul), “Why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4) He didn’t say, “Why are you persecuting my people?” but “Why are you persecuting me?”

It is not actually us that people are rejecting but they are rejecting the One we represent. Therefore, Jesus promised to share His reward with us. All the glory and honor that Jesus has and will receive will be shared with those who have suffered shame for His name’s sake (Rom. 8:17). What a great reward!

Focusing on the reward instead of the persecution can actually make us rejoice when people speak against us (Acts 5:41). Paul actually longed to experience the fellowship that Jesus provided to those who suffered for His sake (Phil. 3:10). God’s reward is infinitely greater than any suffering we will ever encounter.

Jesus had a humble heart. If He abides in us, pride will never dominate our lives. Jesus had a loving heart. If He dwells within us, hatred and bitterness will never rule us. Jesus had a forgiving and understanding heart. If He lives within us, mercy will temper our relationships with our fellowmen. Jesus had an unselfish heart. If He lives in us, selfishness will not predominate, but service to God and others will come before our selfish interests. You say, “That’s a big order!” I admit that. It would be impossible if you had to measure up to Him in your own strength and with your natural heart. Paul recognized that he could never attain this heart purity by his own striving.

Prayer for the day: So live in me today that I will be able to radiate Your love and grace, Jesus.

Why is this fashion model making headlines?

Madeline Stuart is an Australian fashion model. As the Washington Post reports, she is in “high demand” today. Madeline’s career started when her mother arranged a professional photo shoot for her and put some of the pictures on Facebook. They went viral overnight, racking up more than seven million views.

The offers started pouring in. She was invited to model in New York, Paris, China, London, Sweden, and Dubai. She has now walked more than one hundred high-fashion catwalks. She has more than one million followers on social media and her own clothing line.

Madeline also has Down syndrome.

“I’m happy to change the way the world looks at people with disabilities,” Madeline says. “I want the world to be more accepting. That is my dream.”

Wheelchair Barbie and Bernie Sanders

In other news, Wheelchair Barbie is coming to stores. In June, Mattel will debut a doll that comes with a prosthetic leg and another that comes with a wheelchair.

More than one billion people in the world have a disability, according to Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, president of a group that advocates for the disabled. “We want to see ourselves reflected in the culture, toys, products and everything around us,” she says.

Mizrahi adds: “Barbie joins a number of powerful companies who also understand that marketing, and including, people with disabilities is both the right thing to do and the profitable thing to do.”

One more news item: Sen. Bernie Sanders announced yesterday that he will run for president again. CNN calls him “one of the frontrunners” and “one of the most popular politicians among Democratic voters.”

At seventy-seven years of age, Sanders is the oldest candidate in the field. He’s a year older than presumptive candidate Joe Biden and five years older than President Trump. If any of them is elected in 2020, they will become the oldest president in history.

Michael Gerson was President George W. Bush’s chief speechwriter and senior policy advisor and is now a nationally syndicated columnist with the Washington Post. It was my privilege to meet him and to work together at a recent Dallas Baptist University event.

He has been named one of the “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” and is one of the most popular and respected conservative voices in American culture.

He also suffers from clinical depression.

Gerson preached last Sunday at Washington National Cathedral. His sermon was adapted into a Washington Post article titled “I was hospitalized for depression. Faith helped me remember how to live.” It is one of the most moving and illuminating articles I have ever read.

If you have time, I encourage you to stop and read it before continuing with this Daily Article. If you do not, I hope you’ll read it as soon as you can.

“Despair can grow inside you like a tumor.”

Gerson describes his disease: “The brain experiences a chemical imbalance and wraps a narrative around it. So the lack of serotonin, in the mind’s alchemy, becomes something like, ‘Everybody hates me.’ Over time, despair can grow inside you like a tumor.”

There are times when the body is incapable of healing without medical intervention. God calls medical professionals just as he calls pastors and missionaries. Faith is a key part of the solution, but depression and other clinical conditions require clinical responses as well.

That’s why Gerson offers this crucial advice: “I’d urge anyone with undiagnosed depression to seek out professional help. There is no way to will yourself out of this disease, any more than to will yourself out of tuberculosis.”

However, as he adds, “Those who hold to the wild hope of a living God” find help and grace in him.
