This week, celebrities, athletes and faith leaders alike painted bold red X’s on their hands as they took part in the END IT Movement, a global campaign to raise awareness about the scourge of modern-day slavery.
To that end, hundreds of thousands of these ‘Freedom Fighters’ took part in Thursday’s seventh annual Shine A Light On Slavery Day.
“The END IT Movement has built a global network of Freedom Fighters from all walks of life who are inspiring people to raise their voices and advocate for action in the fight against slavery,” END IT Movement Campaign Director Jenni Brown explained in a press release.
“With the momentum we’ve garnered year after year, we continue to see awareness of these inhumane crimes grow,” she said. “This awareness leads to action where we continue to witness laws changing, bills being passed, and more resources becoming available to not only shine a light on slavery, but also put an end to it.”
Currently, roughly 40.31 million men, women and children worldwide have fallen prey to the slave trade, which takes various forms including bonded labor, forced labor and sex trafficking.
Gary Haugen, International Justice Mission CEO, addressed the matter during Thursday morning’s National Prayer Breakfast.
“Modern slavery is as vast and as brutal as it has ever been, but one thing is new: we now know how to stop it for good,” said Haugen, who Fox News reports was wearing a red X pin.

Key Verse: “The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?” (John 9:8).
MESSAGE:
One of the great attributes of the Holy Bible that have continued to confound literary experts over the ages is its dramatic style of presenting events in both figurative and literal dimensions. A short passage may tell a story; but look deep into the narrative and you will find a bigger picture of what God is revealing. That is the case with the five-verse text before us in today’s reading for meditation.
Before the blind man met our Lord, he lived in shame, isolation and penury, depending on charity. Deprived of sight, he also required a guide to lead him around. He was helpless and at the mercy of friends and relatives. He would not know the extent to which he could trust them for a correct account of what passerby dropped into his hands, since he could not see. He dared not dispute their claims of the earnings of the day for fear they might abandon him in retaliation.
That is also the picture of mankind until God sent His dear Son to come and open our eyes and break sin’s hold on us. Sin’s grip puts us in fetters that did not allow us to enjoy God’s riches. We were blind and could not see the marvels of nature God had put in place for His creatures. But Jesus came to our rescue.
This short verse, in a figurative way, is the story of salvation. When the sinner meets Jesus, He opens his eyes and transforms him. We were like the blind man before Jesus changed us into what we are now. The sinner will remain rooted to the same spot of torment at the hands of the devil if he does not reach out to Jesus for help. It’s not God’s desire for His creatures to be so oppressed after He has made a way of redemption. Reach out to Him in faith today and be vastly transformed, becoming a partaker of His divine nature.

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Psalm 119:9-16
A work assignment had taken my coworker and me on a 250-mile journey, and it was late when we began our trip home. An aging body with aging eyes makes me a bit uneasy about nighttime driving; nevertheless, I opted to drive first. My hands gripped the steering wheel and my eyes gazed intently at dimly lit roads. While driving I found I could see better when lights from vehicles behind me beamed on the highway ahead. I was much relieved when my friend eventually took the wheel of his vehicle. That’s when he discovered I had been driving with fog lights and not the headlights!
Psalm 119 is the masterful composition of one who understood that God’s Word provides us with light for everyday living (v. 105). Yet, how often do we find ourselves in situations similar to my uncomfortable night on the highway? We needlessly strain to see, and we sometimes stray from the best paths because we forget to use the light of God’s Word. Psalm 119 encourages us to be intentional about “hitting the light switch.” What happens when we do? We find wisdom for purity (vv. 9–11); we discover fresh motivation and encouragement for avoiding detours (vv. 101–102). And when we live with the lights on, the psalmist’s praise is likely to become our praise: “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (v. 97).

Hundreds of strangers turned up in freezing conditions for the funeral of a hero Holocaust survivor after a rabbi’s plea on Facebook.
Zale Newman had visited 85-year-old Eddie Ford over the last seven months at a hospital in Toronto where he was suffering from cancer.
Ford said he wanted a Jewish funeral at the end of his life so Zale asked for those living near Toronto to ‘escort a Hero of the Holocaust for his final journey’ in a ‘huge PURE act of kindness’.
Despite posting his request online just the night before the service and temperatures of 13F, hundreds of people made the journey to pay their respects.
Among the mourners was Eddie’s long-lost brother, whose relative learned of the sad news on the Internet and informed him so he could attend.
Zale followed up on his post saying when he saw a line of cars the next day he ‘assumed there was another funeral taking place at the same time’.
He said the random of kindness from dozens of strangers left him in tears.
Zale wrote: ‘ I sent out a late night FB post and two emails to groups neither of whom replied. 3 people responded that they would join me. I was hoping for at least ten in total. When I arrived at the cemetery in a wind chill of -27, far to the north of Toronto, I couldn’t get in because of the line of cars.
‘I assumed there was another funeral taking place at the same time and I wondered how we would find Eddie’s resting place. I stopped people who were walking and they all said they were going to the funeral of Mr Ford.

Open Heaven 10 February 2019 Sunday MESSAGE:
Greatness is the quality of being distinguished, eminent or influential. Virtually all human beings have an inherent desire to be great, but only few end up attaining greatness. Great men and women often combine their top leadership position with special abilities, vast wealth, authority and influence. Although most people believe that greatness is attained through personal effort, superior knowledge, special wisdom or hard work, the Bible speaks to the contrary in Daniel 14:17b saying:
“…to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.”
Moreover, children of God must learn that appointing someone into a position of authority by manipulation or without God’s approval does not confer greatness upon such a fellow. Hosea 8:4 says such an elevation will be a short lived exercise in futility. In reality therefore, no one can achieve true greatness by personal effort, manipulation or human connections. True greatness can only come by God’s appointment and empowerment, and the pathway to it goes through the fear of God. Anyone who desires to be great therefore, must have deep reverence for God. The bible testifies to the fear of God being present in all the fathers of faith before God bestowed greatness upon them. Abraham received an irreversible promise of greatness after God acknowledged his fear of Him (Genesis 22:12). Joseph’s dream of greatness was fulfilled because he feared God (Genesis 42:18, Genesis 39:90. The Lord blessed the later end of Job more than his beginning because he feared Him (Job 2:3). God singled out Cornelius for greatness because he had the testimony of fearing Him (Acts 10:2). Also, the fear of God helped Daniel to attain greatness in spite of his captivity in a strange land.
Furthermore, Ecclesiastes 8:12 tells us as a matter of certainty that it shall be well with those who fear God and revere Him. The fear of God automatically confers God’s blessings on His children and causes the Sun of righteousness shall arise on their behalf, ushering them into supernatural dimensions of healing and accelerated growth (Malachi 4:2). I pray that as you begin to walk in the fear of God, your journey to greatness will be accelerated in Jesus’ Name.

The 25-year-old man (given the protective alias Adane) was reported to the human rights office in the overwhelmingly Muslim-majority eastern region of Somali.
He was encouraged to return to Islam but was arrested when he refused, despite citing his constitutional right to freedom of religion.
Intervention by the chairman of the human rights office led to his release.
On his release, Adane, who became a Christian two years ago, discovered he had been dismissed from paramilitary Liyou police force.
According to a local source who spoke with World Watch Monitor, he was then urged by the chairman to relocate because he had upset too many people.
World Watch Monitor, which highlights incidences of persecution, said: “Christians in the Muslim-majority eastern Somali region can experience hostility from family and community because of their faith, and also can be vulnerable when ethno-political tension erupts.”
Churches will survey the congregation and ask about an ideal age for a new lead pastor. The answers are always the same—somewhere between 38 years-old and 56 years-old. The national median age is 38 years-old, and the median age of a churchgoer in most denominations is someone in their mid-to-late 50s, so it’s no surprise the church would say, “I want a pastor who is like me!” For those who are older on your church staff, what can be done? How can a church move away from the blatant ageism that seems to be so rampant in congregations?
Millennials have been blamed for killing everything in our culture from the hotel industry to canned tuna. Is evangelism next on their hit list? Probably not. In a recent study from Barna, almost half of practicing millennial Christians (47 percent) say it is “wrong to share one’s personal beliefs with someone of a different faith in hopes that they will one day share the same faith.” This caused many loud laments on social media from Christian leaders about the faith of millennials and some pessimistic declarations about the future of Christianity in America. However, the rest of Barna’s findings along with other research presents a more nuanced picture of millennials’ relationship with evangelism.
John Allen Chau had hoped to convert members of the Sentinelese people when he illegally travelled to North Sentinel Island – a remote Bay of Bengal island under the jurisdiction of India.
Samuel Brownback was quoted by the Indo Asian News Service as saying: “The US government has not asked or pursued any sort of sanctions that the Indian government would take against the tribal people in this case.
“It’s a tragic situation and a tragic case of what’s happened, but that’s not something that’s been asked.”
In a letter to his parents prior to his death, Chau said: “You guys might think I’m crazy in all this, but I think it’s worth it to declare Jesus to these people.
“Please do not be angry at them or at God if I get killed. Rather, please live your lives in obedience to whatever He has called you to and I’ll see you again when you pass through the veil.”

…Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth (Romans 14:22).
Some people like it when a message of condemnation and judgement is preached. They prefer to hear more about sin and its judgement. But fear of judgement has never produced righteousness or the love of God. Gospel means good news, and that’s what Jesus sent us to preach and teach. He said, “…Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
It’s not enough that you’re preaching a message about Jesus Christ; the message must be about His liquid love, the remission of sin that He made possible, and His gift of righteousness to everyone who believes. Don’t preach judgment or condemnation; preach His love and righteousness.
Some don’t like it when we preach righteousness and the love of Christ to sinners. What they don’t realize is that righteousness is actually a gift to the sinner, and not essentially to the Christian, because the Christian is born righteous. The sinner, upon hearing and believing the message of the Gospel, receives eternal life, which comes bundled with the gift of righteousness.
When we preach righteousness, people embrace righteousness, and once they do, they start living right. That’s because righteousness is a nature; it’s the nature of God that’s imparted to the spirit of the one who’s born again, granting him the ability to live right. Right living is a product of righteousness. No one can live right, who isn’t first made righteous; and only God gives righteousness; it’s not something you obtain by your own good works.
This is why we preach the Gospel, for only through the Gospel is the righteousness of God unveiled. Paul said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ…For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith…” (Romans 1:16-17). Did you notice that?
So, if we don’t preach the true Gospel, people will never understand righteousness, and that would defeat the purpose for which Christ came to the world. He came to make men sons of God; He came to make sinners righteous. He came to make us one with the Father, and have His life and nature of righteousness. Hallelujah!
CONFESSION Loving Father, thank you for your liquid love so lavishly poured out on all; the remission of sin made possible by the vicarious sacrifice of Jesus, and the resultant gift of righteousness to everyone who believes. Today, your righteousness is unveiled and embraced as many hear and receive the Gospel all around the world. Many are saved, healed, and delivered, and darkness is dispelled, to the glory and praise of your Name. Hallelujah!
