Fast Facts: In April of 1884, First Baptist Church of Carmi, Illinois, was formed. Over the years, many mission opportunities and programs have been started by FBC Carmi. For example, the Illinois Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services was started in 1918 and the pastor and deacons of FBC Carmi led the way to raise the funds. Numerous mission trips to Mexico and other outreach/mission opportunities over the years have led to the church becoming a church focused on missions and outreach. In 2019, FBC Carmi will be seeking to ‘love their city for the glory of God’ as it seeks to be more involved in the town of Carmi so that they may share the love of Christ with those in the town. As a congregation, they are praying for an increase in salvations and baptisms in 2019. Please pray that the congregation will have more opportunities to share the gospel with those in Carmi. Also pray for three special programs designed in 2019 to minister to their community: Easter Sunday services, Vacation Bible School and Christmas Eve services.

While Francis is building on two of his priorities with his Sunday-Tuesday visit to the United Arab Emirates – promoting interfaith dialogue and visiting the Catholic peripheries – diplomatic protocol is likely to dictate that he leaves other concerns behind.

The Emirates’ support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, which has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, and the UAE’s problematic record on human rights and labour violations at home are likely to get a pass – at least in public.

 

Francis is travelling to Abu Dhabi to participate in a conference on inter-religious dialogue sponsored by the Emirates-based Muslim Council of Elders, an initiative that seeks to counter religious fanaticism by promoting a moderate brand of Islam.

It is the brainchild of Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, the grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the revered 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Islam learning that trains clerics and scholars from around the world.

It will be the fifth meeting between Francis and Sheikh el-Tayeb, evidence that Al-Azhar’s freeze in relations with the Holy See sparked by Pope Benedict XVI’s 2006 comments linking Islam to violence has thoroughly thawed.

Father blames ‘extreme Christianity’ for missionary son’s death

Dr Patrick Chau has been speaking to the Guardian, months after John Allen Chau died near North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean.

 

Explaining that his son’s missionary work had been a contentious issue before he died, he said: “John is gone because the Western ideology overpowered my [Confucian] influence.”

“If you have [anything] positive to say about religion, l wish not to see or hear it.”

He went on to speak about his difficulty with the Great Commission where Jesus instructed followers to spread the Good News to all nations.

John Chau wrote to his parents before his death: “You guys might think I’m crazy in all this, but I think it’s worth it to declare Jesus to these people.

“Please do not be angry at them or at God if I get killed. Rather, please live your lives in obedience to whatever he has called you to and I’ll see you again when you pass through the veil.”

Chau’s death has courted debate across the world with suggestions mission organisations should think twice before sending evangelists into dangerous areas.

My times are in Your hands… — Psalm 31:15

We wonder, What am I to do with my life? What is my purpose here? Does God have a calling on my life?

God answers these questions through our natural gifts and abilities. He leads us to our purpose through the natural skills and unique talents He bestows upon us. God-given gifts are the skills a person easily performs without formal training. We derive great pleasure from doing what we are naturally good at doing.

If you aren’t sure of your purpose, just do what you are good at doing, and then watch God confirm you by blessing your endeavors. Don’t spend your life trying to do what you are not gifted to do. I tried to grow a garden and can tomatoes and sew my husband’s clothes. I wasn’t at all good at any of these things, and I even despised trying!

It was obvious that God wasn’t calling me to grow and preserve vegetables or to sew. But what if no one enjoyed gardening or canning or making clothes? God keeps our world in balance by giving each of us natural talent and pleasure in doing what needs to be done for the good of everyone around us.

We know we are operating in our gifts and calling when what we do ministers life to others. If what we do makes us miserable and fills us with a sense of dread, it’s possible we are not in God’s perfect will. God gives us peace and joy to let us know we are fulfilling His perfect plan.

I encourage you to look at what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and what God is giving you the grace to do—and then let God be God in your life. He wants to flow through you in many different ways, but it may not be the same way He flows through others. Trust His ability in and through you, and don’t be afraid to be unique.

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for the special gifts and abilities You have given me. Help me to stay focused on what You have called me to do and use my gifts to bless the word around me. Help me to be myself—the unique person You created me to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Topic: In Christ, You Are Holy [TREM Devotional 3 February 2019]

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:” Ephesians 1:4 KJV

Beloved, God chose you. And when you are presented, anytime before God, the way you are seen in the presence of God is holy. In Christ, every believer is holy in the sight of God. Sometimes I wonder why people are afraid of that word. You see, it is a lack of understanding that makes people to be frightened whenever they hear that word ‘holy’. They are full of fear! Am I sure God is going to accept me? But the truth is that you are already accepted in the beloved.

‘Holy’ means separated unto God. ‘Holy’ means separated for a service or separated for use. Just like you are holy, chairs can also be holy, set aside for sacred use. So let it not frighten you. Some people try to frighten God’s people with the word ‘holy’. But do you know that the Holiness of God does not draw people to God? “According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blame before him in love” Paul called the church in Corinth holy. And some of these folks were taking people’s wives, and that does not mean you should take people’s wives simply because you are holy in Christ.

As a matter of fact, if a child of God goes about living a life of sin, I would doubt whether he is even saved. You can’t be saved and still be living a lifestyle of sin. No, that is not grace! It is sin! If you are in the company of those who say ‘now I have the license to sin because of Grace,’ then you don’t know Grace. You need to repent.

If you are truly saved, how can you enjoy sin? You can’t! You can’t be comfortable in sin. Hitherto, you were comfortable, but now you have the life of God in you. The life of God and sin cannot go together. They cannot cohabit. It is not possible!

Many of the evil in our society today emanated from unjust thinking. Thinking justly will save you from engaging in fraudulent activities and have quarrels with people.

“But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” Matthew 5:44

To be just is to be morally right and fair. The truth is that we live in a world filled with many unjust people. Many are always looking for a way to cheat and bully others, but this is wrong for us Christians. Jesus implores us to be just and fair at all times, even when we are being cheated. It is important that you maintain a clear conscience every time. Someone may try to take everything from you, never let them take away your clear conscience.

Never try to cheat anyone, and if you are cheated, don’t revenge.

It’s Not A Sin!

2.Thank You, Father, for the provision You made for the redemption of my soul and that of the whole world, through the blood of Jesus that was shed at Calvary.

3.Father, in any way I have fallen short of your glory, please, have mercy and forgive me, in Jesus’ name.

5.Father, let Your fire consume everything in me that is resisting Your transformation agenda in my life, in Jesus’ name.

Topic: A Supplanting Of The Old By The New

…ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him – (Colossians 3:9-10).

In Christ, you have much more than mere religion. You received the life and nature of God when you received Christ into your heart. You were literally born anew; you were born of God. John 1:12-13 declares, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

You’re a new creature in Christ Jesus. You have the resurrection life, because you were raised together with Christ to a new life altogether. Ephesians 2:4-6 says, “But God…hath quickened us together with Christ…And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” When Jesus died, you died with Him. When He was buried, you were buried with Him. When God raised Him from the dead, you were raised together with Him.

You received a new life when He was raised from the dead. When He was raised from the dead, He was born again (Acts 13:33). He came up with a new life, the resurrection life. So, when the Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17), it means there’s been a supplanting of the old life by the resurrection life. You’re not the old man and former nature that sinned. That former self is dead; he died in Christ. Your new nature is identified with Christ: “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Your past with all the failures, weaknesses, and defeat were buried with Him. Now, you have a new life in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!

PRAYER
Righteous Father, I thank you for the reality of the new life of righteousness, which I’ve received in Christ. The old nature with its decadence, weakness, and defeat has been completely supplanted by the new life of righteousness, victories, triumphs, and strength. I walk in the reality of this transcendent life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Bible In One Year: Exodus 31-33; Matthew 22:1-22

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 1:1-14

MEMORY VERSE: “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” – John 1:3

The MESSAGE:

Jesus is the word of God that has the power to kill and to make alive. The word of God in your mouth is so powerful that satan fears and trembles at it. The devil prefers to see you close your mouth because Revelation 12:11 says, “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; …” The devil fears the word as much as he fears the blood of Jesus. In every battle of life, the word of God in your mouth is acidic to the devil and it is like a number of dangerous bullets to his kingdom. Beloved, always remember that you were created in the image of God according to Genesis 1:26a, 27. We carry the Word and Spirit of God. We must imitate God and speak like Him. If God created the whole world by speaking, then, you too must create your world (your expectations) by speaking the Word of God. Stop thinking it, speak it forth. The Word of God is a Creator, the Word of God is the answer to all things the world over. Child of God, open your mouth and begin to speak greatness into every situation in your life. Are you discouraged? Just speak to that situation. Are you depressed, speak the Word of life to the circumstance. Have you been in that battle for long without help in sight? Speak the Word. Are you in despair, just speak the Word and you will be amazed at what the Word can do in your life.

Jesus, the Word of God, revealed Himself in Daniel 4:17 as the most high that ruleth in the kingdom of men and gives it to whoever He will. Yes, He rules in your affairs. He is right in that situation, just speak out and speak forth. The Word of God is a deliverer. Remember how long the children of Israel were in bondage in Egypt, at last, the Word of God, the Most High, remembered them. Beloved, the Word is within reach, do not allow Pharaoh to see your head bowed; do not allow the Egyptians (your enemies) to see you depressed; do not allow the Heavenly cloud of witness (the angels and saints in heaven) to behold you doubting the One they call Holy, Faithful and True (Exodus 2:11-25). Know that the Most High is the Word of God. He remembers His covenant, He will remember you. No matter how long that challenge has lasted.

Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear. – Jeremiah 5:21

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Jeremiah 5:18-23

Actress Diane Kruger was offered a role that would make her a household name. But it required her to play a young wife and mother experiencing the loss of her husband and child, and she had never personally suffered loss to such a degree. She didn’t know if she could be believable. But she accepted, and in order to prepare, she began attending support meetings for people walking through the valley of extreme grief.

Initially she offered suggestions and thoughts when those in the group shared their stories. She, like most of us, wanted to be helpful. But gradually she stopped talking, and simply started listening. It was only then she began truly learning to walk a mile in their shoes. And her realization came by using her ears.

Jeremiah’s indictment against the people was that they refused to use their “ears” to hear the Lord’s voice. The prophet did not mince words, calling them “foolish and senseless people” (Jeremiah 5:21). God is constantly at work in our lives communicating words of love, instruction, encouragement, and caution. The Father’s desire is that you and I learn and mature, and we have each been given the tools, such as ears, to do so. The question then is, will we use them to hear the heart of our Father?

Today’s Reflection
Father, I believe You are always speaking. Forgive my stubborn tendency to think I have all the answers. Open my ears that I may hear.
