Student decodes baptist theologian’s writings after centuries of mystery

Undergraduate Jonny Woods at the University of St Andrews was given the task by senior lecturer in Systematic Theology, Dr Stephen Holmes, of trying to crack a series of sermon notes using one document which existed in both shorthand and longhand.

The theoligian Andrew Fuller lived in the late 18th and early 19th century and became a leader of the British Baptist denomination.

Despite minimal schooling, Fuller published the hugely influential text, The Gospel Worthy of All Acceptation, which changed the history of the Baptists.

The work brought the baptists into the evangelival revival and Fuller also founded the Baptist Mission Society alongside William Carey, with Fuller staying in the UK encouraging people to financially and prayerfully support mission abroad.

Dr Stephen Holmes from St Andrews told Premier Christian Radio about the time he first thought the theological musings could be read: “These pages of shorthand sermon notes were in an archive at Bristol Baptist College – they kindly allowed me to come and look at them…everybody had said ‘you can’t read them, nobody knows how to read the shorthand, it’s impenetrable’ but I thought I ought to go and look”.

Dr Holmes took a day to sit with the books and initially agreed that they were too difficult but noticed that the titles were written normally. He then found a ‘Confession of Faith’ from 1782, of which…

OB/GYN Blasts N.Y. Law: ‘Absolutely No’ Medical Reason for 3rd-Trimester Abortion

OB/GYN Blasts N.Y. Law: ‘Absolutely No’ Medical Reason for 3rd-Trimester Abortion

A message from an obstetrician/gynecologist who has delivered more than 2,500 babies has gone viral after he proclaimed there is “absolutely no” medical reason to abort an unborn infant in the third trimester.

The Tweet from Dr. Omar L. Hamada, a Nashville-based OB/GYN and a former army surgeon, received 48,000 re-Tweets and nearly 100,000 likes after he posted it Jan. 23.

Hamada was reacting to a New York law that legalized abortion up to the moment of birth for conditions related to the life and health of the mother.

“I want to clear something up so that there is absolutely no doubt. I’m a Board Certified OB/GYN who has delivered over 2,500 babies,” he wrote. “There’s not a single fetal or maternal condition that requires third-trimester abortion. Not one. Delivery, yes. Abortion, no.”

The Tweet sparked nearly 3,000 comments — some from OB/GYNs who agreed with Hamada.

“I am also a Board Certified OBGYN who has been in practice for more than 23 years and I wholeheartedly agree with my colleague,…

UK’s first diploma in student ministry launched

It’s a joint initiative of Westminster Theological College (WTC) and the student mission organisation, Fusion, which is aimed at equipping student workers with practical skills and theological grounding for their work.

The diploma will be accredited by the University of Chester and will begin in September 2019.

According to the organisers, the course will help people meet others from student ministry and discuss how they can inspire students about mission and discipleship after university.

The course also aims to reflect the ‘unique challenges and opportunities’ of student ministry with its teaching and establish a community of student workers who want to commit to the role long-term.

The two year part-time course offers modules in Biblical studies, Church history, spirituality, and Christian beliefs.

There are then modules in student mission, church and student culture.

The course is said to be suitable for anyone who wants to go deeper in their faith but is particularly geared towards those who have previously studied at University level and not specialised in theology.

Lucy Peppiatt, Principal at WTC, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be able to launch this new initiative with Fusion and to be part of training and equipping the next generation of student ministers.

“I personally have a great conviction that the church should be investing in students and young…

Grieving Christians Baffled by Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Aggression in Nigeria

Grieving Christians Baffled by Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Aggression in Nigeria

JAGINDI, Nigeria, January 29, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Christians in a village in Kaduna state, in north-central Nigeria, don’t understand why Muslim Fulani herdsmen shot a 70-year-old Christians and wounded two others there last month.

They do know the herdsmen’s cattle destroyed several of their crops last year, that since the attack many Christians have fled, and that many of those who have stayed are afraid to go to church meetings.

Christians in Ginden Dutse village, near Jagindi in Jema’a County, reported the destruction of their crops by the Muslim Fulani’s cattle, but they have not retaliated in any way, they said.

“We cannot fight back, because we as Christians are law-abiding citizens of this country,” Abel Bako, 48, secretary of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Gindin Dutse, told Morning Star News. “However, it is the responsibility of the Nigerian government to protect us from terror activities of herdsmen.”

The herdsmen attacked at 11 p.m. on Dec. 4, according to the ECWA church’s pastor, the Rev. Williams Yakubu. John Karik of St. John’s Catholic Church was shot dead inside his house as he was sleeping, Pastor Yakubu said. Karik’s son, 43-year-old Anthony John, also a member of St. John’s, was shot and wounded in the same house.

A 16-year-old member of the ECWA church, Gideon Philip, was shot and wounded as…

Trump praises state schools’ efforts to teach Bible literacy classes

Reports indicate that bills have been introduced in at least six states to permit the classes in state schools.

Donald Trump tweeted on Monday: “Numerous states introducing Bible Literacy classes, giving students the option of studying the Bible.

“Starting to make a turn back? Great!”

His morning tweet followed North Dakota state Rep Aaron McWilliams – who is co-sponsoring a Bible literacy measure, being interviewed on a “Fox & Friends” segment.

Defending his bill, he insisted that the Bible course would be entirely optional for schools to offer and for students to take.

“The concept of forgiveness, the concept of recompense, these are things that all come from the Bible,” McWilliams said.

“If we don’t have a good foundational understanding of this, we’re not going to understand how the founding fathers of our country and other countries put it together to have the world that we have today.”

Fox News reported that the states where these bills are under consideration include Missouri, Indiana, West Virginia, Virginia and Florida.

Bible literacy bills were considered in at least three other states last year – Alabama, Iowa and West Virginia – but none passed, according to the…

Asia Bibi Is Officially Free: Pakistani Court Upholds Acquittal

Asia Bibi Is Officially Free: Pakistani Court Upholds Acquittal

Pakistani judges upheld their acquittal of Asia Bibi and she is now free to leave the country to join her family in Canada.

After being imprisoned and placed on death row for some eight years for purportedly insulting Islam, the Christian mother is finally a free woman.

As Christian Headlines previously reported Bibi was arrested in 2010 when several Muslim women sparked an argument with her for offering water to other Muslim women after she, a Christian, had already sipped from the cup. Bibi was arrested for insulting the prophet Muhammad under the Islamic country’s blasphemy laws. Bibi was held in prison until October 2018 when a panel of three-judges reversed her sentence for lack of evidence.

After Bibi was released riots broke out in the streets, many people calling for her to either be killed or for the court to reincarcerate her. Protesters also called for the execution of the judges who acquitted her. Muslim radicals filled an appeal after the conviction was overturned which forced Bibi to stay in Pakistan. The Christian mother was immediately placed under protective custody in a discrete location while the court reviewed the overturned conviction.

On Tuesday, nearly three months after being initially released, Bibi is finally free to leave Pakistan and join her daughters who are currently in Canada, CBN News reports.

Reportedly, one of the Justices presiding…

Christian MP sentenced to 3 months in prison

The former Labour whip was found guilty in December of perverting the course of justice by lying about a speeding.

Mr Justice Stuart-Smith jailed the MP for three months and sentenced her brother, Festus – who was also involved – to 10 months in prison.

The judge said: “It’s a tragedy that you have found yourselves here and in this predicament but it’s a tragedy that you have brought on yourselves.”

The 35-year-old solicitor was driving behind the wheel of a Nissan Micra on Monday 24th July 2017 – doing 41mph in a 30mph in Thorney in Cambridgeshire.

The Old Bailey heard evidence the MP was texting as well as speeding during the summer recess.

If she got 12 months or more she would have lost her parliamentary seat but she will now face a recall petition.

Once a Petition Officer has opened a recall petition, it will be open for signing for 6 weeks.

If at least 10% of the electorate in the constituency signs the petition, the MP will lose their seat and a by-election will be triggered.

The recalled MP can stand as a candidate at the by-election.

Your Dedication And Your Worship By Pastor Paul Enenche

TESTIMONIES AND THANKSGIVING SERVICE – DAY 21 – 27TH JANUARY 2019
ANCHOR SCRIPTURE(S): JOHN 4:23-24
MESSAGE TOPIC: YOUR DEDICATION AND YOUR WORSHIP
BY: DR. PAUL ENENCHE

SERVICE OBJECTIVE: Understanding the link between your dedication and your worship

Heartfelt worship is a mark of true dedication to God.

SCRIPTURAL EXAMPLES OF DEDICATION AND WORSHIP:

  1. Abraham (Gen. 22:5)
  2. Moses (Ex. 15:1; Deut. 31:22)
  3. David (2Sam. 23:1; Ps. 119:164)
  4. Solomon (1 Kings 3:3; 4:32)
  5. Paul the Apostle (Phil. 4:4)

If you are dedicated, you will be a worshipper and praiser.

WHAT WORSHIP SIGNIFIES:

  1. Worship is a mark of affection for God (Ps. 86:12; 42:1-2)
  2. Worship is proof of reverence (Ps. 89:1, 7)
  3. Worship is proof of submission (Ps. 95:6-7)

There is a connection between your spirituality and your hymnology/songology.

PRODUCTS OF WORSHIP:

  1. Your worship of God enhances your value in life (1Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22)
No system can devalue a worshipper
  2. Your worship of God provokes His focus on you (John 4:23)
Other people look for God but God looks for the worshipper
  3. Your worship of God attracts His Presence to you (Ps. 89:15)
Other people look for God but God looks for the worshipper
  4. Your worship of God releases His favour on you (Acts 2:47)
  5. Your worship of God releases His giftings in you (1Sam. 10:5-6)
You come to a point where the gifts and graces inside you begin to come out of you as you continue to be a deep worshipper
  6. Your worship of God facilitates His guidance of your life (Ps. 89:15; Ps. 32:8; 1 Kings 3:15-16)

KEYS TO PRODUCTIVE WORSHIP:

  1. Worship should be focused on the Person and Character of God (Isa. 43:21; Ps. 29:2)
Don’t confront God with your need first; worship Him for Who He is
  2. Worship should be done from the heart, not from the lips (Isa. 29:13; John 4:24)
    Let the worship move you
  3. Worship should be done from a clear conscience (Ps. 29:2; 2Chron. 5:13)

A FINAL WORD (PSALM 30:5):
Many times, things appear to get worse before a breakthrough/turnaround. You know that it is always darkest before dawn.

  1. Refuse to be moved by what you see, be moved by what He said
  2. Keep listening for Divine instruction, direction and revelation
  3. Act promptly on received instruction, direction or revelation
  4. Remain on your feet and keep moving; refuse to crumble
You don’t use a corrupt process to handle a corrupt practice; you don’t desecrate the constitution to correct a transgression; you don’t burn down a house to catch a thief

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS:

  • In the Name of Jesus, everything you came here with today that is not of God, it is arrested now!
  • A miracle that will bring tears to your eyes will happen to you today!
  • Everything that you came here with that my Father in Heaven has not planted, before this service is over, it will disappear and you won’t be aware!
  • In your finances, career, destiny, marriage and every realm of your life, you are going to shift to the next level!
  • God is giving you double for your trouble!
  • You shall not be ashamed! You shall speak with the enemy at the gate!
  • Very soon, your children, your cars and houses will be dedicated on this altar!
  • You shall have enough resources to take care of your children; none of them shall be liability children in Jesus’ Name!
  • Something that is beyond human comprehension is about to happen in your life; God is about to suspend protocols to give you a miracle!
  • Every mountain around your life is dissolved right now!
  • Whatever strong man is holding your life, family, children and resources, their grip is broken and you are free!
  • Your enemies shall never rejoice over your life! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • As you have cried unto the Lord and He has heard you, I prophesy, every infection in your blood, body and system is wiped out forever! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • He has brought you out of your grave and kept you alive; every spirit of death looking for you or your loved ones is arrested and sent back to hell! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • His favour is bringing you your possessions! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • This week, you will experience favour that will amaze you! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • God is turning your mourning into dancing! (Ps. 30:1-12)
  • Every wrong garment on your body – garment of sadness, depression and failure, is set on fire now!
  • There is someone with a climate of uncertainty, a fear of the unknown, I prophesy that uncertainty is cancelled!
  • Every reproach that has ever left you that the devil is trying to return to your life, I decree today, that reproach is returned back to the devil!
  • Every demonic threat addressed to your life, that threat is over!

Pope rules out change to priest celibacy rules

But the pontiff also said he remained open to investigating the possibility of ordaining older, well-respected married men in remote locations where clergy are in short supply.

Speaking to Reuters and AFP reporters, he said: “Personally, I think that celibacy is a gift to the Church. I am not in agreement (with those who say) optional celibacy should be permitted.”

The Catholic leader spoke on-board the papal plane as he returned to the Vatican from Panama, where he had been attending a gathering of young Catholics – World Youth Day.

Campaigners including members of the Movement for Married Clergy have argued that rules on celibacy have been deterring men from joining the priesthood.

Clergy in the Eastern Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches are allowed to marry.

In 2017, Premier reported how Pope Francis requested a debate over whether married men should be allowed to serve as priests in Brazil’s Amazon region.

There is no formal doctrinal barrier to married men becoming priests, meaning, theoretically, the rules could be changed.

An inquiry into child sexual abuse in Australia recommended in 2017 that the Catholic Church consider introducing voluntary celibacy for clergy.
