1 Samuel 2:12-17:
12 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.

13 And the priests’ custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

14 And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.

15 Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

16 And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.

17 Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

INTRODUCTION:
Parents have the duty to raise their children in love. God expects parents to bring up children who will love Him, live for Him and make positive impacts I’m the world. Deut. 6:5-7. While there are different styles of parenting in the world, believers should note that successful parenting is achievable.

The Permissive Parents:

This types of parents may give verbal comments to their children, but will take little or no action to correct them when they misbehave. Such parents usually equate discipline with meanness. They give in to most of the desires of their children. Eli, the priest, and Samson’s parents are biblical examples of permissive parents. (1 Sam. 2:12-17: 29-30; Judges 13:1-2; 14:1-3).

The Uninvolved Parents:

Such parents are self-oriented and they neglect their responsibilities. They have little or no time to attend to their children but rather pursue other concerns of life like career, business, ministry, pleasure etc. They show little or no concern for well-being of their children and hardly communicate with them. King David and Samuels were examples. (1King 1:5-6; 2Sam. 2:14:28; 1Sam. 8:1-5)

The Authoritarianism Parents

They run home with authority (iron fist) Children in such home have no voice or input whatsoever. That are “to be seen and not to be heard”. An authoritarian parent will use anger and harsh discipline to keep control. This behaviour may frustrate or causes child to lose heart and lack self-esteem. (Col. 3:21)
King Saul was an example. (1 Sam. 20:30).

The Influential Parents

The parents combine love and discipline without compromising either. They have clear boundaries but also very loving.

Children brought up in such homes are usually happy capable and successful. Mordecai, the adoptive parent of Esther. (Esther 2:1-10), Timothy’s mother and grandmother (2Tim.1:5-7; 3:14-15) are examples of influential parents in the bible.

GOD’S STYLE OF PARENTING

God, as the father of all, has clearly shown us the example of how to successfully raise our children. We need to follow in His footsteps. The Father loves and wants us to be involved with His children (Jer. 31:3; John 15:15; 16:27). He communicates clear instructions for us to follow(Pro. 4:3-4).
He forgives and show mercy when we fail(Heb. 8:12). He disciplines and corrects us when we disobey and rebel against Him(Pro. 3:12; Heb.12:7).
The Father models the truth (John 13:15) He encourages and comforts us. (1Thess. 2:11-12). He protects us from harm. (Heb. 11:23). He provides for His children. (Ps. 78: 23-25; 2Cor. 12:14).

CONCLUSION
Parents need to be careful not to either be extremely legalistic or
permissive. God’s pattern of parenting is balanced by His love, affirmation and grace.

Open Heaven 20 January 2019 Sunday MESSAGE:

There is a trait that God hates so much but many people don’t pay attention to, despite the many examples in the Bible that should deter them from it. This negative trait manifests itself in the form of trying to please men at the expense of loyalty to the Almighty God. Doing this arouses divine jealousy, and when we provoke God to jealously, the result can be devastating. When we choose to please men instead of God Almighty, we have made men our gods, and this is contrary to the commandment against idolatry in Exodus 20:3. It is unfortunate that many people do not know this. Some people try to please men because of the fear of what they can do to them. It should not be so with us believers. Our Lord warns us not to be afraid of men who can only kill the body; rather, we should fear the One who can destroy both the body and soul in hell.

An example of a man who was a “men pleaser” is King Saul. He bungled his throne because of the fear of men. When he was confronted with his blatant disobedience to the Lord’s instructions, he himself admitted in 1 Samuel 15:24:

“And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.”

On the other hand, the three young Hebrew men in Daniel 3:14-26 chose to please God, even in the face of a burning furnace. Although they were furiously thrown into the fire, the fire could not hurt them because the Son of the Living God was already waiting for them (Daniel 3:25). One thing we can learn from their experience is that even though they got into the fire, their salvation was already waiting for them in there. We must also learn to endure to the end because our ultimate salvation is reserved for us if we stay focused on God. In Matthew 10:22, Jesus said:

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”

Many people practically deny Jesus Christ for different reasons: persecution, fear of ridicule, and for some, because of what they will eat, drink or wear. For these reasons, some ladies cannot resist illicit sexual advances, while some men kill for money. In Matthew 10:32-33, Jesus said:

“32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.”

If you therefore desire a glorious future in heaven, you need to take a stand for Jesus, no matter what you may be going through.

The comic, called the ‘Second Coming’, is written by Mark Russell who recently described the set-up in an interview: “The concept is that God was so upset with Jesus’s performance the first time he came to Earth, since he was arrested so soon and crucified shortly after, that he has kept him locked-up since then.

“God then sees this superhero on Earth a few thousand years later and says ‘that’s what I wanted for you!’ He sends Jesus down to learn from this superhero and they end up learning from each other. They learn the limitations of each other’s approach to the world and its problems.”

The comic’s website says: “Witness the return of Jesus Christ, as He is sent on a most holy mission by God to learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind by becoming roommates with the world’s favourite saviour: the all-powerful super hero Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex! An extravagant musical, called ‘Heaven on Earth’, planned by the International Church in Mansfield Woodhouse near Nottingham was never actually put on. 

This week, former members revealed that the musical was the final straw for making them realise they needed to get out. 

Churchgoers at International Church were asked to contribute large amounts of money to tell the Biblical story of Adam and Eve with the costumes alone due to cost £300,000. 

According to the Times, the congregation were told if they were really Christians, they would donate the money.

One member said: “They said if we didn’t, God would be displeased and none of us wanted to displease God because we loved him”. 

Their family lost £100,000.

Many members remortgaged their homes or maxed out their credit cards. 

Details of the musical’s dodgy funding was unveiled in BBC’s Inside Out East Midlands show, with three other families speaking since of the ‘cult-like’ atmosphere initiated by the leadership of John Hibbert and Christine Jeffs, daughter of the original founder Jean Spademan. 

They had their holidays and bills paid for by the church and also insisted every member attended every Sunday service and dare not miss a cell group. 

The play was for many the final straw. 

The leaders from the village’s International Church created Eden International Productions Limited to make a promotional video and then a lavish stage production, supposedly involving Kerry Ellis and Hugh Maynard…

Deputy First Minister of Scotland tells Christian youth conference they are a “great example of Christian service”

The Deep Impact conference, held annually is a national training weekend in Scotland for Christian youth workers, organised by youth agencies and the Evangelical Alliance. 

This year, Nicola Sturgeon’s deputy and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills – John Swinney MSP – joined the 350 volunteers to deliver a speech of encouragement. 

In a keynote speech, the Deputy First Minister said that the Deep Impact conference was a “great example of Christian service” and that the Scottish Government “appreciates the valuable contribution our Christian communities make to Scottish society, including supporting many of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities”.

Swinney said: “Deep Impact is a wonderful celebration of best practice in the Christian youth and children’s work sector, and I look forward to opening the conference this weekend. It is a great opportunity to thank volunteers in person for the valuable work they do across a range of different projects throughout Scotland.

He praised them for promoting interfaith dialogue, “a goal the Scottish Government strongly shares and promotes as a way to strengthen and enhance connections across communities, lower barriers, eliminate fear and increase understanding.

Govt’s special envoy for freedom of religion asked about detained pastor in China

In a series of questions directed at the Foreign Office, Lord Alton of Liverpool, a peer and Christian, asked in the House of Lords on Friday: “what representations they have made to the government of the People’s Republic of China following (1) the destruction of crosses and shrines, (2) the closure of Christian churches, and (3) the arrest of pastors, including the detention of Pastor Wang Yi and his wife Jiang Rong of Early Rain Covenant Church, just before Christmas 2018.”

In December last year, Chinese police detained 100 members of the Protestant Early Rain Church in Sichuan province, including the Pastor Wang Yi. Later, all apart from twelve were released, with the preacher and his wife Jiang Rong still detained. 

The congregants were charged with ‘inciting subversion’, a national security charge used frequently against religious leaders. 

David Alton, a former Liberal Democrat MP, was answered on this issue by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the Government’s special envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief. 

Lord Ahmad said: “We are concerned by the arrest and detention of Pastor Wang Yi and his wife Jiang Rong. We believe the restrictions placed on Christianity and other religions in China, that include individuals being harassed or detained for their beliefs are unacceptable. 18th-25th January has been designated the ‘Week of Prayer for Christian Unity’ since 1908. 

This year, Christian Aid have written daily reflections and prayer points have been prepared by churches in Indonesia – where about 10% of the population are Christian and 86% Muslim.

Each day has a Bible reading, a prayer and some reflections on how to pray for the more than 17,000 Indonesian islands, including praying for justice, against corruption and for unity in such a diverse nation. 

Rev Peter Colwell, Deputy General of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland told Premier the week is put on “so that we might be might be better at Christian witness.

“Let me quote the great Desmond Tutu, when he speaking to the World Council of Churches some years ago during the struggle for apartheid he said a divided church was not strong enough to resist apartheid. So if we’re about evangelism and mission and service to the world…we can’t do that if we’re divided.”

Rev Peter acknowledged that churches inherit a lot of historical divisions for all sorts of reasons, because of matters of faith, politics and conflict within society: “sometimes they relate to how we understand the Christian faith, it’s a matter of emphasis, sometimes it’s some of those very difficult issues, for example, do we agree that one should be pacifist or that we can justify war in some cases?

In life, until you dare to be different, you cannot make any difference; the family that must make a difference must do things differently. God never consulted man before He instituted marriage and the family.

When God steps into a family no matter how battered and shattered the family is, it turns out to be great. Without God in a family, every effort will be futile. Every family that must have life must have God; God can bring something out of nothing. The Word of God (as a Spirit) is what guarantees life, beauty and elegance in every successful family.

John 6:63 (KJV) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

God has given us the manual to operate the family which is the Bible. The word of God must be your foundation in life and family. To be different in life and family is dependent on the attention you give to God and His Word. No man will make any impact until he accepts change; ability to change has great rewards. Your ability to change is an evidence of maturity and maturity is not of age but of understanding of the Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The Word of God is an effective key for establishing a family with a difference and so it must be your guiding tool. You must value the word of God because it is the compass of your life. You must come to a conclusion that whatever God’s Word says is final.

Genesis 2:18 (KJV) And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Marriage is for help and not for hurt. Husband and wife are meant to be helpers in all areas of life; spiritually, mentally, socially, physically, financially and otherwise.

Genesis 2:15, 19 (KJV) And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Any man who is not productive in life should not go for a wife. You must develop yourself and be able to accept responsibility and take decisions. In marriage, you must be able to develop yourself mentally in order to be of help to your spouse. Your family cannot enjoy distinction if you remain idle. Idleness breeds poverty. God believes in work; He created the earth and gave man work to till the garden and name the creatures before He gave him a wife (Eve); so it is work before marriage. Abraham was a very intelligent worker; joblessness is an enemy of distinction.

Proverbs 10:4 (KJV) He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

No lazy man has a future in God’s kingdom. Idleness leads to begging and begging is not noble. As a woman, don’t be idle irrespective of how wealthy your husband may be. Engage yourself in work. For a man to depend on his wife for livelihood is not wise. If Jesus could work and you do not work, who will you then look like? Idleness is a barrier that hinders the possibility of God blessing you; it does not matter if you are a giver. God does not reward idleness; he rewards and blesses the work of your hands.

Ensure you are doing something; God will use that work to enlarge and announce you to your world. Rather than waiting for who will employ you, you can discover how to do your own business by being creative. By so doing, you discover your potential thereby increasing your worth; provision will be guaranteed and you help others instead of waiting for who will give you money. As you apply these principles from today, your family will always be distinguished in Jesus name –Amen!

Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord. – Psalm 121:1–2

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Psalm 121:1-8

What determines our direction in life? I once heard an answer to that question in a surprising place: a motorcycle training course. Some friends and I wanted to ride, so we took a class to learn how. Part of our training dealt with something called target fixation.

“Eventually,” our instructor said, “you’re going to face an unexpected obstacle. If you stare at it—if you target fixate—you’ll steer right into it. But if you look above and past it to where you need to go, you can usually avoid it.” Then he added, “Where you’re looking is the direction you’re going to go.”

That simple-but-profound principle applies to our spiritual lives too. When we “target fixate”—focusing on our problems or struggles—we almost automatically orient our lives around them.

However, Scripture encourages us to look past our problems to the One who can help us with them. In Psalm 121:1, we read, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?” The psalm then answers: “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. . . . The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (vv. 2, 8).

Sometimes our obstacles can seem insurmountable. But God invites us to look to Him to help us see beyond our troubles instead of letting them dominate our perspective.

Today’s Reflection
Father, help me not to “target fixate,” but to look to You whenever I face fearful obstacles as I seek to follow You along life’s road.
