BIBLE PASSAGE: Nehemiah 5:14-19 KJV (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 2 December 2018)

14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

19 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Generally, politics can be described as the methodology and activities associated with running a government, an organization or a movement. Politics is all about influence. It is this influence that further births positive or negative changes in the lives of the people. The involvement of Christians in politics is neither secular nor beyond the ideologies of Christianity because it is the desire of God that believers take charge and have influence here on earth. Gen. 1:28; Matt. 5:13-16.

LESSON AIM: To study the role of Christians in politics.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:

(i) Discover misconceptions about politics.
(ii) Understand why Christians should be involved in politics.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, teachers should:

(I) Allow the students to read the bible passage, recite the memory verse, review the previous week’s lesson, participate in the class activities and do the assignment.
(ii) Allow Assistant teacher to conduct the class, mark attendance and assignment, grade performance and close the class session with the closing prayer.
(iii) Lead the opening prayer, review previous week’s lesson, teach the lesson outlines, summarize, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: Nehemiah 5:14-19- “GET INVOLVED”.

(i) In addition to the ruin of the city wall of Jerusalem in about 430 BC, the city was bedeviled by all manner of economic hardship of extortion, treachery, hunger, famine, poverty and political gangsters of the governors and rulers who compounded the hardship of the people. Nehemiah 5:1-9.

(ii) This wicked state of the land gave Nehemiah sleepless nights and aches and he decided to consult and address other governors who were grievously oppressing the people. He also put them under oath to desist from the evil and walk in the fear of God instead. Thank God they promised to change their evil ways. Nehemiah 5:9-13.

(iii) Nehemiah on his own part was a true agent of change and demonstrated the following six spheres of commitments to the people as the Governor of Judah. Nehemiah 5:14.

(a) Commitment to transparent and accountable administration. Neh. 5:14-15.

(b) Commitment to the fear of God and to the people. Neh. 5:15.

(c) Commitment to the work of God and restoration of the dignity of the city of Jerusalem and Judah. Neh. 5:16.

(d) Commitment to the welfare of the people. Neh. 5:17.

(e) Commitment to poverty alleviation. Neh. 15:18.

(f) Commitment to good governance. Neh. 15:19.

Nehemiah changed the structure and attitude of the people by being involved. Therefore, get involved.

TEACHING METHOD: Combination of questions/answers and lecture method.

TIME MANAGEMENT: Standard time for two (2) lesson outlines.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. Misconceptions about politics
2. Why should Christians be involved in politics?

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT POLITICS
Some Christians are of the opinion that, since our kingdom is not of this world, we do not have to be involved in any political activity in the world we presently live in (John 17:14). This is not the whole truth but a misconception aimed at robbing us of our godly heritage of dominion (Psalm 8:6; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelations 5:10). Here are some reasons for the misconception or wrong notions about involvement of Christians in politics;
1. Politics is a dirty game and a worldly affair.
2. Political involvements will take one to hell.
3. All politicians are liars, corrupt and promiscuous.
4. It is an opportunity to embezzle money or amass wealth unlawfully.
5. Most politicians are fetish or occultic.

WHY SHOULD CHRISTIANS BE INVOLVED IN POLITICS?
In order to disabuse our minds as Christians about our active involvement in politics, we need to consider the following reasons objectively:
1. It is the desire of God that believers take charge and have influence here on earth (Deuteronomy 28:13). We are to take the lead and allow kingdom values to shape our society (Matthew 5:13-16).
2. The leaders we elect, or fail to elect have great influence on our freedom, well-being and the fulfilment of our God-given mandate. They can choose to protect our right to worship and spread the gospel, or prevent us from exercising such rights (Esther 4:14; Daniel 6:7).

4. The involvement of godly Christians in politics will reduce corruption, disorderliness, mischief and other socio-economic vices in the society (2 Chronicles 14:1-6; Proverbs 29:2).
5. To effect positive and lasting changes that will benefit the society (Genesis 41:33-40; Proverbs 14:34).

CONCLUSION:
God is still looking for the righteous few, in order to uplift our nations (Genesis 18:32).

QUESTIONS:
1. Mention 4 misconceptions believers have about politics
2. Why should Christians be involved in politics?

Snoop Dogg Takes the Stage, Tells Story of Redemption Following His Chart Topping Gospel Album

Snoop Dogg Takes the Stage, Tells Story of Redemption Following His Chart Topping Gospel Album

Veteran rap artist Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., announced that he was a born-again Christian as he released his first ever gospel album.

The 17-time Grammy nominated rapper and R&B artist released his album Bible of Love in March of this year which features big names in the gospel music industry including Fred Hammons, the Clark Sisters, Marvin Sapp and Pastor John P. Kee.

In an interview with the LA Sentinel newspaper, Snoop said the project had always been in his heart, but it took him being tested and feeling like he had a testimony to share to get the project off the ground. He told the Sentinel, “It has always been in my heart, but I had always put it in the back of my mind. So, now I put it on the front of my mind.”

Snoop noted that he was working on a “gangster album” before he started his gospel project, but he felt rushed by the process. When he fell into the gospel album, however, he said he felt a sense of calm.

Snoop told the LA Sentinel, “When I got to this, I felt a breath of fresh air like there was no stress, no pressure.”

When talking about the album’s release with Hollywood Today, the musician noted that his mother was an evangelical Christian, and she had been waiting for a long time for Snoop to answer God’s call to make worship music.

He said about his mother’s…

Death of Missionary Sparks Debate over Mission Work

Death of Missionary Sparks Debate over Mission Work

(RNS) — Some call him a martyr.

Others call him a colonialist.

A few just call him tragically misguided.

Almost everyone, it seems, has an opinion about John Allen Chau.

When Indian officials reported last week that the young American missionary had died at the hands of indigenous people living on a protected island off the coast of India, a heated dispute erupted in Christian circles. As his story continues to capture international attention, the debate intensifies over his approach to spreading the Christian gospel at North Sentinel Island — and whether he should have been there at all.

Much of the discussion is rooted in Chau’s 13-page account of his final days, which was shared by his mother with The Washington Post.

According to the handwritten diary, he convinced several local fishermen to bring him as close as possible to North Sentinel Island on Nov. 14, at which point he paddled to shore in a kayak. He described seeing women “looing and chattering” before being confronted by men wielding bows and arrows.

“My name is John, I love you and Jesus loves you,” he shouted at them, according to the journal. He then threw a fish at the Sentinelese and fled.

He returned the next day with a bevy of gifts — fish, scissors and a safety pin. When a man wearing a crown shouted at him, he sang worship songs and hymns until a boy shot an arrow that stuck in…

Reports of beatings to drive out ‘evil spirits’ from kids rise

Social workers recorded 1,630 claims of child abuse linked to faith or belief (CALFB), compared to 1,460 in the previous year, Department for Education figures reveal.

Justin Humphreys from the Christian child safeguarding charity ThirtyOne:Eight told Premier the figures concern a “hidden problem” and are probably just the “tip of the iceberg”.

He said: “There’s probably going to be a significant amount of surprise because this is an area that we still need to know more about.”

Cases might also include false accusations of children being witches or forcing them to undergo exorcisms.

Justin Humphreys continued: “What we, sadly, find is that disabled children and children with mental health difficulties are likely to feature highly in these figures.”

According to the National FGM Centre – a group which tackles harmful cultural practises – child abuse linked to faith or belief might even include the killing of children in the hope their death brings supernatural benefits.

Justin Humphreys said CALFB can affect people of various faiths and none – adding that churches must help expose the problem.

Bible inscribed by Einstein expected to sell for $300,000 in auction

The physicist gifted the holy book in 1932 to Harriet Hamilton, a temporary secretary of his wife Elsa, the auction house claims.

Einstein wrote on a blank page in German: “This book is an inexhaustible source of living wisdom and consolation.

“Read therein and think thereon. A. Einstein.”

One of the world’s most famous scientists, Einstein was often asked to make public pronouncements about God and religion.

Cassandra Hatton, senior specialist in Sotheby’s books and manuscripts department told financial news site Barron’s: “We’re thrilled to be offering the only bible signed and inscribed by Albert Einstein to ever come to auction.

Sothbey's

“This alone is a rare and exciting moment, but what is even more compelling is Einstein’s inscription.”

Hattan added that the inscription is likely to spark new debates about Einstein’s beliefs.

The Bible is expected to get between $200,000 and US$300,000.

My visit to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC

I toured the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, yesterday.

The Museum is truly amazing. Its 430,000-square-foot building is located just three blocks from the US Capitol and has been rated one of the ten best museums in Washington.

It is an immersive experience in the history and stories of God’s word. Walking through its galleries took me back to the first century and demonstrated the impact of Scripture on humanity.

I cannot imagine a more powerful or persuasive witness at the heart of our nation’s capital.

As I toured the Museum of the Bible, I was struck by the difference one person can make. The Museum is the vision of Steve Green, the president of Hobby Lobby and son of the founder, David Green. The Green family has largely funded the $500 million project.

Every person who visits will be impacted by their faith and faithfulness to our Father.

“People are increasingly hopeless”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced yesterday that suicides and drug overdoses have driven life expectancy down in the United States. Overall, there were 2.8 million US deaths last year, nearly 70,000 more than the previous year and the most deaths in a single year since the government began counting more than a century ago.

What is driving this epidemic of drug overdoses and suicide?

Dr. William Dietz, a disease prevention expert at George Washington University: “I really do believe that people are increasingly hopeless, and that that leads to drug use, it leads potentially to suicide.”

It’s tempting to become hopeless about the hopelessness of our culture. But that’s exactly the wrong response.

From lockup to opera

Consider Ryan Speedo Green (no relation to Steve Green), a former juvenile delinquent who was incarcerated as a twelve-year-old after he pulled a knife on his mother and brother.

A teacher named Elizabeth Hughes contacted him at the lockup. “Don’t let this moment define you,” she told him. “You can be better….

Rev Richard Coles to officiate wedding in Holby City cameo

The pop star-turned-vicar will play a vicar officiating a wedding ceremony between two as-yet unknown characters in the long-running BBC One medical drama.

Rev Coles said: “Thrilled to be invited finally to exercise my ministry of healing at Holby City, which has been my healthcare provider of choice for 20 years.

He added, referring to the villainous character played by Paul McGann: “And to officiate at an occasion so joyous even the late Professor Gaskell would have cracked a smile.”

Rev Coles, 56, is best known as one half of pop duo The Communards, who had 1980s hits including Don’t Leave Me This Way and Never Can Say Goodbye, and in 2017 he appeared in Strictly Come Dancing.

He will join other confirmed guest stars Gemma Oaten, Amanda Henderson and Jenny Howe in the special episode on December 11.

Storyline details are scant, but Simon Harper, executive producer of Holby City and Casualty, said: “After a dark year for the hospital, Holby is now revving up for Christmas and 2019 in this joyous episode celebrating love and commitment in all their diverse forms.

“As to which Holby couple ends up actually tying the knot, I couldn’t possibly divulge, but I can say it’s an incredible honour to have the iconic Reverend Richard officiating.”

Further guest stars will be announced for the episode, the BBC said.

‘Paranormal investigators’ blocked from South Yorkshire church graveyard

Rotherham-based Paranormal-X PXTV had planned to gather in Rawmarsh last weekend but St Mary’s Church threatened legal action if they went ahead.

The parochial church council (PCC) erected a sign warning against the event going ahead, saying it went against its Christian values.

It read: “The PCC wishes to clearly state that this is a Christian burial site and the planned event is in direct contradiction to Christian doctrine as understood by the Church of England.

“Paranormal-X have no permission to gather in these grounds for the planned purpose, and should the event go ahead, the organisers may be subject to legal proceedings.”

Paranormal-X PXTV, which was founded in 2015, has visited the church in the past, including during two occasions in the summer of 2016.

Founder and psychic, Mark Smith, told Premier: “I understand the church’s perspective, given their beliefs which are based on doctrine and scripture but I do think it was a little unfair.

“It [the church] has got a public right of way. As far as I was concerned, I wasn’t doing anything wrong.

“It’s not like we were going in there causing criminal damage or being disrespectful.”

Premier approached St Mary’s but the church declined to comment.
