Our Daily Bread 20 November 2018 Devotional – On the Wrong Side?

Topic: On the Wrong Side? [Our Daily Bread 20 November 2018 Devotional]

Read: Philippians 1:12–18, Bible in a Year: Ezekiel 14–15; James 2

What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. Philippians 1:12

When the bridge to Techiman, Ghana, washed out, residents of New Krobo on the other side of the Tano River were stranded. Attendance at Pastor Samuel Appiah’s church in Techiman suffered too because many of the members lived in New Krobo—on the “wrong” side of the river.

Amid the crisis, Pastor Sam was trying to expand the church’s children’s home to care for more orphans. So he prayed. Then his church sponsored outdoor meetings across the river in New Krobo. Soon they were baptizing new believers in Jesus. A new church took root. Not only that, New Krobo had space to care for the orphans awaiting housing. God was weaving His restorative work into the crisis.

When the apostle Paul found himself on the “wrong” side of freedom, he didn’t lament his situation. In a powerful letter to the church in Philippi, he wrote, “I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12). Paul noted how his chains had led to “the whole palace guard” learning about Christ (v. 13). And others had gained confidence to share the good news of Jesus (v. 14).

Despite obstacles, Pastor Sam and the apostle Paul found God showing them new ways to work in their crises. What might God be doing in our challenging circumstances today?

Prayer: Lord, sometimes we feel as though we’re on the wrong side of a particular situation. We know You are everywhere. Help us see You.

God is at work in the mess. That’s the message of the Bible. Matt Chandler

INSIGHT
Scholars believe Paul was reminiscing about his ministry in Rome when he wrote Philippians 1:12–14. According to Acts 28:16–31, Paul was under house arrest but “was permitted to have his own private lodging, though he was guarded by a soldier” (v. 16 nlt). In those two years, Paul had the rare opportunity to proclaim “the kingdom of God” and to teach “about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!” (vv. 30–31). In particular, he proclaimed God’s truth to the palace guards, Caesar’s elite troops (Philippians 1:13). Paul hinted of an unspecified number in “Caesar’s household”—court officials and dignitaries—who had come to faith (4:22). Writing from Rome, Paul’s primary concern was not his freedom, but being faithful to preach Christ (1:18–19), to be fruitful (v. 22), and to glorify Christ, whether he lived or died (v. 20). In a later Roman imprisonment (2 Timothy 1:17), Paul wrote that though he was “chained like a criminal . . . . God’s word [was] not chained” (2:9).

Seeds of Destiny 20 November 2018 Devotional: The Dangerous Withdrawal

Topic: The Dangerous Withdrawal [Seeds of Destiny 20 November 2018 Devotional]

Scripture: And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. Genesis 38:18

Thought For The Day: The altar of iniquity is the altar of wastage of wealth.

Our anchor Scripture reveals to us that every sinful action of man robs him of his treasures. When a person decides to compromise, he has given the enemy the opportunity to make withdrawals from his life.

From the account of Judah in Genesis 38:1-26, Judah lost his signet, and bracelets, and staff on the platform of iniquity. The signet represents seal (signature); so when Judah gave out his signature, he agreed that withdrawals should be made from the blessing deposited in his life. The bracelets are the symbol of wealth and prosperity. Every time a person engages in sinful pleasure, he is wasting away the wealth of his life; the altar of iniquity is the altar of wastage of wealth. The staff represents authority. So, Judah lost his authority on the platform of sinful pleasure.

Beloved, iniquity undermines authority. You don’t have a voice to speak in the world of the spirit if your conscience is not clear.

The truth is, sin makes demand on a person’s riches, wealth and authority. Most people would have been better than what they are today if not for the destructive pleasure of sins like drinking alcohol, stealing, lying, immorality, deception, watching corrupt movies, robbery, etc.

The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23); on the altar of sin, something dies in a person’s life.

Beloved, receive the grace to live right, in Jesus’ Name.

Remember this: The altar of iniquity is the altar of wastage of wealth.

Assignments:
1. Be eternity conscious; think about God’s possible reaction before taking actions in life.
2. Avoid the life of compromise.
3. Keep your spiritual life aflame by fellowshipping with the Brethren, consistent praying, studying the Word of God and fasting at least once a week.

Prayer: O Lord, I cannot do without You. Guide me through this sinful world. Help me to live for You alone, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

11-Year-Old ‘Trailblazing’ Child Drag Queen Promoted on Good Morning America

11-Year-Old ‘Trailblazing’ Child Drag Queen Promoted on Good Morning America

ABC’s Good Morning America celebrated an 11-year-old drag queen as a trailblazer this month, although many viewers pushed back and said the show had crossed the line in sexualizing children.

Host Michael Strahan introduced a video of Desmond Napoles — also known as “Desmond Is Amazing” — by saying the child was “inspiring to many” and was “trailblazing” a path for other children. Strahan also called it an “amazing story.”

Moments later, after the video, the boy strutted down a runway toward the Good Morning America set, wearing a blonde wig and a yellow and white dress.

In the video, Napoles said his mom doesn’t let him drink caffeine but that she is proud of his drag queen sidelife.

“I love to put on makeup, dresses and wigs and of course jewelry,” he said. “I feel very happy to have a mom that accepts me.”

His mom, Wendylou Napoles, then said, “It really touches me deeply that there are other children out there that he’s reaching and they’re listening to him and he’s influencing them to be themselves.”

Napoles performs throughout New York City as a drag queen. He wore women’s clothes and marched at a gay pride event at age 8.

“I love doing drag because it makes me feel amazing and self-expressive,” he told Good Morning America. “My one big message would be … be yourself…

Celine Dion Launches Gender Neutral Baby Clothing Line with “New Order” Slogan

Celine Dion Launches Gender Neutral Baby Clothing Line with “New Order” Slogan

In what she is calling a “new order,” award-winning singer Celine Dion has launched a gender-neutral clothing line collaboration.

The “My Heart Will Go On” singer has partnered with clothing company NUNUNU to create a clothing line called CELINUNUNU for babies and young kids which according to the website, “liberates children from the traditional roles of boy/girl and enables younger people to grow on values of equality with the freedom to strengthen their own power of personality based on mutual respect.”

The website goes on to say, “People, and for that matter—little humans, express themselves through clothes. We would like to enable them to be who they are, so that their choices are driven by their own true essence and free spirit, beyond stereotypes or any norm.”

In an ad that was released last week, Dion is seen standing in a hospital nursery surrounded by babies in pink and blue onesies.

She says, “Our children, they are not really our children, as we are all just links in a never-ending chain that is life.”

She continues, “For us, they are everything, but in reality, we are only a fraction of their universe.”

“We miss the past. They dream of tomorrow. We may thrust them forward into the future, but the course will always be theirs to choose,” she continued.

The singer then pulls out a box of black glitter and…

Colorado School Requires that Christians Allow Atheists to Lead Bible Studies

Colorado School Requires that Christians Allow Atheists to Lead Bible Studies

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is being sued after demanding that a Christian organization permit “atheists or other non-Christians to lead their Bible studies” in order to be recognized on campus.

While the school officials declined to comment on the situation, the Alliance Defending Freedom stated that: “The university refused to grant Ratio Christi registered status because it only allows those who share and personally hold beliefs consistent with the group’s mission to serve as its leaders.”

“As a Christian apologetics organization, Ratio Christi seeks to defend the Christian faith and explain how the Bible applies to various current cultural, ethical, and political issues. Any student can attend its events. Any student of any faith can become a member of Ratio Christi, as long as he supports the group’s purpose. But Ratio Christi requires that those who lead the Christian organization must share its religious beliefs. As a result, the university has denied it registered status, limiting its access to funding, meeting and event space, and administrative support,” said the legal team.

The lawsuit disputes the school’s belief that it can refuse registered status to groups if they choose leaders that agree with the group’s religious outlooks.

Additionally, it notes other biased actions by the school against the…

Govt minister says Christians have the power to transform prisons

Over 500 people gathered at HTB church in Kensington in London on Monday to hear from ex-offenders, prison chaplains, judges and alpha prisons leaders.

Being interviewed by HTB’s pastor Nicky Gumbel was Rory Stewart MP, the government’s prisons minister since January this year, who claimed in August that if he couldn’t reduce violence and drugs use in prisons in 12 months he would resign.

With nine months to go on that commitment, Stewart told Gumbel how he still believes it’s possible and how Christians are in a prime position to contribute to the rehabilitation process, another one of his responsibilities in the ministry of justice.

The former diplomat first spoke of the influence of his own faith in his life, saying: “I find it the most – for me – the most wonderful cornerstone of my life”.

When asked what Christians can do alongside politicians to cut down re-offending rates, Stewart replied: “I think Christians do have a very important and special role in dealing with prisoners – that’s partly because of the centrality of prisoners in the Bible.

“We have to remember that St Paul was a prisoner, that many of the people that we admire most in our church, many of the early martyrs and saints were prisoners and that continues to be true today.”

“It is the fundamental insight that each one of us is the unique inheritor of God and that none of us can be distinguished -…

Hard-Line Sikhs, Hindus Persecute Christians in Northern India

Hard-Line Sikhs, Hindus Persecute Christians in Northern India

HYDERABADIndia, November 19, 2018 (Morning Star News) – Villagers hostile toward Christians in northern India falsely accused a pastor of an illicit relationship with a woman and, in another village, burned a church building, sources said.

As people throughout the country on Nov. 7 prepared to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, neighbors alerted pastor Satpal Masih that his Pentecostal church building in Giddi village, Gurdaspur District in Punjab state, was ablaze.

The pastor dismissed the notion that the church building caught fire from a festival accident, saying Diwali begins well after 8 p.m., and he rushed to the burning building at 6 p.m.

“Moreover, the church is built on a farm, and it is nearly impossible that anybody would go onto a farm to play with fireworks,” Pastor Masih told Morning Star News. “After looking into all possibilities, we understand that it is an act done by some elements who oppose the ministry in the area. Police came to the spot and filed a First Information Report [FIR] after conducting a preliminary investigation. They clearly said that it can’t be an accident.”

He said the fire seemed to have been set on Diwali to look like a fireworks accident, but that there was no evidence of any such explosives and no loud noises until plastic chairs and equipment inside caught fire.

“In fact, it was a massive fire, and…

Giant toilet inflated at St Paul’s Cathedral for World Toilet Day

A giant toilet has been erected on the steps of St Paul’s cathedral.

It’s to mark World Toilet Day.

Tearfund’s Toilet Twinning initiative planned the “Big Squat” event at 1pm noon today which saw Bill Oddie OBE perform his “Toilet Song” to passers-by and tourists in the capital.

Pedestrians at St Pauls were also treated to MumSing Choir who sang “Lean on me” and “You’ve got a friend” on the steps of the Cathedral.

Toilet Twinning raise funds to provide proper toilets, clean water and hygiene training in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Speaking at the event, Bill Oddie told Premier that toilets were no laughing matter. He said: “There’s nothing funny about it, in fact there’s something very harmful. If a community doesn’t have working toilets and fresh water, they have a big problem.”

Christians are being urged to twin their lavatory with one in the developing world.

Toilet Twinning CEO Lorraine Kingsley told Premier: “2.3 billion people across this planet don’t have a loo, and that particularly affects women and girls.”

“Let’s realise we are so fortunate to have a loo, we don’t think of it as a luxury item in this country but in so many places in this world it is a luxury item.”

“People don’t have one [a loo], and when they don’t have one, they’re sick, and not able to get out of poverty.”

For Lorraine, it’s a matter…

Woman Who Lost All Four Limbs Thanks God for Saving Her Life, Lives a Joyful Life

Woman Who Lost All Four Limbs Thanks God for Saving Her Life, Lives a Joyful Life

A woman who lost all of her limbs due to a severe infection says her faith in God helped her choose to live her life with joy.

Kayleigh Ferguson-Walker, of Coral Springs, Fla., lost both arms and legs after she became ill with Sepsis in early 2017. She was six months pregnant with her second child when she became sick. Doctors were not able to save the baby, and she was taken to a hospital for surgery.

“Her family was at the bedside,” said Dr. James Fletcher, Kayleigh’s doctor. “They had left the previous hospital and come to our hospital with some hope we might be able to restore circulation, but in this situation, there was just nothing additionally that could be done.”

Kayleigh has undergone some 13 surgeries. Today, Kayleigh uses a prosthetic and is adapting to her new lifestyle.

“I try to look at the side ‘let’s see what I can do,'” she said. “I challenge myself a lot what I can do rather than just sit here and be like okay I can’t do nothing, ain’t got no limbs. No, I can’t think that way.

“Many people come to me and my family and say ‘how does she keep that smile through everything she’s going through. She just lost her limbs; how does she keep her smile?’ And I always say to them I don’t smile because I have no bad days. I smile because I’m still here.”

Kayleigh and her husband, Ramon are members of Praise Tabernacle International. Their…

Anglican bishop claims second referendum on Brexit would ‘make things worse’

Speaking to Premier in the House of Lords, where he is representing the Church of England this week, Dr Steven Croft said the UK needs to get behind the “process of negotiation”.

On the idea of a referendum, he said: “My own view is that it would make things worse and it would open up the more fundamental questions again.”

“The process of negotiation, which the Prime Minister is leading, is to try and find the right way of reconfiguring our relationship [with the EU] – that’s something the whole nation can coalesce around.”

“It’s an immensely challenging task and I pray for her daily in it.”

Last month, hundreds of thousands took to the streets of London to call for a second referendum.

The bishop was speaking as the Prime Minister continues her campaign to win support for her Brexit plan.

Speaking to business leaders in London, Theresa May said she’s secured a deal that will work for the UK – and no-one should be in any doubt she’s “determined to deliver it.”

PA

It’s still unclear whether she will face a leadership challenge.

It’s unknown whether the number of MPs who are calling for a vote of no confidence in her has reached the needed 48.
