This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:21-23

God is faithful. He’s full of compassion. His mercies are new every morning. As a believer, you know all that. But simply knowing it is not enough.

For it to do you any good, you have to recall it. You have to remember it again and again in order to rekindle your hope and stir your faith.

So, make it a point to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness every morning. Remind yourself of the benefits that are yours in Jesus.

What are those benefits? Psalm 103 spells them out:

1. He forgives all your sins.

2. He heals all your diseases.

3. He redeems your life from destruction.

4. He crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.

5. He satisfies your mouth with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6. He executes righteousness and judgment for you against oppression.

7. He sets you free.

8. He makes known His ways to you.

9. He gives you His grace and mercy in times of need.

Make it a point every morning to say those things out loud to the Lord. Stand before Him in prayer and recall His mercies to you. Keep it up and you’ll be stronger in faith and more confident of God’s love than you’ve ever been before.

Don’t just settle for knowing God’s blessings. Remember them every day and watch them come alive in you.

Pastor Francis Chan Baptizes His Best Friend after 30 Years of Persistent Prayer


Author and pastor Francis Chan revealed on Wednesday that after praying for his best friend for 30 years, he has decided to dedicate his life to Christ. 


In a blog post on Desiringgod.org, Chan shared with readers how he saw prayer working in his life when his best friend from college decided to get baptized after years of refusing to believe in Christ. 


He wrote, “We all walk in complete spiritual darkness unless God decides to shine his light on us. In some mysterious way, God shines light in a person’s heart so that he instantly sees the beauty of the Gospel. No amount of human effort can produce this. Salvation is a miracle of God,” he said of his friend’s salvation.


He continued, “Many of us would say that we believe this theological truth, but our actions betray us, revealing just how much we trust in people, speeches, and events. On more than one occasion, people have begged me to speak to their lost friends, believing that my words would make the difference.”


“Too often, I have granted their wish (rather than correcting their theology), and tried desperately to come up with the perfect words to talk their friends into falling in love with Jesus. Do you see yet how ridiculous this is?” He questioned.

John 18:10 “Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.”

Text: John 18:10-11

It is the apostle John who reveals Peter as the one who cut off the servant’s ear and also identifies the servant. It is very doubtful that Peter was aiming for Malchus’ ear. It is more probable that he was making a horizontal swing at the servant’s head and as the man ducked, Peter cut off his ear.

Peter was very vocal about never denying the Lord, and his actions proved that he meant what he said. There were only two swords among the disciples, yet Peter was willing to take on these six hundred soldiers. This spelled certain death or imprisonment.

Peter wanted to stand with the Lord, but he was not prepared spiritually. He was still strong in his own ability. If the battle would have been in the physical realm, Peter would have fought to the death as he proved here. But when Jesus told Peter to put up his sword and not resist with his physical power, Peter was confused.

Peter only knew how to rely on the flesh. When Jesus refused to allow Peter to fight with his sword, he was defenseless. If he would have been praying with Jesus, as instructed, Peter would have been built up spiritually and able to stand with Jesus spiritually without denying Him. As the prophet Zechariah said, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts” (Zech. 4:6).

Likewise, we may sincerely desire to never deny our Lord, but it takes more than desire; it takes preparation. We all have been taught how to rely on ourselves, but we have to learn anew how to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Eph. 6:10). Just as in the physical realm, where muscles have to be exercised to become strong, so we have to exercise ourselves unto godliness (1 Tim. 4:7).

Absconded murderer spotted in Hampshire church

Sussex Police have released a CCTV image of Jeremy Brabrooke at St Faith’s Church in Havant, Hampshire.

 

The 56-year-old left Ford Prison in West Sussex on Wednesday November 14 and was spotted at the church later the same day.

A police spokesman said: “Officers are keen to locate and detain the 56-year-old, who was last seen at the prison on Wednesday (14 November).

“He was captured on CCTV at St Faith’s Church in Havant, Hampshire, later that same day.

“He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1988 for murder in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and is known to have links to Hayling Island and Portsmouth in Hampshire.

“Anyone who sees him or knows where he may be is asked to call 999.

“You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Teacher Banned from School after Complimenting Students Who Stood for Pledge


A popular substitute teacher says he was let go from a Missouri high school after thanking students for standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.  


The teacher, 66-year-old Jim Furkin, had been a long-time sub at Parkway South High School in Manchester, Mo., as well at other schools, according to Fox 2 television. 


“The PA announcer says please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance,” Furkin told Fox 2. “I say, ‘Let’s go.’”


Of the 24 students, 22 stood for the Pledge. 


“I say, ‘thank-you very much, all of you that participated. I appreciate that. I’m sure all of those families that lost loved ones so we could have the freedoms we have today would appreciate that, too.’ That’s what I said,” Furkin added.


Furkin – who subbed at the school for a decade – said it was no different than complimenting one person for a hairstyle and not everyone else, Fox 2 reported. 


At least one of the students complained, and Furkin soon was told he could no longer substitute at the school but could sub elsewhere. His action, he was told, was a form of bullying.  


“I just think that I would try to convey something like that to the kids who just take everything for granted,” he said. “That flag is not to be taken for granted, in my opinion. It is our symbol of freedom.”

Public trust in clergy falls again

The latest survey by Ipsos Mori shows only 62 per cent of people say they trust clergy to tell the truth.

 

That compares with 69 per cent two years ago and 85 per cent in 1983 when the first survey was done by the organisation.

Ipsos Mori asked 1,001 people about whether they trust different professions to tell the truth.

At the top were nurses on 96 per cent and doctors on 92 per cent closely followed by teachers on 89 per cent.

At the bottom were politicians on 19 per cent and advertising executives on 16 per cent.

Clergy are in the middle of the table on the same level as television newsreaders and the ordinary man or woman in the street.

Addressing the findings on Premier’s News Hour, Rev Michael John from Holy Trinity, Clapham in south London said: “Less and less people are attending church.

“They are having less and less exposure to clergy and church leaders. Maybe that’s got something to do with it – but actually if you don’t know, if you don’t have a relationship with someone who is a member of the clergy, that’s going to affect the trust you have of them.”

He said trust would be improved if people spent more time with clergy.

“I think a classic example would be something like Alpha. You build trust with people over the week and after five or six weeks, you can invite them to church where they will be more open to hearing what you have to say.”

The Christian couple that own White magazine made the claim in a blog post where they explained that the publication is no longer “economically viable”.

Luke and Carla Burrell, who started the magazine twelve years ago continued: “Last year the Australian law was changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. Since then we have been asked repeatedly why our magazine had not yet featured all couples.

“White Magazine has always been a secular publication, but as its publishers, we are Christian. We have no agenda but to love. We have no desire to create a social, political or legal war, which only divides people further and does more damage than good. To us, our faith is anchored in love without judgement.”

The Burrells said they had received a “flood of judgement” while some have “blindly demanded that we pick a side”.

“The result has been that a number of advertisers withdrew their sponsorship out of fear of being judged, or in protest,” the couple said.

The blog post divided opinion with some comments reflecting the judgement the couple said they had received.

Four Key Attitudes That Are Killing Church Attendance

There has been much written on declining attendance in churches. Specifically, many of us have addressed the issue of attendance frequency where even “active” church members attend less frequently.

Many pundits have rightly observed the impact of culture on the church, where church is, at best, just another activity. We have also addressed the issue of increasing choices. Many church members and attendees have so many opportunities to do other activities, and they can often afford them like never before. Still others note the increasing numbers of people working on Sunday, precluding them from attending worship services that day. Even more lament the reality that many children’s sports have been moved to Sundays.

These reasons are sound. But behind many of these reasons are attitudinal issues. These attitudinal issues are really the sources of the problem. And there are four attitudes in particular that have a devastating effect on church attendance.

  1. The attitude that church membership is not biblical. One commenter on this blog challenged me: “Show me where church membership is in the Bible.” I asked her to check 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul said clearly, we are members of the body of Christ. He wrote that letter to a local church in a local community. You might argue that many churches have adapted cultural forms of church membership, where it looks more like a country club membership or a civic club membership. Probably so. But don’t take those biblical deviations to be an excuse…

Why doesn’t Disney World celebrate Thanksgiving?

NOTE: I would like to begin this morning by expressing my gratitude to my son, Ryan, for writing last week’s Daily Articles. I am truly thankful for his thoughtful and inspiring columns while Janet and I were on vacation. Ryan is completing his PhD in church history and is a gifted thinker and writer. I am very proud of him and honored to share this ministry with him.

My wife marked a significant birthday last week. I offered to take her anywhere to celebrate and she chose Disney World. Since she grew up just a few blocks from Disneyland in California and we visited Disney World often while living in Atlanta, the trip was a nostalgic and fun week for us both.

However, one part of our vacation was a new experience: we had never visited Disney World in mid-November. We saw Christmas decorations everywhere we looked. Wreaths on the doors, garlands on the light poles and attractions, Christmas parades in the streets. We were told that more than 1,500 Christmas trees were placed on the various Disney World properties.

The decorations were beautiful. The parades, light shows, and fireworks were stunning. Disney World celebrates Christmas in grand style.

But another holiday was noteworthy for its absence.

A holiday or a holy day?

I don’t remember a single reference to Thanksgiving. Not one pilgrim or turkey on the grounds. It was as though this Thursday’s celebration of gratitude does not exist.

My purpose is not to criticize Disney World–it is to note that for most Americans, they’re right. Thanksgiving is a day for food and football followed by Black Friday sales on Thursday.

By contrast, when Governor Bradford issued his first Thanksgiving proclamation in 1623, he called “all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones” to assemble from nine to noon “to listen to ye pastor and render thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all His blessings.”

When the righteous cry [for help], the Lord hears and rescues them from all their distress and troubles. The Lord is near to the heartbroken and He saves those who are crushed in spirit (contrite in heart, truly sorry for their sin). — Psalm 34:17-18 (AMP)

Heaven is the abode of God, the angels, and the souls of those who are granted salvation.

Heaven, the eternal home of the believer in Jesus Christ, is described in the Bible as not only totally peaceful, but also stunningly beautiful (see Revelation 21 and 22).

Having faith that this is our destiny delivers us from the fear of death. Death is not an unknown nothingness, but a graduation into better things than what we have experienced on earth.

As Christians, we can truthfully say, “I will live in heaven forever!” Your address will change someday from earth to heaven, but you will never really die.

What a joy to know that we have the hope of a beautiful, peaceful place where there will be no more tears, pain, or dying, and we will live in the actual presence of God.

Prayer Starter: O, Lord, thank You for eternal life through Jesus! When life is difficult, help me to remember that it won’t last forever, but I will one day know the joy of living with You in heaven. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
