John 18:6 “As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”

Text: John 18:5-9

It is evident that it was the power of God that made these six hundred men fall backwards to the ground, but why did it happen when He said, “I am he”?

In this verse, and also in verse eight, the word “he” is italicized. That means that the word “he” was not in the original text but was added by the translators to make the sentence grammatically correct. This serves a useful purpose and is very helpful in most cases. However, the translators put these additions in italics so that we could be aware of what the text literally said.

In this instance, Jesus literally said, “I am.” Since Jesus was God manifest in the flesh, His statement of “I am,” carried just as much weight as when He expressed it to Moses (Ex. 3:14). This is nothing less than the Almighty God releasing His glory through the powerful statement, “I AM.” No wonder these men were knocked to the ground.

This graphically illustrates how Jesus could have easily defended Himself against any size army that would come to take His life. As He said in John 10:18, “No man taketh it (i.e. His life) from me, but I lay it down of myself.”

There are many instances recorded in scripture where people fell to the ground as a result of being in God’s presence. The same thing still happens today. Just as some people faint when they experience fear, when they experience the awesome presence of God, they become weak, and lose strength in their physical body.

In searching for ways to bridge the generation gap, there is no doubt that we, as parents, will have to practice what we preach, by striving more and more to bring our conduct into line with our code of beliefs.

No mother can demand that her daughter abstain from sleeping around when she herself is flirting and on occasion compromising her own moral conduct. No father, who wavers between heavy social drinking and occasional binges to the edge of alcoholism, and who can’t speak a pleasant word in the morning until he has had a cigarette, can yell incessantly at his son to get off marijuana, the route that often leads to hard drugs.

Consistency, constancy, and undeviating diligence to maintain Christian character are a must if the older generation is to command respect, or even a hearing, from the young.

Prayer for the day: Younger eyes see my errant behavior, Lord. Help me to be the right example—one which will draw them to You.

Topic: He Cares for You and Wants to Comfort You [Joyce Meyer Devotional 18 November 2018]

For you have need of patient endurance [to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising], so that when you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised. — Hebrews 10:36 (AMP)

I believe God mourns with us when we suffer a great loss. After all, when Jesus taught us to pray, He told us to call God “Abba,” which is best translated as “Daddy.”

What daddy doesn’t ache when his little boy comes home defeated after striking out at his Little League game? What mother doesn’t feel her own heart break as her little girl comes home from school having been taunted on the playground?

In the overall scheme of things, these are tiny losses and hurts, and the parent knows that. But the pain of seeing your child suffering is piercing nonetheless.

Immediately after teaching the disciples to pray what we know as the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus asked, What man is there of you, if his son asks him for a loaf of bread, will hand him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will hand him a serpent? (Matthew 7:9–10 AMPC).

In other words, because He is our Father, God suffers when we suffer. And while He could change our circumstances in an instant, more often than not, He doesn’t. But when He sees His child suffer, He suffers, too.

When you are feeling loss and sorrow, ask God to hold you in the hollow of His hand, to whisper His comfort and to stroke your head, like a parent fussing over his fevered child. You may or may not feel that comfort, but God’s Word is true, and so is He.

Prayer Starter: Thank You, Father, that You are the God of all comfort and You suffer when I suffer. Please comfort me today. Help me to sense Your loving presence in everything I do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Topic: Look From Where You Are [TREM Devotional 18 November 2018]

“And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” Genesis 13:14, 15 KJV

Abraham and Lot were having some contention over grazing land. Their herdsmen were having quarrels and Abraham came to Lot and said look, let there be no quarrel between us. Look at the land before us and choose. If you take the right I will go to the left. If you choose the left I will go to the right. Lot therefore looked at the fresh and lustre land heading towards Sodom and chose it. He saw it with his natural eyes and it was beautiful. And what Abraham was left with was dry. It was like a desert. It seemed like Abraham had lost everything. It was like there was no hope for him.

You know sometimes God will orchestrate some departure, so that you can see clearly, so that those people can leave you because when they are around you cannot go far. And oftentimes when we don’t understand the move of God in our lives, we get upset. There are some people God will deliberately get out of your life because of what He wants to birth through you. There are people that God will deliberately keep away because he does not want them to be part of your celebration.

When Lot was separated, God said to Abraham, now lift your eyes from where you are. In other, words stop looking at what you are facing. Mourning and crying over what you are facing will not help you. Lift up your eyes and see what is beyond what you are facing. As far as your eyes can see; north, south, east and west shall be given unto you for a possession. God wants to give you blessing without measure. What can you see from where you are?
