Rise up, O God, and defend your cause. Psalm 74:22

One news report called it “the single deadliest day for Christians in decades.” The pair of attacks on Sunday worshipers in April 2017 defies our understanding. We simply don’t have a category to describe bloodshed in a house of worship. But we can find some help from others who know this kind of pain well.

Most of the people of Jerusalem were in exile or had been slain when Asaph wrote Psalm 74. Pouring out his heart’s anguish, he described the destruction of the temple at the hands of ruthless invaders. “Your foes roared in the place where you met with us,” Asaph said (v. 4). “They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name” (v. 7).

Yet the psalmist found a place to stand despite the awful reality—providing encouragement that we can do so too. “But God is my King from long ago,” Asaph resolved. “He brings salvation on the earth” (v. 12). This truth enabled Asaph to praise God’s mighty power even though His salvation seemed absent in the moment. “Have regard for your covenant,” Asaph prayed. “Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name” (vv. 20–21).

When justice and mercy seem absent, God’s love and power are in no way diminished. With Asaph, we can confidently say, “But God is my King.”

Prayer: Lord, with the psalmist we pray for the honor of Your Name. Show Yourself strong and compassionate. Rise up and defend Your cause.

God will defend His Name.

Little did he know that someday his song would find an echo in an even more confusing loss. According to the New Testament, a greater temple of God (John 2:20–21) was nailed to a tree. FIRE SCRIPTURE: Genesis 47:8-10

MEMORY VERSE: “What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.” – Nahum 1:9

The MESSAGE:

Affliction is anything that causes pains, suffering, distress or agony. Beloved, from experience there are three types of affliction: Short-term affliction, Long-term affliction and Lifetime affliction.

A lifetime affliction is the affliction that follows a victim to the grave. It could be from birth. It could be from the womb, or at any stage of a life. Once it comes, it does not end until the victim enters the grave, except hindered by divine intervention.

At the age of 130, Jacob was already an old man, and he died at 147 years. Jacob suffered and he was afflicted but even at 130 years, he was still looking for greener pastures in Egypt. At this age (130 years), he looked older than his age and worse than his father when they were at the same age. Remember that Jacob started in a very hard way. He deceived his brother, Esau, and then ran away to escape the anger and threat of his older brother. As a result, he suffered so much. He could not witness the burial of his parents. At Padan-aram in Laban’s house, he suffered so much before he could marry Leah and Rachel. He endured seven years of hard labour for each of the wives. He had a son he named Ben-oni, which means, “son of sorrow”. His wife Rachel died at child birth, and he lost his beloved son (Joseph) which compounded his affliction. Beloved, Jacob really suffered till his death.

The story was told of a man who suffered greatly while caring for his family. One day on his way to seek loan to attend to his family, he met his untimely death in a fatal accident. This is an example of lifetime affliction. When Jacob appeared to Pharoah and Pharoah saw how he was, looking gaunt and skeletal to be the father of young Joseph, Pharoah had no choice than to ask that question, “How old at thou”? Beloved, there are lifetime barreness, lifetime poverty, lifetime sicknesses and diseases, lifetime loneliness and so on.

These are the works of the enemy, because he knows you are created to be great. A pastor, who is a mathematician by divine intervention had to pass through affliction as an unfulfilled mechanic for years because he lost his mother when he was in primary school. His mother had promised to pay his fees to the university level. But he met Jesus and God helped him by making provision for him to be educated to the tertiary level and today, he is fulfilling destiny. Are you suffering? Arise and pray because it may be caused by a lifetime affliction. Terminate it, deal with all Medianites of affliction in your life. And as you pray, the Lord shall bring an end to every affliction in your life and it shall rise no more.

THE REASON MANY CHRISTIANS QUEUE AT THE HOSPITAL WARD IS BECAUSE OF PRAYERLESSNESS.

Topic: The Deliverance Power of the Almighty [Seeds of Destiny 4 November 2018 Devotional]

Thought For The Day: God knows how to push the devil aside and perform His wonders when the devil thinks he has done his worst.

It is common knowledge that we live in dangerous days where wickedness is escalating at an alarming rate. But the good news is that no matter how wicked the world is, our God is eternally committed to the deliverance of His people.

Sometimes ago, a woman in our Church branch in Onitsha, Nigeria gave a testimony of how she unfortunately went to a quack midwife for the delivery of her baby. In the process of the delivery, the baby was coming out with the hand, so the midwife abandoned her seeing the impending danger. She was moved to several hospitals in that condition but was rejected. On reaching the last hospital which accepted to manage the condition, the baby died. When they attempted bringing out the dead baby, it came out with the mother’s intestine in the hand; the uterus had ruptured, and eventually the woman also died in the process.

She arrived eternity and the Lord told her that she was not qualified to be with Him because of her unfaithfulness. The devil had already surrounded her but the Lord said, ‘I will give you one more chance’, and when she looked back, she saw myself and my wife interceding for her. By the mercy of God, she was snatched from death back to life, and today, she is alive and healthy. God knows how to push the devil aside and perform His wonders when the devil thinks he has done his worst.

Beloved, maybe you are facing battles in life but I declare to you; the devil will never win the battle over your life, in Jesus’ Name. God is stepping in right now.

Remember this: God knows how to push the devil aside and perform His wonders when the devil thinks he has done his worst.

Assignments:
1. Believe that you are not waste-able by the devil and make demands on God to deliver you from every trap of the enemy.
2. Ask God for more manifestations of His Deliverance Power in the Body of Christ.

Key Verse: “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men” (Acts 24:16)

MESSAGE:

According to D.L. Moody, “Christianity is not responsible for the deception that exists among professing disciples. You might just as reasonably hold the Cunard Ship Company for the suicide of a passenger who jumps overboard one of their vessels at sea. Had the person remained on the vessel, he would have been safe; and had the disciple remained true to his principles, he would never have turned out a hypocrite”.

In the given text, Apostle Paul stoutly defended his faith before Felix. He explained that he was being persecuted for the worship of God and the hope of the resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. His Christian belief, made him to have a conscience void of offense toward God and man. Though a prisoner, Paul never failed to preach the gospel. As he reasoned of righteousness, temperance and judgment to come, Felix trembled at the message but never repented. Instead, he wanted gratifications in order to loose Paul from his bonds.

Truthfulness is a virtue admired by God and man. When someone learns to be sincere in speech and deeds like Paul, he will experience unique freedom that comes from knowing the truth. Although our inward part is invisible to the mortal eye, it is naked before God. No wonder a lie is more painful when concealed; it boils within and gnaws the conscience. Paul could have varied his witness because of the enormous pressure he faced, but not him. He turned the platform as an occasion to preach the gospel.

To have a heart void of offence, first, you must be saved.Then, pray for a purified heart through the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus.

You may be thinking, Can a few people like us actually change the whole nation?

Let me ask you this: Can one demonic person change a nation for the worse? Definitely. Hitler did it in Germany, didn’t he?

Then if the devil’s power resting on a man can change a nation for the worse, you can be sure that a group of men and women with God’s power resting on them can change a nation for the better.

No nation is so far gone that God can’t change it. Israel proved that. Why, even when it didn’t exist, the devil couldn’t destroy it. God raised it back up before his very eyes.

I want you to notice something in that scripture. It says, “If my people, which are called by my name….” God didn’t say it would take everyone in the nation to get things turned around. He said, “If my people….”

Notice also that He didn’t say, “If My people will get out there and sign petitions and drum up a majority vote….” He said, “Pray.” In other words, we’re going to have to quit trying to work this thing out by ourselves. God Himself will do the healing in this land. Our job is to pray, to believe and to seek His face. Seek Him today.

John 17:23 “I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.“

God loves us the same as He loves Jesus. A true revelation of this will quicken our faith and allow us to walk in the fullness of God. God’s love is the key that opens the door to everything that God is. “God is love” (1 Jn. 4:8).

God’s love is not one dimensional. There is width, length, depth and height to it, which can only be comprehended through the revelation and knowledge of the Holy Spirit. Those who only have a superficial knowledge of God’s love are like a person who looks at a one dimensional picture of the real thing.

In Ephesians 3:19, Paul prays for us to know the love of God which passes knowledge. How can we know the love of God if it passes knowledge? This sounds like a contradiction. The Greek word that is translated “know” in this verse is GINOSKO, which is a verb expressing experiential knowledge. The Greek word that is translated “knowledge” is GNOSIS, which is a noun denoting the act of knowledge. Simply, Paul is praying that we will experience the love of God which passes mere knowledge of it.

Since a true revelation of God’s love makes us full with the fullness of God, then a lack of being full of God must mean that we lack understanding and experience of God’s love. The end result of having understanding and experiential knowledge of God’s love is that we will be filled with all the fullness of God.

We started out bad, being born with evil natures. . . . But God is so rich in mercy . . . he gave us back our lives again when he raised Christ from the dead . . . — Ephesians 2:3,4 (TLB)

I am reminded of a period when all the agonies that afflict modern minds were felt by another generation, the young people who lived during the first century after Christ. They too sought change, but they directed their efforts at individuals, not at the Roman Empire, not at City Hall. And eventually the whole social and political structure felt their impact. In short, those renewed men and women became filled with a unique dynamic force.

Today this same force is available to all people. Over the centuries it has worked in the lives of millions. I personally have seen thousands of people changed. Jesus called it “a new birth.” The Scripture tells us that you need not continue as you are. You can become a new person. Whatever your hang-up—guilt, anxiety, fear, hatred—God can handle it.

Prayer for the day: I delight in knowing, Lord Jesus, that there is nothing in my life that is incapable of being changed through Your redemptive power.

The topic of today’s devotional may be surprising to you. Indeed, some Christian zealots discredit banqueting, and they tend to glory in not associating themselves with parties. Trying to justify themselves, you will hear some say, “I am not a party person.” Yes, there is no crime in not being a party person; I am not a party person either. However, there are benefits associated with banqueting found in God’s word, and because of these blessings, I attend parties once in a while and get blessed by doing so, because it is in the word of God. I thank God for my wife; even when she is fasting, you will always see her cooking. The word of God has inspired her to continually host banquets, culminating in the birth of an annual outreach programme christened ‘Feast of Esther’! The Lord be praised!

According to today’s memory verse, one of the blessings of banqueting is a cheerful spirit. The children of this world know this secret and they take advantage of the blessing of joy brought on by getting together. Although they mostly misuse the opportunity of merriment, they still get the associated blessing of a cheerful spirit because it is the word of God. In today’s Bible reading, Queen Esther took advantage of the blessings associated with banqueting to fight a war that could otherwise have been lost if fought on the battlefield. Using her privilege as queen, she perfectly hosted the king to a sumptuous dinner party and got his attention for the salvation of her people from annihilation.

The effect of good meals is obvious in the Bible. Good meals have either made or marred people’s destinies. Delicious pottage destroyed the destiny of Esau, while a good meal placed irreversible blessings on Jacob (Genesis 25:29-34, Genesis 27). Also, a good meal prescribed by God Himself delivered the Jews from bondage in Egypt (Exodus 12:5-10). Beloved, when occasion warrants you to hold a banquet, go ahead and do it. You can use Nehemiah 8:10 as a template of what festivities for children of God should look like. This scripture verse says:

“…Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

Are you planning to host a banquet and the devil is putting doubts in your heart? Go ahead with that joyful gathering, and there shall be no problem, rather you will come back with unimaginable testimonies of victories over those who don’t want you to celebrate in Jesus’ Name.
