Diocese of Salisbury becomes first Eco Diocese

Salisbury Cathedral Spire will be lit in green on Saturday night to celebrate the award, which has been given by the Christian environmental group A Rocha UK.

To award the status of an eco diocese, a diocese or parish’s green credentials are looked at in five areas: worship, teaching, buildings, land, community engagement and lifestyle.

Andy Atkins, CEO of A Rocha UK said: “When we launched Eco Church in 2016 we had high hopes and expectations. To have reached this far so quickly is humbling, exciting and such a huge encouragement that so many churches in a diocese are working together to care for God’s earth should be an encouragement to us all”.

The Eco Diocese award is part of the wider Eco Church scheme. To achieve an Eco Diocese Bronze Award, 10% of Salisbury diocese’s 500 local worshipping communities, which are spread across Dorset and Wiltshire, engaged with Eco Church and 5% obtained an Eco Church Award.

In addition, the whole diocese met Eco Church Bronze Award standards for its management of buildings and land. There was also a requirement for ethical investment of diocesan funds and for the inclusion of care for creation in training for ministry.

The Bishop of Salisbury, Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam said: “I am delighted and very encouraged that the Diocese of Salisbury is the first to win this award. As the lead bishop on the environment for the Church of…

What Is Appropriate To Wear In Church? — Karl Vaters

There are some rules for how Christians should dress. And they are a matter of the heart far more than the clothes themselves. As believers, we should not dress immodestly, pridefully, or rebelliously.

7 Steps to Getting (and Keeping) Loyal Volunteers — Facts & Trends

It’s a reality of ministry as persistent as it is disappointing. And as if the 80/20 rule wasn’t bad enough, the 20 percent doesn’t remain constant. Different people “rotate” through serving, so seems that just when you get a volunteer in place and on their feet, they walk away. It can be one of the most frustrating experiences of ministry.

5 Reasons Church Lighting Matters to Older AdultsChuck Lawless

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m now in the older generation at my church. I don’t feel old, though, and I prefer contemporary praise choruses or well-done hymns with a contemporary feel. To be honest, I most think about my age when the lighting is so low in a church that it’s tough for me to see. Here are some reasons the lighting really does matter to older folks:

3 Principles for Pastors Addressing PoliticsBruce Ashford

It’s an age-old question, made more relevant by the insistence of media outlets and political pundits: Should pastors directly address contemporary political issues? Some commentators argue that Christianity offers a moral framework that is directly relevant to policy issues and thus the pastor should speak to…

Religious programme ‘Something Understood’ cut by BBC

Something Understood is an ethical discussion programme on early Sunday mornings and repeated Sunday evenings, exploring religious themes through music and guests from a variety of backgrounds.

Episodes are made by various independent production companies, such as TBI media, 7Digital and Falling Tree productions.

However, the slot will be filled with old episodes from April 2019, with no new ones being made.

The show started in 1995 and is presented by Sir Mark Tully, a BBC journalist, as well as other contributors.

The corporation said it was to do with budget issues, saying: “The BBC continues to face significant financial challenges, and has to save £800 million by 2012; so Radio 4, like the rest of BBC Radio, has to make tough choices.

“We’ve broadcast Something Understood for nearly 24 years, and we know the decision to no longer make this programme will disappoint our audience.

“But we have a full and rich back catalogue of the programme, and we propose to fill the schedule with the best of the archive for the foreseeable future.”

It appears to contradict the intention to produce more religious content next year.

In December 2017, the BBC said: “We also plan for landmark series and programmes to reach wide audiences, with a Year of Beliefs in 2019; diversifying our range of contributors and enhancing portrayal in mainstream programming; improving…

Coffins arrive in church of Egyptian Christians murdered in bus attack

The vehicle was ambushed on their return from St Samuel the Confessor monastery, South of Cairo, after a family baptism for a child.

Seven people were murdered and 20 people were also injured and taken to Magaghah hospital and Sheikh Fadl Hospital. The Interior Ministry says it was the work of Islamic militants.

It’s the second attack on pilgrims near St Samuel the Confessor monastery in two years. The previous attack in May 2017 left 28 people dead.

On Saturday, the coffins of those who died on Friday arrived at the Church of Prince Tadros in the city of Minya, where clergy prayed and conducted the funerals.

Bishop Youssef, the Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States said in a statement: “No one can take away our joy in the Lord. For now, we may shed some tears and grieve for a while in sorrow for the faithful martyrs and confessors and their heart-broken families.

“Tomorrow is a new day, but God will not forget one drop of the blood of His saints. All Egyptian citizens must strive together to condemn these radicals from trying to take our beloved country hostage.”

Four out of five Christians have ‘taken action’ on poverty this year

87% Christians have taken action on poverty in the past year and see it as a core part of discipleship, according to a poll of 2,958 UK adults by research firm Barna Group for the poverty charity Tearfund.

Christians Who Make a Difference, the report released on Friday, looked at the connections between Christian beliefs, practices and priorities in relation to their response to poverty.

The research shows that Christians are more likely to donate to charity, with 73% Christians saying they did and 63% of all other UK adults.

49% believers gave food, clothing, furniture or other resources to someone in need.

Christians were slightly more likely to make consumer lifestyle changes, such as recycling, reducing meat consumption and using a green energy provider, with 39% of Christians saying they did so and 35% all other UK adults.

Among those who regularly attended church (at least once a month), the percentages were even higher.

Those who held a high regard for doing something about poverty also prioritised spiritual practises like reading the Bible and praying. Two-thirds said reading the Bible was essential for growing their faith, compared to half of regular churchgoers who said they didn’t serve people in poverty.

The top five activities that Christians believed help to grow their faith included: praying (57%), being part of a church community (51%), reading the Bible (42%), donating to the poor (42%) and worshipping God through songs (33%).

The study also…

Asia Bibi not allowed to leave Pakistan

Despite her lawyer Saif ul-Malook, saying “A person alleged to have committed blasphemy cannot live in Pakistan”, authorities are taking action to put her on the Exit Control list.

Malook, who successfully won her court appeal, has now fled Pakistan for safety after violent Muslim rioters who had threatened to kill him along with Asia Bibi and other people who supported her.

Fleeing may not be an option for Asia Bibi though, as the government made an agreement on Friday with Islamist protesters to begin the process of stopping her leaving the country.

There has been rioting in the country since her acquittal from accusations of blasphemy on Wednesday.

In 2010, Asia Bibi was accused of blaspheming against the prophet Muhammad. After nearly a decade away from her family and on death row, she was cleared of the accusation this week and told she would not face the death penalty.

This caused unrest throughout Pakistan for those who still believe she insulted Islam, leading to the government striking a deal with rioters to limit her movement.

Also part of the agreement was a promise to not reject a petition to review her acquittal and to release those arrested at the protests.

Supporters have expressed their dismay at this, saying it does not follow legal processes and that the government are bowing to pressure from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, an Islamist…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 3 November 2018 — Get Up and Get Going

Topic: Get Up and Get Going [Joyce Meyer Devotional 3 November 2018]

For we all stumble and sin in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says [never saying the wrong thing], he is a perfect man [fully developed in character, without serious flaws], able to bridle his whole body and rein in his entire nature…. — James 3:2 (AMP)

Even before we are totally awake, Satan is bidding to deceive us and is ready to plant defeating thoughts in our mind. He wants us to be hopeless, faithless, and negative.

He definitely doesn’t want us to be positive when we get up. He wants us to have a bad attitude and be selfish and self-centered, full of hatred, bitterness, resentment, doubt, unbelief, and fear—to be mad at everybody.

But thank God, through Jesus Christ, we have been redeemed from all of those negative patterns. We can resist Satan and trust God’s power in order to live victoriously today.

Prayer Starter: Father, this is the day You have made! Help me to approach it with a positive attitude, full of faith and hope, knowing You have great things in store. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Teens Open Heavens 3 November 2018 – Blasphemy Severs Link

Topic: Blasphemy Severs Link [Teens Open Heavens 3 November 2018]

Memorise: “But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Mark 3:29

Read: Mark 3:48-30 (KJV)

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 36-37, Philemon 1

MESSAGE:

As long as the branch is connected to the vine, what flows in the vine will automatically flow into the branch. If you want the life of God to continue to flow through your veins, do all it takes to stay connected to Him. You will observe that most trees do not produce fruits except through their branches. In other words, when the tree passes nutrient to the branches, it is to nurture it and keep it alive as well as to make it fruitful. There is no way a branch will produce fruits if it is severed from the vine. If you notice that you are becoming dry and no longer feel His presence, check yourself to see if you are still connected to the Vine. If you are a talkative person, you might not be sensitive enough to the Holy Spirit to hear Him when He tells you to stop talking. This could strain your relationship with Him to a point where the link between you and Him becomes broken.

Have you talked carelessly or gossiped to a point of emptiness? Go to the Lord and cry for help in bridling your tongue. Don’t let your tongue destroy what the blood of Jesus has purchased for you.

Prayer Point:

Lord Jesus, please let the link between you and I never be broken. Pray for orphans all over the world to experience God’s love and come to Him.

Hymn 7:

1. I am Thine 0 Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

MFM Daily Devotional 3 November 2018 – Divine Responsibility

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 3 November 2018 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Divine Responsibility

TOPIC: Divine Responsibility (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 3 November 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Jonah 1:1-5

MEMORY VERSE: “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” – Psalms 27:14

The MESSAGE:

Responsibility means having a duty to be in charge of someone or something, so that you take decisions and would be blamed if something goes wrong. Christians have their earthly responsibilities and divine responsibilities. As Christians, we are not expected to fail in any of our responsibilities. Moreover, the physical responsibilities are activities we engage in so as to fulfill the divine responsibility. Therefore we should not lose sight of what our divine responsibility is because it is the reason for being alive. It should be placed above other responsibilities because when the divine responsibility is well attended to, the physical ones will be taken care of.

Some lives are divinely attached to your destiny, and your life is also divinely attached to some people’s destinies. You are divinely responsible to make some people great, and you are divinely made great through the divine responsibility of some other people. Some people might not fulfill their destinies if you fail at yours, and if people who are to be responsible for your greatness allow themselves to be bewitched, then, it may be hard for you to fulfill your destiny as well. Instead of going to Nineveh as directed by the Lord, prophet Jonah boarded a ship to Tarshish; a different direction at the detriment of the people of Nineveh. He moved against God’s desire for the people of Nineveh. In spite of Jonah’s irresponsible behaviour, God, in His mercy, divinely intervened and redirected Prophet Jonah for the safety of the people of Nineveh.

Many people are not as fortunate as the citizens of Nineveh. Their divine helpers have been permanently diverted, and today, they are helpless and hopeless. Some of them have been frustrated that they ended up in an early grave. Beloved, are you divinely responsible? Are you fulfilling your destiny? Are you impacting positively the lives attached to your destiny? Are you receiving help from your divine helpers? Are your helpers responsible enough to make you great? If your answer to any of these is ‘No’, then today is your day. Today’s prayers are meant to give you maximum assistance so as to fulfil your own destiny and become divinely responsible to other destinies. The devil does not want you to get what you deserve and so, he fights people who want to fulfil their destinies with force. You have to pray and ask for the intervention of God. However, thank God for giving you responsibilities and making people responsible to you.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, NOT MAKING EXCUSES.

PROPHETIC WORD:
I release from the throne of grace, the anointing of ease to be responsible to God upon you.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. The power of bewitchment assigned against my destiny, die, in the name of Jesus.
2. Powers assigned to redirect my footsteps against my divine assignment, die, in the name of Jesus.
3. Today, I shall be divinely responsible and good people shall be responsible for me to move me forward, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Spirit of error and mistakes of my father’s house, I am not your candidate, die by fire, in Jesus’ name.
5. Power of irresponsibility operating in my life, die by fire, in Jesus’ name.
6. Power to do good and do the will of God, come upon my life, in the name of Jesus.
7. Anointing of ease, to fulfil my destiny optimally, come upon my life, in the name of Jesus.

Family Happiness Begins with You (Part 4) By Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Family Happiness Begins with You (Part 4) By Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Topic: Family Happiness Begins with You (Part 4)

Dear Reader,

Last week, I taught on how you can fulfill your mutual obligations. This week, I will be teaching on: The Missing Link Between Couples.

Time Investment

Many couples have time for themselves within the first few weeks of marriage and afterwards never do. This becomes even worse when they start having children. This is the reason why many marriages that start off so sweetly fail as couples, who think they know themselves, find out that they really don’t. Investing in spending time with your spouse will help build trust, confidence, peace, knowledge and a better understanding in your relationship. It will help you know each other better. The true nature of man appreciates being noticed because man is a living thing. There is nothing as hurting as when one party is neglected in a marriage.

Many men just see their wives as good cooks, cleaners, mothers of their children and keepers of the home. This is so, because time has not been invested to know who their wives really are. 1 Peter 3:7 admonishes: Likewise, ye husbands dwell with them (wives) according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Every man should invest enough time in knowing his wife. You must spend quality time with your wife so much that you know her taste for things like toiletries, wears, colours and her likes and dislikes. The woman, on the other hand, should invest quality time enough to know her husband’s taste for things too. You must be concerned about his well-being at work, business or career, his success and professional accomplishments.

Usually, while a man craves for respect from his wife first and then others, the woman’s self-worth is in place when she is loved and appreciated, first by her husband and then others.

Secondly, time must be invested on children to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. A child is a gift from God, a blessing to the family and a unique blend of husband and wife (Psalms 127:3). This is why time must be created also for them. This will build love, security and trust. The best environment to raise a child is at home and as parents, God mandates us to fulfill this task. Once you learn to order your priorities aright, you will find that the time invested in meeting their needs will not be in vain. Time invested in your building a solid foundation for that child, that even when he or she leaves home and is in a place where you cannot see him or her physically, the knowledge of what have been taught him or her becomes a guide. Invest regular time with them like play time, homework and assignment time; be available to answer their questions and teach them to seek after the Word of God.

Wife, if your husband is the busy type, use the wisdom of God to get him to create time for the children. Time is a very important thing you should invest on your children, not money. For instance, there was a time when our children would come to me with questions that I felt their father should hear and be the one to answer. I would walk them to his study door and leave them to go in and meet him. Afterwards, they would come back excited and smiling, having had their questions answered. Now they can confidently go to him and when they come into his study, he puts them at ease by asking, “How was school today? What did you do at break-time? Did you eat your school lunch?” This type of intimacy and open communication is very useful for their emotional stability. Finally, time should be invested for your parents, relations and in-laws but this should be done with wisdom.

The following are the things men and women would like to find in a spouse.

What a woman wants in a husband
1. Someone who will spend time with her and talk with her.
2. Someone who will be tender with her.
3. Someone who will be her spiritual leader.
4. Someone who will be a good father to her children.
5. Someone who will be a good provider.

What a man wants in a wife
1. Someone he can have fun with!
2. An interesting and exciting sex partner.
3. A good homemaker, and a good mother to his children
4. A financially responsible partner.
5. A wife who will respect and admire him.

Grace to hear and do these becomes available when you accept Jesus Christ and become born again. If you would like to accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord and be born again, please say this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace in Jesus’ Name! Call or write to share your testimonies with me through [email protected], 07026385437 OR 08141320204.
