Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. – Acts 9:31
There are times when life on this earth is hard and uncomfortable…and even downright painful. When those times come, you deeply need the comfort that only the Holy Spirit can bring.
How do you receive that kind of comfort?
By doing just what the believers in Acts did. By “walking in the fear of the Lord.”
Now, when I talk about “the fear of the Lord,” please understand, I’m not saying you should be afraid of God. He’s your Father! You should be as secure and unafraid when you come before Him as a child who knows he is dearly loved. But you must also have so much respect for Him that whenever He reveals something you need to do, you do it immediately—even if it goes against your natural desires. That’s walking in the fear of the Lord.
Let me show you what I mean. Once, several years ago, I received a very disturbing phone call shortly before I was to preach at one of our meetings. It was painful news about a situation in which one of my children had been wronged. The news of it wounded my heart.
I cried, and in the natural, I wanted to get angry about it, to strike back in some way. But instead, I began praying in other tongues. As I prayed, I was prompted in my spirit to rejoice and praise the Lord.
I certainly didn’t feel like praising. I felt like stomping my foot. But, out of respect to the Lord, I put my feelings aside and obeyed. Next, the Holy Spirit impressed me to read a particular prophecy. As I did, I could tell I was being strengthened.
Then suddenly, I realized I was free. By my obedience, I had opened myself to the comforting power of the Holy Spirit. The anger and pain that had filled me just moments before were gone! They had been replaced by the gentle love and reassurance of the Lord.
No matter how tough or painful a situation you may be facing today, trust and obey the directions of your Father. He will make that same supernatural, Holy Spirit-inspired comfort available to you!

John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;“
Text: John 14:16-17
Remember that Jesus was saying these things to His disciples so that they would not be offended. Jesus is speaking to His disciples about the Holy Spirit, who is the Comforter. The ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is the front line of defense against the devil and his devices of defeat. The phrase, “The God of all comfort” carries the idea of a divine comforter who encourages, refreshes, strengthens, aids, assists, and is an ever present help in the time of need. The ways that God chooses to comfort are not always the same. He may deliver you or remove the cause of the affliction, or He may comfort you with words giving you a hope for the future. He also uses people to share their faith with you by prophesying. He sends fellow-laborers to serve and strengthen you by the ministry of the Word, and uses the body of Christ as a channel to comfort you, using prayer.
The point is that the source of all comfort is God, no matter what channel He chooses to use.
In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God revealed to Paul that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Paul, who had experienced God’s comfort in a way that perhaps no other man has, now reveals how the Lord accomplished this. It was through the power of the Holy Spirit. True Christianity is not the absence of trials, but the strength and comfort of Jesus through the Holy Spirit, that will bring us through to the other side.
Even a strong metal container with a vacuum inside will be crushed just by normal atmospheric pressure. But that same container, with an equal or greater amount of pressure inside, will be just fine. Likewise, an individual who is void of God’s comfort inside will be crushed by the pressures of this life. But a believer who takes advantage of the comfort available to him through the Holy Spirit, can withstand anything. Victory is not dependent on the pressures without, but rather on the comfort within.

So it is that we are saved by faith in Christ and not by the good things we do. — Romans 3:28 (TLB)
Many people still cling to the notion that man is naturally good. We did not get this from the Greeks. Aristotle said, “There is no good in mankind.” We did not get it from Judaism. Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
We did not get it from Christian teachings. The Apostle Paul said, “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We got this illusion, I believe, from the philosophers and psychologists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who taught the false doctrine that man is a helpless victim of his environment.
The Bible says that man is not naturally good. All human experience confirms it. Man is rebellious by nature. This first rebellion in history happened in the Garden of Eden, where the environment was perfect and there was no heredity on which to blame it!
Prayer for the day: Each time I become obsessed by the idea that my deeds are so noble, let me remember the magnanimity of Your perfect life.

Evangelist arrested in Turkey just days after Andrew Brunson release
David Byle, who is a joint US and Canadian citizen, was stopped at Ankara train station and taken to anti-terror police for interrogation.
He was detained overnight but released with an order to leave the country within 15 days.
The evangelist has served in Turkey for 18 years and has been threatened with deportation on a number of occasions due to his mission work.
He’s previously been arrested several times while conducting street evangelism.
While evangelism is legal in Turkey, police accused him of disturbing the peace and insulting Islam.
Following the detention of Andrew Brunson, Byle has been advised to legally contest the deportation order but also to leave within the fifteen days.
Thanking Christians for their prayers, he said: “We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support, not only from believers here in Turkey, but from literally all around the world.
“It means a lot to us and encourages us greatly to know we’re not alone, that we’re a part of such a great family, God’s family.”
Encouraging Christians to keep praying, religious freedom group Middle East Concern said: “Pray that David and his family will continue to be strengthened and encouraged during this ordeal and that David will have the wisdom and guidance to know how to proceed, including in discussions with his co-workers.

New Bishop of Bristol enthroned
Rt Revd Vivienne Faull was enthroned at a service in Bristol Cathedral on Saturday.
Members of congregations from across the city gathered and were joined by bishops from across the country, including Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.
Bishop Viv travelled to the service by boat and was greeted by children from local schools who accompanied her to the Cathedral.
Others attending the service included the Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol, the Lord Mayor of Bristol and the High Sheriffs of Bristol and Wiltshire.
Addressing those gathered, Bishop Viv said: “This is a service filled with celebration and prayer which marks the beginning of my public ministry in this Diocese. I am grateful for the many ecumenical and diocesan representatives who are supporting me in the service and will be assisting in the worship.
“I do look forward with great anticipation to all that lies ahead for the Diocese of Bristol. I have been sustained by the welcome I have received and the assurance of the prayers of so many, and continue to hold the Diocese in my prayers.”
She’ll now officially begin her work across the diocese which covers churches across Bristol, Swindon, North Wiltshire and South Gloucester.
She’ll also take her seat in the House of Lords later this week.

Prayer for Menja community as churches mark World Mission Sunday
This year, the attention is turning to the country of Ethiopia and the community of Menja people.
The Catholic Church for England and Wales is asking their parishes to “help build a future of hope” through praying for the Menja people and giving to Missio, the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission which helps care and support them.
Speaking to Premier, Father Tony, the National Director for England and Wales for Missio explained what the day means for the Church.
“Every parish is encouraged to reflect upon, pray for and offer donations towards the mission of the Church,” he said.
Mission claims the Menja people face social exclusion and that in turn affects the ability to find work and earn an income.
Sr Karlo, who is a missionary for the charity called Little Sisters of Jesus explained: “Everyone looks upon the Menja people as poor, uneducated and socially untouchable.
“We Sisters live among them and proclaim the Gospel by our living. We invite them into our house and welcome them as friends.”
Last year, they raised over £550,000 for the work of Missio.

Pray for North Mesquite Baptist Church

Fast Facts: North Mesquite Baptist Church was planted as “A Million More in ‘54” church, but now faces a transition period which the congregation is embracing. The community is now over 50% Hispanic and soon the property’s deed will be transferred to the Dallas Baptist Association with a view toward replanting a Spanish speaking congregation in the facility. The church is excited over the possibility of seeing this house of worship once again being filled. Pleas pray for wisdom for the Transition Team in the church. Also, please pray for another congregation who meets in the current building as they seek to purchase their own facility. It is necessary that they relocate in order for North Mesquite’s transition and land transaction to be completed.

Priest shortage leads to Mass every other week
Despite Sunday worship taking place at the Catholic Church in Boho in County Fermanagh for more than 1,500 years, a shortage of priests means the congregation now needs to join with the Immaculate Conception Church in nearby Monea.
The problem there is the church is too small for both combinations. The first joint service saw people standing outside.
Parishioners have warned that the move will lead to people drifting away from church.
Over 400 people have signed a petition asking for their weekend Masses to be reinstated.
Defending the changes to the BBC, Monsignor Joseph McGuinness from the Diocese of Clogher, said: “It’s understandable that some people will find this very difficult and there will in some cases be almost a great sense of loss to people that the kinds of celebrations that there were in their churches previously may no longer be possible.
“Given the fewer number of priests, the convenient Mass may not necessarily be in their own parish, it may be within a church elsewhere in the area.
“However, we have to look again at the opportunities that this presents to us to do things in a different way, but in a way that keeps our churches alive as places of praise and worship.”
