Church and Christian charity want more than whistle-to-whistle gambling ad ban

Lord Chadlington, a Conservative peer in the House of Lords, has welcomed Labour’s consultation paper on limiting gambling adverts during sports games in an article for politicshome.com.

He says that gambling advertising has increased by 63% since 2012 and that during the World Cup there was 90 minutes of gambling adverts on TV.

He was responding to Labour’s Tom Watson, who proposed a ‘whistle-to-whistle’ ban policy but Lord Chadlington says the ban should extend to an hour before and after live sporting events as well.

The Church of England’s lead on gambling agreed with this, with the Rt Reverend Alan Smith, Bishop of St Alban’s, telling The Telegraph: “In order to protect vulnerable people, we have to explore legislation as they are not prepared to be responsible.

“It is not just the amount of it but also the style that wills people to bet in a short time on something that will happen in the next few minutes which is particularly problematic for addicts.”

The policy charity Christian Action and Research Education (CARE) added their support of Lord Chadlington’s suggestions.

CARE spokesperson James Mildred said: “Lord Chadlington is absolutely right to call for bold action to tackle the prevalence of gambling advertising.

“The Government cannot ignore the fact his proposals carry cross-party political support, the backing of the Church of England and are also…

Pastors John Piper and Robert Morris on Whether Christians Should Raise Their Hands in Worship

Pastors John Piper and Robert Morris on Whether Christians Should Raise Their Hands in Worship

Pastor John Piper was recently asked on his podcast, Ask Pastor John, about whether or not all people should lift their hands during worship.

A worship leader submitted a question to Piper’s podcast inquiring if everyone in a church congregation should lift their hands during worship, referencing Scripture like 1 Chronicles 16:23-31 and Psalm 95:1-2 which speak of bold praise. He said, “When I read verses like 1 Chronicles 16:23-31 and Psalm 95:1-2 it makes me wonder why not everyone lifts their hands when we sing together at church.” He continued asking if everyone singing joyously out loud together was enough?

Piper responded by telling a story of a chapel service he attended while he was a college professor. He said, “I was sitting beside another faculty member who, during a prayer, simply laid his hands, palms up, on his lap.” Piper said witnessing his fellow faculty member do that made him feel “almost disgust.”

He continued, “I don’t remember what was going on in my soul at that time, but what I feel now is nothing but shame and remorse at such an arrogant and judgmental attitude.”

Five years after this incident, Piper had left teaching to become a pastor and he recalled that he, during an all-night worship and prayer session with twenty to thirty parishioners, found himself lifting his hands up in praise of God.

He…

Too Many Christians, Preachers ‘Enjoy’ Condemning People, Opposite of God’s Attitude

(Photo: Screengrab/YouTube.com)Tim Keller is interviewed by Mike Huckabee about his new book on the prophet Jonah on TBN on Oct. 6, 2018.

Too many preachers and Christians “enjoy” condemning people, Tim Keller said, and that is the exact opposite God’s attitude.

In an interview Saturday on Mike Huckabee’s TBN show about his new book, The Prodigal Prophet: Jonah and the Mystery of God’s Mercy, the esteemed theologian and former pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan explained that important lessons about relating to pagan, non-believing people can be drawn from the life of this particular Old Testament prophet.

Jonah wanted to condemn the people of Nineveh, and he did not like the people to whom God sent him, he explained.

“Jonah went to the city, and preached to the city, but didn’t love the city,” Keller said, when asked what parallel Christians can draw today, given that he ultimately did what God wanted him to do even though he did not want to and was disobedient at first.

“That wasn’t good enough for God because at the very end, He says to Jonah, How can you not love a city with 120,000 people who don’t know their right hand from their left,” he added.

A main lesson from the life of Jonah is that God says that it is not enough to preach the truth without…

British School Teaches 6-Y-O Kids to Write Homosexual ‘Love Letter’ for Same-Sex Marriage Assignment – Urban Christian News

Last month, BBC’s Radio Manchester posted a short video about a lesson that was taught to children at Bewsey Lodge Primary School in Warrington, England.

The video shows the teacher, Sarah Hopson, instructing her class of youngsters to pretend to be a fictional fairytale character named “Prince Henry” and write a love letter to the prince’s servant “Thomas,” telling Thomas why it would be a “brilliant idea” for them to get married.

According to BBC, the school teaches children from an early age about LGBT relationships. The video shows students being taught about same-sex marriage through the writing of a love letter.

“They are going to go out into that world and find this diversity around them and they’ll find that at a young age as well,” Hopson told BBC. “And the more they can be accepting at this age, you are not going to face it further on because the children will be accepting now and will be accepting this diversity around them.”

The primary school, which has about 345 students, prides itself on being LGBT inclusive.

According to BBC, the school has as gender-neutral uniform policy in which students can choose which uniform they want to wear so as not to offend students who might struggle with gender dysphoria and identify as a member of the opposite sex.

Additionally, the school has all age groups take part in lessons about LGBT inclusivity.

Over the summer, Bewsey Lodge became the first school in its region to win the pro-LGBT “Educate and Celebrate” Best Practice Gold Award, which is awarded to schools that tackle “homophobic,…

Church leaders call for trust as bid for fresh Stormont talks considered

They met Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley at Stormont on Monday as she considers kick-starting fresh political talks to try and break an impasse created since the collapse of Stormont institutions early last year.

The religious figures representing the Catholic church and denominations of Protestantism said their meeting had been positive and encouraging.

In a joint statement they said: “Our discussions today came on the back of our meeting with the political parties a week ago, where we discussed our concerns over the impact of the absence of devolved government in Northern Ireland and the importance of relationships and building trust.

“We also impressed upon the Secretary of State those same concerns, as we did last week with the party leaders, and reiterated our willingness and desire to assist and support where we could in the challenges that lie ahead. We also emphasised the imperative to find space for ongoing dialogue.”

Endless rounds of negotiations have failed to engineer restoration of the institutions, with the two main parties – the DUP and Sinn Fein – fundamentally split over issues like Brexit.

Stormont has not sat since early last year after Sinn Fein left the institutions in protest at the DUP’s handling of a botched green energy scheme.

Repeated rounds of negotiations have failed to bring about their resurrection.

Church leaders present were…

Leaders from Three Major Religions Call for “Peace Caravan” to Israel

Leaders from Three Major Religions Call for “Peace Caravan” to Israel

Jewish and Catholic leaders agreed with a plan devised by the secretary-general of the Muslim World League for leaders from the three Abrahamic religions to travel to Jerusalem in what he called a “peace caravan.”

In an interview with Fox News, Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Alissa, said, “They should be Muslim, Christian, and Jewish, and they should visit all the holy sites. They should meet everyone and find common ground, and they should provide fertile ground to find solutions for peace.

Alissa believes the contingents should not represent any particular nation or political ideology. He said, “They will be more influential without a political agenda because they are independent.” He also added that “This visit is not from Saudi Arabia,” his homeland, but rather, “It comes from the Muslim world, the Christian world, and the Jewish world. It has no relevance to any country whatsoever.”

Leaders from all three faiths, meeting at the Conference for Cultural Rapprochement Between the United States and the Muslim World, agreed with Alissa’s vision.

The executive president of the New York Board of Rabbis, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, said the current situation in the region can no longer be ignored and that a new way must be found to bring peace. He said, “Peace can’t be reached by more fighting. Palestinians are not going anywhere, and Israelis are not…

UN Report Says ‘Unprecedented Changes’ Are Needed to Protect Earth From Global Warming – Urban Christian News

A landmark report released Sunday from the world’s top climate change group said “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” are required to ward off the worst impacts of global warming.

The report, released in South Korea by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said that the world’s economies must quickly reduce fossil fuel use while at the same time dramatically increasing use of clean, efficient energy. These transitions must start now and be well underway in the next 20 years.

The goal is to cap global warming at 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, which the group said may prove nearly impossible unless swift action is taken.

Limiting warming to that level would significantly reduce the risk of climate impacts such as water scarcity, flood and drought, extreme heat, tropical cyclones, biodiversity loss, and sea level rise, the report stated.

Global warming, aka climate change, is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal that release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which has warmed the planet to levels that cannot be explained by natural causes.

This report shows the longer we wait, “the more difficult, the more expensive and the more dangerous it will be,” said Bill Hare, a physicist with the nonprofit group Climate Analytics.

World governments requested the report be prepared after the Paris Agreement was adopted in December 2015 to combat climate change. Nations agreed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in order to hold the increase in…

Vatican defends Pope against ‘blasphemous’ cover-up claims

Cardinal Marc Ouellet said Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano’s claims were false and “blasphemous”, and demanded that he repent.

Six weeks after Archbishop Vigano threw the papacy into turmoil over his claims about ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the head of the Vatican’s bishops’ office said there was no evidence in his files backing the archbishop’s claims that Francis annulled any sanctions against McCarrick.

Cardinal Ouellet’s letter was issued a day after Francis authorised a “thorough study” of all Vatican archives into how McCarrick rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church despite allegations he sexually preyed on seminarians and young priests.

The letter, addressed to Archbishop Vigano but identified as an open letter to the faithful, marked an extraordinary and decisive end to the official Vatican silence about the claims.

In it, Cardinal Ouellet both defended the pope and criticised Archbishop Vigano, asserting that the conservative cleric had used the scandal over sexual abuse in the US to score ideological points with Francis’ critics on the Catholic right.

The cardinal said a review of his files showed there were no documents about any sanctions imposed on McCarrick and that it was “false” to suggest Francis had annulled any such measures.

Cardinal Ouellet did acknowledge that McCarrick had been “strongly exhorted” not to travel or appear in public,…

Six Months after Medical Personnel Kill Christian in Pakistan, No Arrests, Brother Says

Six Months after Medical Personnel Kill Christian in Pakistan, No Arrests, Brother Says

LAHOREPakistan, October 8, 2018 (Morning Star News) – More than six months after doctors and hospital staff members killed a Christian at a government hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, none of the suspects has been arrested, the victim’s brother said.

Anil Saleem, brother of Sunil Saleem, told Morning Star News that police efforts have been lax in the Catholic family’s quest for justice for the father of four, beaten by doctors and security guards at Lahore’s Services Hospital on March 26 after objecting to a doctor’s refusal to tend to his sister as she suffered labor pains.

Police registered a case against 14 doctors, 20 security guards and 10 male nurses but none has been arrested, he said.

“Moreover, the police exonerated the main accused, Dr. Saira, in the initial investigation, even though she was the one who had instigated her colleagues and the security guards to attack us in the hospital ward,” Anil Saleem said.

Though police rejected a counter-case filed against the family by the hospital’s administrator, officials have been reluctant to move against the medical personnel due to threats by the Young Doctors Association (YDA) to launch protests in hospitals across the province and leave their duties as part of a boycott, he said.

“We think that the police were told by the provincial government not…
