Why is Mr. Rogers back in the news?

The news is filled with unlikely stories this morning.

Two years ago, who would have imagined that Donald Trump would be addressing tomorrow’s United Nations General Assembly as US president? Bill Cosby was once a cultural icon; now he faces years in prison as his sentencing hearing starts today. A year ago, Tiger Woods couldn’t sit or walk because of back pain; his victory yesterday is being called “the greatest comeback story in sports history.”

And Mr. Rogers is back in the news.

Google honored Fred Rogers on the homepage of its search engine last Friday to celebrate the filming of his first episode on September 21, 1967.

I encourage you to watch the short video. You’ll learn that Mr. Rogers often named his characters for real people in his life (Queen Sara was named after his wife, for instance). His mother hand-knit all the cardigans he wore on his show, including a red sweater that is now at the Smithsonian. And the stoplight at the opening of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood always blinked yellow to remind kids and parents to slow down a little.

Fred Rogers was not the only television personality to begin a show fifty years ago. Hawaii Five-O, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, and The Mod Squad would qualify as well. But Google chose to honor Mr. Rogers instead.

What does Fred Rogers’ abiding popularity say about our troubled times?

“I like you just the way you are”

Fred Rogers’ message was simple: “I like you just the way you are.” We are starved for such unconditional affirmation because we find it so seldom in this world.

The root of our problem is not just that others condemn us for our failures. It is that we condemn ourselves for our failures.

When others criticize us, their attacks are hurtful, of course. But no one knows us as we know ourselves. No one knows our failures like we do.

No matter how much we succeed in life, no matter how much we do and own, no matter how much popularity we amass, it’s never enough. When…

Scottish Labour leader condemns party official’s anti-Catholic remark

Andy Kerr, chairman of Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee, was speaking from the stage and invited a question from a female delegate.

He then appeared to mock her for crossing herself, saying: “Did you cross yourself, there? In that case, I might not.”

Asked if it was “bigoted”, Mr Leonard told BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme: “That might be one way of describing it.”

The Scottish Labour leader said: “There is absolutely no room inside the Labour Party for that kind of remark, whether it’s meant as a form of humour or not.

“It’s completely unacceptable and Andy Kerr has unreservedly apologised for the remark that he made.”

He added: “There should be no space for it inside the Labour Party and I condemn it.”

Dominic Lipinski/PA Wire

Former Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Tricia Marwick had called on Mr Leonard to take action.

She tweeted him: “Maybe it is about time you united people regardless of religion, creed or colour.

“The sectarian remarks today against Catholics by your chair Andy Kerr in an open session of your conference were disgraceful.

“What are you going to do about that?”

Questioned on his comment, Mr Kerr, a deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: “I apologise unreservedly.

“I was trying to be lighthearted but what I said was ill-judged and wrong.”

Priest who torched rainbow flag removed from post

Fr Paul Kalchik has been forced to step down for the time being from Resurrection Catholic Church in the Avondale neighbourhood of Chicago, following the incident on 14th September.

In a letter to parishioners, Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said: “It has become clear to me that Fr Kalchik must take time away from the parish to receive pastoral support so his needs can be assessed.”

According to local newspaper the Chicago Sun Times, Fr Kalchik has claimed he suffered abuse at the hands of a priest as a young man and considered church sex abuse as a “gay thing”.

Fr Kalchik torched the banner, which he found kept in storage at Resurrection Church, during a private service – despite a warning from Cardinal Cupich against such a move.

The 56 year old had advertised the event in a church news bulletin two weeks beforehand.

The Chicago Sun Times reported sources who claimed Kalchik and his family had received death threats since he burned the flag.

CC Ludovic Bertron

Meanwhile, a protest staged outside Resurrection Church last Wednesday was led by Democrat politician and Chicago City Council member Deb Mell.

Responding on Twitter to Fr Kalchik’s removal, she wrote on Twitter: “Thank you to Cardinal Cupich for taking swift action and listening to the concerns of our community tonight by removing Fr. Paul.”

In his letter, Cardinal…

Why I Have Hope for More Than 100,000 Churches in North America

The baby arrived!

The baby is my book, Scrappy Church. And I am excited about this book. I am very excited about this book. I am very, very excited about this book.

Did I mention I am excited about this book?

The Profound Hope

Sure, I love it when a new book arrives. But this one is really not about me. It was not about perspectives from my supposed expert lens.

It is a report on hope. It is a report from the trenches of spiritual warfare. It is a report of churches that are really revitalizing. Against all human odds. Defying all conventional wisdom. Demonstrating that God is not done with them.

Hope.

I have taken real stories and real research of real churches that are in a new mode of revitalization. I share their stories. More powerfully, I share God’s stories and the hope God gives.

The Scrappy Factor

I call them “scrappy churches.” They have leaders and members who are tenacious, who refuse to give up, who have long-term perspectives, who are willing to take two steps backward and three steps forward.

These churches are turning around. They are revitalizing. They are changing their communities. For the first time in years, maybe decades, these churches have hope.

In all candor, I see the beginning of a movement of profound church revitalization in so many congregations. It’s still in the early stages. It’s still tough. But it’s very real. And if the pattern continues, we could see as many as 100,000 churches move from decline to growth, ineffectiveness to effectiveness,…

Christian TV star Danniella Westbrook reveals cancer diagnosis

The actress and reality TV star, whose battle with substance abuse issues has been highly-publicised over the years, said she does not want to die and that she is determined to get better, but that she took cocaine to cope with the news initially.

Westbrook, 44, said that her thoughts turned to her late friend Jade Goody, who died in 2009 from cervical cancer.

She told the Sunday Mirror: “I’ve always said I am not scared of dying. But when the doctor said, ‘You have cancer’, straight away my thoughts turned to Jade and that I don’t want to die. I know I need to fight.”

Westbrook, who once spoke to Premier about how she became a Christian, said her mother was diagnosed with womb cancer 30 years ago, and that she is “still here” thanks to undergoing treatment on the NHS and that she will follow suit.

She added: “They are taking me in in three weeks for a full hysterectomy. Before they take it out they won’t know to what extent the cancer has grown.”

Westbrook said her doctors believe the cancer is “containable so I’m hopeful”.

Westbrook, who rose to fame in the 1990s playing Samantha Mitchell in EastEnders, said the cancer was diagnosed by a doctor in Spain, where she lives, after weeks of heavy bleeding and being unwell.

She said she was told the cancer is “behind the uterus wall and that’s why it’s not being…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 24 September 2018 — God Will Brighten Your Day

Topic: God Will Brighten Your Day [Joyce Meyer Devotional 24 September 2018]

But certain individuals have missed the mark on this very matter [and] have wandered away into vain arguments and discussions and purposeless talk. 1 Timothy 1:6 (AMPC)

Jesus got up early in the morning, long before daylight, and went out to a deserted place, and prayed—He got alone (see Mark 1:35). There were so many people who followed Jesus everywhere He went that He probably wouldn’t have had any time alone if He hadn’t gotten up really early.

If you aren’t a morning person, the thought of getting up early may make you nervous. But you can decipher for yourself what “early” means for you. Nine o’clock is early if you are used to staying in bed until noon. Even if you only get up 15 minutes earlier than usual to have some time alone with God, you will still honor Him, and that time with Him will make your whole day brighter.

Prayer Starter: Father, I need Your strength to have success today. Help me to make a habit of spending time with You and keeping You first in my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Trust and Obey By David Ibiyeomie

Trust and Obey By David Ibiyeomie

Topic: Trust And Obey

Never doubt God! People trust men more than God; they look up to men more than they look up to God. God says what He means and means what He says.

Numbers 23:19 – God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

If God is telling you to do something, do it cheerfully, without murmuring and do it promptly because delayed obedience is still disobedience. Anytime God gives you an instruction, it means He is set to bless you, just obey and do it. Some Christians have no devil worrying them; do not allow disobedience, lack of faith and trust in God to stop your blessings.

Hebrews 11:6 – But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Your lack of blessing may be as a result of an instruction you ignored or as a result of something you stopped doing. Consistent and continuous obedience bring continuous flow of blessings.

Stop asking God questions and just obey any instruction you receive from God. When God wants to do something He does it beyond human capability and comprehension. There was need for wine in the wedding at Cana of Galilee. When Jesus was informed, He asked His disciples to fetch water according to John 2:3-9. It was their obedience to Jesus’ instruction that birthed the miracle.. Always follow God’s instruction and you will receive your blessings.

John 2:5 – His mother saith unto the servants, whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Anytime you come under financial pressure there was an instruction you ignored. Most times, it is when you want to use the money for something that the instruction will come to test your faith in God.
God’s instructions may seem unrealistic at the moment but obedience to it births miracle.

Therefore, Trust and obey God!

Teens Open Heaven 24 September 2018 – Standing Out

Topic: Standing Out [Teens Open Heaven 24 September 2018]

Memorise: Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Hebrews 1:9

Read: Acts 6:1-8 (KJV)

Bible In One Year: Isaiah 1-3, Galatians 2

MESSAGE:

If you are not prepared to be different, there is no way you can be outstanding. You have to stand out from the crowd. You cannot be in the crowd, remain with the crowd, be like the crowd, do things like them and expect to be outstanding.

To be outstanding doesn’t necessarily imply that you will become the president. It simply means that you excel at everything you do. It means that you are steps ahead of others wherever you find yourself. It means that you constantly put in more work, pay more attention, and follow the rules much more than anyone else. Are you ready to obtain the price of obtaining the best result from every effort?

Prayer Point:

Father, among my peers and in my generation, by our spirit of excellence, let me stand out.

Hymn 11:

1. Stand up! stand up for Jesus,
Ye soldiers of the Cross!
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
The solemn watchword hear;
If while yelling sleep he suffers,
Away with shame and fear.
Where’re yeah meet with evil,
Within you or without,
Charge for the God of battles,
And put the foe to rout.

3. Stand up! stand up for Jesus !
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of Ilesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armour,
And watching unto prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.

4. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor’s song.
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of glory
Shall reign eternally.

MFM Daily Devotional 24 September 2018 – When the Lord’s Servant goes Fishing

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 24 September 2018 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – When the Lord’s Servant goes Fishing

TOPIC: When the Lord’s Servant goes Fishing (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 24 September 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 21:2-3

MEMORY VERSE: “…And Jesus said unto Simon “Fear not from henceforth thou shalt catch men.” Luke 5:10b

The MESSAGE:

Some satanic teachings are currently flying about that a believer cannot backside. These are teachings that have no basis from the Scriptures. In today’s Fire Scripture, some disciples took few steps backward from the faith they had professed. They abandoned the Great Commission for their former ways. They took the backward step of giving up being fishers of men for being mere fishermen. Here, we see the Lord’s servants who ate and drank with Him and who learnt from Him going “a fishing”. The Lord’s servant going “a fishing” here means that a child or a servant of the Lord experienced some discouragement and decides to go back from the service of the Lord to the service of self-aggrandisement. When the servant of the Lord goes a-fishing, he signs in for the omission of favour to fruitless labour. When a servant of the Lord goes a-fishing, he works like an elephant and eats like an ant. When a servant of the Lord goes a-fishing, he toils all night without catching anything. Going a-fishing is a life of backsliding or backwardness. It is a pure emptiness.

In Luke 5:5-10, the Lord Jesus Christ transformed Peter, Andrew, James and John from catching fish to catching men for God. Before this time, they had toiled all night without a catch, but their meeting with Jesus turned their lives around; they made a great catch and followed Jesus. However, in John 21:2-3, Peter and the other disciples went back to fishing; they toiled all night without catching anything –what a fruitless effort! They left their proper place of allocation and went back to the sea of alienation, despondence and disappointment. Catching fish was not the main divine purpose for Peter, John and other disciples that accompanied them but the Great Commission. That was why they experienced unbearable loss of time, sleep and purpose on the sea. They spent all these resources without getting anything in return, but they caught multitude of fishes as they followed Jesus’ instruction.

Many of the Lord’s servants are still toiling in the high sea and wandering in the market square of life with hard labour and nothing for their efforts. Your own case must not be like that. You must discover your divine purpose in life, else you will be wasting your destiny fishing all night without a catch. May the good Lord guide you through His Holy Spirit to heed the Great Commission and fish for the kingdom of God, in Jesus’ name.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
YOUR DIVINE LOCATION WILL GUARANTEE YOUR DIVINE ALLOCATION.

PROPHETIC WORD:
In the remaining days of this year, you shall experience divine acceleration in every area of your life.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. O Lord my Father, give me my divine allocation, in the name of Jesus.
2. Any power keeping me fishing in the sea of alienation and hopelessness, die, in the name of Jesus.
3. Every spirit of ignorance keeping me outside my divine purpose, die, in Jesus’ name.

EVENING
4. Jesus Christ, the story changer, change my story to glory, in the name of Jesus.
5. Tonight O Lord, show me my proper place of divine allocation, in the name of Jesus.
6. O God arise and deliver me from every spiritual diversion, in Jesus’ name.
7. O God my Father, set my feet in the right location, in the name of Jesus.

Our Daily Bread 24 September 2018 Devotional – Walking God’s Way

Topic: Walking God’s Way [Our Daily Bread 24 September 2018 Devotional]

Read: Isaiah 30:15–21, Bible in a Year: Song of Solomon 4–5; Galatians 3

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it. Isaiah 30:21

“We’re going this way,” I said as I touched my son’s shoulder and redirected him through the crowd to follow his mom and sisters in front of us. I’d done this more often as the day wore on at the amusement park our family was visiting. He was getting tired and more easily distracted. Why can’t he just follow them? I wondered.

Then it hit me: How often do I do exactly the same thing? How often do I veer from obediently walking with God, enchanted by the temptations to pursue what I want instead of seeking His ways?

Think of Isaiah’s words from God for Israel: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’ ” (Isaiah 30:21). Earlier in that chapter, God had rebuked His people for their rebelliousness. But if they would trust His strength instead of their own ways (v. 15), He promised to show His graciousness and compassion (v. 18).

One expression of God’s graciousness is His promise to guide us by His Spirit. That happens as we talk to Him about our desires and ask in prayer what He has for us. I’m thankful God patiently directs us, day-by-day, step-by-step, as we trust Him and listen for His voice.

Prayer: Father, You’ve promised to guide us through the ups and downs and decisions we face in life. Help us to trust and follow You, and to actively listen for Your guiding voice.

God patiently directs us as we trust Him and listen for His voice.
