Matthew 21:28-30 “But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.“

Text: Matthew 21:23-24; Mark 11:27-33; 12:1-2; Luke 20:1-9

This parable was given in response to the religious leaders rejecting Jesus’ authority. Through this parable, Jesus reveals God’s rejection of the Jews in response to their rejection of His Son. Jesus is showing that those who do the will of God are actually the ones invested with God’s authority.

These leaders had a form of godliness like this second son, but they were not doing the will of God. The publicans and harlots had no form of godliness, but when confronted with the preaching of John, many of them repented and began to do the will of God like the first son in the story.

These religious Jews, who sat in the seat of Moses, disqualified themselves from being God’s representatives here on earth, because of their hypocrisy and hard hearts. Even the publicans and harlots, who repented at John’s preaching, were ahead of them. There is no sin more frequent among religious people than that of self-righteousness; that is to honor the Lord with the mouth when the heart is far from Him.

These sinners were entering the kingdom of God ahead of the very religious Jews because they knew they were sinners and they put their faith in a Savior. One of the deadliest things about religious self-righteousness is the deception that we will be saved because of our good deeds. We cannot save ourselves regardless of how good we act. Who wants to be the best sinner that ever was sent to Hell?

One of the great needs in the church today is for every Christian to become enthusiastic about his faith in Jesus Christ. This is the essence of vital spiritual experience. The apostles had been with Christ, and they could not help but testify to that which they had seen and heard. Every Christian should become an ambassador of Christ with the splendid abandon of Francis of Assisi. Every Christian should be so intoxicated with Christ and so filled with holy fervor that nothing could ever quench his ardor. The Gospel that Paul preached seemed madness to the world of his day. Let us have this madness! Let us capture some of the magnificent obsession that these early Christians had! Let us go forth as men and women filled with the Spirit of God!

Prayer for the day: Create in me, Lord, the abandonment to reach out unreservedly with the message of Your love.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. – 1 Timothy 2:1-2

We are commanded to pray for our country and our leaders. But having prayed, God expects us to act. The elections in the United States are vital to the future of this nation. Our country is in the midst of a spiritual outpouring, and it’s vitally important that the right people be elected. We must see to it.

Don’t wait until election time is upon us before you start seeking God for whom to vote. Begin to pray now so that the news media and other voices from every corner cannot influence you and cannot draw you in a direction away from the Spirit of God. Pray so that you won’t be influenced by natural reactions and natural responses to cleverly designed commercials and ideas.

Start praying now about the coming elections. Whether they are small local elections or major national elections, make them a part of every prayer you pray. Then thank the Spirit of God for His wisdom concerning for whom to vote. Thank Him for giving you His wisdom about what to say and when to say it to others. Thank Him for giving you wisdom to declare the Name of Jesus and declare that this shall be a God-indwelt, God-ordained, God-overseen administration.

So register. Pray. Vote. Then stand up and be counted by the power of the living God.

MESSAGE:

A song writer once wrote:
“Oh Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the works thy hands hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power thro’ out the universe displayed”.

Today’s text dwells on the praise of God’s wonder through His creation. We read that God’s creation is filled with astonishing varieties of things above and beneath. The psalmist acknowledged God’s infinite wisdom in the way He created both living and non living things which are serviceable to man. God preserves, governs and maintains His creatures. Carefully admiring all these wonders of creation, the psalmist declared that he would praise God as long as he lived. What about you? Have you ever paused to ponder on the massive, glowing galaxy under which every creature exists? what power is holding it from falling? the air you breathe? the uniqueness of each creature and so on? Doing this will enable you live a life of appreciation to God.

There are, however, people who doubt the existence of God and think they do not need Him. This kind of depravity is referred to as foolishness (Psalm 14:1). Do not allow any circumstance of life to make you doubt the existence of God. Those who do so will perish, except they repent and trust in Christ’s sacrifice for their salvation. Like the psalmist, we should dwell much on praising God as long as we live, knowing that we have our being from Him and depend on Him for survival.

Topic: No Evil Plan Will Harm You [TREM 16 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment, thou shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord”. – Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)

Today’s scripture reminds me of the story of Esther and Mordecai in the Bible. Read the story and it will amaze you the reasons for which people make enemies, and consequently seek to harm them, regardless of the validity of the reasons. Mordecai as one of the servants at the king’s gate, refused to bow to or reverence Haman, unlike his colleagues. This made Haman very furious (Esther 3:1-5).

Now the question is, why would Mordecai have such a stance, even to defy the king’s orders? Mordecai as a Jew didn’t believe that any man was worthy of such honour but God. That was why he didn’t bow to Haman. Beloved, you must know who you are. Heaven will only back you when you function in the authority of your identity.

In His wrath, Haman plotted to destroy not just Mordecai, but all the Jews. That’s why I love God, He knows how to turn the plot of the adversary on its head. The same Haman who wanted to destroy Mordecai was instructed to give him a state honour. I declare that in the same place where they plotted your downfall, God will turn it around for your honour. Their job is to gather, but for your sake, they are scattered in Jesus’ name.

Beloved, your life is hid in Christ, and Christ in God. Therefore, no evil shall befall you. Jesus sacrificed His life for your sake. You have been redeemed by His precious blood. You are therefore too expensive for the enemy to destroy. God will flex His muscles for you. I declare that evil will bow before you, and the wicked will bow at your gate. You are blessed!

Topic: The Right Way to Pray [Our Daily Bread 16 September 2018 Devotional]

Read: Matthew 6:5–15, Bible in a Year: Proverbs 25–26; 2 Corinthians 9

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Matthew 6:6

I admire people who record prayer requests in journals tattered from daily handling, those who keep track of every prayer and praise and then faithfully update their lists. I’m inspired by those who gather with others to pray and whose kneeling wears out the carpet at their bedsides. For years, I tried to copy their styles, to emulate a perfect prayer life, and to imitate the eloquence of the so-much-more-articulate-than-me folks. I strived to unravel what I thought was a mystery, as I longed to learn the right way to pray.

Eventually, I learned that our Lord simply desires prayer that begins and ends with humility (Matthew 6:5). He invites us into an intimate exchange through which He promises to listen (v. 6). He never requires fancy or memorized words or phrases (v. 7). He assures us that prayer is a gift, an opportunity to honor His majesty (vv. 9–10), to display our confidence in His provision (v. 11), and to affirm our security in His forgiveness and guidance (vv. 12–13).

God assures us He hears and cares about every single spoken and unspoken prayer, as well as the prayers that slip down our cheeks as silent tears. As we place our trust in God and His perfect love for us, we can be sure praying with a humble heart that’s surrendered to and dependent on Him is always the right way to pray.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for reminding us You hear every prayer.

Calling on Jesus as our loving Savior and Lord is the right way to pray.
