Report Finds Islamic Extremism Was Responsible for 84,000 Deaths in 2017 – Urban Christian News

Islamic extremism and efforts to combat it are responsible for 84,000 deaths in 2017, according to a new report from an organization founded by former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair.

According to the Global Extremism Monitor by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change released Thursday, at least 84,023 people in 66 countries died because of “violent Islamism” in 2017.

Of the 84,023 deaths, about 48,164 are the deaths of extremists themselves, while just under 22,000 were civilian deaths, 10,337 were security personnel and 3,307 were deaths of non state actors. The identities of 292 people killed could not be confirmed.

The report states that even though there were major military defeats of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, around 120 other “violent Islamist groups are still inspiring and orchestrating attacks around the world.”

The annual monitor tracks violent Islamic extremism from English-language open-source data. For 2017, the organization’s analysts found that there were “27,092 incidents of violent Islamist extremism and state and nonstate efforts to combat it.”

While the data found that there were 7,841 attacks in 48 countries in 2017, at least 47 Islamic extremist groups deliberately “orchestrated fatal campaigns against civilians.” Those attacks, the report says, were “designed to instill fear and erode public morale.”

The report calls out Nigeria’s Boko Haram terrorist organization as being the terror group that most targeted civilians. Seventy-one percent of Boko Haram attacks targeted civilians.

Methodist leader calls on churches to keep worshippers safe from Hurricane Florence

Bishop Jonathan, who is a United Methodist Church minister, said: “I am thankful for pastors and church leaders who are making the difficult decision regarding whether to hold Sunday services, and I trust you all to make the best decision you can to balance the safety of worshipers with the desire to gather in prayer.”

“If you are unable to gather with your church family on Sunday, I urge you to gather with your family – in a shelter, a hotel or wherever you may be – to pray for the people impacted by this storm, for the first responders and early responders who work tirelessly to see to the needs of others, and for the many community and church agencies who will be working with people in the months ahead.

Before Holston current role, he worked as a conference disaster relief coordinator and served on the United Methodist Committee on Relief, on the Catastrophic Disaster Response Team and as the Church World Service disaster consultant in Georgia.

In this statement addressed to South Carolina United Methodists he ended: “Finally, as people of faith, we trust that God’s love will triumph in the midst of anxiety, fear, loss and destruction. We trust that God will lead us to respond faithfully to the needs of our communities in the aftermath of the storm. We give thanks for our shared ministry.”

WW2 veteran and Salvation Army member, 94, skydives for charity

94 year old Harry Read completed his first high level skydive since he parachuted into Normandy on 6th June 1944, D-Day, on Friday. He jumped from 10,000 feet to raise money for The Salvation Army’s Anti Trafficking and Modern Slavery work.

He describes on his giving page how his faith motivated him: “You might well be asking where God comes in on this and I take the question seriously. This started out as a very modest desire for a low-level parachute jump which has, seemingly, been elevated to a high-profile event with the Red Devils team. However, every aspect of this proposal has been bathed in prayer and, when my normal common-sense has asked its questions, I still have the quiet, over-ruling assurance that, our heavenly Father is approving to the degree of being in charge. I don’t know where, or how, this will glorify him but he is telling me to trust him, and I will.”

As a 20-year-old Wireless Operator in World War Two, Harry was part of the Parachute Brigade landing in France on D-Day.

He described how the two jumps were different: “On that morning at 00.50 hours I parachuted into Normandy and 30 seconds later I was on the ground. Christian charity ready to help people effected by Typhoon

Two women have died in a landslide and torrential rain continues. The typhoon made landfall before dawn in the coastal town of Baggao in Cagayan province on the northern tip of Luzon Island. 

More than five million people were at risk from the storm, which the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Centre downgraded from a super typhoon but said was still punching powerful winds and gusts equivalent to a category four Atlantic hurricane.

Mark Bulpitt, Head of Fragile States & Emergency Response at Christian charity World Vision told Premier: “We’re taking this as a very serious typhoon. It’s expected to hit at 200 kilomentres an hour and you compare that to Typhooon Haiyan…which was the strongest ever typhoon to hit the Philippines.”

Mark explained how several people are there, ready to offer aid as soon as it’s safe: “World Vision is in the Philippines and we have been there for 60 years – we have a lot of dedicated staff that have expertise in responding to crises like this. They have worked in 16 crises in the last 5 years alone.

“We’ve already pre-positioned supplies for 4000 families, ready so they can be moved quickly so we can respond immediately to help anyone that needs life-saving equipment.”

“The equipment we have includes things like hygiene kits, blankets mosquito nets so we don’t get secondary issues arising, such as from malaria.”

No-fault divorces planned to reform ‘archaic’ law by justice secretary

The need for couples to separate or allege “fault” would be taken away under a proposed change unveiled by David Gauke.

Spouses would also be stripped of any right to contest a divorce application made by their partner, a consultation launched on Saturday has proposed.

Mr Gauke, who had previously publicly called for a “less antagonistic” system said: “Marriage will always be one of our most sacred institutions, but when a relationship ends it cannot be right for the law to create or increase conflict between divorcing couples.

“That is why we will remove the archaic requirements to allege fault or show evidence of separation, making the process less acrimonious and helping families look to the future.”

Under the current law in England and Wales, unless people can prove there was adultery, unreasonable behaviour or desertion, the only way to obtain a divorce without their spouse’s agreement is to live apart for five years.

The proposed changes include:

– Making “the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage” the sole grounds for a divorce

– Removing the need to live apart or provide evidence of a partner’s misconduct

– A new court notification process that can be triggered by one or both parties

– Removing the opportunity for the other spouse to contest the divorce application

Topic: God’s Food For The Spirit Of Man [Seeds of Destiny 15 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4.

Thought For The Day: The spirit of man thrives on the revelation of God’s Word.

The Scripture makes it abundantly clear that the Word of God has a multi-dimensional ministry. Previously, we saw that the Word of God renews and renovates mentality; we also saw that the Word of God is the fuel and builder of faith.
Now, it is important to know another ministry of the Word of God. The Word is God’s spiritual food for man; God’s Word feeds man’s spirit.

Our anchor Scripture makes it clear that man shall live by the Word that comes from the mouth of God. As good as bread or physical food is, bread alone cannot satisfy or handle all the needs of man. That is why a person may have a plump physique when he eats physical food very well but may be challenged spiritually due to negligence of God’s Word which is the food of the spirit. Many people wear nice clothes and look robust outwardly but their spirit man is sick. So, physical nutrition attends to the body; information attends to the mind but it is the revelation of God’s Word that attends to the spirit of man.

The spirit of man thrives on the revelation of God’s Word. Having a steady diet of the Word of God is key to building a healthy spirit.

My counsel is, eat normal food properly and at the right time in order to build your immune system and protect your body against disease. Also, feed on God’s Word in order to have a solid spirit that can fight any demonic attack and spiritual infection.

Remember this: The spirit of man thrives on the revelation of God’s Word.

Assignments:
1. Make up your mind to feed on adequate physical and balanced diet; avoid being malnourished.
2. Decide to also feed on God’s Word for the constant nourishment of your spirit.

Prayer: O Lord, I receive the grace to feed on Your Word constantly in Jesus’ Name.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 17:11-19 (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 16 September 2018)

11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

Ingratitude negates the will of God (1 Thess. 5:18). It is a sign of backsliding. Though people are ungrateful for various reasons, we must not be ingrates because of its attendant dangers (Romans 1:21-22).

TEXT REVIEW: Luke 17:11-19 – “THE PRIEST AND LEPROSY”
Leviticus 13:1-59 clearly spells out details of how to declare a person as leprous. It explains the stages of leprosy while the immediate treatment is to quarantine the fellow for the number of days ranging from 7 days and 14 days and so on. The leper so identified would have to cry “Unclean! Unclean!!” all the days of his leprosy. Leviticus 14:1-57 details out the procedures and sacrifices before the priest could declare the “unclean” person as “clean”. One of the procedures is to offer a male lamb, oil, etc, as sin/trespass offering by the Priest. Leviticus 14:12-13. The priest would atone for the sin of the leper. Other requirements and long procedures are stated. Jesus carried out the 57 verse procedures in one statement “Go, show yourselves unto the Priests”, Luke 17:14, and as they went, they were cleansed. The fearful misdeed of these lepers was that they did not appreciate what was given to them FREELY by a special priest who did not charge them a dime. The same way Jesus saved thousands from sin which would have quarantined them forever, yet, they did not see good reason to return and worship him. Luke 17:16-18. Sin is more grievous than leprosy but our High Priest’s blood has atoned for it and we are “cleaned”. Hebrew 9:11-12. Therefore, we need to be grateful to our High Priest for cleansing our spiritual leprosy. Hebrew 13:12-13.

TEACHING METHOD: Teacher to use question and answers teaching method. VI. TIME MANAGEMENT: Apply two (2) lesson outlines teaching time and avoid distraction.

LESSON OUTLINES
LESSON OUTLINE 1: REASONS FOR INGRATITUDE

(I) Teacher should explain ingratitude as lack or absence of giving thanks. It is un thankfulness or thanklessness. 2 Timothy 3:2.
(ii) Teacher should ask students to identify reasons why some people are unthankful to their benefactors.
(iii)Teacher should give reasons while people show unthankful attitude to God as follows:

(a) Sin occasioned by spiritual blindness. Isaiah 29:16; Romans 1:21-22, 28.
(b) Failure to take account of what God has done. Psalms 103:1-3.
(c) Ignorance, foolishness and slowness of heart. Luke 17:17; 24:25; Deuteronomy 32:6.
(d) Spiritual immaturity and insensitivity. Luke 24:13-16; Psalms 106:7.
(e) Keeping of bad company./ Corinthians 15:33.
(f) Pride, as in the case of Nebuchadnezzar. Dan. 4:22-25, 30-31

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: How can Christians constantly show gratitude to God?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: DANGERS OF INGRATITUDE
(i) Teacher should find out how the students feel when their good deeds were not recognized.
(ii) Teacher should identify and explain the dangers of being ungrateful to God as follows:

(a) The ungrateful person can lose his/her blessing, salvation/heaven. 2 Sam. 6:20-23; Luke 12:16-21.
(b) The ungrateful fellow can attract divine curses. Proverbs 3:33.
(c) He/she stands the risk of blocking personal blessing
(d) The ungrateful cannot access the presence of God. Psalms 100:3.
(e) The knowledge of the unthankful can become reprobate and their hearts become foolish and darkened. Romans 1:21, 28.
(f) They can attract God’s wrath including death. Numbers 14:2-12.
(g) Ingratitude to God could be regarded as an act of wickedness which attracts severe punishment. Psalms 9:17.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: How can we remember God’s goodness always?

SUMMARY: Be grateful to God at all times.

CONCLUSION: Repent and return to God with a heart of thanksgiving. Make thanksgiving a lifestyle.

EVALUATION: What are the dangers of ingratitude?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, let me remember to thank you at all times.

ASSIGNMENT: Find out five (5) persons in the Bible who demonstrated ingratitude. State what they did.
