Why Staff Issues Are Among the Most Painful Church Issues

Podcast Episode #466

Church staffing can be tricky in today’s churches. On this episode we discuss reasons church staffing issues can hurt a church and how to deal with them.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Bad hiring is endemic in churches, and we end up with staff conflict as a result.
  • People who work in the church often gravitate to two extremes: being a workaholic or being a lazy bum.
  • Most church staff issues are the result of some staffers being a poor fit. Those issues tend to work themselves out because people will leave the staff, but not always.
  • Church personnel teams often don’t know about staff issues in the church because they don’t see the staff day to day.

The reasons staff issues can be such a problem are:

  1. Bad hiring practices
  2. Lack of accountability and poor work ethic among some staff
  3. Power groups formed around staff
  4. Inherited staff/pastor
  5. Personnel and similar groups that don’t have full awareness
  6. The Sunday-only personal versus the five-day-a-week persona
  7. Disloyal staff/pastor
  8. Leadership responsibility without authority

Call for mandatory child abuse reporting after cover-up at top Catholic schools

The call in the House of Lords for action came after a report found monks at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and Downside in Somerset hid allegations of “appalling sexual abuse” against pupils as young as seven to protect the church’s reputation.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) also said the abuse spanning four decades was likely to be “considerably” more widespread than previously thought.

It made the claims in a scathing report on the English Benedictine Congregation, which has 10 monasteries in England and Wales.

Ampleforth and Downside are two schools linked to the monasteries, run at times by “secretive, evasive and suspicious” church officials who avoided reporting misconduct to police and social services.

Allegations stretching back to the 1960s encompassed “a wide spectrum of physical abuse, much of which had sadistic and sexual overtones”, according to the report.

Ten individuals linked to the schools, mainly monks, have been cautioned or convicted over sexual activity or pornography offences involving a “large number of children”.

Raising the scandal in the Lords, Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Walmsley said: “Is the Minister aware that the committee had evidence that one of the schools consulted its legal adviser as to whether it was legally obliged to report the abuse that it knew about. Having learned that it was not so obliged, it…

“Tower of Voices” offers stirring 9/11 tribute

The “Tower of Voices” is a Shanksville, Pennsylvania, monument housing forty wind chimes. According to the US National Park Service, the “intent is to create a set of 40 tones that can signify through consonance the serenity and nobility of the site while also through dissonance recalling the event that consecrated the site.”

“The event that consecrated the site” was the crash of United Flight 93 seventeen years ago. The monument is ninety-three feet tall to commemorate the flight number. The forty wind chimes give voice to the forty passengers and crew who died heroically that day.

Park Superintendent Stephen Clark: “Together their voices will ring out into perpetuity.”

“Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst”

I did an internet search for “9/11” and 269 million results appeared this morning. Seventeen years later, it is still difficult to find words appropriate to the horror of that day.

Many years ago, I stood beneath the Twin Towers and marveled at their magnificent height. It never occurred to me that they could be destroyed. In some ways, it still seems surreal–the jets crashing into the Towers and the Pentagon, the flames, the mass destruction. The heroes of Flight 93 who caused the plane to crash before it could attack the terrorists’ target, presumably the White House or Congress.

We cannot prevent all tragedies, of course. But we can prepare for them.

More than one million people face mandatory evacuation orders as Hurricane Florence nears Category 5 strength this morning. “We are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst,” said Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.

Christians need to do the same. It is imperative that we begin praying now for those who are facing this catastrophic storm. And that we look for other ways to demonstrate God’s love in our compassion.

“We had nowhere to look but up”

Henri Nouwen: “The many disasters in our world, and all the tragedies that happen to people each day,…

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 11 September 2018 – The Power of Inner Peace

TOPIC: The Power Of Inner Peace (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries Tuesday, 11 September 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 14:25-27

MEMORY VERSE: “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.John 14:1

The MESSAGE:

One of the best remedies for a troubled heart is prayer. However, if God is going to answer our prayers and give us peace in our hearts, we must trust Him and cast out fear and doubt from our hearts. One of the best ways to ease a troubled heart is to bathe it in love of God. When you feel like an “orphan”, let the Spirit of God reveal God’s love to you in a deeper way. Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers” said, “Little faith will take your soul to heaven, but great faith will bring heaven to your soul”. Your heart can become “heaven on earth” as you commune with the Lord and worship Him.

Shalom (peace) is a precious word to the Jewish people. It means much more than just the absence of war or distress. Shalom means wholeness, completeness, health, and security, even prosperity in the best sense. When you are enjoying God’s peace, there is joy and contentment, but God’s peace is not like the “peace” that the world offers. The world bases its peace on its resources while God’s peace depends on relationship. To be right with God means to enjoy the peace of God. The world depends on personal ability, but the Christian depends on spiritual adequacy in Christ. In the world, peace is something you hope for or work to attain, but to the Christian, peace is God’s precious gift, received by faith. Unsaved people enjoy peace when there is an absence of trouble; Christians enjoy peace in spite of trials because of the presence of the power of the Holy Spirit. People in the world walk by sight and depend on the externals, but Christians walk by faith and depend on the internals. The Spirit of God teaches us the word and guides us (not drags us) into the truth. He also reminds us of what He has taught us so that we can depend on God’s word in the difficult times of life. The Spirit uses the word to give us His peace (John 14:27), His love (John 15:9-10), and His joy (John 15:11). If that does not calm a troubled heart, nothing will.

You have a role to play in getting the peace of God. See your life’s challenges from the eyes and mind of God. See great and shining light at the end of the dark tunnel. See the brighter side of life. Be calm and be still. See the Mighty Man in battle taking over your battles. See the power of God subduing the power of your adversaries. See how big your God is rather than how terrible your problem presents itself. Determine to laugh last over your enemies. Look diligently unto Jesus and you will be victorious, in the mighty name of Jesus.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
UNSAVED PEOPLE ENJOY PEACE WHEN THERE IS AN ABSENCE OF TROUBLE; CHRISTIANS ENJOY PEACE IN SPITE OF TRIALS BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

PROPHETIC WORD:
I decree that the everlasting peace of God shall win you over from the peace of the world.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Peace of God, flow into my life, in the name of Jesus.
2. My soul, enter into the rest and joy of the Lord, in the name of Jesus.
3. Arrows of confusion fired against my spirit man, go back to your senders, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. You spirit of anxiety, I bind and cast you out of my life, in the name of Jesus.
5. Overflowing joy, enter my life by fire, in the name of Jesus.
6. God will make a way for me where the enemy says there is no way, in the name of Jesus.
7. Jesus Christ the Prince of Peace, manifest Your power in my life, in the name of Jesus.

Seeds of Destiny 11 September 2018 – The Key to Healthy Living

Topic: The Key to Healthy Living [Seeds of Destiny 11 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:14-15.

Thought For The Day: The Cross is God’s answer that crushes all sicknesses and afflictions.

In the Book of Numbers Chapter Twenty One, the Bible gives an account of the children of Israel on their way to the Promised Land. In the wilderness, they erred by speaking against God and His servant, Moses. Then God permitted serpents to bite them. When they cried out to Moses, God told Moses to mould a fiery serpent made of brass and set it on a pole so that anyone who looked up at the serpent on the pole after being bitten would be healed from the venom of the biting serpent on the ground.

Now, in the New Testament, Our Master, Jesus tells us in the above scripture that the way the serpent was lifted in the wilderness was the same way He, the son of man would be lifted up. This means, the way the children of Israel were healed when they looked up at the serpent on the pole is the same way we would be healed and delivered when we look up to Jesus who was crucified on the Cross.

This is the key to healthy living!

In practical terms, how does this apply to us today? When you are sick or afflicted, lift up your eyes of faith to the Cross of Calvary where ‘It is finished.’ On the Cross of Calvary, Jesus finished all the works of the devil, including afflictions and diseases. The Cross is God’s answer that crushes all sicknesses and afflictions. So, when you look up to the Cross where sickness and diseases had already been finished by Jesus, you would be healed of every sickness in your body. This understanding is key to terminating every sickness in your body and maintaining a healthy life.

My counsel is, always look up to the Cross of Calvary and you will be made whole.

Remember this: The Cross is God’s answer that crushes all sicknesses and afflictions.

Assignments:
1. Make up your mind to look up at the Cross of Calvary with your eyes of faith.
2. Ask God to heal you of every sickness and affliction in your life.

Prayer: Thank You Lord for perfecting my healing on the Cross of Calvary. I receive my total healing by looking up at the finished work of Christ on the Cross of Calvary, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

DCLM Daily Manna 11 September 2018 – Full Gaze on Him

Topic: Full Gaze On Him [DCLM Daily Manna 11 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

Text: Isaiah 29:1-8 (KJV)

Key Verse: “Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel (Isaiah 29:2).

MESSAGE:

The Lord relates with His people in true holiness and abiding righteousness. Thus, His children must also worship Him in truth and righteousness. The Lord does not compromise His standard: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

The passage for today starts with a decree of woe to Ariel, “the city where David dwelt”. Ariel, in this passage, refers to Jerusalem, a city which had become so mighty in power and splendour. But more specifically, Ariel signifies an altar of sacrifice. In the course of exaltation by the Lord, Jerusalem had become the consecrated city where the altar of sacrifice to the Lord was and where many came to worship. However, Jerusalem became backslidden and all its eventual outward show of religiosity became abominable to the Lord.

Ariel is a representation of the gradual and eventual backsliding of a once fervent child of God. We are clearly warned: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). The Lord will, however, be faithful to as many who honour Him and be an enemy against their enemies.

A true child of God dwells in the secret place of the Most High and abides in His secure and blessed sanctuary. He does not serve or worship God selectively. On the contrary, he is on fire for God all the time. Believers must always wait on the Lord and dwell in His presence at all times. A loss of the vision for the Lord can spell grave repercussions. Therefore, let your hearts be fixed on God and allow nothing to derail your princely pursuit of God.

Thought For The Day: The Lord requires absolute surrender.

Billy Graham 11 September 2018 – Only Jesus

Topic: Only Jesus [Billy Graham Daily Devotional 11 September 2018]

God . . . is the one who invited you into this wonderful friendship with his Son, even Christ our Lord. — 1 Corinthians 1:9 (TLB)

The question remains, “How can God be just—that is, true to Himself in nature and true to Himself in holiness—and yet justify the sinner?” Because each man had to bear his own sins, all mankind was excluded from helping, since each was contaminated with the same disease.

The only solution was for an innocent party to volunteer to die physically and spiritually as a substitution before God. This innocent party would have to take man’s judgment, penalty, and death. But where was such an individual? Certainly, there was none on earth. There was only one possibility. God’s own Son was the only personality in the universe who had the capacity to bear in His own body the sins of the world. Only God’s Son was infinite and thus able to die for all.

Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus, Lamb of God, in adoration I thank You for the love that made You willing to suffer and die on the cross for my sin.

Open Heavens 11 September 2018 – Great God I

Memorise: “Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.”- Psalm 148:13

Read: Job 38:3-12 (KJV)

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 5-8, Mark 6:7-29

Open Heavens 11 September 2018 Tuesday MESSAGE:

A name is not just a label; more importantly, it is an identity. Names are very important to God, and this is why it is important to search the scriptures to discover more about God’s identity through His Names. Those who know his Names and praise Him with these names are dear to God’s heart. In Revelations 1:8, He Himself revealed some of his Name to us saying:

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

Furthermore, in God’s dialogue with Job in Job chapter 38, he asked him some frightening questions which reveal that He truly is the Alpha and the Omega. It goes without saying that He is the one who made the mountains, the oceans and all the other big and small things we see in nature. We also understand that He is older that the oldest because by Him were all things created. He saw the beginning of everything on earth, good and bad, and He will also see their end because He is the Omega. He will end every bad experience in your life as you praise Him today as Alpha and Omega in Jesus’ Name.

In 1 Samuel 1:3, the Almighty is called the Lord of Host. In the past, I used to think this meant that He is the Lord of Hosts’ means the Lord of all hosts, whether in heaven, hell, the earth, the seas, underneath the earth, and even other galaxies in the universe. Nobody can oppress His children because one command from Him can make life unbearable for even the greatest king on earth. If you don’t believe me, ask Pharaoh (Exodus 5-11). According to Proverbs 21:1, my God has the heart of kings in His hands, and He turns their heart wherever He pleases. If He has control over the commanders-in-chief of all armed forces, then He can also direct the armed forces of different nations as He pleases.

Isaiah 9:6 calls Him the Prince of Peace. The first thing a person experiences after giving his o her life to Christ is peace, because the Prince of Peace now lives within. My God can calm every storm, and I mean any storm. He calmed several storms when He was here on earth (Mark 4:39, Matthew 14:24-32), and there is no storm in your life that He cannot calm. Some years ago, I was invited to speak at a United Nations Summit, and I told the delegates there that it was a good that they were all trying to solve the problems of war around the world. I let them know though that if they really wanted peace, the only way they could get it was if they involved the Prince of Peace. In this world of war and turbulence, you can have peace if you surrender to Him indeed. May the peace of the Lord continually be with you in Jesus’ Name.

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
3. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All praise we would render; oh, help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee.

5. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

Its ‘Not Perfect’ but Welcomes All

(Photo: Facebook/United Methodist General Conference)Delegates pray before a plenary session at the United Methodist Church’s 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon.

A United Methodist Church bishop has defended a plan to remove the denomination’s official stance against homosexual acts, claiming that while “not perfect” it welcomes both liberals and conservatives.

Next year, the UMC will hold a special General Conference to determine whether to retain its official opposition to homosexuality and gay marriage.

One proposal, known as the “One Church Plan,” seeks to allow individual congregations and some regional bodies to determine their position on sexual ethics.

Louisiana Area Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, president-designate of the UMC Council of Bishops, released a video on Wednesday, explaining her support for the “One Church Plan.”

Bishop Harvey stated that of the possible plans, the One Church Plan is “the one that’s most faithful to my consecration as a bishop, to guard the faith and the unity of the church. Not the uniformity of the church, but the unity of the church.”

Harvey went on to note her own experiences of being excluded when growing up, due to things like being a woman, Latino, and coming from a rough neighborhood.

Trans Puppet Videos Teach Kids: ‘Millions and Millions’ of Children Are Transgender

Trans Puppet Videos Teach Kids: ‘Millions and Millions’ of Children Are Transgender

A Canadian-based organization released a series of YouTube videos Sept. 5 that use puppets to teach children that gender identity confusion and transgenderism is normal.

The three short videos target children by using a lively puppet named Julien, who says his name once was Julia. The videos show Julien’s transition from a girl to a boy and include skits about the puppet getting a haircut, wearing new clothes, and playing with new gender-specific toys.

“Hello. My name is Julien,” the puppet says in an introductory video. “When I was little, people called me Julia and thought I was a little girl. But in my heart, I felt like I was a little boy. If you want to get to know my world, friends and wonderful story, click on this link.”

The link takes viewers to other videos – available in English and French – that show Julien’s transition.

“I feel sad,” he says in the first video when he is a girl.

“Really? Why do you feel so sad?” Julien’s friend asks.

“I need people to stop calling me Julia.”

“Alright. What do you want them to call you?”

“Julien,” the puppet responds. “I’m not a little girl. I’ve never felt like a girl. Everyone thinks I’m a little girl. … I don’t want to wear dresses or girls’ clothes anymore.”

Julien’s friend then tells him that she’ll be his friend and go to…
