Christian university considering dropping Nike sponsorship after controversial ad

The sports company announced last week that American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick is the face of a new campaign which celebrates the 30 year anniversary of the company’s‘ Just Do It’ slogan.

 

Im 2016, Kaepernick became  one of the first NFL players to kneel during the national anthem to protest against racial injustice and police brutality.

His actions have drawn support with other players following suit, but also caused criticism from people who believe it’s disrespectful not to stand for the national anthem. 

 

The new Nike deal with Kaepernick has also brought about a mixed reaction.

Some people have praised the company for taking a bold step to support fighting against racism. Others have announced a boycott of the sports company and posted videos on social media of them burning their Nike shoes.

 

President of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerry Falwell Jr said the school wants a supplier that supports veterans, the American flag, American values and law enforcement, according to local news station WSET.
 
Liberty University has a contract for Nike to provide equipment and clothing for all of its athletic programs until 2024.

Franklin Graham Should Be Banned From UK for Preaching ‘Hatred and Bigotry,’ Muslim Group Demands

The U.K.’s top Muslim organization has said that U.S. evangelist Franklin Graham should be denied a visa to the country for his “hatred” and “bigotry.”

“In the past the government has banned individuals whom they claim are ‘not conducive to the public good’. Mr Graham’s remarks are on record and clearly demonstrate a hatred for Muslims and other minorities,” the Muslim Council of Britain said on Sunday, as reported by The Guardian.

“We would expect the government to apply its criteria here. If it does not, it will send a clear message that it is not consistent in challenging all forms of bigotry.”

British politicians, including a government whip, and even some churches have all raised concerns over Graham being invited to preach at a Christian festival in Blackpool later in September.

Graham has criticized Islam in his rhetoric, especially in the wake of terror attacks around the world, and has backed U.S. President Donald Trump’s hard stance on immigration.

The evangelist, who is president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, has in the past denied any notions that he is planning on preaching hate against Muslims or any other minorities at the…

Boris Johnson has launched an attack on Theresa May’s Brexit strategy, claiming she has ‘wrapped a suicide vest’ around Britain.

The ex-foreign secretary accused the Prime Minister of handing ‘the detonator’ to Brussels’ chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

His extraordinary comments – just hours after he announced he would be divorcing his wife of 25 years, Marina Wheeler – have exposed deep divides within the Tory party, prompting a backlash from senior colleagues.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Mr Johnson lashed out at the Northern Ireland ‘backstop,’ aimed at making sure there is no hard border with Ireland.

He said: ‘We have opened ourselves to perpetual political blackmail. We have wrapped a suicide vest around the British constitution – and handed the detonator to Michel Barnier.

‘We have given him a jemmy with which Brussels can choose – at any time – to crack apart the union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.’

Under the EU’s version of the exit plan, if no trade deal with the UK resolved the issue of the border problem, Northern Ireland would effectively remain part of the single market.

Mr Johnson added: ‘At every stage in the talks so far, Brussels gets what Brussels wants.

‘We have agreed to the EU’s timetable; we have agreed to hand over £39 billion, for nothing in return.

‘Under the Chequers proposal we are set to agree to accept their rules – forever – with no say on the making of those rules.

‘It is a humiliation. We look like a seven-stone weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500lb gorilla.’

New stats show growing interest in Book of Common Prayer

It said its 23rd annual three-day conference at Cirencester’s Royal Agricultural University later this month is a sell-out with more than 130 delegates attending – the highest number to date.
 
Latest figures show that more than 260 people joined as new members of the PBS last year, an increase of more than 40 per cent on the previous year, bringing the total to more than 3,000. The number of corporate members – including churches, schools and businesses – rose by almost 50 per cent from 25 to a total of 67.

  

PBS describes itself as encouraging the rediscovery and use of the majesty and spiritual depth of Thomas Cranmer’s Book of Common Prayer (BCP) at the heart of the Church of England’s worship.

Commenting on the growing enthusiasm for The Book of Common Prayer, PBS chairman Prudence Dailey said: “The Prayer Book is as relevant today as it ever was and increasingly it is being appreciated by young adults. We are seeing growing interest in the society’s activities among those in their twenties and thirties.”
 
She revealed that the society’s work among ordinands suggests that many in the new generation of young clergy will be enthusiastic about using the BCP for services.

An attack on a kosher restaurant by masked neo-Nazis on the sidelines of an anti-migrant protest in an eastern German city shows there’s a deep problem with right-wing extremism in the region and should be treated as a call to action, the head of Germany’s Central Council of Jews said Sunday.

Josef Schuster, who had previously condemned the violent far-right protests in Chemnitz on Aug. 26 and 27 before the attack on the Jewish restaurant was even known, said “we need to call the problem by its name.”

“The racist riots and the attack on the kosher restaurant in Chemnitz show how strongly rooted right-wing extremism is in the region,” he said.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets after a German man was stabbed and killed Aug. 26 after authorities say a verbal argument with migrant men escalated. An Iraqi and a Syrian have been arrested on manslaughter charges. That day several foreigners were injured after authorities said they were attacked in the streets.

The next night, around 6,000 far-right protesters including neo-Nazis, members of the anti-migrant Alternative for Germany party and others clashed with counter-demonstrators. On the sidelines, masked protesters attacked the Shalom restaurant with rocks and bottles, injuring the owner while shouting “Jewish pig, get out of Germany.”

The unrest following the killing has focused new attention on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision three years ago to allow hundreds of thousands of refugees into the country, straining its resources and hospitality beyond what some Germans considered acceptable.

7 Injured by Knifeman’s Attack in Paris – Urban Christian News

Two British tourists were stabbed in the head and chest by a rampaging knifeman who injured seven people in Paris on Sunday night.

The attacker, reportedly in his 30s, was using child identity documents issued to an Afghan minor, according to claims made by an investigating source.

He was described as being of Pakistani or Afghan origin, and began “slashing passers-by” on the Loire Quay in the north of the city, according to reports.

Armed with a 15-inch blade and a metal bar, he first stabbed two men and a woman outside the MK2 cinema complex.

He then proceeded to a nearby street, where he attacked two British tourists, according to investigators.

One was particularly badly hurt after being “stabbed in the head”,  while the other was “cut in the chest”.

Petanque players who saw what happened then tried to intervene, throwing metal balls at the attacker.

Officials said they do not believe the attack was linked to terrorism, but it followed a series of attacks in the city that were claimed by ISIS.

The area is reportedly well known for its immigrant communities, many of them Afghan, some sleeping rough as they try to get to the UK to claim asylum.

Some are minors travelling alone, although adults have reportedly been known to pose as children in the hope of getting priority treatment by authorities.

Dallas police officer charged with manslaughter

Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was charged last night with manslaughter in a tragedy that has gripped our city. Botham Jean, a twenty-six-year-old Dallas resident, was killed when Guyger entered his apartment, apparently by mistake, and shot him.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said that Jean’s death meant the loss of “a potential leader for this city for years to come.” Jean worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers in downtown Dallas and led worship in his church.

In other news, five people were wounded in a Tennessee nightclub shooting early this morning. Seven people were injured in a knife attack in Paris last night. An Australian man has been charged with murdering his three young daughters, their mother, and their grandmother.

And the National Hurricane Center announced this morning that Hurricane Florence poses “an increasing risk of life-threatening impacts” to the East Coast. South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia have already declared a state of emergency.

The Very Rev Nicholas Papadopulos is the 81st dean at the cathedral. 
 
Dean of Salisbury is the head of Chapter, Salisbury Cathedral’s governing body, responsible for the Cathedral fabric, worship, music, outreach, education, library and archives and visitors’ experience.

 

Dean Nicholas said: “Becoming Dean of this ancient and beautiful Cathedral is an awesome responsibility. This place shaped my early ministry and taught me the power of worship and the value of a shared life of prayer. 

‘This Cathedral community sits at the heart of the city, just yards from the High Street – a place to gather, a place to relax, a place to study and a place to pray. It is a symbol of hope that is visible for miles around.

Youth pastor killed by police officer after mistaking flat for her own

Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger reported that she had shot Botham Jean on Thursday night. She told responding officers that she believed the victim’s apartment was her own when she entered it.
 
The responding officers administered first aid to Jean but he was pronounced dead after he was taken to the hospital.

 

Jean, 26, was a member of Dallas West Church of Christ, where he taught a young adult Bible study every week. 

Members held a vigil for him at the church on Saturday. According to FOX 4, the family asked that Jean be remembered as a youth pastor, singer, a good friend and family member.

 

Jessica Berry, a close friend of Jean’s who’s also a member of the church, told TV news outlet WFAA : “It’s like a big chunk of the church’s heart has been ripped out.”

Jean grew up in St Lucia and attended Harding University, a private Christian university in Arkansas.
 
He often led campus worship services before graduating in 2016, the school said in a statement.
 
Harding University President Bruce McLarty shared a memory of Jean with students in chapel Friday morning.
 
“At lectureship one year, I asked him to lead singing one night. Because of the subject, there was a particular old hymn that I asked him if he would mind leading,” McLarty said.

Topic: Find a Happy Medium [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Monday September 10, 2018]

I remember sitting in my home looking up the word gentle in Strong’s concordance and saying, “Lord, You’ve got to help me!” I thought I could never be gentle. Finally, the Lord began to do a work in me in the area of gentleness. The only problem was that, like so many other people in the body of Christ, I was such an extremist that I couldn’t “strike a happy medium.”

Once I saw that I was overbalanced in one area, I thought I had to go totally in the other direction. I “adjusted” and “adapted” far too much. I became so “gentle” and “kind” and “patient” that I wouldn’t exercise any discipline over my youngest son, who was born after my other children were grown. I also went overboard in my relationship with others. I let things get out of hand in my marriage, my home, and my ministry. I learned from my experiences that one extreme is just as bad as the other. What we must learn in all this is balance.

On one hand, we must not be harsh and hard. But on the other hand, we must not be weak and excessively soft. We must not be irritable and impatient, flying off the handle and acting out of emotion. On the other hand, we must not be so mild mannered that we become doormats and whipping posts for those who will take advantage of us if we give them a chance. There is a time to be patient and forbearing, and there is a time to be firm and decisive. There is a time to “not be angry,” and there is a time to display righteous indignation. It is wisdom to know when to do which.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to live a balanced life in every area. Please show me any areas where I have gone to an unhealthy extreme. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
