Bad Pastors Just Reappear at New Churches, Repeat Sins

(Screenshot: Willow Creek Community Church)Bill Hybels, pastor and founder of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill., announces his resignation at a church family meeting on Tuesday April 10, 2018.

Christian author Randy Alcorn has warned in the wake of the Bill Hybels and many other evangelical sex abuse scandals that too often the same mistakes are repeated.

Alcorn, who is also founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries, mentioned in a blog post on Monday several recent cases of sexual misconduct and abuse that have rocked the evangelical world, from university professors to pastors taking advantage of students and congregants.

While he did not mention Willow Creek Community Church and its former senior pastor Bill Hybels by name, he summarized the scandal at the megachurch:

“One of the most prominent pastors in the country, from one of the most prominent churches has had numerous women come forward accusing him of sexual advances going back many years. The entire board and most of the pastoral staff have resigned, some of them due to realizing they had defended the pastor and discredited the victims and hence disqualified themselves,” Alcorn described.

“Last I heard the pastor was still denying he’d done anything wrong, despite the…

Church responds to Sikh temple arson attack

A man has been arrested after the doors to a Sikh temple were set alight in a deliberate attack.

The Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Edinburgh suffered smoke damage in Tuesday’s incident.

Police and fire crews were called to the temple in Sheriff Brae at around 5am. No-one was injured.

Rt Rev Susan Brown, moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland said in a statement: “How sad that a place of worship should be the target of such a hateful act.

“We recognise the actions of a small minority do not reflect the relations that exist with your local community. There is no room in Scotland for intolerance.”

A Police Scotland statement said: “Police in Edinburgh have arrested a 49-year-old man as part of their investigation into a suspicious fire at the Sikh temple in Sheriff Brae during the early hours of Tuesday 28th August.

“Inquiries into this incident are continuing.”

Members of the Sikh community condemned the suspected attack, and Scotland’s Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said he was “saddened” by the incident.

The gurdwara, situated in a former church, is the only Sikh centre in the Scottish capital, serving a community of more than 500 people.

Remembering John McCain: 10 of His Best Quotes

Remembering John McCain: 10 of His Best Quotes

John McCain, long time US senator, presidential candidate, veteran, and Vietnam war hero, died this week, at the age of 81. He had fought a year-long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The day before his death, he had shared the announcement that he’d no longer be receiving treatments.

His death was confirmed with the following statement:

“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018. With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”

Known as “the Maverick,” McCain leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Cindy, and 7 children, along with a legacy of great courage and strength for our country. He was willing to take a stand on issues that were difficult. He was authentic, he was real. He was willing to act even in the midst of uncertainty. He believed in his country, and when asked about that in an interview with Tom Brokaw just a year before his death, he said this, “I believe in America, I believe in its people…I am not a pessimist about the future, I still think we’re still a shining city on a hill.”

McCain first stepped into the public spotlight as a Navy fighter pilot during the Vietnam War when his plane was shot down. He was then taken prisoner and sadly suffered five and a half years of torture and confinement before…

Keys To Family Increase (Part 4) by Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Topic: Keys To Family Increase (Part 4)

Dear Reader,

Everybody in life desires increase; and it is good and godly to desire it. That is why we will find out from God’s Word today what it takes to enjoy increase, so you can keep on increasing in life.

God is a giving God. Giving is godlike. If we claim to be God’s children, we must emulate Him in all things. This week, we will be looking at Giving.

God so loved the world that He gave. He demonstrated His love for man by taking the initiative and giving us His Son, even when no man understood what He was doing and could not say, “Thank you”. It was in His selfless giving that the world was won to His side. If man and wife will learn to prefer each other in love and think of ways to bless each other; family life will be so much sweeter. God’s Word says: Love is…never…selfish…(1 Corinthians 13:5 (TLB).

Giving to God

Money is actually limited in value except it is placed in the hands of God. It has wings. If you don’t send it on errand, someday it will take up wings and fly away by itself.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven (Proverbs 23:5).

Money is a god; it seeks to be worshipped. That is why Matthew 6:24 says you cannot serve God and mammon. “Mammon” means money. It is a good servant but a terrible master. Don’t allow the absence of it to determine the atmosphere of your home. When some people are angry, you will know there is no money in their pockets. Don’t let it destroy the peace and joy in your home.

The Bible declares that two is better than one. You can “better” your giving to the Lord by giving as a family, thus making better your receiving (Luke 6:38). You must encourage each other to sow seeds. Though hard times have come upon the earth, you will be exempted as you purpose to keep sowing into the Kingdom.

As a family, ensure your tithe is paid, either separately as husband, wife and children or together as a family. Give offerings according to your size also. Don’t rob God in your offerings. Ensure that your children also give offerings.

It is wisdom to sow to the Kingdom, even when you need every penny. There is a portion to eat and a portion to sow (Proverbs 11:24).

Giving to The Poor

You must be generous to the poor, the underprivileged and those who do not have as much as you have. God loves the merciful and releases blessings upon them. God’s Word says: He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse (Proverbs 28:27).

When you reach out to the poor, God ensures that you do not lack. Anyone who pretends not to know those who are in need is selfish and will incur a curse upon himself.

Cornelius was a man given to alms; and one day, God visited him and blessed him with salvation. You too can register in God’s book of remembrance by being open and generous. Women can emulate the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31.

Giving to Men of God

As couples, you must provoke each other to do the right things. Sowing to the men of God placed over us is right and provokes great blessings from the Lord. God is glorified when you handle your money this way.

Giving to Parents

We have an undeniable responsibility towards our parents. It is your duty to honour your parents according to how God has blessed you. You can’t have parents, who don’t have food to eat and you are wasting food in your house. That is irresponsibility! You must honour your parents, if you want it to be well with you.

Many marriages are in financial mess because they fail in their covenant responsibilities to their parents. God’s Word says: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth (Ephesians 6:1-3).

Also, giving gifts to each other spices up the marriage. You can take the initiative to surprise your partner with thoughtful little gifts. If it did wonders for you during your courtship days, it will do you no harm to carry the habit over into marriage.

Those who run after money are running after sorrow. My husband often says, “If you run after money you will mourn.” So, run after God, and money will run after you. Are you set to run after God? You need to be born again. If you are already born again, rejoice because your case is settled. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

What’s Next for Me after LifeWay?

Please indulge me for one more blog post about my decision to retire from LifeWay. In my previous post, I shared the reasons why I am retiring, why God is leading me to leave an organization I love deeply. In this post, I will share some of my plans for life post-LifeWay.

I understand the plans of man are not always the plans of God. Everything I write here could change in the blink of an eye. I also want to make clear my total loyalty to LifeWay. I will not get in the way of the next CEO, but I will be the biggest cheerleader for this company I love so much.

While I do look forward to a lot more flexibility to spend time with my family, I will continue to do the work of ministry. I cannot imagine a life otherwise. Here are my plans for now:

  • Revitalize Network. In anticipation of my retirement, I applied with the IRS to start a non-profit 501c3 where churches will work joyously together for greater health and revitalization. I am incredibly excited about this future; and I think God has great plans for it. Revitalize Network has now been approved, and it is ready to launch next month.
  • ThomRainer.com. I will continue this blog and related ministries on the blog. The total number of views and emails opened is over 10 million each year. We touch every nation in the world. I thank God for the influence He has given this daily blog. And I particularly love the post every Sunday (“Pray for”) where we pray for a specific church.
  • Our podcasts: Rainer on Leadership and Revitalize and Replant. I have…

Three facts explain John McCain’s popularity

Today is John Sidney McCain III’s birthday. The war hero, longtime senator, and presidential candidate would have been eighty-two years old.

His body is lying in state in the Arizona state capitol today. A private service will be held at 10 a.m., then the public can pay their respects beginning at 2 p.m. local time.

Tomorrow, a memorial service will be held at North Phoenix Baptist Church, his home congregation. The event will be livestreamed on McCain’s website.

Friday, McCain’s body will lie in state inside the US Capitol Rotunda. Only thirty other people in US history have been so honored. His Senate colleagues and staff will honor him in an 11:00 a.m. ceremony, then members of the public will pay their respects from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, a televised funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. in the Washington National Cathedral. At McCain’s request, former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama will deliver eulogies. On Sunday, McCain’s family will hold a private service at the US Naval Academy before laying his body to rest at the academy’s cemetery.

What explains John McCain’s abiding popularity across our land?

One: He put principles before politics

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called McCain “a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service.” Such praise from a leader of his own political party is unsurprising.

But Chuck Schumer, a Democrat who serves as Senate Minority Leader, also honored McCain: “John’s dedication to the country and to the men and women who served it was unwavering. His life is a story of American heroism personified.” Other Democrats, from Barack Obama and Joe Biden to his fellow senators and Arizona constituents, have echoed Schumer’s praise.

McCain was a staunch conservative (he had a lifetime 81 percent conservative voting score with the conservative Club for Growth), but he worked with Democrats on…

Northumberland vicar accused of groping plane passenger

Rev Peter McConnell allegedly touched a man on-board an overnight British Airways flight from Philadelphia to Heathrow last March, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

The 63-year-old vicar of St Helen’s Church in Longhorsley denies one charge of sexual assault.

The court heard that Rev McConnell moved to a seat next to the alleged victim and tried to engage in conversation, making “odd” comments which made him feel “very uncomfortable”.

The American student claimed the vicar had been drinking “pretty heavily”.

The court was also told Rev McConnell “apologised profusely” after the alleged incident.

Rev McConnell said he neither touched the alleged victim nor engaged in graphic conversation with him.

The trial continues.

Sir Cliff Richard says new album will reflect ‘bad period’ in his life

The 77-year-old singer, whose album Rise Up will be released on November 23, said its title and lyrics reflect the “bad period” he has been through.

Sir Cliff was recently awarded a substantial amount in damages after a judge ruled in his favour and found that BBC coverage of a police raid on his home in 2014, following a child sex assault allegation, was a “very serious” invasion of his privacy.

The music star announced his new 16-track album from London’s Abbey Road Studios, where he recorded his debut single Move It.

Move It was released 60 years ago, on August 29 1958.

Sir Cliff said: “I chose Rise Up as the title track because after the bad period I went through in my life, I’ve managed to Rise Up out of what seemed like a quagmire.”

He said he spent two years of his life where he “couldn’t sleep or think about anything”, and so he feels he has risen up.

Yui Mok/PA Wire

“I love the lyric ‘They’re never gonna break me down, they’re never gonna take me down, they know I’m gonna rise up feeling stronger’,” he added.

“It is always great to sing lyrics you can ‘feel’ and I really felt those words! So, I believe that we have the right title for the album and I am so thrilled in the way that it has turned out.”

Sir Cliff said he is excited that the record may be a “revival for me” and by the prospect of a new audience tuning in to listen…

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 29 August 2018 – Come Out Of Spiritual Ignorance

TOPIC: Come Out Of Spiritual Ignorance (Mountain Of Fire And Miracle Ministries Wednesday, 29 August 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 3:1-5

MEMORY VERSE: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:6

The MESSAGE:

Nicodemus was initially attracted to Jesus because of the miracles he saw. He wanted to know more about Jesus and the doctrines that He taught. Nicodemus himself was a teacher of the Jews (John 3:10) but he lacked spiritual understanding of the kingdom of God and the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. As a Pharisee, he had lived by the strictest possible religious rules, but a day came when he chose to seek answers to the mysteries of the miracles of Jesus. He was a man of high moral character, deep religious hunger, and yet profound spiritual blindness but deeply sincere in his quest for greater knowledge. He confronted his spiritual ignorance in the most sincere way by approaching the One who could help him out. Unlike several of his fellow Pharisees, he opted out of hypocrisy and faced the fact squarely. There are many of us in the church today who are modern day Pharisees living by the strict religious rules and doctrines of our denomination but unfortunately wallowing in deep spiritual ignorance. We observe the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of our denomination but do not have knowledge of the Scriptures backing up such doctrines. We refrain from wearing trousers, jewelry, painted lips and faces, hair attachment, etc but do not have deep spiritual conviction why it should be so. We benefit from the outpouring of the miracles, signs and wonders in the fellowship, but do not have understanding of the most essential thing: the kingdom of God.

There are many of us today who occupy big positions in the church but are yet to encounter Christ. We claim to be born again but are yet to experience the new birth. We are high-ranking teachers, preachers and leaders in the church but are not in any way better than the unbelievers in attitude and conduct. We boast and express the confidence that we are going to heaven but fail to realise that we must experience a spiritual birth from above. We lack the Spirit of God (John 3:5), and the Word of God (James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23-25) required imparting the life of God in us. We fail to realise that the evidence of salvation is the witness of the Spirit within (Romans 8:9), and that the Spirit enters our lives when we believe (Acts 10:43-48; Ephesians 1:13-14). When the Spirit enters your life, you become partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) and from that time on, you begin to have appetite for the things of God (1 Peter 2:2-3). You will no longer have desire to go back to the foul things of the world that once appealed to you (2 Peter 2:20-22). You will daily feed on the word of God and grow into spiritual maturity (Hebrews 5:11-14) so that you can be steadfast in the faith. If these transformations have not taken place in your life, you need to come out of your spiritual ignorance and seek deeper relationship with Jesus today.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
MANY OF US TODAY ARE MODERN DAY PHARISEES LIVING BY STRICT RULES AND DOCTRINES OF OUR DENOMINATION BUT BLIND SPIRITUALLY.

PROPHETIC WORD:
You shall not lack the spiritual understanding of the kingdom of God.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Holy Spirit, reveal to me all the areas of spiritual ignorance in my life, in the name of Jesus.
2. Unteachable spirit, come out of my life and die, in the name of Jesus.
3. Cage of church position, holding my spiritual growth captive, break and release me, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. I shall not give up but my spiritual ignorance shall give up and die, in the name of Jesus.
5. Holy Spirit, open my spiritual eyes, in the name of Jesus.
6. Holy Ghost fire, purge my spiritual ears of every satanic blockage, in the name of Jesus.
7. My spiritual life, get out of the valley of ignorance and move to the mountain top by fire, in the name of Jesus.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 29 August 2018 Devotional — Our Number One Goal in Life

Topic: Our Number One Goal in Life [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Wednesday August 29, 2018]

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. — Colossians 3:2

Our number one goal in life as Christians should be Christlikeness. Jesus is the express image of the Father, and we are to follow in His footsteps. He came as the pioneer of our faith to show us by example how we should live and conduct ourselves. We should seek to behave with people the way Jesus did.

Our goal is not to see how successful we can be in business or how famous we can be. It is not prosperity, popularity, or even building a big ministry, but to be Christ-like.

The world doesn’t only need a sermon preached to them; they also need to see actions backing up what we say we believe as Christians. Our lives should make other people hungry and thirsty for what we have in Christ. The Bible refers to us as salt, which makes people thirsty, and light, which exposes darkness.

Many Christians have bumper stickers on their cars, or they wear some kind of jewelry that indicates they are believers in Jesus Christ. The world is not impressed by our bumper stickers and Christian jewelry; they want to see fruit of godly behavior. They want to see people who claim to be Christians living what they preach, not just preaching to others while it doesn’t seem to be working in their own lives.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me today to be a good witness for You and truly show people what You are like. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
