Open Heavens 30 August 2018 – Raise that Weak Person

Open Heavens 30 August 2018 Thursday Daily Devotional by Pastor E A Adeboye – Raise that Weak Person

Topic: Raise that Weak Person

Memorise: “Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.”- Isaiah 35:3

Read: Matthew 25:34-46 (KJV)

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Bible in One Year: Psalm 88-91, Matthew 27:15-44

Open Heavens 30 August 2018 Thursday MESSAGE:

Weakness can be such a terrible thing. A person who is weak is helpless and even sometimes hopeless. People can be weak in several ways; some are weak financially, emotionally, spiritually, academically and so on. People who are weak are not in a state where they can protect or defend themselves. This is why anyone who oppresses the weak is a coward and a bully. As a disciple of Jesus Christ who Himself was a help to the helpless, if a person is financially weak, you should not use that opportunity to cheat him or her. It is disheartening that some employers look for desperate people to employ so that they can pay them far less than the regular applicable wages. Some other people constantly search for people in financial crises so that they can buy off their properties very cheaply. Are you playing with the emotions of the opposite sex because they are emotionally weak? Do you condemn people because they are not as strong as you are spiritually? You need to have a change of heart today.

Believe me honestly, there is no seed sown that will not be reaped. There was a man who was very good at treating people who had broken bones. Whenever someone with a broken bone was rushed to him, because of their desperation, he would charge their family members an extremely high price that would be very difficult to pay. If they complained about the cost, he would get a cutlass and suggest that if they couldn’t afford his charges, he could amputate the victim’s broken limb at a cheaper price. Not desiring the amputation of a member of their family, they would agree to his exorbitant price and pay. Through these means, this man eventually became very rich and had many houses. Down the line, he fell sick and had to spend so much money diagnosing the cause of his ailment. Before long, he started selling his houses in order to afford his medical bills, but the doctors could still not tell what was wrong with him. After he sold his last house, it was discovered that he had cancer, but by this time, it was already too late for him. He died a poor man. Beloved, don’t be deceived into thinking that you can get away with wicked acts. Whatever a man sows, he shall also reap (Galatians 6:7).

No real Christian should ever turn his back on someone who needs help. That is not the nature of our Father. Our Lord Jesus Christ went about doing good, and He was always full of compassion (Acts 10:38). When He met a widow on her way to bury her son, without being asked, he wiped away her tears (Luke 7:12-15). If you claim to be Christ-like, you must also be full of compassion for the weak around you. As seen in our Bible text, helping the weak is synonymous with helping God, because He feels their pains. So ask yourself: are you helping to reduce Jesus’ pain, or are you ignoring Him?

Open Heavens 30 August 2018 Thursday Hymn 15: Nearer My God To Thee.

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

There let me see the sight, an open Heaven;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee. Nearer to Thee!

Keith Getty Reflects on Songwriting With God, State of Christian Music Today

(Photo: The Gettys)Keith and Kristyn Getty are the preeminent married musicians and songwriters from North Ireland.

Keith Getty, who’s known for his theologically rich hymns that are sung in churches worldwide, was honored last year as an “Officer of the Order of the British Empire” by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution in music and modern hymn writing.

Earlier this summer he received the medal and today he’s still penning anthems and hymns for the church, working hard to refine his craft.

“I’ve written thousands of songs, with some years releasing only one or two songs that were actually good enough,” he told The Christian Post in a recent interview.

“For me it’s been a lot of hard work, the help of the Lord in His kindness, who allows the Spirit to inspire occasional moments of uniqueness, moments of peculiar inspiration,” for such is the nature of the creative process, he explained.

Below is an edited transcript of CP’s interview with hymn writer and artist Keith Getty.

CP: You are known for writing songs with substance and theological depth with singable melodies. Yet all too often that’s not the norm in many places. How do you see the state of Christian music, particularly the kind written for churches to use in worship today?

KG: If anything today, we do not often embrace or pursue the hugely vast and rich privilege we have to be a vibrant singing people and to experience deep refreshment from the Lord. As we read the Bible and as we look at Christian history, great movements of lasting significance are both underpinned by and inspire deep passionate hymns of the faith.

Kidnapped Schoolgirl Leah Sharibu Appeals for Rescue in Audio Recording, Reports Say

(Morning Star News) – In an audio recording revealed yesterday, kidnapped Christian schoolgirl Leah Sharibu appeals to the government of Nigeria to win her release from Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, according to several published sources.

Boko Haram released more than 100 schoolgirls about four weeks after kidnapping them on Feb. 19 but held Leah, 15, because she refused to convert to Islam, Morning Star News revealed on March 26.

In the audio recording obtained by a journalist for Nigerian online news outlet The Cable, Leah says in her native Hausa that she wants the government and “people of goodwill” to rescue her.

“I am begging you to treat me with compassion, I am calling on the government, particularly, the president, to pity me and get me out of this serious situation,” she says on the audio.

CNN today reported that her father, Sharibu Nathan, confirmed that the voice is that of his daughter.

Boko Haram, which seeks to impose Islamic law (sharia) throughout Nigeria, kidnapped the girls from a boarding school in Dapchi, the Government Girls Science Technical College, in nothereastern Nigeria’s Yobe state.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, told CNN that intelligence personnel were analyzing the voice recording, and that officials would issue a statement after studying…

Pastor Andrew Stoecklein Was Inside Church When He Attempted Suicide, Police Reveal

(Photo: Instagram)The late Pastor Andrew Stoecklein, 30, of Inland Hills Church in Chino, Calif., was pronounced dead on Aug. 25, 2018 after a suicide attempt inside the church a day earlier. He had struggled with depression and anxiety.

Megachurch Pastor Andrew Stoecklein was at work inside the Inland Hills Church his father founded in Chino, California, when he attempted to take his life last Friday, which ultimately led to his death a day later, local police have revealed.

Church officials who announced the pastor’s passing late Sunday did not previously disclose that Stoecklein attempted suicide in the church.

When contacted by The Christian Post for further details on what may have triggered the suicide attempt, a church official who identified himself only as Pastor Chris, told The Christian Post that he was unable to immediately discuss the situation.

Tamrin Olden, crime prevention supervisor with the City of Chino Police Department declined giving any detailed specifics from the formal police report but told CP late Tuesday that police received a call from the church about Stoecklein’s suicide attempt at about 11:08 a.m. last Friday.

“Someone called in and said that they’d seen him or discovered him at the church. I don’t know the details of where he was at,”…

White House Hosts Dinner to Honor Evangelicals ‘for All the Good Work They Do’

WASHINGTON (RNS) — The White House hosted a dinner Monday night (Aug. 27) for about 100 evangelical Christian leaders and senior-level officials, honoring evangelicals, as one participant explained, “for all the good work they do.”

Calling America “a nation of believers,” President Trump said at the event that they had gathered to “celebrate America’s heritage of faith, family and freedom.”

“As you know, in recent years the government tried to undermine religious freedom, but the attacks on communities of faith are over,” the president said. “We’ve ended it. We’ve ended it. Unlike some before us, we are protecting your religious liberty.”

Trump also took the opportunity to press evangelicals to turn out their supporters on Election Day later this year, according to an audio recording of the event leaked to The New York Times.

“I just ask you to go out and make sure all of your people vote,” Trump told the crowd, according to the Times. “Because if they don’t — it’s Nov. 6 — if they don’t vote we’re going to have a miserable two years and we’re going to have, frankly, a very hard period of time because then it just gets to be one election — you’re one election away from losing everything you’ve got.”

Trump then appeared to claim that if Democrats win, they “will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently.”

Attendees such as Paula White, a Florida pastor who serves as one of Trump’s closest spiritual advisers, said the event followed an afternoon of…

Fresh concerns raised for Christians in China

Andrew Boyd, a spokesperson from Release International told Premier: “The typical cross on a Chinese church is bright red but the authorities in some areas have been saying, ‘You’ve got to pull that down, you’ve got to replace that with a Chinese flag’.

“And we’ve seen over the past few years there’s been a campaign of cross removals taking place.”

The religious freedoms organisation said the situation has got worse since the new legislation, which gives authorities more say over what churches can do and whether they can even exist.

It claimed more churches are being driven underground as a result.

Boyd told Premier the Chinese authorities feel threatened by Christianity.

“The number of Christians within China now outnumbers members of the Communist party. China is heading towards being the most Christianised nation on earth, which is really extraordinary.

“And the authorities are deeply concerned about this so they are tightening up on their regulations and tightening up on the Church…but that’s the good news – that the Church is growing!”

The Christian organisation has launched an online petition for the attention of China’s President Xi Jinping that will end 31st October.

Listen to Andrew Boyd speaking with Premier’s Cara Bentley:

SBC President JD Greear Responds to Criticism for Attending White House Evangelical Dinner

SBC President JD Greear Responds to Criticism for Attending White House Evangelical Dinner

Answering criticism about his attendance at the White House evangelical dinner, Southern Baptist Convention president J.D. Greear says he attended“ in order to listen and meet other leaders and offer perspective where asked.”

Critics questioned why Greear attended the dinner in Washington, D.C. The SBC President has said the church should not say what political policy God has.

“I received an invitation from the White House to attend a dinner in which the administration would address faith leaders. I weigh every decision carefully and consulted with a number of leaders across the political spectrum,” Greear said in a statement. “In this case, I chose to attend in order to listen and meet other leaders and offer perspective where asked.”

He added that he is “as committed as ever to decoupling the Church from partisan politics.”

“[M]y desire for the SBC remains what it always has been — promoting a culture in which the Gospel is above all,” he wrote. “Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones for the sake of the Gospel.”

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were given a Bible signed by evangelical leaders that said: “History will record the greatness that you have brought for generations.”

Greear said he did not sign the Bible.

In a piece for the New Yorker he said: “One person said to me,…

Soul Survivor ushers in 1160 new Christians

The events that attracted an estimated 20,000 people were hosted by lead pastors Mike Pilavachi and Andy Croft.

Responding to the number of new Christians, Pilavachi said: “It’s always a privilege and joy to watch young people give their lives to Jesus; there’s nothing better.

“We have had some incredible times over the summer when there’s been such a tangible sense of God’s presence, we’ve seen people healed and set free by the Holy Spirit in amazing ways, and there have been wonderful times of great joy and celebration. Many bravely came forward for prayer after we tackled issues such as addiction, pornography and depression, and God poured out his grace and love.”

Several testimonies shared by the church highlighted the impact the festival had on youngsters.

Noah, 14, said: “Before I came I didn’t really believe in Jesus and I wasn’t sure about coming, but I went and throughout the week my faith began to grow, then, on the last night, I felt the Holy Spirit, it was an incredible feeling, and later in that session I gave my life to Jesus!”

Rosie said: “I wasn’t planning on coming to Soul Survivor this year. I’d had a really difficult couple of years at home which led to me becoming very physically and mentally ill.

“Now, I am coming home with a whole fresh perspective on everything and I am no longer afraid of difficult times because I know the Lord is with me….

NPR Investigation Shows Federal School Shooting Stats Highly Inflated

NPR Investigation Shows Federal School Shooting Stats Highly Inflated

This Spring the Department of Education released a document outlining the results from the Civil Rights Data Collection survey (CRDC). In the document the Department of Education included the number of school shootings that happened in the U.S. during the 2015-2016 school year, reporting, “Nearly 240 schools (0.2 percent of all schools) reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting.”

In an effort to verify this data, National Public Radio (NPR) began to reach out to the schools that reportedly had one or more incidents involving a school shooting.

Over the course of three months NPR repeatedly reached out to the schools to ask them about what they reported and if the results of the survey were accurately representing them. Of the 240 shooting related incidents recorded in the document, NPR was only able to confirm eleven, finding that most of the shootings never happened.

NPR was not able to contact every school despite repeated efforts, however, in 161 cases, they found that representatives from schools or school districts confirmed that nothing happened and if something regarding a firearm did happen, it was not within the government’s definition of a shooting. A school shooting as defined by the government is, “any discharge of a weapon at a school-sponsored event.”

It is unclear how this error occurred. This was the first year…
