Church Near Kampala, Uganda Closes after Months of Islamist Attacks


NAIROBI, Kenya, August 22, 2018 (Morning Star News) – A church outside Kampala, capital of Uganda, has closed after months of area Muslims pelting its gatherings with rocks, sources said.

 

The final blow came on Aug. 4, when a stone thrown through a window struck Pastor Moreen Sanyu of Greater Love Church in Namasuba Para Zone, Wakiso District, and knocked her unconscious, sources said.

 

Pastor Sanyu said she was preaching when the stone smashed through the window pane and struck her on the forehead.

 

“I fell down and became unconscious,” she told Morning Star News. “When I woke up, there were only a few members who surrounded me – the rest of the church members had fled in different directions.”

 

She was rushed to a hospital in Namasuba, where she was treated for two days before being discharged.

 

The next Sunday, Aug. 11, no one came to the worship service, she said.

 

The church had grown quickly after beginning on May 4, 2017 in a predominantly Muslim area, swelling to 400 people at one point, she said. Islamist stone attacks had reduced attendance at worship services to 150 by the end of July, before worshippers stopped coming after the Aug. 4 attack out of fear for their lives.

 

“I am not ready to lose my life by attending the church,” one church member who requested anonymity told Morning Star News.

Pastor Tim Challies has laid down a number of markers that can determine what a healthy church looks like, in the face of many unhealthy ones.

Challies, who pastors Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto, Ontario, and often gives church advice on his social media pages, noted in a Facebook video on Monday that there are “so, so many unhealthy churches.”

He said he received a reader question about how one can “evaluate the spiritual health of a congregation,” but warned that there are no really objective ways, such as modern star-ratings that people have become accustomed to.

The pastor noted that some people talk about the size of their church, or the number of baptisms and the size of the budget as possible indicators of success, but argued that one needs to look at subjective factors when deliberating the question.

“We have to allow the Bible to point us to what the Bible’s values are, what God values, and then say, ‘is our church matching that?'”

Challies said that one marker concerns how many people are coming to Christ.

Vicar’s £140,000 motorbike collection heads to auction

Father Robert Edward Hampson, who was a priest at Holy Trinity Church in South Woodford, was an avid motorbike collector and rider in his spare time. He died in May at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer.

 

His large collection of classic motorcycles worth £140,000 was displayed at the church this week ahead of the sale on 9th November.

 

Mike Davis of H&H, the auction house conducting the sale, said: “The Reverend was known for his tongue in cheek approach to preaching his faith during his time at the Holy Trinity church in South Woodford.

“Robert’s love for old British motorbikes started as a teenager and he would dismantle old gear boxes or engines on his mother’s kitchen table or solder something over the gas cooker. This is when his mum would go mad.”

The headline bike in the collection is the Vincent Black Shadow, with an estimated value of £40,000 to £50,000.

 

There is also a 1938 Sunbeam Model A26, a very rare machine and the only known example on the road today, estimated to sell at £8,000-£9,000.

NOTE: I’m back from summer vacation and want to thank Cynthia Yanof, Drake Holtry, Steven Longoria, Blake Atwood, and Chris Elkins for their excellent work in writing the Daily Article in my absence. I am grateful to partner with them in this ministry.

A plane landed without front wheels after gear failure. Flames ignited on contact. However, the pilot was able to bring the plane safely to a stop. All fifty-nine passengers and five crew members were unharmed.

This incident last Sunday in Peru underscores the intrinsic value of human beings. If the plane had been a test drone, its emergency landing would have generated little interest. But when a passenger plane nearly kills scores of humans, other humans instinctively take notice.

Meanwhile, the body of twenty-year-old missing Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts was discovered yesterday. An illegal immigrant has confessed to killing her. We grieve viscerally the tragic death of one so young.

In other news, Paul Manafort was found guilty yesterday on eight counts in his fraud trial. Whatever we think of the verdict, we should note that a system of jury trial by our peers reflects an intrinsic belief in the value of our peers.

“America’s birth certificate”

Each summer, my wife and I try to visit an area with a unique history. This year, we chose Philadelphia.

We visited the Liberty Bell and noted its iconic message from Leviticus 25:10, “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof.” We stood inside Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were ratified.

We visited the home of Betsy Ross and museums dedicated to aspects of colonial history. We stood at the grave of Benjamin Franklin, one of the most brilliant of a generation of truly brilliant men and women.

But the most moving experience for me personally was one few tourists shared with us.

The advocacy group NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon has partnered with ice cream shop What’s The Scoop? in Portland, Orgegon to sell a new ‘Rocky Roe v. Wade’ flavour.

The ice cream, available for a limited time, is named after the landmark US Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade which legalised abortion in 1973.

 

The grassroots feminist organisation, which advocates for abortion care and works to elect pro-choice officials, has encouraged people to order the icecream by the pint to “help defend reproductive freedom”.

Evangelist, Graham has called the charity “absolutely frantic” and said it’s trivializing a life and death issue.

He added in a Facebook post: “These activists want everyone to believe abortion is a choice or a woman’s right – even something to celebrate. But it’s not. Abortion is murdering a child in its mother’s womb. The Bible says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil …” (Isaiah 5:20).”

The pro-abortion rights group has held rallies to stop Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s selection for a US Supreme Court judge, from being confirmed.

It’s feared Judge Kavanaugh could be instrumental in overturning abortion laws in the country.

Pope hopes Ireland visit will foster ‘unity and reconciliation’

In a video message released ahead of his weekend arrival, Pope Francis said he was excited about his two-day trip to Dublin and the Knock holy shrine in Co Mayo.

The video was released hours after it was confirmed that the Pope will meet victims of clerical sex abuse during his Irish visit.

 

The Pope is also attending the Catholic Church’s World Meeting of Families during a packed itinerary of engagements.

The video message coincided with the opening of the major family-themed event in Dublin on Tuesday evening.

“Although the specific reason for my visit to Ireland is the World Meeting of Families, I would like to include all the members of the Irish family,” said the Pope.

“In a particular way, I pray that it may further the growth of unity and reconciliation among all Christ’s followers, as a sign of that lasting peace which is God’s dream for our whole human family.”

In opening the message, the pontiff said: “As I prepare to visit Ireland in a few days’ time for the World Meeting of Families, I send a warm word of greeting to all the Irish people. I am excited at the thought of returning to Ireland.”

The Pope is not due to travel to Northern Ireland during his visit, despite being urged by religious figures on both sides of the region’s sectarian divide to travel across the border.

10 Guidelines for Paying and Hosting Guest Speakers and Musicians

Money can be an awkward issue for churches and guest speakers.

It’s the issue both parties consider; but it’s often the issue around which both parties tiptoe.

It should not be that way. It’s really a matter of biblical stewardship and hospitality. Over the years, I have worked with many churches and speakers (and a few musicians) to establish some guidelines for hosting and paying guest speakers. Keep in mind, these are guidelines, not rigid rules. There will always be reasons for exceptions.

  1. Pay with a generous spirit. As your church is able, try to abound in generosity to the guest speakers and musicians. Art Rainer actually developed a formula for paying guest preachers specifically. I think his approach is a good starting point for guest preachers. There will be differences for conference leaders, musicians, and others.
  2. Ask the guest speaker for expectations for pay. Don’t be shy to ask guest speakers if they have specific fees or payment guidelines. There is no need to tiptoe around this matter.
  3. Pay promptly. Your church should have the check waiting when the speaker arrives. Get the W-9 form and travel expense reimbursement form completed ahead of time as often as possible. You should never tell a speaker you will get a check to him later after he has completed his engagement with you.
  4. Cover all travel expenses. Those expenses would include airfare or mileage reimbursement, rental car, meals, and lodging. There is nothing wrong with being clear about what level of expenses you…

Topic: You Were Made for Something More [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Wednesday August 22, 2018]

…how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! — Matthew 7:11

The word good means, “useful; valuable; having qualities or a tendency to produce a beneficial effect.”

God is good, without respect to persons. In other words, He is good to all, all the time. His goodness radiates from Him.

Not everything in our life is good, but God can work it out for good if we will trust Him. Joseph suffered much abuse at the hands of his brothers as a young boy, but later in life when he had an opportunity to get revenge against them, he said: You thought evil against me, but God meant it for good (see Genesis 50:20). Joseph could have been bitter, but he searched for the good in his painful situation.

God’s entire motive and purpose is to do good to everyone who will receive it from Him. It is impossible for God not to be good, because it is His character. Don’t think that God is like people, because His ways and thoughts are far above ours (see Isaiah 55:8–9).

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for being good…all the time. Help me to expect Your goodness throughout my day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Thousands gather in Dublin as World Meeting of Families opens

Thousands descended on Dublin’s Royal Dublin Society (RDS) on Tuesday evening to attend the opening ceremony.

Church bells were rung simultaneously across Ireland’s 26 dioceses to launch the five-day Catholic congress. Prayers were also said throughout the dioceses.

 

More than 37,000 people from 116 different countries are expected to attend the RDS for a series of events as part of the Catholic festival.

Hundreds of thousands more will attend the celebrations that will be led by Pope Francis this weekend in Dublin and Knock.

The WMOF will culminate with the closing papal mass in the Phoenix Park on Sunday.

The event has gained huge significance since the Pope made a statement on Monday apologising for the atrocities of clerical sexual abuse.

In a letter to the world’s more than 1 billion Catholics, Pope Francis said the Church needed to move to end the culture of death within it.
