College Students to Learn about ‘Queering the Bible’ and ‘Transgender Christs’ This Fall

The nation’s college students will have the option of taking classes discussing “queering childhood,” “queering the Bible” and “transgender Christs,” according to a report by CampusReform.com.

Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., is offering the new class on Queering Childhood, which will discuss “the figure of the Child and how this figuration is used by politics, law, and medicine to justify continued cultural investment in reproductive heteronormativity and productive ablebodiedness.” Campus Reform added that the class will focus on childhoods of “queer and crip children,” and will spotlight works related to “gender studies, childhood studies, disability studies, and queer theory.”

Eugene Lang College in New York City will offer a class on “Queering and Decolonizing Theology,” which will examine “the sexual ethics and ritualization found in the S&M community,” and “transgender Christs.”

“Christian theology is often depicted as a violent colonial force standing in particular opposition to LGBTQI lives,” the Lang College course description reads, according to Campus Reform.com. “However, over the last 30 years people of faith, activists, and theorists alike have rediscovered what is queer within Christianity, uncovered what is religious within secular queer communities, and used postcolonial…

Taliban Conducts Attacks Across Afghanistan Ahead of Possible Cease-Fire Negotiations – Urban Christian News

The Taliban has conducted a string of unrelenting attacks across Afghanistan in recent days in an apparent effort to improve its bargaining position ahead of possible cease-fire negotiations and elections in October.

The militants on Monday abducted 170 civilians in the country’s North as they traveled to the capital city of Kabul. Afghan forces rescued about 150 of the hostages within hours, and are still negotiating for the release of the rest.

On Aug. 10, Taliban soldiers overran the southeastern city of Ghazni. Afghan forces spent five days trying to push out the militants, who included fighters from Pakistan and Chechnya, before regaining control of the city. Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the Taliban deliberately inflicted economic damage on the city, destroying several buildings and markets. Even as some normalcy has returned to Ghazni in recent days, the Taliban has continued conducting high-casualty attacks across the country, mostly targeting security officials. On Aug. 13, Taliban militants attacked a base in the northern Faryab province and either killed or captured 106 soldiers. And on Aug. 15, insurgents killed at least 39 people after they overran a police checkpoint and an army base in northern Afghanistan.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis last week said the Taliban was likely trying to gain leverage ahead of a cease-fire offer from Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The group also hopes to incite fear ahead of the country’s elections in October, according to Mattis, “so we’ll continue to see this sort of thing.” Earlier this year, Ghani

Christian charity affirms Lego’s call for more play time with kids

A study by Lego also found those who play together for at least 5 hours per week are happier.

Nearly half of families blame things like work, chores and technology for not spending enough time doing so.

Trevor Single from the Christian charity Family Matters Institute spoke on Premier’s News Hour about whether he agreed with these recommendations:

“I believe it’s one of the most important aspects of family life because children can gain so much from it in terms of the ways in which they’re nurtured, they’re encouraged but also in terms of their own well being – it sparks their imagination, it encourages them in so many ways.

“But also it’s great for us as parents to be able to devote time and spend time, pushing aside other things that we’ve been involved in so actually to be able to focus on our children and support them with great play time.”

Speaking about how the bible helps guide parents, he said:

“We have a clear steer that in the way that the father, and our Father, loves us as his children, we should be loving our children, we should be supporting them, we should be embracing them with our love but also reaching out to them and ensuring their growth is in the right direction”

Former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort Found Guilty of Tax and Bank Fraud

Former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort Found Guilty of Tax and Bank Fraud

A jury in Alexandria, VA found President Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, guilty on eight counts of financial fraud. The case, spawned by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, made headlines for weeks as prosecutors introduced thousands of pages of records into evidence.

The jury found Manafort guilty of five counts of tax fraud, two counts of bank fraud and one count of failing to disclose a foreign bank account. The judge declared a mistrial on ten other counts on which the jury did not come to a verdict.

At the heart of the trial were millions of dollars Manafort, 69, made working for a political party in Ukraine who favored pro-Russian policies. The five counts for tax fraud were for filing false tax returns in the years 2010 through 2014. He did not report a foreign bank account in 2012. The remaining counts were related to two bank loans worth over $4 million.

Reporters asked President Trump for his response to Manafort’s conviction after he landed for a rally in West Virginia. He expressed sympathy for Manafort while also arguing that it had nothing to do with his 2016 campaign.

President Trump called the verdict a “sad thing” and said Manafort is “a good man.” Then he told reporters, “This had nothing to do with Russian collusion” before taking a shot at the…

James MacDonald Reflects on 30 Years in Ministry, #MeToo, Millennials and Future of Faith in the US

(Photo: Courtesy of James MacDonald)Pastor James MacDonald preaches at Harvest Bible Chapel.

Christians must return to the hard work of making disciples, abandon the less-is-more approach to church, and examine our own failures when considering the ongoing #MeToo fallout, says Pastor James MacDonald.

In an interview with The Christian Post, the longtime pastor of the multicampus Harvest Bible Chapel in Illinois, candidly shared what he’s learned and continues to learn about the heart of Jesus, and where he sees the Body of Christ going amid profound cultural changes.

With three decades now behind him, MacDonald is already visioncasting and planning for the next 30 years, alongside his three children who are also active in ministry.

MacDonald founded HBC in 1988 with 18 people and today hosts 13,000 at their seven Chicago-area campuses every week. In 2002, he founded the church-planting network Harvest Bible Fellowship.

Below is a lightly edited transcript of James MacDonald’s interview with The Christian Post.

CP: In 30 years of ministry, what is the greatest difference you see in terms of doing ministry in Chicagoland, and, more generally, in America, when you started versus 2018? Broadly speaking, what did American evangelical Christianity look like then, in your view,…

More Evidence Confirms Tall el-Hammam as Biblical City of Sodom – Urban Christian News

I revel when Dr. Steven Collins (now Director of the School of Archaeology, Veritas International University) returns each year from the Tall el-Hammam excavation in Jordan. It seems that after thirteen years at the site every trowel and shovel put in the dirt adds to the evidence of Tall el-Hammam as the Biblical site of Sodom. This year was no different.

Discovering the City of Sodom

But before I provide an update, let me jump back in history for our readers not attuned to Dr. Collins’ discovery, as set forth in his #1 bestselling book Discovering the City of Sodom (Simon & Schuster/Howard Books 2013), co-authored with Dr. Latayne Scott.

Several years ago Dr. Collins told me his interest in the location of Sodom began in 1996.  Then, he was working on another excavation site but was also leading archeology tours in the Middle East.

It was on one of these trips that Prof. Collins began to question the traditional site of Sodom, what is known as the Southern Theory (attributing the site to the southern region of the Dead Sea).

Collins stated, “I began to read the text in Genesis 13-19, and realized that the traditional site did not align itself with the geographical profile described in the text.”

“Now let me say,” he continued, “that many scholars don’t have a high view of Scripture.  Some even frown upon using biblical texts as a tool for location designation.  Yet my philosophy is that the text is generally reliable and can—and should be—used, at bare minimum, as a basic guide for a geographical profile.”

“So when I read how the author of Genesis…

Christians in Politics urge believers to not shout from the sidelines

Following two pilot events in May, Christians in Politics (CiPol) will be travelling around the UK later this year to encourage believers to channel their enthusiasm for societal change into action.

CiPol are a non-affiliated political charity who work with Christians in parliament and beyond to disagree well and put ‘Kingdom before tribe’.

This latest idea to tour the country was explained on Premier’s News Hour by Executive Director Andy Flannagan.

He said churches can fall into the trap of not thinking politics is for them: “Often we’re [Christians] doing that classic thing of being the paramedic, being those who provide the emergency services, we’re treating the victims of a sick system but not necessarily speaking truth and justice and righteousness to the system itself”.

The Influence tour will involve showing Christians the biblical call to be engaged with public life and provide opportunities for those who are considering politics to speak to Christians in the field.

He explained that many people don’t realise that the outreach they do at church puts them in a valuable position to be a Christian voice in politics: “So often the focus in politics is the soap opera of Westminster.

“We’re trying to encourage those folks who are already involved in doing that work that often they are best placed to represent their communities.”

The tour is a week in November 2018…

Supreme Court Nominee Kavanaugh Calls Roe v. Wade ‘Settled Law,’ but What Does That Mean?

Supreme Court Nominee Kavanaugh Calls Roe v. Wade ‘Settled Law,’ but What Does That Mean?

Republican Sen. Susan Collins says Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh called Roe v. Wade “settled law” in a private meeting with her, but pro-choice activists and Democratic leaders greeted the news with skepticism.

The exchange between Collins and Kavanaugh – who was nominated by President Trump in June – came in a meeting in which they discussed several issues, including the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

“We talked about whether he considered Roe to be settled law,” Collins told reporters, according to NPR. “He said that he agreed with what Justice Roberts said at his nomination hearing, at which he said that it was settled law.”

Chief Justice John Roberts, during his 2005 confirmation hearing, said Roe was “settled as a precedent of the court, entitled to respect under principles of stare decisis.”

Unlike lower courts, the Supreme Court is not bound by precedent – a fact that Democrats noted. They also pointed out that Kavanaugh has not praised Roe, either.

“Let’s be clear: This is not as simple as Judge Kavanaugh saying that Roe is settled law,” said Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “Everything the Supreme Court decides is settled law until it unsettles it. Saying a case is settled law is not the same thing as saying a case was correctly decided.”

The American Civil…

Undocumented Immigrant Arrested for the Suspected Murder of Iowa College Student

Undocumented Immigrant Arrested for the Suspected Murder of Iowa College Student

Police found what they believe to be the body of Mollie Tibbetts, the 20-year-old college student who went missing in July.

The body was found in a field southeast of Brooklyn, Iowa.

“The identity has not been confirmed, however, we believe it to be the body of Mollie Tibbetts,” said Rick Rahn, a special agent of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

A 24-year-old undocumented immigrant has been charged with first-degree murder in the case. He has been identified as Cristhian Bahena Rivera. He lives in rural Poweshiek County. According to The New York Times, Rivera was from Mexico.

“You heard about today with the illegal alien coming in, very sadly from Mexico, and you saw what happened to that incredible, beautiful young woman,” said President Donald Trump. “It should’ve never happened. Illegally in our country. We’ve had a huge impact, but the laws are so bad, the immigration laws are such a disgrace.”

Tibbetts went missing on July 18 after going for a run. Police have not released the cause of death. An autopsy is set for Wednesday.

Police later reviewed security video footage that showed Rivera’s car. The video also shows Tibbets running near Boundary and Middle Streets when a dark-colored Chevy Malibu appears and drives back and forth.

Rivera told police he pursued a woman running in the area and then parked his car…
