Pro-LGBT United Methodists Divided Over Bishops-Supported Plan to Avoid Church Split Over Homosexuality

LGBT advocates who are members of the United Methodist Church have expressed divided opinions on a proposal supported by denominational leadership to prevent a split over the homosexuality debate.

In May, the UMC Council of Bishops expressed support for the “One Church Plan,” a proposal meant to prevent a liberal-conservative split within the mainline denomination over its stance against homosexuality.

This plan involves changing the Book of Discipline to remove language labeling homosexuality “incompatible with Christian teaching,” allowing churches in the United States to permit same-sex weddings and gay ordination while letting clergy and some overseas conferences retain their official opposition.

Reconciling Ministries Network, an LGBT advocacy group, has expressed mixed opinion about the One Church Plan.

RMN Executive Director Jan Lawrence wrote in a blog entry last week that she believed the plan “has the potential to reduce harm,” she also felt that it was “far from the…

Prayers for Zimbabwe as election violence continues

Three people have been killed in protests since the results showed the ruling Zanu-PF party picked up the most votes.

Opposition supporters claim the election was rigged and have clashed with police.

Rev Dr Kenneth Mtata, general secretary of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches told Premier’s News Hour how we can stand with his country.

“We need to continue to pray for peace and the Zimbabwe Council of Churches needs to make sure that where we are preparing spaces for dialogue at secure spaces – we need to make sure that we can respond quickly to people who may have been hurt.”

Zimbabwe’s ruling party has told the opposition that “we should all lose graciously” as presidential election results are set to be announced.

Zanu-PF spokesman Paul Mangwana said opposition supporters were responsible for Wednesday’s deadly violence in the capital Harare in which the military swept in with gunfire to disperse protests over alleged rigging in Monday’s vote.

He said that “it is not entirely true protesters were not armed”.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said his government was in touch with main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa in an attempt to ease tensions, hours after he accused the opposition of inciting it.

But Mr Chamisa said he had not received any communication from the president and criticised the “violent government”.

He called…

Kathie Lee Gifford Opens Up about Being a Widow

Kathie Lee Gifford Opens Up about Being a Widow

Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford were married for 29 years before he passed away in 2015 at the age of 84. It was a Sunday morning, and Kathie Lee found him on the floor of the home that they shared together. The talk show host has always been open about her loss and how she continues to heal each day. Here’s Kathie Lee on being a widow, and why she won’t let that define her.

It’s no secret that Frank was significantly older than Kathie Lee by 23 years. Kathie reflects on this with such humor as she recalls her parents’ first impression of Frank! “They were hesitant. [He was] 23 years older… been married twice before… already a grandfather… It didn’t look right on paper–that’s for sure! But you know what? My first one looked perfect on paper, and it was a disaster!” Kathie Lee shared. She goes on to say that her parents immediately loved Frank, and joked that they were the same age–that they were peers.

Now, as the 3-year anniversary of his death nears, Kathie Lee is reflecting on life as a widow. “You have a moment where you just accept that you are a widow. It looks weird to you for the longest time. You don’t define yourself that way.” Kathie Lee shares that on the one-year anniversary of Frank’s passing, she moved her wedding ring from her left hand to her right. That was the moment that she was ready to not be defined by her husband’s death.

It’s obvious that the…

U.S. Sanctions Turkish Officials to Protest American Pastor’s Detention

U.S. Sanctions Turkish Officials to Protest American Pastor’s Detention

The Trump administration has sanctioned two high-level officials in Turkey for what it says is their role in the case of U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson, who faces terrorism-related charges.

“At the president’s direction, the Department of Treasury is sanctioning Turkey’s minister of justice and minister of the interior, both of whom played leading roles in the arrest and detention of Pastor Brunson,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced at her press briefing Wednesday (Aug. 1).

Under the sanctions, any assets the Turkish officials have in the U.S. will be frozen. American individuals and businesses are barred from having financial transactions with them.

Open Heavens 3 August 2018 – Divine Set-up

Topic: Divine Set-up [Open Heavens 3 August 2018 Friday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?”- 1 Samuel 10:1

Read: 1 Samuel 9:15-10:1 (KJV)

15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.

19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?

21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

1 Samuel 10:1: Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

Bible in One Year: Job 1-4, Matthew 13:1-23

Open Heavens 3 August 2018 MESSAGE:

The ways of our God are unsearchable and beyond human comprehension (Romans 11:33). You need to understand this if not you will miss out on the good things the Lord has in store for His children. Using natural methods to search out or predict the plans of God is not just counterproductive, it also leads to frustration. This is why Romans 8:5-6 says:

“5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

Anyone who tries to box God into a pattern will definitely miss His visitation when it happens. In Genesis 18:1-16, when the guest from heaven seems to be passing by Abraham’s tent, little did he know it was a divine set up for him to be blessed. Thanks be to God that Abraham did not miss his blessing. His gesture of hospitality brought fulfilment of God’s promise which he had waited on for so many years. When the Lord asks you to do something unusual, He is only setting you up for an unusual miracle. In Joshua chapter 2, the visit of the two spies to Rahab was a divine set-up to make her an agent of salvation to her entire household. My prayer is that the grace to do the unusual that will bring the type of miracles nobody has ever experienced before will be given to you today in Jesus’ Name. Do you know that God’s commandments on paying of tithes, offering and first fruits was nothing but divine set-ups for superabundant blessings? When you get a taste of this, you will testify that the Lord is good indeed.

Today’s Bible reading narrates the story of a divine arrangement in favour of the first king of Israel, Saul. God wanted to anoint him king over Israel, so He caused his father’s donkeys to go missing. This made Saul go searching all over for them, till he got to Samuel the king-maker. Before Saul’s arrival at the place where Samuel was, the Lord had spoken to Samuel about his visit and instructed him to anoint Saul king over all Israel. Meanwhile unknown to Saul, while he and his Servant wandered around by divine set-up, the missing donkeys were already found. I pray for you today that the Lord would divinely set you up for promotion and breakthrough in life in Jesus’ Name. Where we cannot see a single way, God can see uncountable ways for carrying out His agenda. When the Lord was leading me to the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973 in search of peace in my life and home, little did I know it was for the purpose of fulfilling His own agenda for my life. If I had any hint then that I would become a pastor, maybe I would have sought spiritual help somewhere else, where I would not be considered for pastoral work. The Lord’s ways are indeed unsearchable!

Prayer Point: Father, please cause me to be sensitive to Your set-up for unusual breakthrough in my life, in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heavens 3 August 2018 Hymn 4: Trust and Obey

1. When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the alter we lay;
For the favor He shows,
For the joy He bestows,
Are from them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

UN tells Algeria to stop harassing Christians after church closures

The plea follows a number of churches and other religious institutions that have been closed down in recent months.

The UNHRC urged Algeria to “guarantee the full exercise of their freedom of thought, conscience and religion to all”.

It also said the Algerian government should “refrain from obstructing the religion of persons who do not observe the official religion, in particular by the means of destruction and closure of establishments or refusal to grant registration of religious movements”.

A total of six churches have been closed since November 2017 in the North African country. While three were later reopened – as well as a Christian bookshop and day-care centre for Christian children, dozens of churches have also received notifications ordering them to close.

World Watch Monitor

A new report by the World Evangelical Alliance submitted to the UNHRC in June, stated that the church closures were justified according to a 2006 ordinance, which states permission must be obtained before using a building for non-Muslim worship.

However, World Watch Monitor reports that authorities have failed to respond to almost all applications from churches for places of worship.

Pope alters Church’s position on death penalty

The Vatican said that Francis has changed the catechism of the Catholic Church – the compilation of official Catholic teaching.

Previously, the catechism said the church did not exclude recourse to capital punishment “if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor”.

The new teaching says the previous policy is outdated and that there are other ways to protect society.

It adds: “Consequently the church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.”

In an accompanying letter explaining the change, the head of the Vatican’s doctrine office said the development of Catholic doctrine on capital punishment did not contradict prior teaching, but rather was an evolution of it.

“If, in fact the political and social situation of the past made the death penalty an acceptable means for the protection of the common good, today the increasing understanding that the dignity of a person is not lost even after committing the most serious crimes,” said Cardinal Luis Ladaria, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Francis has for a long time criticised the death penalty, insisting it can never be justified, no matter how heinous the crime.

He has also…

Why are parents hiring “Fortnite” coaches for their kids?

Fortnite is an astounding cultural phenomenon. More than 125 million people play the online video game worldwide.

Are parents worried about the violence of the game or its addictive nature? For many, the answer is no. They’re worried that their kids are losing.

So, according to the Wall Street Journal, they’re hiring Fortnite coaches for their children. One contracting site has hired out more than 1,400 Fortnite coaches since last March.

One mother explains: “There’s pressure not to just play it but to be really good at it. You can imagine what that was like for him at school.”

A car that costs more than $4 million

A 1998 Mercedes-Benz will be auctioned by Sotheby’s on August 25. It comes with its original tool chest, owner’s manuals, spare keys, and first aid kit. The starting bid is a mere $4,250,000.

Why? The AMG CLK GTR is a street-legal version of a race car that was so successful in 1998, competitions were canceled the next year “due to lack of interest from Mercedes’ competitors.” The car being auctioned is one of only twenty-five ever built.

In a similar vein, a home in Georgetown is coming on the market for $22 million. The current owner bought the property in 2008 for $11.8 million. Its claim to fame: Ted Kennedy once lived there.

According to the Historical Society of Washington, DC, Kennedy and his first wife, Joan, rented the property sometime after his election to the Senate in the 1960s. Even though the senator moved to another home many years ago and died in 2009, the Georgetown property is still identified with him.

Speaking of prominent families, thieves stole two crowns and an orb from the Swedish royal family’s collection yesterday. The priceless artifacts were snatched at lunchtime from a cathedral an hour west of Stockholm. The criminals made their escape in a motorboat.

The items belonged to King Karl IX, who died in 1611, and his wife, Queen Kristina, who died in 1625. They are so valuable because they…
