Stopping disgraced bishop’s return to ministry would have been ‘ghastly’, retired judge claims

Lord Anthony Lloyd of Berwick said he remains friends with disgraced bishop Peter Ball, who was jailed in 2015 for sexually abusing 18 young men over 30 years.

The inquiry heard the former member of the House of Lords had written to various people including the chief constable of Gloucestershire Police and the Archbishop of Canterbury about Ball before his conviction.

Asked at the hearing in London on Friday why he had done so, he said he thought it “right” that people should know “what sort of man Peter Ball was”.

He said: “It was, as I think it is described somewhere, a perfectly straightforward letter intended really to show what sort of man he was.”

He earlier told the inquiry of his thoughts when he met Ball.

He said: “He had very remarkable gifts, great spiritual gifts. When he preached, people wanted to hear what he had to say and I liked him very much. We then became very good friends, and we still are.”

Ball resigned as bishop of Gloucester following his 1993 caution.

For Ball to have never returned to ministry following that would have been “a ghastly result”, Lord Lloyd said.

He told the inquiry: “You could not, as it were, if he resigned as the bishop of Gloucester, leave him with nothing to do, bearing in mind he was still a minister with the church. And to leave him with nothing to do, no decent employer would do that.”

Lord Lloyd insisted he had never…

Probe over Quaker charity donations to terror-linked group

According to the Times, the regulator is investigating the claim that the trust gave the funds to Teach Na Failte, which supports prisoners and ex-offenders but was also founded by the Irish Republican Socialist Party – the political wing of the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA).

The Charity Commission on Friday ordered the York-based trust to “explain and justify” why it gave funding to a group whose offices were raided this year by anti-terrorism police investigating sex-trafficking, violent intimidation and “paramilitary-style attacks”.

The INLA was formed in 1974 during the Northern Ireland conflict and has been linked with bombings and shootings in Northern Ireland and London, including the killing of shadow Northern Ireland secretary Airey Neave in Westminster in 1979.

The Times reported that the Rowntree charity has been giving money to the unregistered charity Teach na Failte since 2014.

A spokesperson for the Rowntree trust told the newspaper it “rejected all violence” and supports “equality, rights and reconciliation”. The spokesperson also defended providing funds to Teach na Failte because it was “committed to non-violence”.

They went on to describe Teach na Failte as a “support group for prisoners and ex-prisoners” who were associated with the INLA, which declared the end of its armed campaign back in 2009.

Should Churches Go Into Debt? — Art Rainer

Should churches go into debt? This question often elicits passionate responses from people at various points on the yes/no spectrum. The passion is often driven by a desire for their church to make the best decision to advance the gospel in their community and around the world. And this is a good thing.

3 Reasons Greeter Ministries Are Still Relevant in 2018 — Facts & Trends

You might be wondering if a greeter ministry is still relevant in 2018. Do we even need greeters any more? It’s a fair question. Shouldn’t we expect everyone in the church to be friendly to guests? Why do we have to ask people to do what they should be doing anyway? Perhaps in an ideal world with an ideal organization with ideal people such an approach would work. But that’s not our world, and that’s not our church. We, therefore, greatly need greeter ministries for three reasons.

11 Reasons Some Pastors Leave a Church Too SoonChuck Lawless

Last week, I posted two posts about pastors staying too long in a church (here and here). Today, I want to address the other side of the coin—pastors who leave a church too soon. In this case, I refer to anecdotal evidence gathered through the years by talking with pastors who themselves say they left a church too soon. Few pastors I know leave a church saying, “I know this is too early, but I’m leaving”; instead, they reach that conclusion after the fact.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 28 July 2018 Devotional — Think About Something Good

Topic: Think About Something Good [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Saturday July 28, 2018]

pray without ceasing, — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

One day I remember praying, “God, I can’t go on fighting my thoughts all day, every day. As soon as I capture these wrong thoughts, they come back. What am I supposed to do?” As you fight the battle in your mind, you may find yourself praying the same prayer, so I want to share with you the simple answer God gave me. He said all I needed to do was to think about something else!

When you think about something good, there is no room for wrong thoughts to get into your mind. Concentrating on trying to not think wrong thoughts can actually increase them, but simply filling your mind with good things leaves no room for bad things to get in.

The Bible says that if we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (see Gal. 5:16), and this simply means that if we concentrate on the things God desires, then we will not have room in our lives for what Satan desires.

This was a life-changing revelation for me. I realized I couldn’t wait for something good to just fall into my mind. I had to choose my thoughts on purpose. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 30:19 that God sets before us life and death, blessings and curses. If you and I do not choose thoughts that lead to life, the enemy will make the choice for us—and he will choose thoughts that lead to death. But when we choose thoughts that lead to life, our lives will be blessed.

Take time to roll good thoughts over and over in your mind and this will help you form the habit of thinking good things. You must believe you can do something or you won’t even try. So, I repeat: “You can choose your own thoughts!” You can “overcome (master) evil with good” (see Romans 12:21 AMPC).

Prayer Starter: Father, please help me to guard my thoughts today. Help me to think on things that will honor You and breathe life into my moods, attitudes and actions. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 28 July 2018 – A Great House (II)

TOPIC: A Great House (II) (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Saturday, 28 July 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 6:15-17

MEMORY VERSE: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”1 Corinthians 6:20

The MESSAGE:

The Bible says you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, a dwelling place of the Almighty God (1 Corinthians 6:19). Man is made up of body, soul and spirit. The soul of man, which consists of mind/heart, is a battlefield. Two forces are always contending with the mind. These are forces of God and of satan. The forces of darkness attack your mind with evil thoughts, imaginations and wickedness in order to pollute. If they are successful, hatred, bitterness and all unrighteousness will begin to manifest. If you have observed any of these in your life, you need to purge yourself of them. Beloved, purity or filthiness determines who dwells in your great house. If idolatry, adultery, fornication, prostitution, unrighteousness, alcoholism, gluttony are found in your great house, it becomes an abode of all evil spirits. Some have released their bodies to be a dwelling place for witchcraft spirit. Their presence in a place brings evil or causes havoc.

Who occupies your great house is a matter of choice. The choice you make determines the state of your heart. Have you made the right choice? Is your life a vessel of honour or dishonour? Whoever dwells in your great house is a function of who you have chosen (Joshua 24:14-24). Some of us allow anger, pride, lust, deception, stubbornness, cruelty and greed in our great house. God will not dwell in such house because it is not prepared for Him. Every child of God is expected to prepare His house for Him to dwell in by purging himself of every filthiness and clothing himself with holy living, righteousness, prayerfulness and the word of God. If you make the right choice, you will enjoy the presence of God always.

God is the good builder of your great house (Genesis 2:31). As the good builder, is God happy and pleased with the condition of your great house (body/life)? If the condition of your house is making God to bleed in His heart, then you need to repent and forsake your wicked ways. The content of your house may be the cause of hindrances to your miracles, breakthroughs and testimonies. If that is the case, you need to purge yourself with prayers and the word of God. The life of a Christian that is purged is sanctified, made a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1). The petition of a sanctified Christian commands the attention of heaven (Isaiah 30:19).

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
EVERY DAY BRINGS NEW CHOICES.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Darkness shall not rejoice over your life.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. O Lord, reveal to me every hindrance to my spiritual growth, in the name of Jesus.
2. You wicked power in my foundation that refuses to let me go, fall down and die, in the name of Jesus.
3. Every lawful bondage in my life, break, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. I command every bondage in my life to loose its hold, in the name of Jesus.
5. O Lord, let me experience Your kingdom in every department of my life, in the name of Jesus.
6. Holy Ghost fire, destroy every work of the flesh in my life, in the name of Jesus.
7. You my body, hear the word of the Lord and reject satanic command, in the name of Jesus.

Seeds of Destiny 28 July 2018 Daily Devotional – Living As A Generational Problem Solver

Topic: Living As A Generational Problem Solver [Seeds of Destiny 28 July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:14,16

Thought For The Day: The responsibility you handle today positions you for the possibilities, opportunities and authority you will experience tomorrow.

A major way to make the most of life is to live as a generational problem Solver.

Living as a generational problem solver involves deploying oneself to solving generational problems and challenges confronting society at large. A person’s life today is a seed for the harvest of tomorrow. The actions of today position a person for the manifestations of tomorrow.

David was a very good example of a generational problem solver. While his elder brothers were idling about, David tended the father’s flock in the wilderness. If David had refused to take charge of his father’s business, he would not have amounted to anything in life just like the rest of his siblings. If David was not interested in tending his father’s flock, probably, none of his brothers would have done it. He was the last born of the family who should have been pampered and protected by all but his brothers pushed him to the bush to face lions and bears. Despite that, he made up his mind to take the family’s responsibility as a child. That responsibility he took exposed him to the experience of killing the lion and the bear, and that was a stepping stone to killing Goliath.

There are many people who are handling the responsibilities that their elder ones are meant to handle. They handle things bigger than their age. My counsel is, do not complain because the responsibility you handle today positions you for the possibilities, opportunities and authority you will experience tomorrow.

So, what you do today for a family or a community qualifies you for what God would use you to do for a nation or nations tomorrow. Please deploy yourself to serving God and humanity as a generational problem solver.

Remember this: The responsibility you handle today positions you for the possibilities, opportunities and authority you will experience tomorrow.

Assignments:
1. Make up your mind to do what others neglect and avoid.
2. Deploy yourself as a generational problem solver.

Prayer: O Lord, I ask for the grace to do what others neglect and avoid. Help me to deploy myself as a generational problem solver, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

DCLM Daily Manna 28 July 2018 Daily Devotional – Go Up Higher

Topic: Go Up Higher [DCLM Daily Manna 28th July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Text: Exodus 24:12-18 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them” (Exodus 24:12).

MESSAGE:

There are things you cannot get from God, and heights of spiritual experiences you cannot attain when you remain at the same level of being satisfied, not motivated to seek extraordinary accomplishments. The things that endure are not picked from the soft cushion of pleasure and indulgence, but with the sheer force of grit and perseverance.

At the time in our text, Moses was about to receive the greatest message God has for man, the rules and regulations to moderate the conduct of men in all ages. It was too important that God could not hand it over to just anyone. Therefore, He singled out Moses. Moses embarked on this journey to the mountain with Joshua, but advisedly left him halfway, while he alone proceeded to the mountain. He stepped into the cloud-covered mountain and waited patiently until the seventh day when the Lord spoke to him. Down in the camp, the children of Israel only saw the glory of the Lord as a burning fire on top of the mountain. But to Moses, it was a soothing cloudy mist, and he remained there for the next forty days and nights.

God uses people who rise above the mundane things of life, in pursuit of heavenly riches, with unquenchable thirst and hunger for righteousness to achieve His aim. Their commitment and consecration is total, and not distracted by physical inconveniences. They rise above life’s conditions, conquer the pull and pressure of the flesh. Their major desire is to hear from the Lord. Are you one of such people?

Thought For The Day: God only enters into relationship with those that are willing.

Open Heavens 28 July 2018 – Are His Commandments Grievous?

Topic: Are His Commandments Grievous? [Open Heavens 28 July 2018 Saturday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” – 1 John 5:3

Read: Psalm 119:97-106 (KJV)

97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

Bible in One Year: Nehemiah 9, Matthew 9:27-10:15

Open Heavens 28 July 2018 MESSAGE:

We often need to remind ourselves of what it means to be born again so that we do not lose sight of who we are. To be born again means that the control of one’s life has been given or surrendered to Jesus Christ. From the moment a person makes this decision, the Lord Jesus Christ is meant to be in charge of his or her life. One of the important features of being born again is transformation, which is described in the Bible as putting on the new man (Ephesians 4:24, Colossians 3:10). This occurs through a process of continuously renewing the mind with the word of God (Romans 12:2). When a person becomes born again, he or she is a new creature, for whom old things are passed away and all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). The old things that have passed away include the old ways of thinking and acts that lead to disobedience. The old man, present in all of mankind, is disobedient by nature. This Adamic nature finds the instructions of God oppressive and can never submit to His authority. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says:

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

In contrast to the old Adamic nature, the mind of the new man is subject to the control and influence of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whenever the new man receives any instruction from God, it is joyfully obeyed-God’s commandments are not in any way burdensome to him. Indeed, the new man loves to obey God (1 John 5:3). However, to reassure our hearts that He is not in any way a taskmaster, Jesus in Matthew 11:30 said:

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Though these words and several others, we know that God’s motive behind every commandment is our own good. The system of the world is one of the main factors that make obeying God’s commandments seem difficult, but we thank God that the new man in us has overcome the world (1 john 5:4). True children of God find the world with all its trappings unattractive. Everything the world has to offer, in the form of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life, cannot dominate a child of God any more (Romans 6:14). Today’s Bible reading paints a perfect picture of the resultant effect of resolving to obey God’s commandments. The word of God suddenly becomes sweeter than honey. This leads us to hate falsehood and keeps us away from evil behavior. Obedience to the word of God gives superior understanding and divine wisdom. Having been taught by God Himself, we become wiser than our enemies. You will find it easy to obey God’s word henceforth in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please give me divine wisdom, and take me far above my enemies in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heavens 28 July 2018 Hymn 4: Trust And Obey.

1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Billy Graham 28th July 2018 Daily Devotional – Truth and Fiction

Topic: Truth and Fiction [Billy Graham’s Devotional Saturday July 28, 2018]

. . . make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. — Psalm 145:12

Some years ago I heard about a clergyman who had a friend who was an actor. The actor was drawing large crowds of people, and the clergyman was preaching to a few in the church. He said to his actor friend, “Why is it that you draw great crowds, and I have no audience at all? Your words are sheer fiction, and mine are unchangeable truth.” The actor’s reply was quite simple. “I present my fiction as though it were truth; you present your truth as though it were fiction.” I fear that so often we Christians give the idea that the truth is fiction by the way we live and by the lack of dedication to the teachings of our Lord.

Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus, I would completely yield my life to You, so that others may know that the Savior I love and serve is the truth!

Platt Promises Investigation into IMB’s Handling of Alleged Abuse

Platt Promises Investigation into IMB’s Handling of Alleged Abuse

David Platt, president of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, has ordered an investigation of IMB’s “handling of past actions” with sexual abuse.

Platt’s announcement comes after a Southern Baptist leader, Mark Aderholt, was arrested and charged with sexual abuse crimes against a child.

In 2007, Anne Marie Miller reported that Aderholt had sexually abused her. The IMB investigated the allegation of Aderholt, who was also an IMB missionary. The IMB agreed with Miller, but they did not fire Aderholt and did not report the crime to police.

According to Baptist News Global, Miller was 16 at the time. Aderholt was 25 and working as a youth pastor.

This summer, Aderholt was arrested after Miller reported the incident to police.

Platt said the situation was “extremely disturbing.”

“I am commencing a thorough, outside, independent examination of IMB’s handling of past actions—including this case and any other similar situations,” he said in a statement.

“In addition, I am commencing a thorough, outside, independent examination of IMB’s present policies and practices to ensure that our current commitment to zero tolerance for child abuse, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment is completely and consistently enforced across IMB today.”

Miller also issued a statement, saying she was “grateful” to Platt for…
