Fisherman Describes Rescuing People From Greek Wildfires – Urban Christian News

The cries for help pierced the choking smoke. Dozens of people bobbed in the sea, forced by the vicious flames into the water. Children held onto adults, and people who couldn’t swim clung to those who could.

That was the scene confronting Tawefik Halil and other fishermen responding to the overwhelmed Greek coast guard’s urgent call for help as the deadliest wildfires in decades raged through seaside resorts near Athens.

The 42-year-old Halil was among dozens of volunteers who helped save hundreds of people stranded on beaches and in the choppy waters, buffeted by gale-force winds.

“It was chaos, do you understand? Do you know what it’s like to be in all that smoke, not being able to see anything and to have people asking for help?” Halil told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The fire razed holiday resorts east of Athens and killed at least 81 people. But more than 700 survivors were rescued by boat and taken to the port of Rafina through the night early Tuesday.

Halil said he doesn’t remember how many people he helped save, but he and the others did what they could as they plucked young and old from the water.

Drone footage overlooking properties and land in Mati and Neos Voutzas showed the extent of damage to the area in the aftermath deadly wildfires in Greece that killed at least 79 people and sending thousands fleeing. (July 25)

“You can’t see anything in the smoke and fire — so much fire and so much smoke. There was so much wind,” he said. “We could not breathe. I almost fainted at some point from all the smoke, and it was very difficult, my…

(Photo: REUTERS/BRENDAN MCDERMID)The trademark logo of Twitter that was displayed on a screen at the New York Stock Exchange.

A Rhode Island Catholic bishop has officially closed his Twitter account, stating in his final post on the popular social media site that he considers it “an occasion of sin.”

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, head of the Diocese of Providence, posted his final tweet on Monday before closing his Twitter account.

“A final tweet. Sadly, Twitter has become a major distraction for me, on good days and bad, an obstacle to my spiritual life, an occasion of sin for me and others,” stated Bishop Tobin, as quoted by CRUX. “So, good-bye. If I’ve offended anyone, I’m truly sorry. If I’ve helped anyone along the way, thank God.”

Tobin’s decision to quit Twitter came days after he garnered much criticism over a tweet dated July 19 in response to the latest sex abuse revelations about Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Open Heavens 26 July 2018 – Father Christmas Or Giver?

Topic: Father Christmas Or Giver? [Open Heavens 26 July 2018 Thursday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.”Luke 15:14

Read: Luke 15:11-16 (KJV)

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

Bible in One Year: Nehemiah 4-6, Matthew 8:18-9:8

Open Heavens 26 July 2018 MESSAGE:

A giver is a person who gives generously to the poor and needy in obedience to the word of God. A giver makes it a point of duty to pay his or her first fruits and tithes, gives offerings and also makes other necessary financial contributions to his or her local church. Meanwhile, a “Father Christmas” is a term used in some parlance to describe an extravagant spender: one who unnecessarily spends a lot of money that he or she cannot afford. A Father Christmas is often typified by exaggerated, excessive or immoderate behavior and wastefulness which may result in personal harm. Blessings are like talents entrusted to our care by God. He has called us to be givers and wise stewards of His investments in us. God frowns at any form of wasteful or extravagant behavior in His children. The word of God guides our attention towards the right kind of open-handedness and generosity of spirit, which reflects love and worship towards God by showing concern for the poor and the less privileged in our society (Proverb 18:17). I pray that God will bless you so much that you will become a source of blessing to your generation in Jesus’ Name.

The Bible provides us with some examples of sinful extravagance or wastefulness. A good example is found in our Bible text, where the prodigal son gathered all his inheritance together and left for a far country where he wasted all he had through extravagant spending. In Philippians 3:19, the Holy Spirit admonishes us that those who mind earthly things, whose god is their belly, will end up in destruction. Proverbs 6:26 further tells us that those who lavish their hard-earned money on strange women and cheap girls will eventually become diminished to the value of a piece of bread. Extravagant or wasteful spending usually leads to poverty. This is what happened to the prodigal son. After he had squandered all his inheritance, he had to take up employment in the worst kind of job in order to survive. I pray that you will never commit any error that will turn your life upside down again in the Name of Jesus.

Extravagant and wasteful spending is no substitute for doing what God requires of you (1 Samuel 15:22, Micah 6:7-8). Without any doubt, God is more interested in Christians who are determined to do their best to meet His requirement of holiness and righteous living. The extravagant spending of an unrepentant sinner in the house of God is at best viewed as an attempt to bribe God, and this is abomination to him (Proverbs 21:17).

Prayer Point: Father, please let my love offering always be acceptable in Your sight in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heavens 26 July 2018 Hymn 4: Trust And Obey

1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Some Uber Riders Are Paying High Fees in ‘Vomit Fraud’ Scam

(Photo: Unsplash/Victor Xok)A new scam is causing Uber passengers to be charged extra for messes they did not make

Uber riders could be on the receiving end of a higher-than-expected bill, and the reason for it could be a scam that’s starting to get more publicity.

At first, Uber passengers will likely not even be aware that they’re about to be victimized by the scam, known as “vomit fraud.”

It’s only when the ride ends that the trouble begins.

Riders who’ve experienced the scam said they received a message from Uber regarding an “adjustment” that needs to be made to their bill, the Miami Herald reports.

The adjustment is actually an additional charge that customers are expected to pay because they supposedly caused a mess in the vehicle they rode in.

Upon being contacted by a customer, Uber will even show pictures sent by the driver as evidence of the alleged mess left in the vehicle after the ride.

Vomiting or spilled drinks remaining in the car after the ride could lead to an additional $80 being tacked onto the passenger’s bill. The extra charge could climb all the way up to $150 if Uber deems the damage to be “significant.”

According to the Miami Herald, several Uber riders have already come forward and told el Nuevo Herald that they were victimized by this scam.

Resolving the dispute can take a long time. Several emails might have to be sent and Uber will have to be convinced to side with the customer as well after an investigation is conducted.

It’s unclear how long it typically takes an issue to be resolved.

Incidences of this scam affecting Uber customers have been reported for years…

Seeds of Destiny 26 July 2018 Daily Devotional – Understanding Quality Relationship

Topic: Understanding Quality Relationship [Seeds of Destiny 26 July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Matthew 9:36

Thought For The Day: What you do not work on does not work out; what you do not work at can never work out.

Yesterday, we saw the need for quality relationship in fulfilling a quality destiny. We saw that to take people for granted is to take one’s future for granted.

Today, we shall look at what quality relationship is.
Now, what is quality relationship?
1. It is a life of accommodation and affection for others
It is living to create accommodation and allowance for other people in your life. It is the life that is not locked up in self but open in affection and care for others.

2. It is a life of positive profitable network of relationships
If your life is to be an interesting life, you must be interested in the lives of others. Let no one hang around you unhappy and you do not care. Do not allow your spouse to be around you in pains and you are not aware.

Work at a quality relationship. What you do not work on does not work out; what you do not work at can never work out. When you do not talk to your spouse or reassure one another continually, a crash is imminent in your relationship. And if the hedge of the family is broken by lack of communication, all manner of satanic agenda will creep in.

My counsel is, live a life that values and maintains relationships. Call those who need to be called; assist those who need financial assistance within your capacity; reassure and encourage with the Word of God, those who need reassurance and encouragement.

Remember this: What you do not work on does not work out; what you do not work at can never work out.

Assignments:
1. Create accommodation and affection for others in your life.
2. Build a network of positive and profitable relationships.

Prayer: O Lord, I ask for the grace to have accommodation and affection for people in my life. I receive help to build a network of positive and profitable relationships, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Andrew Wommack 26th July 2018 Daily Devotional – Hard Knocks or God’s Word

Topic: Hard Knocks or God’s Word [Andrew Wommack 26th July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Luke 15:17 “And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!”

Text: Luke 15:11-17

God’s Word makes it clear that the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). Romans 1:18-20 reveals that even those who don’t know God’s Word have an intuitive knowledge of right and wrong and God’s judgment against sin.

Therefore, for anyone to live in sin, as depicted by this prodigal son, they have to be deceived. This is exactly what the Bible says is the case in 2 Corinthians 4:4. When Jesus said, “he came to himself,” He was referring to the deception being removed and the son’s spiritual eyes being opened.

Like this story of the prodigal, tragedy often brings people out of deception and back to their senses. It’s not that God sends the tragedy. God spoke through the prophet Jeremiah, “Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee” (Jer. 4:18). However, tragic situations do clearly illustrate that “it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jer. 10:23), and they cause us to look somewhere else for help. Although turning to God is always beneficial, regardless of what provides the motivation, “hard knocks” are not the best teacher.

Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” God’s Word was given for reproof and correction and if we will submit to it, we can “be perfect, thoroughly furnished” without having to experience tragedy first.

Pastor Andrew Brunson Released from Prison in Turkey, Under House Arrest

Pastor Andrew Brunson Released from Prison in Turkey, Under House Arrest

North Carolina pastor, Andrew Brunson, has been released from prison in Turkey, following his recent hearing. He is currently under house arrest in the country.

Just last week, Brunson had a hearing for his October 2016 sentencing in Turkey. He was accused of having connections to a terrorist organization that attempted a coup against the Turkish government in July of 2016. Though Brunson’s witness and defense strongly denied allegations, asserting he has no connection to these terrorists, the hearing ended with a continuation scheduled for this Fall.

Following a speech from Brunson’s daughter for his release and amid reports from U.S. officials and the Brunson family of the pastor’s poor health, a Turkish court granted his release, on the condition that Brunson does not leave the country or his home. “The court reportedly came to the conclusion that Brunson could be effectively detained under house arrest,” the Christian Post writes.

The American Center for Law and Justice Chief Counsel, Jay Sekulow, cites President Donald Trump as a major help in this effort: “The president has played a critical role in securing the freedom of Pastor Brunson. We have worked closely with the president on this matter and are grateful for his efforts,” Sekulow shared on Twitter, “We look forward to the ultimate release of Pastor Brunson.”

Billy Graham 26th July 2018 Daily Devotional – The End of Life

Topic: The End of Life [Billy Graham’s Devotional Thursday July 26, 2018]

. . . willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. — 2 Corinthians 5:8

A little boy was riding alone on a train on a hot day when the travelers were extremely uncomfortable; and the scenery was not too interesting as they passed through the desert of Arizona. A lady sitting beside the boy asked him, “Are you tired of the long ride?” The little boy smiled and said, “I’m a little tired, but I don’t mind it much. You see, my father is going to meet me when I get to Los Angeles.” Sometimes we get a little tired of the burdens of life, but it is exhilarating to know that Jesus Christ will meet us at the end of life’s journey. The joy of being with Him forever is beyond the ability of any writer to describe.

Prayer for the day: To think You will be waiting for me at the end of this earthly journey! I am filled with unspeakable joy, Lord Jesus.
