If I Could Change One Thing in My Church, It Would Be . . .

I put the statement on social media. The responses were voluminous. After a couple of days, I had to stop counting and tally the results. There were hundreds of them.

In an effort to simplify my reporting of the results, I put the responses into several categories. I have to say, I was more encouraged than not. Sure, we got the usual complaints about other people and the worship services. But I was surprised to see how many respondents said the greatest change needed to be themselves. Pastors said it. Elders said it. Deacons said it. Other laypersons said it. That response, among others, greatly encouraged me.

My question was about one thing, so I had to disregard those who gave two things, or three things, or fourteen things (seriously). Keep in mind, each tallied respondent could only say one thing. So, when you read that three percent wanted a greater emphasis on prayer, it doesn’t mean 97 percent did not want a greater emphasis on prayer. It just means three percent put it at the top of their list.

Here are the top ten results. The numbers do not add to 100 percent, because there were many responses that did not fit any of the top ten categories.

If I could change one thing in my church, it would be . . .

  1. Other people (16%). No big surprise here. Other people need to get their acts together. The pastor needs to visit more. Other people need to attend more frequently. The essence of these responses is that everyone else is the problem.

Christian MP Ian Paisley suspended over undeclared luxury holidays

The North Antrim MP will also be excluded from the House of Commons for 30 sitting days from 4th September following a major breach of parliamentary rules.

Electoral authorities in Northern Ireland are to begin drawing up measures which could see him face a by-election if enough constituents demand it.

 

He has vowed to fight for his seat if he faces the electorate over his failure to declare two luxury family holidays paid for by the Sri Lankan government.

In March 2014, the senior Democratic Unionist lobbied against a proposed United Nations resolution to investigate alleged human rights abuses during a civil war on the Indian Ocean island without citing his financial benefits.

If 10% of his constituents sign a petition, an election will be called.

Sir Kevin Barron MP, chairman of the Commons Committee on Standards, said: “We concluded that Mr Paisley had committed serious misconduct and that his actions were of a nature to bring the House of Commons into disrepute, which is a further breach of the code of conduct.

“Because we regard this as an especially serious case, we have recommended that Mr Paisley be suspended from the service of the House for a period of 30 sitting days, starting on the fourth of September.”

A DUP statement said it took the matter very seriously.

One of the most valuable and beautiful things we can do is love others. We can purpose to think about the good things we find in all the people we know, and as we do, our attitudes toward them will improve.

Often we think about what is wrong with people and what we don’t like about them. Focusing on people’s faults is not showing love to them. We can choose to pray for them concerning any weaknesses they may have, and at the same time pray for ourselves that God will help us in our weaknesses also.

Focus on positive, loving thoughts about people. Then, when they do something you don’t like, you are already so full of good thoughts about them, it is easy to just let it go.

Prayer Starter: Father, please help me to think positive, loving thoughts about other people today. Help me to be patient, merciful, and always believe the best. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Death Count in Greek Wildfires Climbs to 74 In Deadliest Blazes In Decades – Urban Christian News

The death toll from Greece’s deadliest wildfires in decades climbed to 74 Tuesday as rescue crews searched on land and sea for those who sought to escape the blazes that engulfed popular summer resort spots near Athens.

The number of victims appeared set to go even higher, with crews checking charred homes and vehicles and the coast guard scouring beaches and deeper waters. There was no definitive count of the missing.

Fueled by 80 kph (50 mph) winds that frequently changed direction, the fires — one to the west of Athens near the town of Kineta and another to the northeast near the port of Rafina — spread at speeds that surprised many, trapping hundreds on beaches and cutting off escape routes.

All the casualties appeared to be from the fire near Rafina, a popular seaside area that is a mix of permanent residences and vacation homes. The blaze broke out Monday afternoon during a hot, dry spell but the cause was not immediately clear. Aerial photos showed charred swathes of forest and homes.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared three days of national mourning. Apart from the dead, which included children, hospitals treated 187 people, most for burns, with 10 listed in serious condition.

Huge areas of forest have been scorched or turned to ash by wildfires raging near Athens, Greece. At least 50 people have died in the deadly fires still burning in the Kineta and Mati areas. (July 24)

Although it had abated by Tuesday afternoon, the blaze was far from extinguished and more than 230 firefighters were still trying to put it out, helped by volunteers and water-dropping…

The MESSAGE:

There are many offers that come to children of God to ensnare them and put them in bondage. Such offers are meant to be rejected though they may appear juicy. Some of those offers may be presented where you work or live as a free gift and a lifetime opportunity. My friend, you are expected to reject them because they are scotched egg with life scorpion in it. Once you gullibly accept it and bite it, the scorpion will sting your mouth and inject its deadly venom. I believe you know what will be the result.

Joseph, as a house help to Portiphar’s house, was given deadly offer that could destroy the plan of God for his life by his master’s wife. Mrs. Portiphar wanted Joseph to lie with her; that is, to commit sexual immorality with her. Joseph refused the offer. Do you think it was easy for Joseph to say ‘No’ to his master’s most beautiful wife’s offer? Child of God, in sincerity, it was not easy. It took the grace of God and a lot of self-discipline on the part of Joseph, the young house help. The Bible talks about Daniel who purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself. It was because he understood the trick of the devil and the principle of God. Many people like Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, will never miss such opportunity of free gift without realizing the danger attached to it.

In the world today, there are different attractive offers, proposals, advances and invitations from unbelievers, old and young alike into drug pushing, vandalism, initiation to secret societies, sexual perversions, drinking of alcohol, hooliganism, body tattoo, internet fraud etc. A large number of our young and adult members of the society engage in some, if not in all of these because they do not know how to refuse or reject the offers the way young Joseph did. Why? They lack what would make them say No: The fear of God and self-control. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:22, “Flee from all appearances of evil” and in James 4:7 “…resist the devil and he will flee from you.” You need the Holy Spirit in your life to teach and remind you all things (John 14:26). For you not to fall into the error of eternal damnation, you need the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life (Galatians 5:16). You also need to abide in Christ and let Christ abide in you so as to live a victorious Christian life (John 15:4-5)

Dear Reader,

I welcome you to another exciting time in God’s presence. The first week I started this teaching, I taught on the place of rest. I said when you come to Jesus, you have rest. Last week, I also taught on rest in time of unrest. Today, we shall be looking at the topic: Relaxing at Home.

The peace of God is what brings about relaxation. When you are peaceful, you can be said to be relaxed. God is the author of peace. He is not a partial God; He will give you when you ask Him and if you allow Him to be the Lord of your life. His Word says: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).

Too many people are going through one form of tension and stress or the other at home, work, with their spouses or children. And life doesn’t seem to be treating them well. For such people, relaxation is like an impossible task. In this “age of anxiety,” where humanity is threatened with nuclear bombs, natural disaster, incurable diseases and uncertainty, everyone is looking for one type of escape or the other. Those experiencing family pressures may turn to drugs, while others opt for money making: Others may find solace in another wife, thinking that would offer a solution. Children are not left out. Some may join bad gangs with their peers, while relations seek diabolical solutions. In a bid to rid themselves of their burdens, they end up compounding them. But despite all these, the Word of God says: These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

With all these seeming escape routes, many are still left empty, unfulfilled and finally worse-off than before. Everywhere, people are looking for something to relax their nerves from a world of stress, tension and pressures. Countless people and even Christians, after their salvation experience, carry burdens and go through life with yokes around them. This just goes to show that there is no permanent solution for man in those seeming escape routes. It is possible however, to live above the regions of pressure and stress.

Anyone who is experiencing turbulence in the home, can enjoy peace and rest at home by discovering the solution the Word of God offers to troubled homes and obeying His instructions. It may not look like the solution, but God is a marriage expert. He ordained and instituted the family unit and knows how best to make it work. Just by following instructions, my home and family is a place to relax. Pressure can’t find its way in, stress is non-existent and tension can’t survive there. God has made it a place of peace for all the family members and me. Yours can be the same too, if you can practise what it takes.

I don’t know the kind of burden you have been carrying about, but today, as you continue to read God’s Word, it will show you what to do in order to live stress-free. You can relax at home! If you are willing to do what it takes, God’s presence will be with you even where you are now. You agree with His Word and He will take every burden off your life, and every yoke off your shoulder. The Bible says:

COME unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 emphasis mine).

If you are tired of being burdened at home and you need to relax, Jesus Christ says, “Come”. Imagine a man running a race with a bag of cement on his head. He wants to win but the weight on his head is a hindrance. This illustrates what many families are experiencing. Burdens, weights, cares and worries have robbed them of reaching that goal of a peaceful home. I want you to know that absence of peace in the family does not make for relaxation. Relax yourself in the arms of the Lord Jesus and lay your burdens at His feet. Until you do that, you can’t lay hold on the rest that God has for you.

No one else can carry your burden except the Lord Jesus. It doesn’t matter what the burden is, whether it is bad examination results, financial hardship, or childlessness, Jesus says, “Come unto me…and I will give you rest”.I am determined, set and ready to give you rest if only you will let me.” You have a duty to perform by coming to Jesus. The Bible describes Jesus Christ as “The Word of God” (Revelation19:13). Therefore, coming to Jesus simply means coming to the Word of God as the final solution to every problem. Look at this sister’s testimony:

“My marriage technically broke down on the wedding day, at the reception table! But I stayed on in it for almost a decade. It was a thorn in the flesh. Eventually, I had to leave. Right inside my matrimonial home, I got a SAN to prosecute the divorce.

I got born again after then, but the Word never came to me till I heard in the church a teaching on forgiveness, which made me realise that I had been living in self-righteousness all along. I forgive, but don’t forget. I got this corrected in my mind and through the anointed book, Marriage Covenant, through anointed preaching of the men of God and anointed counselling, my marriage got miraculously healed and right now, I’m having a honeymoon.” (Olaleye)

There is hope for your home! Someone said talking with God is the prescription for anxiety. As you communicate to the Lord and He communicates to you through His Word, tension and worry will be a thing of the past. With the exit of tension and stress, your home will be a place to return to and relax after the day’s work or activities. To have a home of relaxation, you have to get connected to God by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

TREM 25 July 2018 Daily Devotional – Christ Is All You Need

Topic: Christ Is All You Need [TREM 25 July 2018 Daily Devotional]

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” Hebrew 11:6 (KJV)

As I was looking at today’s text, I began to ask the Lord what does “He is” mean. Why doesn’t the scripture say “He has”? Rather it says “He is”. God said He doesn’t have because if He has to have then He is not God. It is we humans who have. It is created beings that have things. God doesn’t have, “He is”. It therefore means He is whatever you will ever need. So, what you need, He is!

When you receive Christ as your Saviour and Lord, He is everything you need. Often, we seek healing or prosperity when we should seek Him. When you have Him, He is the Healer. When you have Him, He is prosperity! He is power! He is life! He is light and illumination. When you have Him, every other thing is settled. You can’t have Him and not have healing, because He is healing and the life in Him will swallow up sickness. If the same Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus dwells in you, that same Spirit shall make your body alive and eat up the disease. His Spirit in you will eat up cancer. His Spirit will eat up diabetes. Having Him changes everything. How can you have life and die prematurely? How can you fail when you have Him? Whosoever comes to Him must believe that He is! He is all you need!

He said to Moses you want to know my name? I AM, that is who I AM. So, His name is “He is”. Child of God when you gave your life to Christ all your needs were met. All you need to do is feed on Him. Feeding on Him will change your prayer life. It will change your perspective. As a matter of fact, you will find it difficult to miss anything. I decree no more lack in your life.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being. Ephesians 3:16

A college professor of mine, picking up on my perfectionism-induced procrastination, gave me some wise advice. “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good,” he said, explaining that striving for perfect performance can prevent the risks necessary for growth. Accepting that my work would always be imperfect would give me the freedom to keep growing.

The apostle Paul explained an even more profound reason to let go of our own efforts to perfect ourselves: it can blind us to our need for Christ.

Paul had learned this the hard way. After years striving to perfectly obey God’s law, encountering Jesus changed everything (Galatians 1:11–16). Paul realized that if his own efforts were enough to be whole and right with God, “then there was no need for Christ to die” (2:21 nlt). Only by letting go of—dying to—self-reliance, could he experience Jesus living in him (v. 20). Only in his imperfection could he experience God’s perfect power.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t resist sin (v. 17); but it does mean we should stop relying on our own strength to grow spiritually (v. 20).

In this lifetime, we will always be works in progress. But as our hearts humbly accept our constant need for the only perfect One, Jesus makes His home there (Ephesians 3:17). Rooted in Him, we are free to grow ever deeper in the love “too great” to ever “understand fully” (v. 19 nlt).

Prayer: Lord, so often we exchange the joy and freedom of life with You for the burden of relying on ourselves. Help us to humbly rely on You instead.

We are free to grow in Jesus’s love.

Text: Matthew 18:1-14 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3).

MESSAGE:

The gulf between the carnal man and the converted soul is wide. A diligent pursuit of eternal Kingdom principles is superior to an unprofitable push for temporal worldly standards.

Jesus reveals the difference between those who feed on His Word and those who rest on secular doctrines that contemn servanthood and humility. When His disciples approached Him to know what constituted greatness and who was qualified to be the greatest in the Kingdom, He rested the question by saying the answer lay in humble service. In His Kingdom, one must have the submissive spirit of a child to be considered worthy of leadership. He re-echoed Proverbs 15:33 that, “Before honour is humility”.

Only a converted soul can enjoy this virtue. It is not acquired by an outward work of the flesh. It comes after genuine penitence and pardon for sin, followed by grace to serve selflessly without murmuring in the face of offences, trials, temptations and persecutions. Serious threats to one’s attachment to Christ like family links, social status, jobs, etc. must not make one compromise the stand on holiness.

However, punishment awaits those who exploit and hurt Christians because of their humility and dedication to Kingdom instructions. Such is God’s love for His sheep that He will not allow His children to perish in the world as long as they stay in His fold. The Lord also makes a pronouncement on those who honour His servants. Conversely, those who reject His disciples reject the Lord and His Kingdom.

Thought For The Day: Unconditional service is the condition for leadership in God’s kingdom.

Thought For The Day: To take people for granted is to take the future for granted.

Relationship with others is one vital factor for success and destiny fulfilment. To make the most of life therefore necessitates the need for quality relationship with others. That is why the quality of people in your life determines the quality of your destiny.

Now, having quality relationship does not necessarily refer to having rich, great or influential people in society as friends, rather, it is having people that you can count on and also people who can count on you. When relationship is centred on self, people are disconnected from the realities of life.

Let me give you two facts on quality relationship:
1. The most important relationships of your life determine the degree of your true success on earth
A person is successful by how successful his relationship is with the people around him. The quality of people in your life affects what you will become in life. This includes the people above, below, or around you from whom you are learning and who are learning from you.

2. Having quality people in life is superior to having high income
Having quality people in life is superior to having high income because people will do for you what money cannot do for you. The person who has quality people in his life without much money is better off than the person who only has money but no people in his life.

Beloved, my counsel is, spend time with and invest in people. Time spent in quality relationship is time spent to live. To take people for granted is to take your future for granted.

Remember this: To take people for granted is to take your future for granted.

Assignments:
1. Decide to relate with people above, below and around you with love and care.
2. Invest in people’s lives to enhance their value and worth in life.

Prayer: O Lord, I ask for the grace not to take people for granted. I receive Your help for quality relationship with others, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
