Australia Prime Minister says Pope should sack archbishop over cover-up

Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson, 67, was sentenced in an Australian court to 12 months in detention after concealing the sexual abuse of two altar boys by a paedophile priest in the 1970s.

Leader Malcolm Turnbull told reporters in Sydney: “He should have resigned and the time has come for the pope to sack him,

“There are many leaders that have called on him to resign, it’s clear that he should resign and I think the time has come now for the ultimate authority in the church to take action and sack him,” he added.

Wilson – who denied his charge throughout his trial has said he will appeal the charges, said he would only offer his resignation to Poe Francis if his appeal failed in the New South Wales state District Court.

“I am conscious of calls for me to resign and have taken them very seriously,” Wilson said in a statement earlier this month.

Australian Archbishop Philip Wilson arrives for sentencing at Newcastle Local Court in Newcastle, Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

“However, at this time, I am entitled to exercise my legal rights and to follow the due process of law. Since that process is not yet complete, I do not intend to resign at this time,” he added.

Mr Turnbull insisted Wilson shouldn’t be allowed to remain in post while appealing his conviction.

Earlier this month, the Australian Catholic…

Discovering Hawaii’s Royal Past at Two Historic Churches in Honolulu

(Photo: Dennis Lennox)

Hawaii’s history and culture is among the richest of any of the U.S. states.

And that history and culture awaits your discovery at two historic churches in Honolulu.

Cathedral Church of St. Andrew

Located about 15 minutes from famous Waikiki Beach is the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew.

Today, it is the seat of the Episcopal bishop of Hawaii, though the cathedral dates to the late 1860s when Hawaii’s royals were closely associated with Queen Victoria and the Anglicanism of the Church of Hawaii was the state church.

Designed by London architects William Slater and R. H. Carpenter, it is inspired by the style of 12th century French Gothic. And while the architecture is interesting and well executed, the cathedral is a notable example of prefabricated construction — its stained glass windows, pointed arches and columns were sent piece-by-piece in ships for assembly in Honolulu. This was quite the logistical and architectural feat, as the Panama Canal wouldn’t open until 1914.

Chapel at the Hawaiian Royal Mausoleum State Monument

Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Theodore Heuck, the cruciform-shaped chapel on the grounds of the Hawaiian Royal Mausoleum State Monument was built between 1863 and 1865.

It would serve as the mausoleum until 1922, when the remains of royals from Hawaii’s Kalākaua and Kamehameha dynasties were transferred to a new underground tomb.

Alterations funded by the wife of Jonah…

New Netflix Series Depicts Jesus Returning to Earth as 12-Year-Old Boy

New Netflix Series Depicts Jesus Returning to Earth as 12-Year-Old Boy

Netflix will be releasing a series about Jesus returning to Earth as a modern day 12-year-old in an adaption called American Jesus.

The show is based on Mark Millar’s comic book, also called American Jesus.

“[It] follows a 12-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead,” says the show’s description. “How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making?”

Millar, who is a Catholic, said his comic book, American Jesus, is “reverential.”

“It’s actually very reverential—like if I write a Spider-Man comic, I want Spider-man fans to like that comic … if I write a story starring Jesus, I want Christians to like that comic,” he said in a 2012 interview. “Sometimes you get stories about religion, mainly to attack religion. It’s something that if you’re a Christian, you won’t be happy about. So the American Jesus comic is something Catholics would like.”

Netflix acquired Millar’s company in 2017 and has since developed many projects with him, including publishing Netflix’s first comic book, “The Magic Order.”

Millar’s past work includes series like Kingsman and Kick A**, both of which have been turned into movies. He also created X-Men Wolverine’s “Old Man Logan”…

So. Baptist Leader Hired as Pastor 2 Months After IMB Investigation Found Sex Abuse Likely

(Photo: Facebook)Mark Aderholt at Whitefield Baptist Church in South Carolina.

A former South Carolina Baptist Convention leader, who recently resigned and has been arrested over sex abuse allegations, was given a job as an executive pastor by a Baptist church just two months after resigning from the International Mission Board over an investigation into the claims, a Texas newspaper has found.

The Star-Telegram, which has been reporting on the arrest of Mark Aderholt, the former associate executive director and chief strategist for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, noted that earlier in July he was charged with sexually assaulting a teenager in Arlington over 20 years ago.

Aderholt, who served at the International Mission Board between 2000-2008, was subject to an internal investigation by the missionary arm of the SBC in 2007, which found him “more likely than not” to have engaged in an “inappropriate sexual relationship” with a 16-year-old girl when he was 25 more than two decades ago.

He resigned from the IMB in January 2008, but a web archive search revealed that as early as March 2008, he was employed as executive pastor at Central Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Aderholt’s profile at the church website at the time apparently stated that he arrived…

ISIS Suicide Bomber Kills 20 People in Northern Afghanistan – Urban Christian News

An Islamic State suicide bomber killed 20 people in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, including a Taliban commander, while in southern Helmand province a government commando unit freed 54 people from a Taliban jail, according to officials.

The stepped up activity in Afghanistan comes as Washington considers a Taliban demand for direct talks in hopes of jump-starting a negotiated end to what is now the longest military engagement by U.S. forces.

A Taliban official in the Middle Eastern State of Qatar where the Islamic insurgency maintains an unofficial office told The Associated Press they wanted direct talks and were ready to put troop withdrawal as well as any outstanding concerns the U.S. might have on the table but so far no official request to open negotiations has come from Washington.

Speaking on condition he not be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media, he said de-listing Taliban leaders from U.S and U.N. watch lists and recognizing their office in Doha, the Qatar capital, would aid progress in talks should they begin.

Meanwhile, in northern Afghanistan’s Sar-i-Pul province, Abdul Qayuom Baqizoi, provincial police chief, said Tuesday’s attack by IS took place as village elders met with Taliban officials. He said 15 of the 20 killed were local elders and five were Taliban, including a Taliban commander.

The Taliban and the Islamic State group have been waging bitter battles in recent days in northern Afghanistan. As many as 100 insurgents from both the Taliban and Islamic State group have perished in recent battles, said Baqizoi.

Organist in race against time to perform at 12 cathedrals in 12 hours

Elise Crean from Armagh will be playing 12 concerts at all 12 cathedrals in Northern Ireland.

She plans to make it to all the churches in time by travelling on the back of a motorcycle her husband will be driving.

“The biggest amount of preparation has been the recitals in each cathedral. So I’ve been spending a lot of time going around the cathedrals and practicing on the organs just to get all of the settings sorted out for the recital,” Crean said.

Crean said she will embark on the 270 mile,14 hour journey to raise £70,000 to fix the organ at her church, First Armagh Presbyterian.

She said: “The organ we have in church is actually a very important organ. It was actually the first organ to be installed in County Armagh way back in 1905 so it’s important to preserve that tradition.

Work is due to begin restoring the instrument in October.

“There’s no way you can buy a new pipe organ for £70,000 so this really is the best option.”

Crean said she expects it to be a tiring day but knows it will be rewarding.

“I expect it to be a long and exhausting day it’s going to be quite a physical challenge travelling around on a motorbike,” she said.

“It’s also going to be a mental challenge to pay all of those different organs in one day. But it’s also once in a lifetime kind of opportunity and experience so I’m excited about the challenge.”

‘I Gave God My Gayness, Addiction’

(Photo: The Christian Post)Luis Javier Ruiz, survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, speaks at the Freedom March on May 5, 2018.

A survivor of the Orlando Pulse nightclub mass shooting is recounting the trauma of that night and how God used it to bring about his repentance and why he now says he is no longer gay.

In an interview last week with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association on their “GPS: God. People. Stories” broadcast, Luis Javier Ruiz spoke of his journey out of the homosexual life, how the Holy Spirit continues to transform him, and how he is now ministering to people.

Now in his 30s, Ruiz explained that although he grew up in the church it was during a time when many congregations did not have the tools with which to engage this issue, and what he learned was how to keep secrets. All the while, he was struggling with his sexuality, having experienced same-sex attraction since his childhood. He finally came out as a homosexual to his family toward the end of his high school years.

On his mom’s birthday, they were listening to a radio program where someone was railing against homosexuals in an abusive manner complete with charges of “they’re going to hell” and ‘they’re an abomination.”

“It was bad,” Ruiz recalled the experience, “and we got into an argument about it … and I just ended it with ‘Mom, you know what? Your son is gay. How about that?”

His parents did not take the news well and his relationship with them soured; they often wondered what they had done wrong as parents and began to question their ministry in the church.

After high school, Ruiz joined the armed forces…

Pulse Nightclub Shooting Survivor Is “No Longer Gay” after Giving God His Heart

Pulse Nightclub Shooting Survivor Is “No Longer Gay” after Giving God His Heart

A man who survived the 2016 shooting at an Orlando nightclub says he is no longer gay.

Luis Javier Ruiz said in an interview recently with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s “GPS: God. People. Stories” that he repented and was changed after the shooting.

Ruiz said he was raised in the church before churches knew how to minister to homosexuals. Instead, he kept his secret until finally coming out to his family at the end of high school.

He says his family was listening to the radio where someone was saying homosexuals were “an abomination” and were “going to hell.”

“It was bad,” Ruiz said. “And we got into an argument about it … and I just ended it with ‘Mom, you know what? Your son is gay. How about that?”

Ruiz graduated from high school and joined the armed forces where he served for 15 years. He did not reveal his sexuality to the military. After his service, he moved to Florida and became involved with a church. However, he also became part of the Orlando LGBT community.

On June 11, 2016, his birthday, he went with friends to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Early June 12, the shooting started.

The shooter, Omar Mateen, killed 49 people that night. Mateen was shot and killed by police.

“While this is all going on, I’m thinking ‘I’m about to die, I’m about to go to Hell. Like, why did I even come [to Pulse],'” Ruiz said…

Church of England to Start Personality Test to Weed Out Narcissistic Clergy

(Photo: Reuters/Toby Melville)St. Mary’s Church at Woburn in southern England, May 15, 2015.

Amid concerns that the office of priesthood attracts narcissists, the Church of England wants all trainee priests to go through personality tests before their induction.

The denomination is “considering the use of psychological assessment as part of the process of discernment for those seeking ordination in the Church of England,” The Telegraph quotes Julian Hubbard, director of the Church’s Ministry Division, as saying.

The Church’s bishops will consider undertaking an exercise next year to find ways to analyze the personalities of new priests so that the denomination knows what kind of people it’s attracting.

According to Mark Vernon, a psychotherapist and former Church of England priest, narcissists are attracted by positions of power to “lord it over others.”

“The church offers a particular route which would appeal to some who like the entitlement — you’re called a reverend, you sit in high places, you wear special clothes, you’re seen as authoritative, you have captive audiences, you’re spiritually elite — whatever it might be, people get drawn to that way of trying to cope with that sense of self-dissatisfaction,” Vernon tells the newspaper.

Ontario Backtracks Slightly, Will Teach Some Parts of Disputed Sex-Ed Curriculum Despite Intention to Scrap It – Urban Christian News

Ontario will to teach public school students certain elements of the controversial sex-ed curriculum despite their newly elected premier’s intention to scrap it and return to the one used 20 years ago.

According to The National Post, Education Minister Lisa Thompson said that students would continue to learn about sexual consent, gender identity, and cyber safety amid criticism that the version they planned to return to — which was last updated in 1998 — did not include many themes such as how to stay safe on the Internet and did not feature things like same-sex marriage.

“We are going to be preparing our students and preparing them for the realities of 2018 and we’re going to be embracing what was being taught in 2014,” Thompson said, noting that a section on “developing sexual relations” was the only part of the latest curriculum under revision.

Doug Ford, the province’s new premier who led the Progressive Conservative Party to a majority government in June, taking 76 of 124 seats in the legislative Assembly, had long promised to do away with the sex-ed curriculum from former Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Last week, his party moved to quit using the Wynne curriculum by September. Ford has said that the controversial parts in sex-ed materials should not be the responsibility of the government to teach but is the job of parents.

The contested curriculum “introduced homosexuality and gender identity in Grade 3, masturbation in Grade 6, and oral and anal sex in Grade 7, as well as suggesting that Grade 7 children carry condoms and Grade 8 children come up with…
