Town Bans Bible Studies in Family’s Home, Threatens $500 Fines

Town Bans Bible Studies in Family’s Home, Threatens $500 Fines

A religious liberty law firm filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against a Pennsylvania town that allegedly is banning Bible clubs and other religious meetings from being held on a couple’s 35-acre property.

The lawsuit by the Independence Law Center against Sewickley Heights Borough – which is about 15 miles from Pittsburgh – alleges the town ordered Scott and Terri Fetterolf to stop holding religious activities on the property as part of a zoning restriction. Parties, political rallies and book club meetings are not banned under the zoning ordinance.

The suit says the town’s position violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom, free speech, and the freedom to assemble.

“Government should not target religious activities for punishment, particularly when similar secular activities are permitted,” said Jeremy Samek, senior counsel for the Independence Law Center. “In America, no government can categorically ban people from assembling to worship on one’s own property.”

The suit says the property “has been used for many decades to host religious activities such as seminary picnics, seminary board meetings, Pittsburgh Institute for Youth Ministry, Bible studies, fundraisers for pastors and churches, Billy Graham Foundation meetings, and many more religious activities.”

The Fetterolfs bought the property in 2003 from Nancy Chalfant,…

9 Church Members Slaughtered During 2015 Emanuel AME Church Bible Study to Get Memorial

(Rendering: Dbox for The Mother Emanuel Nine Memorial/Handel Architects)A rendering of the planned fountain at the center of the memorial, bearing the names of those killed in the massacre at the Emanuel AME Church in 2015.

Three years after nine members of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, were violently gunned down by an avowed white racist during a Bible study in June 2017, church officials announced Sunday that they will be honored with a memorial.

Plans for the permanent tribute to the late parishioners designed by Michael Arad, the architect behind the 9/11 Memorial in New York, were unveiled by officials at the church on Sunday evening, The Associated Press reported. Sections of the church’s parking lot will be transformed into a stone memorial courtyard and a grassy survivors’ garden The New York Times said.

Arad, who is a New York-based partner with Handel Architects, told The New York Times that the memorial was “intended to promote a sense of community, that when you walk into this space, you become a member of this congregation.”

The memorial will consist of a marble fountain with carvings of the victims’ names flanked by curved stone benches that rise above visitors’ heads “like sheltering wings,” the church said in a news release.

DCLM Daily Manna 23 July 2018 Daily Devotional – Hand It Over

Topic: Hand It Over [DCLM Daily Manna 23rd July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Text: Psalm 102:1-11 (KJV)

Key Verse: “”Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily” (Psalm 102:2).

MESSAGE:

A common inscription in most Christian homes had a liner about Jesus Christ, the unseen GUEST. Indeed, He is the silent Watcher in the home. He knows about the storm and challenges in the family. Nothing escapes Him. And He is not unfamiliar with the devil’s antics.

The Psalmist in the text knew where to turn to as he absorbed the gale of woes that came upon him. He did not have to consult an oracle of the ungodly. Nor did he panic in surrender to fate. He also did not have to curse God or rail on destiny. He did not lay any blame on some ancestral or generational curse. Instead of all these unhelpful approaches, he did a realistic appraisal of his situation and discovered the enormity of his condition. Although it was not a helpless situation, he knew it was clearly beyond what he or mortal man could take care of. He needed to go to the Higher Authority, a Supernatural Force namely Jehovah God of Israel.

Having identified where succour and solution could be accessed, he presented his case to God. He hid nothing from Him. The faithful God does not reject those who heed His call. He says in Isaiah 45:22: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else”.

When you are born again and focus on heaven, you will not be trapped in the snare of the devil to frighten you with short-lived challenges of life. No matter how boisterous the wind and waves, know that your boat cannot sink. Just rest on Jesus’ unfailing promise.

Thought For The Day: Resist fear with faith in God.

Bible Reading In One Year: Isaiah 31-34

Seeds of Destiny 23 July 2018 Daily Devotional – The Benefits Of Releasing Full Potentials

Topic: The Benefits Of Releasing Full Potentials [Seeds of Destiny 23 July 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 1 Samuel 17:26

Thought For The Day: When potential is released, energy is also released; the release of potential makes a person younger and stronger.

Previously, we saw that profitable living is living to release one’s potential. That is to say, until our potentials are released, we are not living profitably on earth. On the other hand, the refusal to deploy your potential is a waste of your existence on the earth.

Now, it is important to know that there are benefits for full potential release. Let me give you two of them:
1. Commitment to full potential release is commitment to quality existence
Any time you are committed to pulling out what God has put inside of you, you have made a commitment of living a life of quality and vitality. David could not sleep (die) until he had served his generation with his prophetic, priestly, kingly and musical gifts and skills (Acts 13:36). No one can kill you when you are ready to download what God had uploaded into your life.

2. To Release Potential Is To Release Energy
This was what happened to David. As a skilled fighter, and having killed the lion and the bear, David was excited when he saw Goliath; his energy was released to deal with what everybody ran away from (1 Samuel 17). Your energy level rises when it is time to release potential because the release of potential is the release of agility.

As a matter of experience, after preaching in six services on Sundays, I would feel like starting another one – the seventh service. One day, after ministering in Worship and Wonders Night, our all-night programme, I told my wife that I feel like preaching for another six hours. She said, ‘Well! You can go ahead and preach, but let the rest of us who are normal human beings go and sleep.’

Beloved, when potential is released, energy is also released; the release of potential makes a person younger and stronger. I counsel you to deploy your potentials maximally for the benefit of humanity.

Remember this: When potential is released, energy is also released; the release of potential makes a person younger and stronger.

Assignments:
1. Make the best of life; give life all it takes.
2. Deploy your potentials by serving your generation .

Prayer: O Lord, I ask for the grace to deploy my potential for the benefit of my generation and the advancement of Your Kingdom. I refuse to be buried with my gifts and talents, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Businessman buys 1,000 Bibles to give away

Wilmington Christian Bookstore owner, Ron Merkle told News Journal: “After I picked myself up off the floor, I showed him several less expensive paperback Bibles, and he said he would prefer something a little nicer that folks might be more inclined to keep for years to come.”

The pair settled on the New Kings James Version Bible and the man agreed to purchase 1,000 Bibles instead.

However, Merkle was shocked to discover the man intended for him to give them away for free to customers.

Customers are now able to receive a free Bible without purchasing anything in the bookshop until all 1,000 have been gifted.

Merkle revealed the first person to benefit from the businessman’s generosity was the man that delivered the Bibles to his shop.

“He said he had been thinking about going back to church and didn’t know where his old one was,” Merkle said. “He has one now.”

Most American Women Only Have 1 or 2 Children

(Photo: Reuters/Darren Staples)

More American parents are choosing to have only one or two children, not only in large cities but nationwide.

According to a recent article from The Cut, “Nearly two-thirds of women with children now have two or one — i.e., an oldest, a youngest, but no middle.”

The finding shows a significant change in the average size of an American family when compared to decades ago.

As also noted in the report, back in 1976, the Pew Research Center conducted a study which revealed that a couple with four children was “the most common family unit.” Furthermore, 25 percent of families back then had three children, while 24 percent had two and just 11 percent had one child.

As for why more and more couples are opting to limit their family size to only having one or two children, factors like finances and changing attitudes are being pointed to.

The Cut also notes that millennials have become more inclined to marry at a later age and they are also OK with taking their time before starting a family.

A USA Today report adds that another possible reason for why more families are smaller is because it costs more to raise children now. Citing stats provided by Pew, the report notes that raising a child in 1960 typically costs less than $200,000, but as recently as 2013, that number has gone up to nearly $250,000.

Singer Andy Grammer Blesses Strangers at Restaurant with Act of Kindness

Singer Andy Grammer Blesses Strangers at Restaurant with Act of Kindness

When singer Andy Grammer paid the bill for a table of five elderly ladies, it’s because he was missing his mom. But then one of the ladies said something to reveal the pop star’s real-life act of kindness was actually a case of divine intervention!

God always has a way of showing up when we need Him the most. We can feel His love through the actions and words of others. And that’s just what happened when singer Andy Grammer felt the urge to do something nice for a table of strangers.

Andy is a record producer, songwriter, and singer. He garnered national attention with upbeat songs like “Honey, I’m Good” and “Keep Your Head Up.”

But regardless of fame, stars are just like us. They have good days and bad.

No matter how old you are, losing a parent is never easy. And even though Andy lost his mom nine years ago, he still finds himself missing her often.

“Today is 9 years since my sweet mother left this world,” Andy wrote on Facebook on the 9-year anniversary of his mother’s passing. “I remember standing at this spot shell-shocked as we lowered her body into the ground. All I knew was I had lost my center, that there was a huge hole in my world and that it could never be filled.”

And as he sat eating breakfast at a restaurant, a table across the way got him thinking about his late mom.

At the table sat five little, elderly ladies —…

Theologian Rebukes Pastor Steven Furtick’s Claim That Doubting Bible Is OK, Says ‘Doubt Is Disobedience’

(Screenshot: YouTube)Pastor Steven Furtick and Charlamagne tha God

An author and associate professor of Christian theology has hit back against Elevation Church pastor Steven Furtick’s recent message that it’s not wrong for Christians to have doubts.

“We must take care here. Doubt is not a virtue. Doubt is not part of faith,” Owen Strachan, director of the Center for Theological and Cultural Engagement at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote last week.

“Coming to faith in Christ necessarily means that you do not doubt the gospel of grace. Coming to faith in Christ means that you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Jesus presented himself as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Jesus demands total repentance and total trust in him, and he is right to do so. Jesus rebuked doubting Thomas (John 20:24-29).”

Strachan’s comments were in response to Furtick, who in a recent sermon admitted that he has doubts about some things in the Bible.

“I have my doubts. I read that whom the Son sets free is free indeed but sometimes I feel bound by stuff. I have my doubts. Is that alright? Do you need to find another church now that you know that the dude with the mic has some doubts?” said Furtick, whose fast-growing church meets in over a dozen…

Open Heavens 23 July 2018 – Remove the Log, Please

Topic: Remove the Log, Please [Open Heavens 23 July 2018 Monday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?”Romans 2:21

Read: Matthew 7:1-5 (KJV)

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Bible in One Year: Ezra 7-8, Matthew 6:16-34

Open Heavens 23 July 2018 MESSAGE:

Today, we will be reflecting on the subject of hypocrisy. In general terms, hypocrisy is the habit of pretending to be what one is not. Hypocrites especially pretend to be morally upright but in reality, they are morally bankrupt. Jesus Christ identified the Pharisees as perfect examples of hypocrites, and He exposes some interesting characteristics they possess. Let us consider some of these traits, so that we can guard ourselves against them. Simply put, hypocrites are blind to their own faults (Matthew 7:5), they are ignorant of the current move of God (Luke 12:56), they do not know what is important to God (Luke 13:15-16) and they obsess over the traditions of men (Mark 7:8). Furthermore, they lack knowledge of God’s true expectations of His people (Matthew 23:14-15), and love to make public display of their moral and religious standing, (Matthew 6:2). Hypocrites view themselves as the only godly, virtuous and spiritual people around. Consequently, they are highly judgmental of other people’s mistakes and short comings in public, whereas they themselves may even be guilty of worse sins in secret. A careful consideration of these characteristics may reveal one or two that may be evident in your life. I pray that God will destroy every root of hypocrisy in your life today in Jesus’ Name.

Jesus often called the Pharisees hypocrites because of the conflict between their external actions and their internal state (Matthew 23:27-28). In order not to end up like them, we must thoroughly check ourselves often. Do you seldom preach to yourself as a Christian? Do you find yourself practicing what you preach against? Are you blind to your own faults? Do you have the habit of crucifying others when they fall into error? Are you judgmental of other people’s mistakes? Is your internal state consistent with your external works? Are you in anyway hypocritical in thought or action? May the Lord shine His light into our hearts and deliver His Church from hypocrisy in Jesus’ Name. Jesus compared hypocrites to whitewashed tombs and to dishes that are clean on the outside but dirty on the inside (Matthew 23:25-28). It’s such a scary thing to be viewed as neat and clean outside while the internal space that matters most is in despicable condition. This illustration also speaks to Christians who are deemed to be mature, and yet are secretly involved in shameful things. If you are in such a situation, it is time to remove the log from your eyes and straighten out your life. Your efforts to do away with hypocrisy will receive God’s approval in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please help me to be honest with myself henceforth in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heavens 23 July 2018 Hymn 15: Nearer My God To Thee

1. Nearer, my God to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be.
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

2. Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down.
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

3. There let the way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou send’st to me
In mercy given:
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

4. Then, with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional Sunday, 22 July 2018 – Enemies Of Happy Home

TOPIC: Enemies Of Happy Home (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Sunday, 22 July 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 23: 24-26

MEMORY VERSE: “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”Philippians 2:4

The MESSAGE:

A good marriage is the outcome of prayer, diligence, love and hard work. In the same vein, a bad marriage is caused by prayerlessness, selfishness, laziness and unhealthy attitudes. It takes a lot of effort to experience success and happiness in marriage. The step that one should take is to deal with the hindrance to success in marriage. A marriage is declared a success or a failure due to certain ingredients that are either present or lacking in it. Your home (marriage and family) may be a little heaven on earth or the abode of diabolical spirits. If you really want to enjoy your marriage, you must painstakingly and deliberately deal with the enemies of a happy home.

What are these enemies of a happy home? *Selfishness:* It is totally wrong and unscriptural to continue to think and behave selfishly after getting married. A married man and woman who always talks about “my car, my house, my books, my money” etc does not know what a true Christian marriage is all about. Husbands and wives who are always thinking about what they can get out of marriage rather than what they can give or contribute in order to make their marriages successful, need to know that selfishness hinders the progress of a family. A man or woman who is always eager to seize opportunities and grab advantages but is never willing to make sacrifices, without knowing it, is paving the way for the collapse of his or her home. Another enemy of a happy home in today’s world is *impurity,* that is, unfaithfulness and infidelity in marriage. Many a home has been wrecked by this. Sexual promiscuity and infidelity have ruined many lives and homes.

The third enemy of a happy home is *lack of commitment.* Many marriages have not been fulfilled because the partners are not committed to each other and to their marital vows. If you want your marriage to be healthy, happy and stable, there must be commitment to nurture and preserve it the same way you care and preserve your own life. A fourth harbinger to broken homes and unsuccessful marriages is yielding to societal pressure and ungodly counsel. Sad enough, many are seeking and entering marriage based on pressure and not on biblical counsel and standards. Marriage, after all, is a divine institution that must be approached with utmost care. To deal with the enemies of a happy home, God, the inventor of marriage must be consulted. If your marriage is not what it should be, then invite God, the inventor of marriage into your relationship. He specialises in fixing strained relationships and broken homes. He will heal your marriage and you will experience true peace and joy.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
TRUST AND SACRIFICIAL LOVE ARE KEY INGREDIENTS OF A HAPPY HOME. EMBRACE THEM IN YOUR MARRIAGE.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Every enemy of your home shall be roasted by fire.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Agents of confusion in my home, die by fire, in the name of Jesus.
2. Powers drinking the honey and milk of my marriage, die permanently, in Jesus’ name.
3. Foundational altars, raised against my marriage and family, catch fire and burn to ashes, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Evil pattern of my father’s house haunting my marriage, die, in the name of Jesus.
5. Ancestral yoke in my foundation, break by fire, in the name of Jesus.
6. Lord Jesus, come and reign in my home, in the name of Jesus.
7. Heavens of my marriage, open by fire, in the name of Jesus Christ.
