The Uniting Church in Australia’s Assembly voted Saturday to change the denomination’s definition of marriage and allow ministers to officiate weddings for same-sex couples.

In a statement posted on the Church’s website, Uniting Church in Australia President Deidre Palmer announced the changes that were made by the 265-member assembly that gathered in Melbourne, saying: “To honor the diversity of Christian belief among our members, we will hold two equal and distinct statements of belief on marriage.”

The first statement of belief regarding marriage is one that the Uniting Church has been following for a long time.

“The existing statement of belief that ‘marriage for Christians is the freely given consent and commitment in public and before God of a man and a woman to live together for life’ has been retained,” Palmer said before added that “a new additional statement of belief has also been adopted.”

“That statement reads ‘marriage for Christians is the freely given consent and commitment in public and before God of two people to live together for life,’ Palmer said.

Uniting Church in Australia is the third-largest Christian denomination in the…

17 Men Accused of Repeatedly Raping 11-Y-O Deaf Girl; India’s Rape Crisis Is Getting Worse – Urban Christian News

A court in southern India has charged a 66-year-old man and 16 others with the repeated gang-rape of an 11-year-old deaf girl over a period of seven months. The incident is part the country’s ongoing rape crisis, which has also seen Christian women attacked.

The accused, including security guards, elevator operators, electricians and plumbers, have been ordered to be held in custody until July 31, according to The Hindu, a newspaper published from the city of Chennai, where the crimes took place.

The 66-year-old, who’s an elevator operator, allegedly drugged the girl and invited other men to assault her in her apartment block after she returned home from school. The other men filmed each other raping the child, according to media reports.

More suspects are likely to be charged in the case, police said.

In his police complaint, the girl’s father wrote that his daughter complained of periodic stomach aches and later told her mother that she was sexually abused from Jan. 15 to July 5, according to the Hindustan Times.

The accused had blackmailed and threatened the victim with dire consequences if she reported the rape to her parents.

The incident has sparked public outrage.

Lawyers beat the accused when they arrived at a court in Chennai on Tuesday, and the lawyers’ association in the city has declared that no attorney will defend the accused.

On Wednesday, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said 110,333 cases of rape were registered in the country between 2014 and 2016, according to Press Trust of India.

Bishop highlights the arts and affordable housing in House of Lords

Bishop Martin became the Bishop of Chichester in 2012 and joined the second chamber in January 2018 as one of the 26 Lords Spiritual.

On 19th July, he made his maiden speech to the House, where typically new members give and indication of what concerns them in their first address to other peers.

Bishop Martin decided to focus on the arts and affordable housing for young people.

He cited the University of Chichester as an example of where the arts and Christian ethics have met: “It is no accident that today the arts form a central part of the University’s life, drawing from rich resources in the cathedral’s outstanding musical tradition, from Pallant House art gallery, and from the Festival Theatre, (enjoying summer performances of Me and My Girl) that runs a vibrant youth theatre of over 800 people of school age.  Its workshops for young people and adults with special needs represent a remarkable achievement of social inclusion.

“In a creative, balanced and economically sound society, the arts, science, engineering and technology need each other. As we consider the value to the UK economy of higher education as an export, the Church of England, a foundational stakeholder in Higher Education, is also concerned with the quality and scope of the offer we make to overseas students.

“The benefits of access to learning and the arts…

Mattress Firm, Simba Looking to Hire People to Sleep on Their Mattresses

(Photo: UNSPLASH/Vladislav Muslakov)

People who have long dreamed about being compensated for dozing off at work are in luck, as two companies are now offering salaried positions for sleep enthusiasts.

First off is Mattress Firm, and they’re seeking someone who can be their ideal “Snoozetern.”

The individual hired to be Mattress Firm’s Snoozetern will spend plenty of time resting and relaxing on the bed provided to them. The company will even provide adjustable bases that can be used for watching something on a laptop, reading or even eating.

While sleeping is certainly the main duty of the person the company hires, they will also be expected to handle other tasks.

These include creating reviews for mattresses both in written and video form and hosting social media events.

There will also seemingly be times when the Snoozetern has to get up out of bed to interview people around Houston, Texas, and ask them about their sleeping habits.

The person hired will have to commit to working 20 hours a week that will still involve plenty of sleeping.

Speaking to Moneyish, Mattress Firm said that the person they hire “will put their rest to the test and help us get product feedback in real time.”

Simba is also looking for people who will be open to sleeping during their working hours, Save the Student reports.

The company further detailed their new job offers in a post on Airtasker.

According to Simba CEO and co-founder Steve Reid, they’re looking to form a “Three Person…

Baby Boomers Are Returning to Church

The rebellious generation may become the religious generation.

Baby boomers, those born between the years 1946 to 1964, are becoming more involved in church.

One of the most significant longitudinal studies (a study over many years) ever done provides a treasure trove of information for church leaders.

And one of the most significant findings is the increasing number of baby boomers becoming more involved in religious activity like churches.

This discovery is the major finding from the latest wave of data collected from the Longitudinal Study of Generations, which was originally developed in 1970 at USC by then-assistant professor Vern Bengston. His successors have collected a ninth round of data in this 45-year study. The research was funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

It is amazing. Absolutely amazing.

Here is the gem in the study: One in five boomers have increased their religious and church activity in the past few years.

Don’t take that statement lightly. Among the boomer generation, 20 percent are becoming more receptive to faith and church. That’s approximately 19 million boomers when the percentage is applied to the entire generation.

The study cited three major reasons for this shift:

  1. Boomers have more time, and they want to use that extra time pursuing a more meaningful life, including church.
  2. Boomers are becoming more aware of the brevity of life and are seeking answers to questions they had not previously asked.
  3. Boomers are more aware of the fragility of life. They don’t…

Chinese Authorities Bulldoze Church To Build Houses, Train Station

Chinese Authorities Bulldoze Church To Build Houses, Train Station

Chinese authorities bulldozed a registered church building July 17 without warning to make way for construction of a new neighborhood and train station.

International Christian Concern (ICC) reported that more than 70 police officers and workers showed up to take down the Liangwang Catholic Church building in China’s Shandong province. They lacked the proper documentation, but it didn’t matter.

Church officials Gao Rongli, Zhang Siling and Li Xiangmei – who were inside the building — had their phones confiscated and destroyed. It took only 15 minutes to demolish the building using bulldozers and pickaxes, according to ICC. Officials spared nothing, destroying the altars, benches and furnishings.

“The disproportionate manpower used to demolish this church goes to show that China is fearful of Christians,” said Gina Goh, ICC’s regional manager. “The government knew that the demolition in the name of urban zoning would be met with resistance, so it ensured success by taking extreme measures. Despite their best efforts to intimidate the Church with actions like this, the government cannot destroy the faith and resilience of Chinese Christians.”

It isn’t uncommon for China to destroy churches for commercial purposes, ICC reported. Last year, a Catholic church near a highway exit in Shaanxi province was demolished, likely for commercial purposes.

Speakers for LGBT Christian Conference ‘Revoice’ Defend Event

(Screenshot: revoice.us)The first-ever Revoice Conference, scheduled for July 26-28, 2018 at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri.

Participants for the LGBT Christian conference Revoice are defending the event from criticism that the gathering will promote pro-LGBT ideas at the expense of biblical teaching.

The Revoice Conference, a multiday event scheduled for July 26–28 at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri has garnered controversy well before its opening session.

According to its website, Revoice seeks to “encourage, support, and empower gay, lesbian, and other same-sex-attracted Christians so they can experience the life-giving character of the historic, Christian sexual ethic.”

Though organizers of the event hold to the traditional biblical teaching of marriage, some argue that the conference is designed to advance an LGBT agenda in churches at the expense of sound Christian teaching.

Researchers at the Universities of Bristol and Tennessee Suggest Shunning Religion Makes Nations Richer and More Tolerant for Individual Rights – Urban Christian News

Shunning religion can boost a country’s prosperity, a study has found.

Researchers at the universities of Bristol and Tennessee found that higher levels of secularism led to higher wealth and a greater tolerance for individual rights.

They examined output figures for 109 countries and the importance of religious faith in those states.

A modest increase in secularisation corresponded to an average £800 increase in output per head within a decade, a £2,000 increase in 20 years and a £4,000 increase within 30.  But Damian Ruck, of the University of Bristol’s population health sciences institute, told The Times: ‘Of course, there’s no reason why you can’t be religious and also respect individual rights.’

The researchers noted: ‘A century ago, Emile Durkheim [a French sociologist] proposed that technological and socioeconomic advances come to displace the functions of religion, whereas Max Weber [a German Philosopher] contended the opposite, that monotheistic religion, the so-called Protestant ethic, made the development of capitalism possible.’

Belief and religious participation have been on the decline in recent decades in most rich nations – but have remained high in developing countries.

Google translate tells you about end times when you type ‘dog’

When typing ‘dog’ 19 times into google translate and then setting the original language to Maori, the search engine somewhat creatively translates it as: “Doomsday Clock in three minutes at twelve We are experiencing character and a dramatic developments in the world, which indicate that we are increasingly approaching the end times and Jesus’ return.”

This was first discovered by Jon Christian at Motherhood and Tristan Green made this video to prove it:

Other examples have been posted across the internet, with Old Testament language being a common occurrence:

One possibility for this happening is that Google may be using religious texts as its training text for translations from languages with a less widely translated texts of their own – the Bible therefore provides opportunity for cross-referencing in many languages as it’s widely translated. This also fits in with the idea of Google also wanting to provide at least a coherent answer based on the texts that it know, regardless of whether it corresponds with the nonsense written.

Tristan Green says: “But, in a twist nobody could see coming, we’re going to say that it’s at least cosmically possible that the AI is functioning exactly as it’s intended — because it’s alive, found religion, and is now proselytizing.”

Heat Waves Can Lead to Death Without Access to Ways to Cool Down

Expand | Collapse
(Photo: Unsplash/David Law)High temperatures are being recorded all over the world

Rising temperatures are continuing to adversely affect many people in different parts of the world, but beyond the heat, there are other factors that contribute significantly to raising the risk of fatalities in the midst of a heat wave.

According to a recent NPR report, most of the people who died in Canada’s Quebec province when temperatures soared to 95 degrees were older individuals who lived in homes that lacked air conditioning and who were also suffering from chronic health ailments.

Outside of Quebec, Canada, there were people in other parts of the world who fell victim to the heat and an inability to escape its oppressive effects.

A recent Vox article notes that 65 people died in Karachi, Pakistan, in May from a combination of the extreme heat and having no readily available access to fans or air conditoning because of a power outage. In Japan last weekend, eight people died and over 2,000 were injured as temperatures reached 101 degrees.

Speaking recently to NPR, David Kaiser, a physician manager at the Montreal Regional Department of Public Health, highlighted certain factors that can put someone’s life at greater risk whenever the temperatures spike.

After examining the nature of the deaths accounted in Montreal from June 29 through July 7, Kaiser found that nearly all of the people who died were over 50, with some even being as old as 85. Furthermore, the majority of the older men who already had pre-existing health problems were the ones who proved to be the most adversely…
