Nearly 1 Million Displaced in Ethiopia Amid Ethnic Violence – Urban Christian News

About one million people have fled their homes due to ethnic violence in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most-populous country, which could lead to a major humanitarian crisis, an international Christian development organization has warned.

Around 40,000 people were displaced in June alone in southern Ethiopia, as they fled the possibility of disease outbreaks and extremely high malnutrition rates among displaced children, according to World Vision.

The violence began in April fuelled by grievances over land in the ethnically diverse country of 100 million people. Protests due to a sense of marginalization among several ethnic groups had forced Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to resign in February.

Violence is taking place in the border areas of Gedeo in the SNNP, or Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, and in West Guji in Oromia state.

“Survivors have seen their homes burnt and looted, ruining their means of earning an income. Even when security returns, people will struggle to provide food for their families for months, jeopardising their children’s health,” Getahun Mara, World Vision Ethiopia’s Emergency Nutrition Coordinator, says in a statement.

First Rescued Boys Leave Thai Cave as Operation Gets Underway – Urban Christian News

Two ambulances were seen Sunday evening leaving a cave in northern Thailand where 12 youth soccer players and their coach have been trapped for more than two weeks, hours after an operation began to rescue them.

The ambulances drove to a nearby helipad, and a helicopter was seen taking off. Officials had said earlier that helicopters were on standby to take anyone rescued from the cave to a hospital.

It was unclear who was inside the ambulances or the helicopter. Officials did not immediately comment.

The operation to rescue the 12 boys and their coach by having them dive out of the flooded cave began in the morning, with expert divers entering the sprawling complex for the complicated and dangerous mission.

Chiang Rai province acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is heading the operation, said that 13 foreign and five Thai divers were taking part in the rescue and that two divers would accompany each boy as they’re gradually extracted.

“Divers will work with doctors in the cave to examine each the kids’ health to determine who should get to come out first,” Narongsak said in the morning.

The entire operation to rescue all 13 could last two to four days, depending on weather and water conditions, said army Maj. Gen. Chalongchai Chaiyakam.

The only way to bring the boys, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach out of Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province is by navigating dark and tight passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents, as well as oxygen-depleted air. A former Thai navy SEAL passed out and died making the dive Friday.

Location: Greencastle, Pennsylvania

Pastor: John Bartlett

Weekly Worship: 10:00 AM, Eastern

God has positioned Storehouse with partnerships with county government and other agencies to help bring hope to those struggling in this substance abuse. Please pray as they move forward to be faithful to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. Also pray for their partnership with Noah’s House and Gracie’s Place in Chambersburg. These are faith based homes for men and women wanting out of substance abuse. Storehouse’s desire is to have more homes like these in its county.

C of E to establish independent body to handle sexual abuse cases

On Saturday members of the General Synod met in York for and voted unanimously in favour of developing an independent ombudsman service which would handle complaints relating to how safeguarding cases have been managed in the church.

The decision came after members of the Church’s legislative body heard a report by the National Safeguarding Steering Group (NSSG).

The report asked the almost 500 members of the General Synod to strengthen support and engagement with victims and survivors of abuse, as well as implement more robust processes for clergy selection and discipline.

It also urged the hundreds of bishops, clergy and lay people to support increased oversight and scrutiny in regards to safeguarding.

A victim of sexual abuse addressed the synod for the first time ever during the safeguarding debate.

Jo Kind received a standing ovation after talking about the harm caused to victims when the Church has been defective on sexual abuse.

She called on the Church of England to have a full focus on survivors and not “half an eye on reputation protection”.

Divers Enter Cave to Retrieve Children and Their Coach After Water Levels Dropped to Their Lowest in Ten Days – Urban Christian News

The evacuation of 12 schoolboys trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand has begun and they could be out by tonight, the rescue commander announced this morning.

An extraction team of 18 international divers started their ‘extremely dangerous’ operation at 10am local time after the boys’ anxious families were informed.

All of the youngsters and their 25-year-old coach are expected to emerge one by one from the cave as early as 9pm if everything goes to plan, Governor Narongsak told reporters on Sunday morning.

Each boy will be accompanied by two divers on the perilous 4km (2.5miles) journey through murky waters and narrow tunnels. It’s understood they will be able to walk most of the way after teams drained the water level by 30cm (12ins) last night.

‘Today is D-Day,’ the governor who has led the rescue announced. ‘The water level has reached the lowest it has been in ten days. We ask to pray that this operation is a success.

‘The boys are physically and mentally fit to come out. All of the families have been told about today’s operation.’

The idea of inserting an inflatable nylon tube into the cave system to create an underwater tunnel for the trapped boys to crawl out of is being tested near the caves.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk mooted the idea on Friday as a possible solution to bring the boys, who can’t swim, to safety without having to be in the water.

Thai rescuers were pictured with the inflatable tube near the cave system as the rescue mission got underway today.

England Fans Go Wild as Three Lions Beat Sweden With One Supporter Crashing Through Bus Stop and Another Run Over – Urban Christian News

England fans caused chaos on the nation’s streets last night as they celebrated reaching a World Cup semi final for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Ecstatic supporters scaled traffic lights, rode on bonnets and one even crashed through the glass roof of a London bus stop as a day’s drinking turned ugly.

For many Three Lions’ fans, reaching a semi-final will be a new experience – but sadly the scenes off the pitch took a more familiar tone.

Boozy supporters ran amok in London, after hours of drinking in packed pubs and bars showing the big match.

One lout in Clapham Junction was filmed clambering onto the roof of a double-decker before jumping on to a bus stop.

But he crashed straight through the glass and sent an innocent traveller flying onto the pavement.

It is unclear if the woman was hurt.

Elsewhere, two shirtless men were filmed riding on the bonnet of a car.

The potentially lethal episode is understood to have happened in Folkestone, Kent.

Unable to see, the driver reportedly nearly crashed into a family crossing the street with their dog.

Police are now investigating.

Christian charity to tackle climate change in Malawi with new £3.2m programme

The three-year Climate Challenge Programme Malawi (CCPM) focuses on delivering long-term change and improving people’s access to food, water and energy.

The programme will be delivered by Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) and will work with local people to identify the climate challenges they face, with a particular focus on helping the most vulnerable, including women and girls, and promoting human rights.

SCIAF director Alistair Dutton said: “Millions of the poorest people in the world are suffering terribly from climate change, despite them having done least to cause the problem.

“Increasingly erratic weather makes it incredibly hard for small scale farmers to know when to plant their seeds, while more frequent and severe floods, drought and storms can wipe out their crops overnight, leaving them hungry and forced to leave their homes.”

He added that the programme will help vulnerable communities in southern Malawi cope with the climate challenges they face by increasing the food, water and clean energy they have.

Details of Prince Louis’ christening revealed

The 11-week-old, who is fifth in line to the throne, will be baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace.

Prince George, four, and three-year-old Princess Charlotte will be there for their younger brother’s big day.

It will be the first time the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children have been seen together as a family of five.

Kensington Palace has yet to release the guest list, but royal christenings are usually a small, family affair.

Newlyweds the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are likely to put in an appearance, as are Kate’s pregnant sister Pippa Matthews, and her brother James Middleton.

Meghan was christened and confirmed in the Chapel Royal by the Archbishop, who also married the Suits star and Harry at Windsor in May.

Louis’ godparents, who will be announced on the day, will take part in the private 40-minute traditional religious ceremony, which begins at 4pm in the intimate, oak-panelled chapel.

There is speculation the Cambridges, who usually opt for close friends and confidantes, may choose William’s trusted private secretary Miguel Head, who is leaving the post this month, to be a godfather.

They might even turn to one of William’s cousins, Peter Phillips, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie or Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor – a move which would delight the Queen.

The baby…

Archbishop of York dances with joy as England beat Sweden

The Church’s main legislative body is meeting at York this weekend – with almost 500 delegates attending, including bishops, clergy and lay members.

But they agreed to pause the proceedings on Saturday afternoon for the World Cup quarter-final clash between England and Sweden, with picture posted on social media of delegates watching the match on a huge screen in the chamber, at York University.

One attendee, Mark Russell, posted a picture of the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, dancing after Alli’s second-half goal and said the second most important figure in the Church of England prayed for the team.

Mr Russell said: “The General Synod of the Church of England show the #ENGSWE game in the chamber! As our Archbishop prays for the team! This is awesome!”

Dr Sentamu tweeted through the game, singling out Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Alli for his praise and encouragement.

At the end of the match, he posted: “Team England. You have done it and we gladly rejoice! Rest well and know that you are in our prayers! Peace to you all!”

Earlier, the archbishop said on Twitter: “TEAM ENGLAND it’s your time to shine! Ps play the beautiful game as a TEAM: Together Each Achieves More! Take Risks!”

A vicar delegate joked: “A ripple of gentle applause breaks out in the synod chamber after a good pass. Give it half an hour and there’ll be people throwing beer at the screen,…
