Andrew Wommack’s Devotional 8 July 2018 – Seek First The Kingdom

Topic: Seek First The Kingdom [Andrew Wommack Sunday July 8, 2018]

Luke 10:40“But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.”

There are only three instances in Scripture that give us information about Martha. From these accounts, we can see that Martha had a brother named Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, and a sister named Mary. Martha had misplaced her priorities on this occasion and was corrected by Jesus. Later, at a supper for Jesus in the home of Simon the leper, Martha was once again serving while Mary her sister was worshiping Jesus by anointing His feet with a costly perfume.

Martha was the first one to run and meet Jesus when He came to their home after the death of Lazarus. It was at this time that Martha said she knew Jesus could have prevented Lazarus from dying and that, even then, she knew He could raise him from the dead. She made a confession of faith in the deity of Jesus, every bit as strong as Peter’s, which received a blessing from Jesus.

Martha was not wrong in serving Jesus and His disciples. Other women ministered to Jesus in this way without being corrected. Serving was a good thing, but Martha had put it in the wrong place. Her problem was priorities — not what she was doing. It was a great honor to have Jesus in her home and to be able to hear His personal words to her household. Martha should have given this the same priority that Mary did.

Just like Martha, many people today are occupied with things that keep them from hearing the words of Jesus. It is easy to recognize and turn from things that are obviously sin, but even good things that we are involved in must be prioritized so that nothing takes the place of seeking first the kingdom of God.

Billy Graham Devotional 8 July 2018 – Released from Selfishness

Topic: Released from Selfishness [Billy Graham’s Devotional Sunday July 8, 2018]

He must increase, but I must decrease. — John 3:30

Self-centeredness is the basic cause of much of our distress in life. Hypochondria, a mental disorder which is accompanied by melancholy and depression, is often caused by self-pity and self-centeredness. Most of us suffer from spiritual nearsightedness. Our interests, our loves, and our energies are too often focused upon ourselves. Jesus underscored the fact that His disciples were to live outflowingly rather than selfishly. To the rich young ruler He said, “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven” (Matthew 19:21). It wasn’t the giving away of his goods that Jesus demanded, particularly, but that he be released from selfishness, and its devastating effect on his personality and life.

Prayer for the day: Teach me to so completely open my heart to You that there will be no room for self. Cleanse me, Lord, of all selfish thoughts and deeds.

Open Heavens 8 July 2018 – Be Courageous

Topic: Be Courageous [Open Heavens 8th July 2018, Sunday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD. Psalm 31:24

Read: Joshua 1:1-9 (KJV)

1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Bible in One Year: 2 Chronicle 9-10, Acts 24: 1-21

Open Heavens 8 July 2018 MESSAGE:

In the kingdom of God, o be courageous is to have the spiritual, emotional and moral willpower to speak and act without fear in the face of distress or concerns over a threat or challenge being faced. Courage is a cardinal virtue that is required to handle any godly leadership position or spiritual assignment. To underscore the importance of courage, saying like “fear not”, “bee strong” and “be courageous” were used in several passages of the Bible to encourage God’s appointed leaders. For example, God commanded Joshua to be strong and to be of good courage four times in Joshua chapter one alone. In Daniel 10:19, a heavenly being encouraged Daniel saying, “Fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong”. God also encouraged Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Zerubbabel, Jeremiah, Peter, Paul and several others in similar fashion. The Lord will support you, encourage you and grant you the fortitude to overcome every obstacle and challenges of life in Jesus’ Name.

Moreover, God often instructs His children, especially leaders amongst them, to embark on assignments that are new and great, unprecedented, unbelievable, unrealistic and practically impossible by any natural means. The nature of God’s assignments usually strikes fear, doubt and confusion into people’s hearts, making it difficult for them to proceed with such tasks without first receiving divine support and encouragement. Courage therefore derives from the hope and assurance of the divine presence in such circumstances. This was what prompted Moses in Exodus 33:15b to say:

“If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.”

Confronted with the impossible task of leading the Israelites to the Promise Land, he hinged willingness to move forward on the assurance of God’s presence. David also singlehandedly ran through a troop because God was with him (2 Samuel 22:30). I pray that God’s presence will see you through your present challenges and catapult you to your breakthrough in Jesus’ Name.

Courage is demonstrated in various ways, such as leading God’s people against their enemies, proclaiming the gospel to others, and exercising the authority of God’s kingdom in your sphere of influence. God gives strength to His people and enable them to be courageous by giving them faith , God proves Himself faithful to His faithfulness enable His people to trust in Him for sustenance in everyday life. Children of God are created to be the head and not the tail. You were created to take charge as a leader wherever you find yourself. You therefore need to be bold, strong and courageous because that is your heritage in Christ.

Prayer Point: Father, help me to overcome every craving in me that will lead to spiritual death in Jesus’ Name.

Hymn 4: Trust And Obey

1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Texas Pastor Recounts Miraculous Healing From Cerebral Malaria Contracted on Mission Trip

Screengrab/WFAA)Steve and Karen Lawson recount his bout with cerebral malaria while overseas on a mission trip.

A Dallas-area pastor is recounting his miraculous healing following a diagnosis of cerebral malaria, having contracted the deadly condition from exposure to mosquitoes during a mission trip in Nigeria.

Steve Lawson, a pastor based in Greenville, Texas — approximately 50 miles from Dallas — fell ill in late May after having wrapped up a trip to West Africa.

Lawson met his wife of 29 years, Karen, in Siberia for the next leg of his overseas trip — he trains pastors in remote parts of the world — and she could soon tell something was wrong, they told local ABC News affiliate WFAA in a report on Thursday.

“I tried to wake him up, but he wouldn’t wake up. And he didn’t know me, like his eyes were open but he didn’t recognize me. He was saying words that didn’t mean anything,” Karen Lawson recounted.

The pastor fell into a coma and physicians there said he had cerebral malaria, likely contracted from a mosquito bite in West Africa. He stayed in a coma for 10 days.

Due to lack of treatment available, Lawson was medevacked to Europe for medical care.

“When Karen said we were in Paris, I was like, ‘What are we doing in Paris?’ I didn’t realize I’d lost almost two weeks,” Steve said.

All the while, the Lawson’s were receiving a tremendous outpouring of support and prayers through social media.

Some 3,000 Nigerian Christians Have Been Displaced Due to Muslim Slaughter of 6,000 People Since Start of 2018 – Urban Christian News

Nigerian Christians were have been displaced by the thousands due to mass slaughter in the villages surrounding Jos in Plateau state are in a “living hell” and agony, a watchdog group assisting the victims said.

“The displaced Christians were in a pathetic situation,” an Open Doors USA worker, identified as Kerrie, said on Tuesday.

“Life has become a living hell for them. They have lost loved ones, houses, and all they labored for in the twinkling of an eye. The agony they are going through is hard to describe.

“We saw people who were still in a haze over what they have just gone through. Children were crying hysterically, perhaps because of hunger or perhaps because of hunger and the trauma.”

Open Doors, which along with some indigenous churches is helping bring aid to the people in the area, estimates that at least 3,000 believers were displaced by the slaughter of over 200 people in a series of raids at the end of June.

Christian leaders in Nigeria have said that as many as 6,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed by Muslim Fulani herdsmen since the start of the year.

“What is happening in Plateau state and other select states in Nigeria is pure genocide and must be stopped immediately,” said the Christian Association of Nigeria and church denominational heads in Plateau State last week.

“We are particularly worried at the widespread insecurity in the country where wanton attacks and killings by armed Fulani herdsmen, bandits and terrorists have been taking place on a daily basis in our communities unchallenged despite huge investments…

Chick-fil-A Ranks as America’s Top Fast Food Restaurant for Customer Satisfaction

(Photo: Reuters/Rashid Umar Abbasi)Commuters walk past a Chick-fil-A freestanding franchise in Midtown, New York, October 3, 2015.

The annual survey released recently by the American Customer Satisfaction Index  pertaining to restaurants reveals that Chick-fil-A has again emerged as the top-rated fast food joint.

Chick-fil-A finished with a score of 87 on ACSI’s 100-point scale, placing it well ahead of its competitors, including Panera Bread which was given a score of 81 and Subway, which was the only other fast food chain to break into the 80s.

Rounding out the rest of the top five in the customer satisfaction rankings for fast food establishments are Arby’s at 79, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts received similar marks of 78.

For Chick-fil-A, finishing atop the ACSI’s customer satisfaction ratings is nothing new.

The chain was also the leader in the rankings last year and in 2016, notching a score of 87 both times.

The last time Chick-fil-A finished with a score lower than 87 was back in 2015, which coincidentally was the same year the chain first made an appearance in ACSI’s rankings. At the time, the 86 mark was the highest ever achieved by a fast food restaurant.

The ACSI credits Chick-fil-A’s “product focus” as something…

At Least 9 Killed, 13 Wounded in Attack on Somalia’s Interior Ministry – Urban Christian News

A least nine people were killed in an attack on Somalia’s interior ministry and security forces killed all three attackers after a two-hour gun battle inside, police said Saturday, as the al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility.

A number of people, mostly government workers, were trapped in the ministry on what had been a normal business day. Witnesses said some staffers died or were injured while leaping from windows or walls in an effort to escape.

At least 13 people were wounded, paramedic Mohamed Adam said.

The morning attack began when a suicide car bomber detonated at the gates of the interior ministry compound, which is close to the presidential palace and parliament headquarters and also holds the security ministry, police Capt. Mohamed Hussein told The Associated Press.

Dozens of people eventually were rescued in the operation, Hussein said, as ambulance sirens echoed and soldiers opened fire to disperse bystanders and motorists.

The Somalia-based al-Shabab, an arm of al-Qaida, often targets high-profile areas of the capital, Mogadishu. The group was blamed for the October truck bombing that killed more than 500 people in the deadliest attack in the country’s history.

Bananas in Madagascar May Hold Key to the Fruit Surviving the Panama Disease

Photo by Lotte Löhr on UnsplashBananas could be at risk of going extinct due to the harmful effects of the Panama Disease

Banana crops are facing a mortal threat from the Panama Disease, and to ensure that the fruit remains available worldwide, scientists will be looking to Madagascar.

Richard Allen, a senior conservation assessor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, said that the bananas growing in Madagascar haven’t been afflicted with the Panama Disease, the BBC reports.

Because of that, Allen theorized that the Madagascan banana might possess certain genetic traits that have enabled it to fend off the disease.

Allen noted that he and the other scientists still can’t be sure of what the Madagascan banana has until they can conduct research on it, which is why he’s pushing for it to be conserved. Kew researchers who traveled to Madagascar discovered that the banana plant they were looking for was almost extinct.

Dr. Hélène Ralimanana of the Kew Madagascar Conservation Centre added that conserving the Madagascan banana “can offer an opportunity to find a gene to improve the cultivated banana.”

The BBC report adds that while the Madagascan banana itself is not palatable, cross-breeding it with other variants of the fruit could lead to the production of bananas that are “edible and resilient.”

Scientists from Wageningen University & Research along with their colleagues abroad have determined that the Panama Disease is capable of infecting a plant’s roots, destroying its vascular system and eventually killing the plant itself, Phys.org reported.

The disease has already affected different…

UK oil and gas chaplaincy holds service to mark 30 years since Piper Alpha disaster

A minute’s silence was been held in memory of the 167 men who lost their lives in the Piper Alpha disaster on 6th July 1988.

Loved ones and colleagues of those who died listened as each worker’s name was read aloud at the Piper Alpha memorial statue in Hazlehead Park.

A piper played a lament and prayers were said before wreaths were laid by Aberdeen Lord Provost Barney Crockett and Oil and Gas UK chief executive Deirdre Michie.

Michal Wachucik/PA Wire

Wreaths were also placed at the statue by Baroness Goldie, representing the UK Government, and Scotland’s Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse.

Members of the public then queued to lay flowers they had brought, many of them wiping away tears.

Michal Wachucik/PA Wire

Rev Gordon Craig, chaplain to the UK offshore oil and gas industry, told those gathered: “Thirty years ago tonight, 167 men died in the worst disaster to befall the oil and gas industry.

“It was a night that changed many, many things. For the families at the heart of the tragedy, life would never be the same, as they were forced to cope without loved ones and the hole that was left in their lives.

“So many families living in the city knew others – friends, neighbours, colleagues – who were directly caught up in the events of July 6 1988.

“To this day, many can tell you…

Bishop highlights Norfolk’s role in tackling refugee crisis

As the Syrian conflict continues to force people to flee their homes Rt Rev Graham James praised Norfolk for its leadership in welcoming refugees to the local area.

Norfolk County Council has accepted 50 Syrian refugees as part of the government’s Syrian Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme.

“While it is no longer front-page news, as the devastating war in Syria continues into its eighth year, the need to provide sanctuary to refugees grows,” he said.

“Norfolk has a great tradition of welcoming refugees, and it’s been incredible to see the outpouring of kindness and support from Norfolk’s faith groups, charities and local businesses for refugees since the crisis began. Our culture and economy benefit from embracing them into our community.

“We are proud to welcome refugees to Norfolk and I urge communities around the UK to do the same.”

One Syrian refugee, Mohamed Eldaly, spoke about his experience leaving Aleppo two years ago to resettle in Norwich. Having arrived unable to speak English, two years later Eldaly is now studying for his master’s degree in Molecular Medicine at the University of East Anglia.

During the meeting at Norwich Cathedral on Friday Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman spoke about his recent visit to Lebanon where he met with Syrian refugees and saw the impact of UK aid.

The MP…
