He was given the prize for best leading actor in a play, for playing a young gay man living with Aids in the sprawling, seven-hour revival Angels In America.
Garfield dedicated the win to the LGBTQ community, who he said fought and died for the right to love. He said the play is a rejection of bigotry, shame and oppression.
“We are all sacred and we all belong,” Garfield said.
He then referenced last week’s US Supreme Court decision stating: “(Let’s) just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.”
His comments were met with a rousing applause.
Judges at the Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 in favour of Jack Phillips last week.
They said his rights had been violated under the first amendment.
They also suggested the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, who took the case against Phillips, showed hostility to religion.

Megachurch Pastor J.D. Greear of Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, delivered a sermon about some of the most difficult questions he has about God in his heart ahead of the Southern Baptist Convention later this week, where he has been nominated for president.
Greear preached on Sunday at Jack Graham’s Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, where he received a glowing endorsement by the latter.
Graham noted that Greear has been highly successful in growing his ministry, taking the Summit Church from a 300 membership to over 10,000 in weekly attendance in multiple locations.
At the same time, it has focused its efforts on missions and sending people to preach the Gospel.
“I don’t know of any other church anywhere that is putting more people on the missions field, and planting churches, like the Summit Church,” Graham said in the introduction.
“He is a leader’s leader. I am hopeful, prayerful, and confident that this week the SBC will elect him as our next president,” he said of Greear.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter, who announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in January, has submitted a planning application for the Saxon-style structure to Suffolk Coastal District Council.
But a string of concerns have been raised, including from Suffolk Wildlife Trust which said there were records of great crested newts in the area in 2015 and it is possible that ponds within the site boundaries “could be breeding sites for this species”.
Great crested newts, Britain’s largest newt species, have declined over recent years and are now legally protected.
It is illegal to disturb the animals or obstruct access to areas where they live and breed, with the protected area extending up to 500m from their breeding ponds, the wildlife trust said.
Paul Smith, of Apex Planning Consultants, said: “The applicant has responded promptly to this matter and has also commissioned an appropriate survey that will identify the presence of great crested newts or otherwise, propose mitigation measures as appropriate and recommend measures to enhance biodiversity.”
These could include bat boxes, swift nesting boxes and native planting, he said.
“We were not aware of the historical presence of great crested newts nearby and certainly believe that none exist in the pond nearby to the application site,” he added.

Christian clergy in the United Kingdom are experiencing an increase in violence and verbal attacks with the rise of secularism and other changing societal factors, experts have assessed ahead of a nationwide survey.
The Sunday Telegraph pointed out that four Church of England priests have been murdered since 1997, ahead of a national survey of around 7,000 Church of England clergy to be conducted by the Royal Holloway, University of London, later in June.
The last survey of its kind in 2000 found that as many as 12 percent of all clergy had been assaulted in the previous two years.
Professor Jonathan Gabe at Royal Holloway’s School of Law said that “the declining status of clergy” could be making it easier for clergy to be attacked, along with the “increasing secularization” in British society.

A Vatican statement said Francis had accepted the resignations of Bishop Juan Barros of Osorno, as well as Bishop Gonzalo Duarte of Valparaiso and Bishop Cristian Caro of Puerto Montt.
Of the three, only the 61-year-old Barros is below the retirement age of 75.
Barros has been at the centre of Chile’s growing scandal ever since Francis appointed him bishop of Osorno in 2015, even though he had been a lieutenant of Chile’s most notorious paedophile priest, Fernando Karadima, and had been accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring their abuse.
He denies the charges, but he joined 30 of Chile’s other active bishops in offering their resignations to Francis at an extraordinary Vatican summit last month.
Francis had summoned Chile’s church leaders to Rome after realising he had made “grave errors in judgment” about Barros, whom he had defended strongly during his troubled visit to Chile in January.
Barros’ removal, which had been expected, was met with praise by abuse survivors and Catholics in Osorno. But they warned that more resignations and actions must follow to heal the devastation wrought by the scandal.

With Southern Baptists already comparing the state of their denomination to a natural disaster, another dramatic turn has come in the sexual abuse and misconduct scandal swirling around Paige Patterson, a revered institutional leader.
Patterson, fired recently from his post at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, announced Friday (June 8) that he won’t deliver the sermon at the convention’s annual meeting in Dallas next week, while denying that the events that led to his dismissal have been accurately portrayed.
“I have now respectfully requested to be released from this high privilege because I do not want my role as a preacher to detract in any way from the important business of our convention and because my desire is to work toward biblical harmony at our annual meeting,” Patterson said in a Friday (June 8) statement.
“Recently, I have been accused, publicly and privately, of a number of things — none of which I acknowledge as having done in the way portrayed, and others that I am confident I absolutely did not do,” he said.

Tens of thousands of people flocked to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Sunday evening for Harvest America 2018, which included gospel music and a message by Southern California Pastor Greg Laurie, who invited the crowd to respond to the Gospel.
Laurie, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, shared about his difficult childhood, and how he got into drugs and alcohol. “I was going downhill fast … I was too cynical, too hard … but Christ changed my life one day. I didn’t plan on it, but it happened,” he said.
In today’s culture, he continued, people think they can be happy only if they get rich and famous. But, he added, the “bottom line” is that “fame and wealth, possessions, all the things this world has to offer … will not make you happy.”
In one week alone, he said, two celebrities — television personality Anthony Bourdain and fashion icon Kate Spade — took their own lives. Last year, 45,000 Americans took their lives, he added.
