On the Pilgrim Trail Across England, 400 Years After the Mayflower, Part 4

(PHOTO: DENNIS LENNOX)The old harbor of Plymouth, where the Pilgrims departed on the Mayflower for the New World in 1620.

I went on a week-long road trip across England to discover the places the Pilgrims would have known ahead of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s sailing to the New World in 2020.

My last stop, quite fittingly, was Plymouth.

Without a doubt, this town in southwest England is the place, fairly or not, most Americans associate with the story of the Pilgrims.

However, anyone with a basic understanding of history knows Plymouth’s connection to the Pilgrims and the Mayflower came about by accident. Call it a fluke of history.

To be clear: Plymouth’s part in the Pilgrim story wasn’t unimportant. Far from it, actually. While it’s impossible to speculate on just how differently the story would be had it not been for that fluke of history, it’s a given that Plymouth wouldn’t have been the namesake of Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts.

Neither the Pilgrims nor the Mayflower were from Plymouth. But they sailed from here after failing on their first attempt to cross the Atlantic in the late summer of 1620.

The Pilgrims, split between the Mayflower and a second ship, were 300 miles off the English coast when leaks on the all-but-forgotten Speedwell were so bad they had to return to port to avoid a disaster on the high seas.

After calling upon nearby Dartmouth, where some repairs on the Speedwell were carried out before their first departure, they arrived in Plymouth, which by then was long-established as a major port and fortification. (It was from Plymouth that Sir…

China & Russia Solidify Growing Eastern Bloc as Trump Rattles G-7 – Urban Christian News

As U.S. President Donald Trump left the Group of Seven nations in turmoil this weekend, China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin were putting on a very different show on the other side of the world.

On Sunday, Xi and Putin toasted the expansion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, an eight-member bloc designed to coordinate security policies across Asia. The group, which welcomed new members India and Pakistan, as well as the presidents of Iran and Mongolia, pledged to increase cooperation on energy and agriculture and create more favorable conditions on trade and investment.

The carefully choreographed affair contrasted with the discord in Canada, as Trump disavowed the G-7’s joint statement and criticized his host, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Even as the scope of the breakdown over U.S. tariffs became clear, Xi was taking the podium to criticize what he said were new forms of “unilateralism” and “protectionism.”

“We oppose the practice of sacrificing other countries’ security for their own absolute security,” Xi told a gathering of the SCO’s heads of state in the Chinese port of Qingdao. “We need to reject selfish, short-sighted and closed policies, uphold the rules of the World Trade Organization, support the multilateral trading system and build an open world economy.”

China’s state-run media had fun with the contrasting images of the feuding democratic states and the orderly proceedings of the China- and Russian-led bloc. The English-language Twitter of account of the Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper posted photos of…

Disneyland Paris Enters Marvel Universe With Avengers Theme – Urban Christian News

Helicopters, concept cars and SWAT teams shrouded in smoke heralded the launch of the first Avengers-themed season at Disneyland Paris following the announcement of plans for a $2.5 billion park expansion that will feature Marvel superheroes.

Movie and sports stars, including French Olympians Teddy Riner and Camille Lacourt, attended an official opening Saturday night for the season that brings the Disneyland resorts a step closer to merging its traditional cast of characters with the Marvel universe.

It follows similar moves in Hong Kong Disneyland as well as in the Disney California Adventure.

“We are delighted to have the Avengers assemble in Disneyland Paris for the first time ever,” Euro Disney President Catherine Powell said. “They’re here to delight thrill and surprise you with incredible action and amazing special effects.”

Actors glided down ropes from a hovering helicopter before Spiderman, the Hulk, Ironman, Thor, Captain America and other Marvel characters took the stage for several shows.

“It’s really spectacular,” said “The Beach” actress Virginie Ledoyen, who watched the action.

Behind the special effects and celebrity guests were hard-negotiated business plans.

The Paris park’s expansion into Marvel terrain was unveiled earlier this year following a meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Disney Chairman Robert Iger.

Disney Group said the makeover of Walt Disney Studios Park, one of the two theme parks that make up Disneyland Paris, will be rolled out in phases beginning in 2020. It includes three new areas based on Marvel…

Memorial service held to mark Grenfell Tower fire anniversary

The Bishop of London and London’s mayor joined people to remember the victims of the blaze that killed 72 people.

Following the Bishop of Kensington’s preaching at St Clement’s Church, near Shepherd’s Bush, Bishop Sarah Mullally and Sadiq Khan planted shrubs outside the church in a garden for “healing and peace” that was dedicated to the people who died.

Speaking to Sky, Bishop Sarah explained what the purpose of the garden is.

“It is a place of blessing. It will be a place of healing and of prayer. But also a place in which people can find time and space as they begin to find healing and justice after the devastation of the last year.”

Meanwhile, the government promised to permanently re-house survivors within a year, but dozens of families remain in temporary accommodation.

Housing minister Dominic Raab says the council’s bought over 300 new properties – but apologised for the delay.

Evangelicals being ‘forced out’ of Church of England for being gay

Jayne Ozanne, an influential Church of England evangelical who is gay, has promised to raise the issue at the General Synod next month and ask whether churches are breaching the official guidelines of the House of Bishops.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she had “learnt of dozens of cases recently” and said she expected a #MeToo” moment for the Church to be stirred up.

Ozanne and six other gay churchgoers shared accounts of their treatment to the newspaper.

One of the Christians in her thirties said she was forced to leave her church in London after being threatened with damnation when her priest suspected she was having a lesbian love affair.

“He told me I had to stop this relationship immediately. I could have the thoughts, but not act. I was a Sunday club leader, a women’s study group leader. I was booted out within three weeks,” the woman who wished to remain anonymous said.

Despite moving to a different evangelical church that is more accepting of gay people, she is still excluded from any leadership role.

“In Britain most people would think this could happen in an extreme Muslim environment,” she said. “They don’t think fundamentalist Christians would behave like that.”

Others shared stories of being allowed to stay in their churches but removed from all positions of responsibility where they served in different departments – including making tea and coffee.

Catholic Church opens first anti-abortion campaign office in Scotland

Senior cleric, Archbishop Leo Cushley, cut the ribbon at the opening of the new Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh Pro-Life Office in Edinburgh, just three days after the Republic of Ireland voted to overturn a ban on the procedure.

Speaking to the Sunday Herald, Archbishop Cushley said the new office would aim to build a “democratic consensus” around “legislative change” in Scotland, where terminations are permitted during the first 24 weeks.

The office – which is the first of its kind in Scotland – is headed up by a “Pro-Life Officer” who will be tasked with co-ordinating a network of volunteers in 103 parishes which make up the archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

Reflecting on the results of the recent referendum in The Republic of Ireland, Archbishop Cushley said: “One of the many lessons of the recent referendum in Ireland is that those of us who seek to promote a culture of life have a distance to go in terms of winning over hearts and minds to the pro-life cause and that, really, is one of the key tasks of our new pro-life office.

“Whether it be in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland or Scotland, legislative change will only follow the building of a democratic consensus around a culture of life, and that will only come if those of us who are pro-life can articulate our case with an intellectual coherence that is coupled to a deep compassion…

Rise in violence and verbal abuse against clergy prompts survey

Academics at Royal Holloway, University of London, are set to test the theory later this month when the survey around 7,000 Church of England clergy after receiving £5,000 in funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The experts were prompted to conduct the survey after a previous survey that looked at violence against clergy, published by Royal Holloway in 2000, found that 12 per cent of clergy had been assaulted in the previous two years.

Rev David MacGeogh, the vicar of Glastonbury, told The Sunday Telegraph that a month seldom passes without his receiving verbal abuse.

“People come in before and during the service and rant and rave, saying we are the works of Satan,” he said, adding that there was “no support system” for clergy facing abuse.

The survey, which will be available online this month, will ask clergy whether they have experienced verbal abuse, threats or physical violence in the last two years, and how often their church property is damaged.

They will also be asked whether they have received abuse online and whether they have noticed more violence being carried out against clergy now that almost a third of them are women.

A Church of England spokesman said: “We take the welfare and safety of our clergy very seriously indeed.

“Verbal abuse, threats or assaults are completely unacceptable and we would urge clergy subjected…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 10 June 2018 Devotional — Four Principles for Successful Daily Living

Topic: Four Principles for Successful Daily Living [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Sunday June 10, 2018]

Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. — Philippians 2:4

I enjoy just reading over this passage and soaking up the power from its principles for successful daily living. It gives four specific principles for those who want to enjoy life:

1. Keep your tongue free from evil. God’s Word states clearly, the power of life and death is in the mouth. We can bring blessing or misery into our lives with our words. When we speak rashly we often get into arguments, so choose your words carefully.

2. Turn away from wickedness. We must take action to remove ourselves from wickedness or from a wicked environment. The action we must take could mean altering our friendships; it could even mean loneliness for a period of time. But you can always trust God to be with you.

3. Do right. The decision to do right must follow the decision to stop doing wrong. Both are definite choices. Repentance is twofold; it requires turning away from sin and turning to righteousness.

4. Search for peace. Notice that we must search for it, pursue it, and go after it. We cannot merely desire peace without any accompanying action, but instead we must desire peace with action. We need to search for peace in our relationship with God and with others.

When I started living by these principles, not only did my relationships improve, but so did my health, my attitude, and all areas of my life. The same will be true for you.

Prayer Starter: Father, Your Word has all of the answers for a great life. Help me to put Your principles into practice, today and every day. I can’t do it alone—I can only do it through Your strength. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
