The Church of Scotland urges government to end fuel poverty

Fifty groups from across Scotland – including the Kirk – have joined forces to persuade politicians to “ensure that Scotland gets the Warm Homes Bill it was promised and that it deserves”.

A total of 649,000 households in Scotland are struggling to keep their homes warm, which is just over 25 per cent of all properties. This means these households need to spend at least 10 per cent of their income to keep their properties warm.

Adrian Shaw from the Church of Scotland explained to Premier what needs to be done to keep people warm.

Speaking during News Hour, he said: “There’s a huge range of issues to be addressed here but at the centre of it, are that our homes are just not well enough built and well enough insulated to be able to keep everybody warm at an affordable cost.”

The groups, led by the Existing Homes Alliance, fear the Scottish Government’s planned Warm Homes Bill will be a missed opportunity, unless steps are taken to beef up the legislation.

Lori McElroy, chair of the Existing Homes Alliance, said: “More than a quarter of Scottish households are still living in fuel poverty – the same proportion who faced cold homes a decade ago – and over a million homes fall below the energy efficiency standard needed for our health.

“All political parties agree this is unacceptable in a modern, wealthy country. The promised Warm Homes Bill represented a once in a…

Moving Photo Shows Atlanta Braves Fan Shielding JROTC Member from Rain

Moving Photo Shows Atlanta Braves Fan Shielding JROTC Member from Rain

A powerful image is capturing attention today. The photo shows a fan at the Atlanta Braves game at SunTrust park holding an umbrella over a JROTC cadet while it rained.

The JROTC member, dressed in uniform, was standing near the Braves’ POW-MIA Chair of Honor at the ballpark. The fan, dressed in a red raincoat, shielded the service member from the rain during Monday’s Memorial Day game between the Braves and the New York Mets.

The photo was shared by the Braves and captioned with the word “Respect.” The image quickly received attention for the moving gesture of honor to a service member, especially on Memorial Day, the day set aside to honor those who serve the nation.

A Braves fan also posted the photo from another angle, captioning her photo: “They sacrifice so much for us, we can sacrifice for them too!!!”

Fox News reports that the plaque near the Chair of Honor where the JROTC member was standing was dedicated at the ballpark last year and reads:

“Since World War I more than 92,000 American soldiers are unaccounted for. This unoccupied seat is dedicated to the memory of…

Vacation Bible School Still Popular Among Parents, Even Non-Churchgoers

(Courtesy of First Baptist Nashville)2008 VBS – Outrigger Island

Vacation Bible School continues to be popular among American parents, even those who don’t regularly attend church, according to a recent report by LifeWay Research.

“Six in 10 Americans say they went to VBS growing up. Two-thirds of American parents say they plan to send kids to VBS this summer — even if they skip church themselves,” said LifeWay in a report released last week, titled “Even If They Don’t Go to Church, Americans Still Love VBS.”

LifeWay found that 60 percent of parents plan to send their children to VBS programs held at a church that they do not attend while 69 percent said they would send their child to a VBS program at a different church if their child was invited by a friend.

“Each week of the summer there are thousands of VBS programs going on around America,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research, in a statement released last Thursday. “It’s one of the things that people love about church.”

‘Our commitment to unborn children remains unchanged’

Cardinal Nichols released a statement supporting the Archbishops of Armagh and Dublin, and their statements regarding changes to the Republic of Ireland’s constitution as a result of the public vote.

The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales said: “Our commitment to mothers and their unborn children remains unchanged. We must do all we can to ensure that the deliberate taking of an unborn human life is not an option that anyone would choose.

“The denial of life to another human being, a brother or sister, is an wrong that harms our fragile humanity. We work and pray for the day when this truth is widely accepted and laws permitting abortion are seen for what they are.

“Our pro-life convictions have to be consistently expressed in action, in support of women who are trapped in difficult and painful circumstances and in support of the children they are carrying.

“May God bless Ireland and its generous hearted people. May that love, in every family, be a protection for the unborn, whatever the law may now permit.”

Sixty-six per cent of voters in the Republic of Ireland on Friday backed the repeal of an amendment to the constitution, which outlaws abortion in all but exceptional circumstances.

An attack in the city of Liege, Belgium which left three people dead is being investigated as an act of terrorism, according to CNN.

The suspect has been killed in a shootout with police after he took refuge in a local high school where he also was holding a woman hostage.

Several police officers were injured in the attack and two are dead after the suspect stabbed them. The assailant also confiscated one of the officer’s firearm and used it to open fire at a parked vehicle, hitting and killing the driver inside.

The attack took place at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. EST). Authorities are investigating the possible motive for the attack, but they are treating it as a possible terrorist attack.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and Belgium’s King Philippe are reportedly traveling to Liege to assess the situation.

The Belgian Royal Palace tweeted following the attack: “Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. Courage to their loved ones.”

Pastor’s Wife Hides Husband from Hindu Extremists Seeking to Kill Him in Northern India

Pastor’s Wife Hides Husband from Hindu Extremists Seeking to Kill Him in Northern India

In an attack on a church service in northern India that left a 55-year-old man unconscious, the wife of a pastor hid her husband after Hindu extremists said they would kill him, sources said.

Women and children were not spared in the attack by 25 masked extremists armed with wooden sticks last month on the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Baburia Khera, Uttar Pradesh state, after which police treated church members as criminals.

“They were looking for the pastor, saying, ‘We will kill him today,’” pastor Kamlesh Kumar’s wife, identified only as Shashikala, told Morning Star News. Her voice shaking, she said, “We had hidden him inside a room and locked the room from outside. They went on hunting for him everywhere. This is how we were able to save his life.”

Ram Prasad, 55, tried to stop the attackers from hitting congregation members in the April 29 assault, and the Hindu extremists seized him and beat him until he lost his consciousness, she said.

“I saw Ram Prasad fall on the floor bleeding profusely after being hit by a brick, but the attackers continued kicking him and hitting him with wooden sticks until he lay motionless on the floor,” Shashikala said.

The masked men forced their way into neighboring homes in search of Pastor Kumar, terrifying the resident women and girls.

“They manhandled…

Christian campaigner on violence slams England footballer over gun tattoo

The 23-year-old, who plays for Manchester City, posted a picture of himself training with his England team-mates at St George’s Park, with a tattoo of an assault rifle on his right calf clearly visible.

Pastor Pastor Peter Nembhard who leads ARC church in London and has led many anti-violence campaigns has expressed disappointment with the footballer.

Speaking on Premier’s News Hour, he said: “It’s irresponsible particularly in the present climate with the lives that have been taken this year through gun and knife crime.”

Sterling, who will compete at the World Cup in Russia this summer has alluded to the tattoo having a “deeper meaning”.

In a post on Instagram, he said: “When I was 2 my father died from being gunned down to death I made a promise to myself I would never touch a gun in my life time, I shoot with my right foot so it has a deeper meaning N still unfinished.”

Pastor Nembhard is still hopeful something good can come out of this.

“It’s his body and he can do whatever he wants but it’s the message he sends out,” he said. “But if he says it’s not finished – maybe he’ll complete it by saying ‘no to guns’ and that would be a very good message.”

Sterling has received lots of criticism.

Lucy Cope, who founded Mothers Against Guns after her son Damian was shot dead outside a club in central London in July 2002, said the ink was “totally unacceptable” and called…

Westminster Abbey gallery revamp unveiled

Officials have given a sneak peek at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries, which sits more than 16 metres (52ft) above the abbey’s floor and will display 300 treasures from the abbey’s collection.

Visitors will reach the gallery, which opens on June 11, through a new tower housing a staircase and lift.

It is the first major addition to the abbey church since 1745 and is part of a £22.9 million, privately funded development project aimed at giving a more generous welcome to the two million visitors and worshippers who go to the abbey annually.

The Very Rev Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster, said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the galleries.

“The views are breathtaking. The space astonishing. The displays fascinating.

“The visitor will gain far greater insight into the life and history of the abbey than ever before.

“The fulfilment of this vision is a shared achievement, with so many people involved. We are profoundly grateful.”

Two television journalists killed as Alberto makes landfall

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have met in the NBA Finals the last three years. Now they’ll meet again, after the Warriors defeated the Houston Rockets last night. The Cavaliers’ LeBron James will be playing in his eighth-straight championship series.

When the playoffs began, these were the teams favored to reach the finals. It seems fitting that they will compete once again for the title.

In other news, however, the world seems anything but fair.

Mike McCormick and Aaron Smeltzer of NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville, South Carolina, were killed yesterday as Subtropical Storm Alberto swept ashore on Florida’s Panhandle. The storm spread as far as North Carolina, where a tree fell on their vehicle. Forecasters expect heavy rain and flooding today.

In other weather news, Ellicott City, a community of 66,000 in Maryland, is dealing with its second devastating flood in two years. One official spoke for many: “My heart is broken thinking about what people are going through here, and the people’s lives who were devastated two years ago and they rebuilt, and now they’re faced with the same daunting task again.”

And lava from Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea volcano has reached the Puna Geothermal Venture plant. Though officials were prepared, a rupture could set off an explosion, releasing hydrogen sulfide and other dangerous gases into the environment.

Today’s news reminds us that we are not in control of our world–and never were.

“You, O Lord, are God alone”

Eight centuries before Christ, the Assyrian Empire was the world’s great superpower. Their armies captured the ten northern tribes of Israel and threatened to destroy Jerusalem.

Isaiah 22 describes the city’s preparations for the coming siege.

Residents diverted water into a pool inside the city (v. 9) and fortified their walls (v. 10). Then they “made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool” (v. 11a), digging a tunnel from the Gihon…
