Charging Visitors: Church or Tourist Attraction?

(PHOTO: COURTESY OF NORTH END WATERFRONT)Old North Church in Boston

It’s been controversial for years, though many visitors to the famous cathedrals are used to buying a ticket.

Now, the trend toward charging admission is spreading to historic parish churches.

Among the latest churches to charge visitors is a notable Episcopalian church in Boston, the Episcopal Church’s official mouthpiece reported.

Old North Church was made famous by Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride to warn colonists about the impending march by British soldiers to Lexington and Concord on the eve of what became the American Revolution in 1775. As Longfellow immortalized in his poem, “One if by land, and two if by sea.”

The 18th century building is still an active house of worship, but the congregation is no longer able to support the significant costs associated with a building predating the country’s independence.

The church receives approximately 500,000 visitors a year, according to its own figures.

“That’s a lot of wear and tear on the building,” Old North’s rector, the Rev. Stephen Ayers, told Episcopal News Service. “We’ve managed as long as we can by cutting corners, but that’s not enough to keep the place going.”

Hundreds of other congregations across the United States face the same issue. This is particularly true in some of the older denominations that are more likely to have…

12 Killed, 33 Wounded in Bombing at Afghanistan Mosque

A bomb blast inside a mosque in eastern Afghanistan that was being used as a voter registration center killed at least 12 people and wounded 33, officials said.

Habib Shah Ansari, the provincial head of public health, confirmed the toll from the attack, which took place in the city of Khost, the capital of the province of the same name.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but both the Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate reject democratic elections and have targeted them in the past. IS is not known to have a presence in Khost, but has expanded its footprint into other areas in recent years.

Last month, an Islamic State suicide bomber attacked a voter registration center in Kabul, killing 60 people and wounding at least 130 others.

Afghanistan plans to hold elections in October, the first since 2014.

The Taliban and IS have launched a relentless wave of attacks since the start of the year, killing scores of civilians in the capital, Kabul, and elsewhere. Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the groups since the U.S. and NATO concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014, switching to a counterterrorism and support role.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a vehicle carrying shopkeepers on their way to a market struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s northern Faryab province, killing seven of them. Police spokesman Karim Yuresh said another civilian was wounded in Sunday’s attack, in an area where both the Taliban and IS are active.

In the eastern Paktia province, a car bomb killed two people and wounded another three. Abdullah Hsart, the…

4 Asian Countries Pass Laws Banning Religious Conversions

Four countries in South and Southeast Asia have laws that ban conversion of their citizens away from the majority religion, and two other countries are considering implementing the legislation, apart from numerous other nations in the region that prohibit blasphemy and apostasy, aimed mostly at Christian missionary work.

On Tuesday, Alliance Defending Freedom’s international wing will present a white paper on laws regulating conversions at the Policy Briefing on the Global Crisis in Religious Freedom with U.S. Ambassador Samuel Brownback.

Commonly known as anti-conversion laws, the legislation regulates the act of converting to another religion through vaguely defined terms of “inducement,” “force” or “fraudulent means,” according to the paper. These words could be meant to include social work, praying for the sick or even evangelism.

These laws are in place in parts of India and throughout Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan, while Sri Lanka and one province in Pakistan have yet to pass a similar bill. Barring the bill in Pakistan, where minority religions are allegedly being protected through the legislation, the legislation is based on the premise that majority religion is under a threat. As a result, it incites violence.

“No person or group should live in fear of being killed, tortured, or oppressed because of their religious beliefs. The rise of anti-conversion laws worldwide testifies to a growing crisis in religious freedom,” Balakrishnan Baskaran, Legal Consultant to ADF International in India, was quoted as saying.

Last month, the North Indian state of…

Pray for Pleasant View First Baptist Church

Location: Pleasant View, Tennessee

Pastor: Brad Shockley

Weekly Worship: 10:45 AM, Central

Fast Facts: In April of 1973, Joelton Baptist officially started a mission church which would become Pleasant View First Baptist as we know it today. Bro. George Clark, a Texas minister coming to work for what was then the Baptist Sunday School Board (now Lifeway Christian Resources), became the first pastor in May 1973. Remaining the pastor for 30 years, Bro. George was one of only three to carry that role since its beginning. Three years ago the church suffered a split that left the remaining members discouraged and unhopeful of recovering. However, through that difficulty God brought revitalization. By focusing outward and upward, the church has grown to an average of 140 on Sunday mornings. More important than the numerical growth, there is a spirit of love and unity pervading the fellowship. Please pray for continued outreach events and emphases at the church. Finally, pray for wisdom as the church continues to develop different ways to connect with its community.

Teens Open Heavens 6 May 2018 – Watch Your Steps

Topic: Watch Your Steps [Teens Open Heavens 6, May 2018]

Memorise: Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Psalm 119:133

Read: Psalm 37:23 (KJV)

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

Bible In One Year: 1 Kings 12-13, Luke 24:36-53

MESSAGE:

Our steps move us forward or backward depending on which direction we take. Your steps today will determine where you will be tomorrow. The step of clubbing is regressive step, having a boyfriend or a girlfriend is regressive step. Some steps may look nice to take, but look at it very well, is it a regressive or progressive step? Any step you cannot proudly tell your God fearing pastor about is a regressive one.

It seems fashionable to be the most popular boy or girl in school. You may want to be known as the most social boy or girl around, but you must be careful. In chasing popularity, take the right steps. It is better to be popular as the most brilliant girl in school than as the best dancer at clubs. Your future matters more than your present. Many of the popular play boys and girls when I was in school then are now ashamed to speak or show themselves amongst our mates. While others were taking steps that will lead them to greatness in the future, they were taking steps that led them to a poor future. Watch your steps!

Key Point: The steps you take today will eventually lead you to the life you will live tomorrow

Hymn 16
1. Christian, seek not yet repose,
Hear thy gracious Savior say;
Thou art in the midst of foes:
Watch and pray.

2. Principalities and power,
Mustering their unseen array,
Wait for the unguarded hours:
Watch and pray.

3. Gird the heavenly armor on,
Wear it ever night and day;
Ambushed lies the evil one:
Watch and pray.

4. Hear the victors who o’ercame,
Still they mark each warriors’s way;
All with one sweet voice exclaim,
Watch and pray.

5. Hear, above all, hear thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart His word:
Watch and pray.

6. Watch, as if on that alone
Hung the issue of the day;
Pray, that help may be sent down:
Watch and pray.

Daily Devotional for Teen’s guide was written by Pastor E.A. Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, one of the largest evangelical church in the world and also the President of Christ the Redeemer’s Ministries.

Seeds of Destiny 6 May 2018 by Pastor Paul Enenche: The Power Of The Blessing

Topic: The Power Of The Blessing [Seeds of Destiny Sunday May 6, 2018]

Scripture: And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28

Thought For The Day: The blessing of God is the antidote for poverty and wretchedness.

It has been confirmed that the blessing of God is a non-negotiable necessity in the fulfilment of destiny. That is why God blessed Adam in the very beginning (Genesis 1:28); it was by virtue of the blessing that God asked Adam to multiply and fill up the earth.

Now, what is the power of the blessing of God?
i) The blessing of God imparts the supernatural force for the commencement of new beginning
That was why money or certificate was not what God gave to Adam at the beginning but the blessing.

ii) The blessing of God imparts the supernatural force for the activation of potential and the exhibition of productivity
What a person carries within comes out when the blessing of God comes upon his life; the blessing makes a person unusually productive. The blessed are multi-dimensionally potent; they release multi-dimensional potentials.

iii) The blessing of God imparts the supernatural force that positions people for generational influence and Impact
When a person is blessed, he cannot be an onlooker or a spectator in life but an active participant. The blessing of God makes you a force and a voice to reckon with; it makes you a generational influence; the kind that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had. You cannot pass through this world and people claim ignorance of your existence.

Beloved, endeavour to make demands for the impartation of the blessing of God in your life.

Remember this: The blessing of God is the antidote for poverty and wretchedness.

Assignments:
1. Make demands on God for the impartation of the blessing in your life.

DCLM Daily Manna 6 May, 2018 by Pastor Kumuyi – Our Confidence

Topic: Our Confidence [DCLM Daily Manna Sunday May 6, 2018]

Text: 2 Kings 6:8-23 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16).

MESSAGE:

The prophets of God were useful to the kings and leaders of Israel in various ways. They confronted and exposed idolatry and helped to create a conducive environment for the people to freely and publicly worship the Almighty God. They demonstrated confidence in God when their situations demanded worry and anxiety.
Elisha was one of the outstanding prophets in Bible days. He demonstrated his confidence in God when it appeared there was no hope. The Bible records eighteen encounters between him and needy people. Each time, he expressed his confidence in the power of God.

In our text, the king of Syria was in a fix. Time after time, his military aggression against Israel had ended up in woeful defeat as they tried to fight Israel. The Syrian king then suspected there was a traitor among his soldiers. Informed that the ‘traitor’ was Elisha who was revealing his strategies, he sent soldiers, with chariots and horses to trap and kill the prophet at Dothan.

Elisha’s servant was alarmed when he saw the physical army, chariots and horses of Syria. But Elisha was not moved. He believed in the power of God. God’s answer to Elisha’s prayer opened his servant’s eyes to see the mighty army of heaven. His confidence was re-kindled.

When we face difficulties that look seemingly insurmountable, we should not forget the myriads of spiritual resources and forces God has put at our disposal even though we may not see them with our physical eyes. As believers, we must always walk by faith and not by sight. We should resolve to look away from difficulties, however challenging and, instead, look up unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.

Thought For The Day: There is great reward for our confidence in God.

Billy Graham Devotional 6 May 2018 – Seek God For Yourself

Topic: Seek God For Yourself [Billy Graham’s Devotional Sunday May 6, 2018]

Know ye that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves . . . — Psalm 100:3

Whenever anyone asks me how I can be so certain about who and what God really is, I am reminded of the story of the little boy who was out flying a kite. It was a fine day to go kite-flying, the wind was brisk, and large billowy clouds were blowing across the sky. The kite went up and up until it was entirely hidden by the clouds. “What are you doing?” a man asked the little boy. “I’m flying a kite,” he replied. “Flying a kite, are you?” the man said, “How can you be sure? You can’t see your kite.” “No,” said the little boy, “I can’t see it, but every little while I feel a tug, so I know for sure that it’s there!” Don’t take anyone else’s word for God. Find Him for yourself, and then you too will know by the wonderful, warm tug on your heartstring, that He is there, for sure.

Prayer for the day: Oh heavenly Father, as I reach out to You I feel the “tug” of Your Holy Spirit, which tells me of Your presence!

Doctors Reject Trump’s ‘War Zone’ Comments on London Crime

Some British doctors and legislators reacted angrily Saturday to President Donald Trump’s pro-gun comments at an NRA convention comparing a London hospital to a war zone because of knife crime.

Trump’s provocative comments are expected to increase concerns about his planned first presidential visit to Britain on July 13.

Dr. Martin Griffiths, a surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, tweeted that he would be “happy to invite Mr. Trump” to visit his hospital and meet with London’s mayor and police chief to learn how the city has reduced violent crime.

Dr. Karim Brohi, another Royal London surgeon, said Trump’s position makes no sense.

“There is more we can all do to combat this violence, but to suggest guns are part of the solution is ridiculous,” Brohi tweeted. “Gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more difficult to repair.”

At the NRA convention Friday in Dallas, Trump said Britain has tough gun laws but that one London hospital is awash with blood because of knife wounds.

“They don’t have guns. They have knives and instead there’s blood all over the floors of this hospital,” Trump said. “They say it’s as bad as a military war zone hospital … knives, knives, knives.”

Labour Party lawmaker Sarah Jones tweeted that Trump’s speech was a disgrace.

“U.K. knife crime nowhere near your off-the-scale gun deaths,” she said.

Trump spoke as London is experiencing an increase in knife-related violence.

At the NRA convention, Trump also suggested that a coordinated extremist attack on Paris in 2015 that claimed 130 lives would…
