Sir John Betjeman’s favourite church saved

The group spent decades fighting for Holy Trinity Old Church in St Day – called “an ecclesiastical toy fort” by the English poet – over fears the abandoned church would be sold to developers.

The church had no roof and was partly wrecked but St Day Old Church Community Interest Company has been given control of it by the Church of England.

The grade II-listed church was built in 1826 and was one of twelve in Cornwall funded by the Church Building Commissioners from money made available for church buildings following the Battle of Waterloo.

Chairman of the St Day Old Church Community Interest Company, Bernadette Fallon, told the Daily Telegraph: “When we started this project 30 years ago we hardly dared to dream that we would arrive at this day, but here we stand, on the threshold of a whole new and exciting future for the old church.

“We have had a great deal of support from the people of St Day over the years, and we’re going to need a lot more. There will be something for everyone to do to make the old church project a great success in the future.

“When we’re up and running we hope to put on fantastic events which will attract people from all over the region, as well as visitors to Cornwall.”

The group plans to turn the church into a community space for theatre, music, film, art, and other educational and social…

Is North Korea Opening up to Christianity? After Recent Peace Summit, Believers are Hopeful

Is North Korea Opening up to Christianity? After Recent Peace Summit, Believers are Hopeful

There has been much concern in the past year over North Korea and its threat of launching nuclear weapons. But just last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with South Korean president Moon Jae-in. The meeting of the two leaders signalled a major change in North Korea’s relations with the rest of the world and sparked hope that conditions for North Korean citizens–and particularly Christians–can begin to improve.

Following the meeting, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in issued a joint statement:

“There will be no more war on the Korean peninsula, and a new age of peace has begun.”

Writing for ., J. Lee Grady notes that this turn of events brings to mind Isaiah 2:4 which says:

“He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.”

What is even more remarkable about this change in North Korea’s presence on the world state is that Christians in South Korea have been fasting and praying for this very peace summit. In Paju, a city just south of the North Korean border, pastors held an all-night vigil and South Korean Christian politicians also fasted and prayed.

The South Korean Christians were joined in prayer by their North Korean…

West Virginia Church Ejected by Baptist Denomination Over Pastor’s LGBT Activism

(Photo: Facebook/First Baptist Church of Fairmont, WV)First Baptist Church of Fairmont, West Virginia.

A church in West Virginia was voted out of its state Baptist convention by a local church body due to the pastor’s support for homosexuality.

The Fairmont Baptist Association, a local body of American Baptist Churches, USA, voted to remove First Baptist Church of Fairmont from fellowship over Pastor Valerie Gittings’ views on LGBT issues.

In an interview with The Christian Post on Wednesday, Gittings explained what has changed at FBC Fairmont since they were removed from Convention membership.

“We will no longer be able to work in cooperation with the Fairmont Baptist Association churches on shared worship services, mission projects, and other events. We will not have access to resources the Association and Region provide to member churches,” noted Gittings.

Sutherland Springs pastor heads to White House for National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance in the United States held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. The focus of this year’s observance is unity.

Frank Pomeroy, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, told a news outlet his family, as well as survivors of the massacre, have been invited to the ceremony at the White House.

“We did not expect a personal invitation to the White House from the president,” the pastor’s wife, Sherri, told My SanAntonio.

“When I received that email, I confirmed the legitimacy of the invitation and accepted, of course.”

Police said gunman Devin Kelley walked into the church last November and killed 26 members of the church’s congregation during a Sunday morning service.

Sherri added: “While this invitation is bittersweet because of the events that brought us to this place, may we never turn down a forum to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever it takes us.”

Frank will lead a prayer at the service and attend a private banquet celebrating the National Day of Prayer on Thursday evening.

McCann family to hold prayers for missing Madeleine eleven years after disappearance

Kate and Gerry, who are Catholics, are being joined for the service by a war memorial in their home village of Rothley, Leicestershire by loved ones and supporters.

Madeleine’s great uncle Brian Kennedy, who is attending the service, was quoted by the Daily Star as saying: “We find it hard to believe eleven years have passed but we never lose hope.

“We’ve no idea how many might turn up after such a long time but all are welcome.”

Madeleine was three-years-old when she vanished in Praia de Luz, in the southwestern Algarve region of Portugal on 3rd May 2007.

A police investigation to try and find the youngster has cost more than £11 million.

In a message left on the official Find Madeleine Campaign page on Facebook, Kate and Gerry said: “It gets harder to know what to say or write as each anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction approaches then passes.

“Life is full and busy which helps but Madeleine is still missing and she is still dearly missed.

“Information continues to come in (incredible as it may seem after so long, although we are grateful for that) and work goes on.

“Perseverance and hope remain.”

Tim Keller, John Piper, Andy Stanley Ranked Among Top 12 ‘Most Effective’ Preachers in America

(Photo: Scott Liu/The Christian Post)Pastor Tim Keller of Redeemer, Presbyterian Church preachs at Movement Day 2014 in New York City, Thursday, October 23, 2014.

The top 12 “most effective” English-speaking Christian preachers have been named by Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, among them are popular pastors Timothy Keller, John Piper, and Andy Stanley.

The seminary says that its top 12 list is based on a survey carried out by the Kyle Lake Center for Effective Preaching. First, a survey was sent out in February 2016 to over 500 professors of homiletics for their input on the criteria.

The experts identified seven main areas for effective preaching, listed as follows: biblical/exegetical; relevance; person of the preacher; theological/orthodox; sermon form; effective communication; and delivery.

The 12 preachers named in the resulting compilation were listed in alphabetical order this week, starting with Alistair Begg, senior pastor at Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

Some of Begg’s distinctions include receiving an honorary doctor of divinity by Westminster Theological Seminary for “outstanding dedication to preaching, church leadership, and evangelism.”

Next came Tony Evans, founding pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, who…

Teen arrested for plotting mass shooting at Dallas area mall

A student at Plano West Senior High School is suspected of plotting to commit a mass shooting at Frisco’s Stonebriar Centre mall. Both cities are northern suburbs of Dallas. Like many who live in my area, I have been to Stonebriar many times.

Matin Azizi-Yarand, age seventeen, was taken into custody Tuesday and is being held in lieu of $3 million bail. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

Authorities say his ISIS-inspired attack was planned for Ramadan (which begins this year on May 15) to minimize the danger to Muslims. He was working to purchase weapons and tactical gear and had written a “Message to America” explaining his reasons for the attack.

He intended to kill a police officer at the mall, set stores on fire, and perhaps take hostages as well. His plot was discovered by FBI confidential sources and an undercover employee.

Terrorism is not just a story we read about from Syria or Afghanistan. It is a very real possibility anywhere in the world, including my neighborhood and yours. This is another reason America needs the National Day of Prayer we observe today.

Praying for “the next great move of God in America”

America has observed specific days of prayer since 1688. President Harry Truman made the National Day of Prayer an annual observance in 1952. His reason: “In times of national crisis when we are striving to strengthen the foundations of peace . . . we stand in special need of Divine support.”

This year’s theme is “Pray for America–UNITY.” The theme verse is Ephesians 4:3: “Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Those who organized today’s observance are calling us to “humble ourselves and unify in prevailing prayer for the next great move of God in America.” They believe Christians can “come together in clear agreement that this is our greatest need.”

I agree.

Religion is “the safeguard of morality”

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French diplomat,…

US returns thousands of smuggled biblical artifacts to Iraq

Cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, and clay bullae dating back to 2100-1600 BCE were initially intercepted by customs agents and found to be falsely labeled as tile samples for retailer Hobby Lobby.

The company – whose president, Steve Green is the founder of the Museum of the Bible – agreed last year to surrender the items it received and pay $3 million to settle civil proceedings brought by the US Justice Department.

Court documents revealed the company purchased more than 5,500 artifacts, but has agreed that if it receives any of the remaining items or learns where they are, it will notify the federal government.

However, the privately held Hobby Lobby has insisted the seized artifacts were not intended for the museum.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Handout

In a statement, the company said it had been acquiring artifacts “consistent with the company’s mission and passion for the Bible”.

US Attorney Richard Donoghue said US officials “are proud to have played a role in removing these pieces of Iraq’s history from the black market of illegally obtained antiquities and restoring them to the Iraqi people”.
