9 Dead, 16 Injured in Van Ramming on Toronto Street; Driver in Custody

A rented van jumped onto a crowded Toronto sidewalk Monday, killing nine people and injuring 16 before the driver fled and was quickly arrested in a confrontation with police, Canadian authorities said.

Witnesses said the driver was moving fast and appeared to be acting deliberately, but police said they did not yet know the cause or any possible motive. The name of the suspect was not released.

Toronto Police Services Deputy Chief Peter Yuen released no details about the investigation as he announced the number of casualties.

Yuen said police were still interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance video of the incident as part of what he called a “complex” investigation.

“I can assure the public all our available resources have been brought in to investigate this tragic situation,” he said.

The incident occurred as Cabinet ministers from the major industrial countries were gathered in Canada to discuss a range of international issues in the run-up to the G7 meeting near Quebec City in June.

Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale said that it was too soon to say whether the crash was a case of international terrorism and that the government had not raised its terrorism alert.

A senior national government official later said that authorities had not turned over the investigation to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a sign that investigators believed it unlikely terrorism was the motive. The official agreed to reveal that information only if not quoted by name.

The driver was heading south on busy Yonge Street around 1:30 p.m. and the streets were crowded with people…

Turkish President Erdogan Responds to Calls for Release of US Pastor Andrew Brunson

Turkish President Recep Erdogan has responded to the ongoing calls by Christian groups and U.S. President Donald Trump that he release imprisoned U.S. Pastor Andrew Brunson.

Referring to demands he has made in the past, Erdogan said Saturday that Brunson’s fate is directly tied with the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric living in Pennsylvania who is accused by the Turkish government of staging a failed military coup in the country in 2016.

“The U.S. is behind [Gulen],” Erdogan told Turkish television news channel NTV, according to Sputnik News on Sunday.

He added that “if you want Brunson, look at the steps you have taken in the past. Why don’t you deport this man in accordance with the extradition treaty?”

The United States has so far refused to extradite Gulen, but has insisted that Turkey hand over Brunson, who is facing up to 35 years in prison if convicted of espionage and terrorism charges.

“Pastor Andrew Brunson, a fine gentleman and Christian leader in the United States, is on trial and being persecuted in Turkey for no reason,” Trump tweeted last week.

“They call him a Spy, but I am more a Spy than he is. Hopefully he will be allowed to come home to his beautiful family where he belongs!”

Brunson, who served at a small Protestant church in Izmir for 23 years before he was arrested in October 2016, has firmly denied he was involved in any illegal activities, insisting his only goal was ministering to people.

Open Heavens 24th April 2018 Tuesday — Power In The Word

Topic: Power In The Word [Open Heavens 24 April 2018, Tuesday]

Memorise: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1

Read: Hebrews 4:1-12 (KJV)

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Bible in One Year: Judges 19, Hebrews 1:1-2:4

MESSAGE:

John 1:1 describes the Word of God as God Himself. This implies that since God is the Almighty, the word of God is also Almighty. It is therefore dangerous to trivialize the Word of God. No wonder Psalm 138:2 says,

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

In light of this Scripture, and considering the immense power embedded in the Name of Jesus, can you then imagine how powerful the word of God truly is? The power in the word of God was demonstrated at the creation of the world. To therefore understand the power in God’s word just take a look at the universe around you. The Almighty God spoke the word and the word produced the entire universe. Psalm 148:3-5 says,

“3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. 4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.”

You may want to ask: what can the word do for me? Well, for one thing, the word can heal you. In Matthew 8:5-13, there is the story of a centurion who begged Jesus Christ to heal his servant, and Jesus agreed to go with him to his house to heal his servant. However, the centurion demonstrated his understanding of the power in the spoken word, particularly that of the Almighty God. In Matthew 8:8 He profoundly said,

“…Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”

In response to this demonstration of faith in the power of God’s word, Jesus Christ released the word and the required healing occurred. Matthew 8:13 says,

“And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.”

From this example, it is obvious that space and time are not a limitation to the power in God’s word. It does not matter where you are or how far gone the situation is; the word God can touch you right where you are. All you need to do is believe (Mark 9:23). I therefore release the word of God to you today: “Be healed of every infirmity that ails you now because the stripes of Jesus have set you free from that infirmity.” Beloved, believe in the power of God’s word today, and it will make you triumph over every situation of life. It is well with you.

Action Point: Speak the appropriate word of God to that challenge facing you today.

HYMN 13: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
3. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All praise we would render; oh, help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee.

5. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

Mother Who Chose Not to Abort Baby Now Fighting for Pro-life Free Speech Rights

Mother Who Chose Not to Abort Baby Now Fighting for Pro-life Free Speech Rights

A mother in London who chose to keep her unborn baby because of sidewalk counselors says she is filing a lawsuit against a new law that would push pro-life advocates further from abortion facilities.

Alina Dulgheriu, who is now a pro-life counselor with Be Here For Me, is filing the lawsuit after a council in London approved a 100-meter buffer zone that will prohibit pro-life supporters from gathering around a Marie Stopes abortion facility in London.

Dulgheriu says the buffer zone “criminalizes prayer” and would prevent counselors from giving information to women considering abortions.

“My little girl is here today because of the real practical and emotional support that I was given by a group outside a Marie Stopes clinic,” she said. “I am launching my legal challenge at the High Court to ensure that all women at Ealing and across the country do not have a vital support option removed.”

The Ealing Council in west London voted unanimously to approve the “safe zone” around the clinic after some women complained of intimidation by the protestors and counselors. However, pro-life supporters have denied harassing women.

The law says any who violate the buffer zone could face fines or jail time.

“What sort of a society criminalizes charity that is wanted and welcomed by many? Britain has a reputation for being a liberal, caring society,…

Willow Creek Elders Admit Failure in Holding Bill Hybels ‘Accountable,’ Will Examine New Allegations

(Screenshot: Willowcreek.tv)Bill Hybels, founder of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois, speaks to the congregation in October 2017.

The elder board of the storied Willow Creek Community Church in suburban Chicago asked for grace this past weekend as they admitted to failing to hold the church’s founder, Bill Hybels, “accountable to specific boundaries” as more women alleged he behaved improperly around them.

Responding to newer allegations that were not previously investigated, the elder board revealed that they have engaged in deep introspection and now realized how they could have responded better as the claims were first made against Hybels.

“Over the last several weeks, we have been in a process of deep learning, seeking clarity, and building a path toward reconciliation. Even though Bill is no longer in his role, our work to resolve any shadow of doubt in the trustworthiness of Willow Creek Community Church and its Elders is not done,” the elders said in a letter to the Willow Creek church community Saturday. “As a board, we unanimously agree there are several areas where we could have served you better.”

And holding Hybels more accountable was one of those areas.

“Bill acknowledged that he placed himself in situations that would have been…

Christian Woman in Pakistan Dies after Being Set on Fire

Christian Woman in Pakistan Dies after Being Set on Fire

A Christian woman in Pakistan died on Sunday night (April 22) after a Muslim in the Sialkot area set her on fire for refusing to convert to Islam and marry him, relatives said.

Muhammad Rizwan Gujjar poured kerosene on 25-year-old Asma Yaqoob and set her on fire on Wednesday (April 17), resulting in burns on 80 percent of her body, sources said.

She and her father, Yaqoob Masih, and her brother Maqsood were at the house where she worked as a domestic worker for Saeeduz Zaman in the Mohalla Pakpura area when the attack took place, according to a police report.

Masih, a resident of Mohalla Bogara near Hajipura, stated in the police First Information Report (FIR 171/18) that he and his son had gone to Zaman’s house at 11 p.m. to meet Asma and inquire after the health of Zaman’s ailing mother.

“We were sitting in a room when there was a knock on the front gate,” he said. “Asma went out to see who had come, when after some time we heard her screaming in pain. Zaman, Maqsood and I rushed outside to see what had happened and saw the accused Rizwan Gujjar fleeing from the scene while Asma was engulfed in flames.”

At Sialkot Civil Hospital, Asma Yaqoob told them that Gujjar had been pressuring her to marry him for some time, but that she had turned him down because she did not want to recant her Christian faith, Masih stated in the FIR.

Asma…

Billy Graham’s Grandson Vows to Continue Ministry, Preach ‘as If Christ Is Coming Back in Our Lifetime’

(Photo: Billy Graham Evangelistic Association)Evangelist Will Graham speaks in Norway during a recent week-long tour of the European country.

Following the death of his grandfather Billy Graham, Will Graham hopes to carry on the famed evangelist’s ministry by sharing the Gospel with millions “as if Christ is coming back in our lifetime.”

Will Graham, the oldest son of Franklin Graham who also serves as vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said that while the cultural landscape may not be the same as in his grandfather’s day, the message of the Gospel is always relevant.

“You talk about changing landscapes,” Will said, adding that his grandfather, who passed away on Feb. 21 at the age of 99, “just preached God’s Word. That’s the best way to do it—just open God’s Word and preach to people.”

“When you get up there and preach God’s Word, God’s Word does the rest,” he said, adding that people are “still looking for the same things in life.”

“The Gospel transcends culture, transcends language, transcends politics,” he said.

The younger Graham, who has held evangelistic outreaches on six continents around the world, said that while he’s not trying to be the next Billy Graham, he tries to emulate “the sense of urgency and the sense of boldness” his…

Willow Creek to Conduct thorough Investigation into Former Pastor Bill Hybels’ Misconduct

Willow Creek to Conduct thorough Investigation into Former Pastor Bill Hybels’ Misconduct

Pastor Bill Hybels resigned as senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church earlier this month following sexual misconduct allegations. Now, the church has announced it will be conducting a more in-depth investigation into Hybels’ conduct and into their own leadership practices and policies in order to restore trust and accountability within the church.

Although Willow Creek’s leadership initially said they could not confirm the misconduct allegations leveled against Hybels, they have now backtracked and issued this statement:

“Even though Bill is no longer in his role, our work to resolve any shadow of doubt in the trustworthiness of [Willow] is not done. With the benefit of hindsight, we see several aspects of our past work that we would have handled differently, and we have identified several areas of learning.

“We have at times communicated without a posture of deep listening and understanding,” the church elders continued in their letter. “We are sorry that at times our process appeared to diminish the deep compassion we have for all those involved in these matters.”

In the letter, Willow Creek’s elders also promised to “methodically examine our church culture, enhancing policies and informal practices that support healthy and valuable working relationships between men and women.”

But the church’s efforts not only…

New Film ‘The Heart Of Nuba’ Tells Story of Christian Doctor Who Risked Life to Serve in War-Torn Sudan

A newly released film titled, “The Heart Of Nuba” tells the story of Catholic Relief Services doctor Tom Catena who serves as a missionary to the children and adults of the war-torn Nuba Mountains of Sudan as they endure the bombing attacks in the region.

Catena is the only surgeon within 200 miles of that region. The gripping documentary shows how he single-handedly cares for the one million Nuba people with a small set of helpers who he is training up, while also running the Mother of Mercy Hospital in southern Sudan’s remote Nuba Mountains.

The oil-rich region has been terrorized since 2011 by aerial bombings sent by the nation’s president, indicted war criminal Omar al-Bashir. The bombings have resulted in multiple deaths, destruction and displacement. The film claims the president’s goal is to extinguish the Nuba people who he considers rebels because of the complexion of their skin.

Unfortunately, there is also a lack of humanitarian aid for the besieged people. However, Catena is determined to make due with what he has in an effort to save lives. From start to finish, two things remain constant — the doctor’s faith (which is seen as he prays and reads the Bible) and his love for the Nuba people.

Matt Chandler Says Pastors Who Address Racism Outside of Biblical Framework ‘Sabotage’ Chance of Change

(Photo: Exponential.org)President of Acts 29 Matt Chandler speaks during Exponential East Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church in Highland Village, Texas, said that pastors who fail to address the issue of racial injustice within the framework of the Gospel ultimately “sabotage” any chance for true change.

“What we see happening historically is when the Church starts to focus on social issues outside of the atoning work of Jesus Christ, then what happens is, the Church will start to cut away what they see as the hindrances of people getting on board with the social movement,” Chandler told Relevant Magazine in a recent interview.

“So if the atoning work of Jesus Christ is an offense to accomplish racial harmony, then let’s get rid of the atoning work of Jesus Christ and simply make Jesus’s platform one of social embetterment, and that has happened on repeat,” he continued. “Monsters have come through this door before and ultimately sabotaged the hope of those that got involved in these movements. I think that by keeping the social aspects tied to the Gospel and to the atoning work of Jesus Christ, we’ve gotten the best bet at actually seeing movement in these movements.”

The pastor, who previously revealed he’s labeled a “liberal” or…
