Focus on the Family Defends IRS Classification as a ‘Church,’ Says It’s Meant to Protect Donors

Focus on the Family is defending its decision to have the Internal Revenue Service officially reclassify the Christian nonprofit as a “church,” denouncing the efforts of some to ascribe “sinister” intentions to the change.

An article published in February by the liberal group People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch site documenting Focus on the Family’s reclassification has been getting extensive attention in recent weeks.

The piece noted that the Colorado-based conservative Christian organization has long identified as a non-church 501(c)(3) nonprofit. By 2015 fiscal year, it had been relabeled a “church.”

Paul Batura, vice president of communications for Focus on the Family, told The Christian Post that the news stories on their reclassification as a church give “sinister and fictitious motives to our application.”

Batura explained that the main reason for the reclassification was to protect the identities of donors to the conservative Christian organization.

“In recent years there have been several occasions on which nonprofit organizations were targeted for information, including the names and personal details of their donors. In order to protect our constituents’…

Archbishop in Pakistan appeals for prayers after another attack on Christians

Two Christians, Rashid Khalid and Azhar Iqbal, and three others were injured after four attackers on motorbikes started shooting at people near a church in Quetta’s Essa Nagri Christian neighbourhood.

The attack, last Sunday came nearly two weeks after a family of four Catholics from Lahore were gunned down outside a relative’s house during an Easter visit to the city.

The men, Parvaiz, Kamran, Tariq and Fordous, had reportedly just stepped outside to buy ice cream when they were targeted.

According to a missionary group in Pakistan, the attackers left a pamphlet at the scene of the crime describing the killing as “the first episode of genocide against Christians”.

Daesh (ISIS) claimed responsibility for both attacks.

In an interview with Aid to the Church in Need, the Catholic charity for persecuted and other suffering Christians, Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore said “The faithful in Quetta are deeply concerned and worried.

“All these sufferings and pain can be overcome by faith so through ACN I call on everyone to pray for peace and harmony so that people of all religions may live in Pakistan in peace and harmony.”

The Archbishop said: “When we see these atrocities happening one after another, we very much depend on the spiritual communion that we have with friends and benefactors of Aid to the Church in Need.”

He added: “When we are tempted…

Survivor of Rape, Incest Shares How Church Can Come Alongside Those Sexually Abused

(Photo: Reuters/Lucy Nicholson)People participate in a protest march for survivors of sexual assault and their supporters in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, U.S. November 12, 2017.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness month, as well as National Child Abuse Prevention month — and Shannon Deitz, abuse survivor and founder of Hopeful Hearts Ministry, is using the opportunity to raise awareness and offer a voice for survivors.

“This is a huge problem that we’re living every day,” Dietz told The Christian Post. “This is not a ‘fix it and it’s done’ problem. It’s something that affects our everyday life, our interactions with others, and how we view God. When we get abused, we get covered by these lies that we’re not good enough and that the shame is ours to carry. It’s about releasing those lies and saying, ‘I am worthy, I am God’s child, I have a right to be treated as a holy, good and perfect creation.”

The Church, she said, should be the first place bringing hope, healing, and a sense of God’s heart to those who are broken.

“We need to say, ‘I understand what you’ve been through, and that in no way defines who you are or how God sees you, His heart is broken for you,'” she said. “We need to say, ‘How can I help you heal? How can I come alongside you? I am so sorry and I’m here for you, whatever you need.’ With God’s help, we need to help survivors overcome the stigma of shame attached to abuse.”

Sexual violence, including child sexual abuse, indiscriminately affects all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Studies by David Finkelhor, Director of the Crimes…

Student is Injured in School Shooting on Day of Student Walkout against Gun Violence

Student is Injured in School Shooting on Day of Student Walkout against Gun Violence

One student has been injured in a high school shooting in Ocala, Florida. CNN reports that this is the 20th school shooting this year.

This shooting took place just as students around the country were set to participate in a school walkout to protest gun violence.

The student was reportedly shot in the ankle and has been taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, said a spokesman for Marion Public schools in Ocala.

Police have taken the suspect into custody and have asked residents to avoid the area while they secure the premises and ensure the students are safe.

Students at the high school were taken to nearby First Baptist Church of Ocala where their parents were told to pick them up.

Meanwhile, students at about 2,500 schools around the nation are participating in a school walkout to protest the very thing that happened this morning.

“The fact that it happened on this day, in a way, reinforces what we are trying to get across,” said Ryan Servaites, one of the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and teachers were killed in February of this year.

“We won’t stop,” Servaites added. “This is why. It is, in a way, the world slapping us in the face, but we just have to look at it as a wake-up call.”

Greg Laurie Offers Biblical Tips for Healthy, Successful Marriage in Divorce-Riddled Culture

(SCREENSHOT: WWW.HARVEST.ORG)Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries in California preaches on February 11, 2018.

Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in California offered tips for a healthy, biblical marriage in a recent message titled “Marriage 101,” the third session in his “#RelationshipGoals” series.

The pastor, who has been married to his wife Cathe for 44 years, began by stating that while there are “biblical allowances” for divorce, most divorces today “could’ve been avoided.” In fact, he argued that the reason most marriages fall apart boils down to two issues: selfishness and communication breakdown.

“I go into a marriage saying, ‘That person has to fulfill me, that person has to meet my needs, in fact, I’m going to fix that person,'” he said. “Never marry someone you think you’re gonna fix, because they’re probably going to get worse … Marriage isn’t so much about finding the right person as it is being the right person.”

Hollywood and the culture today have “little to nothing to say” when it comes to healthy marriages, Laurie said, referencing the high divorce rate among celebrities. In fact, many movies and TV shows “make a joke out of something sacred,” he added, urging listeners to “strike out altogether” the idea of living together before…

Catholic bishops say they’re committed to pastoral care of transgender people

The clergy discussed the issue of gender at their conference in Leeds this week.

Bishop John Sherrington, the auxiliary bishop of Westminster said: “We recognise that there are people who do not accept their biological sex. We are concerned about and committed to their pastoral care.”

He added: “We wish to extend compassion and accompany them in the way that they live out their faith.”

Wanting to highlight how the Catholic Church desires to be understanding towards those struggling with gender, he said: “There is a place of welcome for everyone in the Catholic Church.”

However, Bishop John added that Catholic teaching maintains that “God creates human beings male and female”, quoting Genesis 1:27.

He explained their position theologically remains the same: “Therefore we emphasise these foundational differences and the way in which they do shape our understanding – that’s in contrast to those that argue that the individual is free to define himself or herself today.”

In a joint statement, the bishops said: “We are deeply concerned that this ideology of gender is creating confusion.”

“We hope for a renewed appreciation of the fundamental importance of sexual difference in our culture and the accompaniment of those who experience conflict in their sense of self and God-given identity.”

4 Tips on How to Be Productive, Straight From Elon Musk

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is trying to get a lot done — alternating his time between developing reusable spaceflight modules one day and building a mass-market electric car the next. In a memo to Tesla employees about a bold plan to push Model 3 cars 24/7, the CEO laid out a few personal tips.

Wikimedia Commons/Heisenberg MediaCEO Elon Musk is known for being extremely productive, aside from starting up spaceflight and electric car companies.

The 46-year old visionary is making the most out of his time, and to do just that, he advised employees to do away with the things that get in the way of productivity — even if they are things other companies embrace as vital, like meetings or a rigid office structure.

Excessive Meetings Waste People’s Time

Musk is just not a fan of meetings, and the bigger they are, the more he asks his employees to avoid them altogether. “Excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time,” he emphasized, as quoted by Business Insider.

SpaceXThe SpaceX Falcon Heavy has the ability to lift into orbit over 54 metric tons (119,000 lb), a mass equivalent to a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel.

He asked his employees to get rid of all meetings, period, aside from a few cases. Large meetings are to be an exception and not the rule, and those should only be held if the host is certain that what they will present will be valuable to the entire audience.

“In which case keep them very short,” Musk allowed. Wasting less time on meetings means getting a lot more done, which is vital in doing things like, say,

On 19th Anniversary of Shooting, Columbine High School Principal Recalls How God Worked a Miracle

On 19th Anniversary of Shooting, Columbine High School Principal Recalls How God Worked a Miracle

Today marks the 19th anniversary of the horrific shooting at Columbine High School in which 15 people, including the perpetrators, lost their lives. The former principal of Columbine High School recently shared how God looked out for him and students he was trying to protect on that fateful day.

Frank DeAngelis refers to the 13 students and one teacher who died on April 20, 1999 as “the beloved 13.” DeAngelis was also close friends with the teacher, Dave Sanders.

While mourning the loss of these individuals, DeAngelis shared that the death count could easily have been higher.

The Christian Post reports that DeAngelis was in his office when he heard the gunshots. He ran out into the hallway to protect students and saw the shooter about 75 yards away. His plan was to get the students safely into the school’s gym and lock the doors.

Unfortunately, the doors to the gym were locked.

DeAngelis shares what happened next:

“I got them into a hallway and I wanted to get into the gymnasium so we could be behind locked doors. But the doors were locked. And something happened that still gives me chills when I say it. Girls were screaming, the gunman was firing shots and he was getting closer. I go to open the door and it’s locked. I had 35 keys on a key ring and I reached in my pocket and I pulled out a key and it was a key that opened the…

Bishop leads funeral after Leicester explosion

Mary Ragoobeer, 46, and her sons, Shane, 18, and Sean, 17, were pronounced dead after the blast destroyed a Polish supermarket in Hinckley Road, Leicester, and the flat above it, in February.

More than 600 people attended the family’s funeral led by the Bishop of Leicester.

A cortege of 12 vehicles, including three hearses – one holding the coffins and a car carrying Mrs Ragoobeer’s widower, Jose Ragoobeer – drove past the site of the explosion.

The procession then passed the English Martyrs’ School, where Shane and Sean were pupils, before arriving at Gilroes Cemetery for a private service.

Family, friends and members of the public filled Leicester Cathedral on Friday, with many wearing football shirts in memory of Shane and Sean’s love of Manchester United and Liverpool.

The blast, in which Leah Beth Reek, 18, and Viktorija Ljevleva, 22, also died, destroyed a Polish supermarket and the two-storey flat above.

During the 90-minute funeral service, the Bishop of Leicester, the Right Reverend Martyn Snow, said: “Today is not a day to speculate about causes or express our anger.”

Tributes were paid to the three victims by tearful family members, and songs were played by a band from a church where Mr Ragoobeer is an active member.

During the service, Mrs Ragoobeer’s niece, Shannon Ragoobeer, who referred to her as “Auntie…
