New Zealand tops Commonwealth religious freedoms list

The island nation topped a list of 53 states – narrowly beating Lesotho and Botswana – published by the Council for Christians and Jews (CCJ).

The study analysed statistics collected by the Pew-Templeton Global Religious Futures Project which considered factors such as how free people are to preach publicly or convert.

The risk of religious hostility faced by organisations and private individuals from sources such as terrorism and armed conflict was also considered.

The Commonwealth countries where religious freedoms were found to be most under threat were Malaysia, India and Nigeria.

The UK was ranked middle in the list.

CCJ trustee Zaki Cooper said he hopes the study will encourage Commonwealth leaders meeting in London this week to hold one another to task over shortcomings in religious freedoms.

He told Premier: “The Commonwealth doesn’t have military power, it doesn’t have economic power but it has soft power; the power of persuasion.

“If some of the Commonwealth members can persuade these countries to make progress where they are lacking in religious freedom, I think that would be a very good thing indeed.”

Are Megachurches Biblical? Evangelical Professor Explains What Is ‘Non-Negotiable’

(Photo: Courtesy Lakewood Church)Attendees of the 2016 Mobilizing Medical Conference held at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas listen to a musical performance.

A Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor recently tackled the long-debated question of whether megachurches are biblical, pointing out that there are some key non-negotiable principles that every church needs to follow.

“The real question is one of obedience. Does this church look like the church of the New Testament? Are we carrying out what Christ has given us to do? That is non-negotiable, but size is never made a part of the command,” said Hershael York, Victor and Louise Lester professor of Christian Preaching at Southern Seminary.

“We’re not told to get to a certain size and split, nor are we told that a small church is ineffective. We’re told to be faithful, specifically to the Great Commission.”

York insisted that Scripture never makes size a qualification for a good church, and pointed to the history of the first church in Jerusalem, when Jesus talks to the Apostles about church discipline in Matthew 18.

“On the day of Pentecost we know that they are numbered 120 that gather together in the upper room. And then by the end of the day they’ve grown considerably,” he said, noting that “3,000 were…

What Time’s 100 “most influential people” says to the American church

Time‘s annual list of the world’s one hundred most influential people has been published.

Forty-five women are on the list, more than ever before. As the magazine notes, one of them is New Zealand’s new prime minister, the youngest female head of government on the planet. A wide variety of ethnicities and nationalities are represented as well.

It is encouraging to see this cultural icon honor our national commitment to “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” for all people. The news reminds us each day that while we have come a long way, we have a long way to go.

Starbucks, the Olympics, and two universities

Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America yesterday. After they were arrested for trespassing last week at a Philadelphia Starbucks, their story made national news. On Monday, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson apologized to the men. The store employee who called 911 is no longer with the company.

Starbucks plans to close its 8,000 company-owned stores in the US for an afternoon in May to teach workers about racial bias. The training will be provided to about 175,000 employees.

In another story making headlines, Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney has told Dateline that the USA Gymnastics team doctor used food to manipulate her. She said she was molested by him hundreds of times.

Earlier this week, Syracuse University suspended an engineering fraternity. According to the university’s chancellor, footage surfaced of members speaking and acting in ways “that are extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist and hostile to people with disabilities.”

Last week, a fraternity at California Polytechnic State University was sanctioned by its national organization after students dressed as gang members, including one in blackface. The university’s dean of students stated that “racism and hate are unwelcome here, in any form.”

Where we agree with our culture

As I noted this past Tuesday, our…

Christian Southwest Airlines pilot lauded for handling crisis

Tammie Jo Shults, a Christian and one of the first female fighter pilots in the US Navy, was the captain and piloting the Dallas-bound Flight 1380 when it made an emergency landing on Tuesday in Philadelphia, according to her husband, Dean Shults.

One of the engines on the Boeing 737 exploded while the plane was travelling 500 mph at 30,000ft with 149 people on board.

Shrapnel hit the plane and passengers said they had to rescue a woman who was being blown out of a damaged window. The woman later died of blunt force trauma to her head, neck and torso.

Captain Shults calmly relayed details about the crisis to air traffic controllers, and passengers commended her handling of the situation.

In a statement late Wednesday, Mrs Shults and First Officer Darren Ellisor said they felt like they were simply doing their jobs.

“On behalf of the entire Crew, we appreciate the outpouring of support from the public and our coworkers as we all reflect on one family’s profound loss,” the two pilots said in the statement, adding that their “hearts are heavy”.

Friends at Mrs Shults’ church in Boerne, Texas, about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, said they were not surprised after listening to the recording and reading media reports about her actions.

“Everybody is talking about Tammie Jo and how cool and calm she was in a crisis, and that’s just Tammie Jo,” Rachel Russo said….

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional Friday, 20 April 2018 – Be Passionate About Spiritual Things

TOPIC: Be Passionate About Spiritual Things (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Friday, 20 April 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:5-8, 14

MEMORY VERSE:

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16

The MESSAGE:

Spiritual things are to the believer what food is to the body. As the body cannot grow and operate well without food, so also a Christian cannot grow or function well without spiritual things. King David said as the deer longs for water so does he long for God. The deer longs for water for survival. When it is being chased by a predator, it searches frantically for the nearest body of water and when it finds one, it lunges into it, hiding its scent from the predator. This is how desperately you must long for spiritual things. It must be as if your life depends on it. The truth is, it does.

The life we’ve been called to as Christians is spiritual; hence you must be passionate about spiritual things. The importance of spiritual things cannot be overemphasized. Spiritual hunger and longing aren’t automatic. They have to be cultivated. There are certain important things you must do to cultivate this hunger. You have to deliberately, consistently study the Word to know it. The word of God is like spiritual food. When you eat natural food, you get hungry again. It is the sign of living. The more of God’s word you take in, the hungrier for spiritual things you become. The Word makes you recognise the voice of God. You have to train your spirit to respond to God by acting on the word promptly without delay (Joshua 18:3; Romans 12:11). Besides praying fervently and studying the Bible regularly, make attending church services, meetings and programmes in your local assembly a top priority (Hebrews 10:25). Iron sharpens iron. Fellowship with people who desire spiritual things.

Stressing the importance of being passionate about spiritual things, Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.” The proof of desire is pursuit; you can’t really desire something and not go for it. If you are truly hungry and passionate for spiritual things, your hunger will be satisfied. So have a burning zeal to grow in the things of God. Pursue your desire for God with your resources such as time, talent, treasures and energy.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

PROPHETIC WORD:
God will satisfy your hunger for spiritual things.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Dear Father, thank You for Your word is a light unto me, in the name of Jesus.
2. Thank You, Father, for Your word that enriches me daily, in the name of Jesus.
3. I dominate the circumstances of my life today and declare that all things are working together for my good, in the mighty name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Thank You, Lord, for upholding me all these years, in the name of Jesus.
5. I overcome any distraction to my spiritual growth, in the name of Jesus.
6. Lord, give me deeper understanding of Your word, in the name of Jesus.
7. I stand upon the word of God and remain unshakable by any satanic scheme, in the name of Jesus.

Reporter in Sir Cliff trial shrugs off ‘hand of God’ joke

Dan Johnson has been giving evidence at the High Court where Sir Cliff is seeking damages from the BBC for how it reported the police investigation into alleged abuse.

The singer denied the allegations and was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Mr Johnson was asked what he meant in an internal BBC email when he made remarks about a clip of Evangelist preacher Billy Graham rally at Bramall Lane in the 1980s, where the alleged sex assault was said to have happened.

Justin Rushbrooke QC, for Sir Cliff, said the phrases “it wasn’t just the hand of God doing the touching” and “guilty in my book” were an indication of the reporter’s “mindset” about the story.

The barrister said Mr Johnson was treating the singer “as a guilty man”.

But Mr Johnson repeatedly denied he was referring to Sir Cliff in the email, and said the comments were about Mr Graham.

He described the “hand of God” reference as a “bad taste joke”, adding: “These are light-hearted remarks made to a close colleague, it doesn’t mean anything.

“It doesn’t affect the way I reported this story later on.”

Sir Cliff sat open-mouthed and shook his head in disbelief as Mr Johnson gave his responses to the court.

US politicians demand sanctions against Turkey over detained pastor Andrew Brunson

James Lankford, a Republican, and Democrat Jeanna Shaheen said the measure should be included in next year’s budget unless Andrew Brunson is freed.

In a joint statement, they said: “Turkish officials who participate in the detainment of any innocent American citizen should face international consequences, and the actions against Pastor Brunson, in particular, qualify as hostage-taking.”

Lankford and Shaheen sit on a sub-committee within the House Committee on Appropriations – a body responsible for laws allocating federal funds prior to expenditure from the US Treasury.

They went on to say: “We desire cooperation and strengthening ties between our countries, but the US Government has a responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of its people.”

Numerous senior political figures have spoken out in defence of Mr Brunson in recent weeks and months, including US President Donald Trump.

PA

Donald Trump tweeted earlier this week: “Pastor Andrew Brunson, a fine gentleman and Christian leader in the United States, is on trial and being persecuted in Turkey for no reason.

“They call him a spy, but I am more a spy than he is.

“Hopefully he will be allowed to come home to his beautiful family where he belongs!”

The 50-year-old is on trial in the Mediterranean city of Izmir, accused of links to two organisations which Ankara blames…

Michelle Williams engaged to pastor

The couple first met when Williams, 37, attended an Elevate International retreat 40-year-old Johnson was hosting in Arizona last March.

Johnson, who works with sports teams including the Pittsburgh Steelers, told People magazine, “When we met, both of us were in very similar places on a personal level.

“Michelle was coming off the heels of a really bad relationship, and I was just in a place of despair as well.”

The couple say they are planning a short engagement and intend to marry this summer after Johnson proposed to Williams in Pebble Beach, California last month.

Williams, who embarked on a solo music career following a stint in the girl group Destiny’s Child, said she introduce Chad to her former bandmates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland last summer.

Encouraging single people not to worry about being alone, she said: “Don’t lose hope in love.

“I do think you should not focus so much that if you’re not in love that you get depressed about it.

The ‘Say Yes’ singer added: “Just don’t lose hope.

“But definitely be doing what you can do to make yourself a better person for the person that possibly is on the way for you.”

Small Church Essentials with Karl Vaters

Podcast Episode #425

SUBSCRIBE: iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

Karl Vaters joins us once again to talk about how small churches should focus on growing healthier—not necessarily larger.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • With churches, bigger is not always equal to healthier, and we need to focus more on health than size.
  • Church health should be measured in three big buckets: fulfilling the Great Commandment, fulfilling the Great Commandment, and equipping the saints to do the work of ministry.
  • Church health is not the means to an end. It is the goal itself.
  • Pastors of small churches are just as valuable in the Kingdom of God as those who pastor large churches.

About Karl Vaters:

Karl’s heart is to help pastors of small churches (up to 90% of churches) find the resources to pastor their current church well, and to capitalize on the unique advantages that come with pastoring a small church – something virtually every pastor will spend at least some of their ministry years doing. He also believes that big and small churches can and should work together more often – to the benefit of each. Karl has been in pastoral ministry for over 30 years. He is the teaching pastor of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, a healthy small church in Orange County, California, where he has ministered for over 25 years.

About Small Church Essentials:

Big churches get all the love. Articles, books, conferences—they mostly feature leaders of large…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 20 April 2018 Devotional — Attitude Is Everything

Topic: Attitude Is Everything [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Friday April 20, 2018]

Through Him, therefore, let us at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name. — Hebrews 13:15

Some of the challenges we face in life may be very difficult ones, but God never allows more to come upon us than we can bear. In fact, with every temptation, He always provides a way out.

The Scripture above not only says He provides a way out, but it also says He gives us the strength to bear up under trials with patience. That means we can go through them with a good attitude! Maintaining a good attitude in the midst of something unpleasant is the key to victory, and it enables us to enjoy the journey.

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for the strength to deal with my current circumstances. Help me today to see my life with a new perspective. Help me to choose a positive attitude and see things with the “eye of faith.” In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
