1,085 unmarried people between the ages of 18-35 were sampled with only 7% saying they ‘had no intention of ever being married’.

The remainder were asked what would influence their wedding plans.

The Church of England conducted the research and Rev Dr Sandra Millar, The Church of England’s Head of Life Events told Premier:  “People under 35 are still interested in marriage and weddings and also we were interested that people really start thinking about this very early on in their lives.”

Among those who were single, almost six in 10 (59%) said that they would like to marry at some point.

The survey also suggests that millennials attach a special importance to church weddings, with more young people preferring to marry in a church or chapel (47%) than a register office/town hall (34%).

On this, Rev Sandra said: “In England we have a lot of people who are loosely connected [to the church] although not actively Christian and some of those people are the people who might be more encouraged early on that they can get married in church if they ask.”

Those who would consider a church wedding were asked why it appealed to them from a list of options. Almost a third said that it felt like a ‘proper’ wedding (31%). Marrying before God or receiving a blessing, was the seventh most chosen option.

Meanwhile, Russia have again sided with Assad and the Russian Ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, has said: “The Syrian government had been repeatedly warning for at least a month that rebels prepared to stage a provocation with chemical weapons in this very area.” The embassy say there is no evidence for a chemical attack: “Russian services for chemical and radiological security visited the suspected site of the incident and did not find any traces of chemical substances. No persons treated for chemical poisoning were found in local hospitals.” and are therefore warning the West against any action.

The National Churches Trust is distributing the funds to places of worship in need of urgent repairs.

One church set to be helped is St Michael and All Angels in Brampton Abbotts, Herefordshire.

The church has been closed since 2012 but will be made wind proof and watertight thanks to a £20,000 grant.

The new vicar is planning to re-open the church, offering worship on a monthly basis and a community space including a pop-up community bakery.
