Unveiling the review, education secretary Damian Hinds (pictured below) said on Friday that some youngsters – especially those from challenging backgrounds – face “inconsistencies” in their experience of education.

It is understood ministers want to examine how exclusions are used and whether some pupils are more likely to be excluded than others.

Transforming Lives for Good (TLG), a Christian charity which trains church members to offer regular one-hour mentoring sessions to youngsters in difficult circumstances, told Premier that “injustice” plagues the education system.

Chief executive, Tim Morfin said: “The reality that kids who are growing up in poverty are four times more likely to be excluded from school just tells us that there is a real risk of a system that isn’t fair.”

TLG asserts that children affected by bereavement, family breakdown or poverty need additional support some schools are unable to provide due to a shortage of resources.

Mr Morfin said: “We’ve got some fantastic teachers in our schools who are working so hard to serve these children but the reality is that the current system doesn’t enable those vulnerable children to always get the education that they need.”

Analysing government figures, Save the Children concluded more than 870,000 women looking after a child a home would rather be in work instead.

Urging people to “fundamentally question the figures”, Claire Paye from Mothers at Home Matters told Premier: “Most mothers who are at home full time want to be at home full-time.

“There are some mothers who would like to work but actually they would rather care for their children themselves, or other mothers who would rather have family looking after their children but no family are available so they have to put them into children.

“It’s a really nuanced situation.”

Save the Children concluded that inconvenient, unreliable and unaffordable childcare were major issues for stay-at-home mums wanting to find work.

Steven McIntosh, Save the Children’s director of UK poverty policy, said: “Evidence that the childcare system in England is not fit for purpose keeps mounting up.

“We know that families with pre-school children are hardest hit. The cost and complexity leave them stressed and struggling to make ends meet at the most important time in their children’s lives.
 
“The government must urgently examine how to bring down childcare costs and ensure that families, particularly those on the lowest incomes, can get the support they need. It’s time to make childcare work for families.”

Plans to enforce age checks on accessing adult websites were due to come in this April but have been delayed for a public consultation period. 

Issues needing more thought include how to make sure leaks of users’ details, like those of the adultery site Ashley-Madision, are not repeated and to think about the best way to check someone’s age. 

A spokesperson for the department said: “”We need to take the time to make sure we get it right.”

However, explaining that the Government are still much further ahead in this area than other countries, Vivienne Pattison, a Christian and trustee of Media Watch UK who campaign for a safer internet, told Premier: “I’m really proud of the UK, it’s really leading the world on this one about protecting children in the online space – which great and that’s laudable – but this is a complicated thing which is why it is taking longer to come in than we thought.”

Describing what the checks would be like, Pattison explained: “These are the sort of checks a child, or indeed anybody anybody accessing a site, for example a gambling site, would come across.”

She explained though where the plans currently fail: “The sites that we’re talking about here are sites a that are offering paid content…what it doesn’t do it deal with protecting sites with free content – and that is an area that is growing hugely”

The founder of the Christian human rights charity China Aid, Bob Fu, told Premier over 223,000 Christians were persecuted last year, which is four times more than the previous year.

China Aid’s documented Christian human rights violations also doubled last year and the number of people detained reached 3,700.

“As a Christian you’re always being seen as a suspicious force,” Fu said. “Christianity is portrayed as a foreign, western religion, being suspected [as] a foreign infiltration force to subvert the state power of the Communist Party.”

The crackdown on Christians in China has meant that crosses have been removed from churches, churches have been demolished, and Christians suspected of worshipping at home have been detained.

A house church Christian in China’s southern Guangdong province was recently blacklisted from employment after being arrested for his faith.

Fu said: “Some officials even force themselves to stay in Christian homes overnight to prevent them from midnight secret worship services. We have never seen this kind of extreme persecution since the end of the Cultural Revolution.”

However, Fu said the reason the crackdown has been getting increasingly worse in the past five years is because the number of Christians in China is rapidly growing.
