MLK’s daughter gets award from Pope Francis

Rev King gave Pope Francis “The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr: Advocate of the Social Gospel, September 1948-1963”, as she received an international prize recognizing women involved in non-violence and peace initiatives.

She is the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King and the CEO of the King Centre, seeking to prevent violence through her parents’ legacy.

She tweeted to say she was ‘Truly honoured & humbled”.

According Vatican News, Gabriela Lio, a Baptist pastor said: “In the present racist and xenophobic climate, awarding Bernice King puts the spotlight on the legacy of Martin Luther King’s non-violence, by recovering the courage of a faith that welcomes, encounters, and dialogues.”

Bernice King told Italian press: “The words that the pope recalled of my father, those which resonate in his heart, of peace, non-violence, respect for the dignity of every human being, the centrality of what is human, is truly crucial today.”

Next month will be the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s death.

Package bombs kill two, injure two in Austin, Texas

Two package bombs killed a teenager and wounded two women yesterday in Austin, Texas. Investigators believe the attacks are linked to a similar bombing that killed a thirty-nine-year-old man in Austin earlier this month. Given the victims’ races, it’s possible that the bombings are hate crimes.

In other news, a mother had her legs, her right arm, and the fingers on her left hand removed after she contracted sepsis in an English hospital. Officials later admitted that medical staff did not recognize the warning signs of her infection. She is now suing the hospital.

And a match between two soccer teams in Greece was suspended when the owner of one of the teams stormed onto the field while armed with a gun. He complained to a referee about a disallowed goal, though he never drew his weapon. Once the gun was identified, however, the game was suspended.

If someone passed a law that conflicts between people could no longer be reported in the news, there would be little news to report.

Imagine a world where everyone chose to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). But there are two sides to this commandment: loving our neighbors enough to do only what is best for them and loving our neighbors when they do what is evil to us. Let’s consider the latter today.

Who has hurt you most recently or most deeply? Have that person in mind as we explore God’s word together.

Hating those who hurt us

Jesus described Satan as a “murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44) who came to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). One of his most insidious strategies is to tempt people to hurt us so we will hate them. If we respond in this way, two tragedies result.

One: We hate our enemies when we should pray for them.

Jesus’ command was clear and without exceptions: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). The second imperative fulfills the first.

I once heard missionary Tom Doyle make this profound…

My youngest brother was abused by paedophile priest

Mary McAleese said her brother only revealed the abuse at the age of 49.

She said the physical abuse happened throughout his seven years at St Colman’s College in Newry, where Finnegan – who died in 2002 – taught for 20 years.

Mrs McAleese said: “My baby brother, the youngest of nine children was seriously, physically, sadistically abused by Malachy Finnegan.”

She said her mother only found out three weeks ago.

Four of the former president’s five brothers attended St Colman’s.

She choked back tears as she talked about the impact on her family.

“My wonderful, beautiful and as you can imagine the youngest of the family so incredibly loved by all of us, to think that he suffered and never felt that he could tell anyone,” she told RTE.

Opportunities to take action were missed, she said.

Mrs McAleese added: “It was known and as he pointed out so many people had to have known, so many people who could have done something about it.

“We know the very first complaints about Malachy Finnegan go back to the 1970s, not the 1990s at all which means there is a body of information known to people who could have done something about it but, didn’t.”

Finnegan, who taught at St Colman’s from 1967 to 1976 has been linked to a catalogue of physical and emotional abuse against pupils.

Earlier this month Bishop of Dromore John McAreavey resigned after it emerged he had decided to celebrate…

Elon Musk Admits Tesla And SpaceX Alive ‘By The Skin Of Their Teeth’

REUTERS/LUCY NICHOLSONTesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk

Despite SpaceX and Tesla being successful tech companies, Elon Musk admits that both are just alive “by the skin of their teeth.” At the recent South by South West (SXSW) conference, Musk told the audience that both companies almost went bankrupt in 2008.

“I gave both SpaceX and Tesla a probability of less than 10% likely to succeed,” he said. “At the beginning in 2002, I wouldn’t even let my own friends invest as I didn’t want to lose their money.”

According to Musk, when eBay acquired Paypal in 2002, he made $180 million. He put half of his Paypal fortune, roughly $90 million, into his two companies but the costs keep mounting up.

In 2008, SpaceX saw its third attempt to launch the Falcon 1 fail. The year also saw Tesla come close to bankruptcy two days before Christmas. By this point, Musk only had about $40 million left in his war chest.

This was when he was faced with his most difficult decision yet. Either put all his capital and effort into one company or continue to work on both of them only to watch them both wither. He chose the latter option and against all odds managed to keep both companies afloat.

“I could put it all into one company, and the other company would definitely die, or if I split it into both SpaceX and Tesla, then they both might die,” he said. “And when you put your energy into building something, it’s your baby, so I couldn’t choose. I put the money into both, and thank goodness they both came through.”

Miraculous as it may seem, Musk did not forget how close both of his babies were to bankruptcy. To this day,…

Meghan joins Queen for Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey

The US actress’ attendance at the Westminster Abbey service marks a major milestone for Harry’s bride-to-be, as it the first time she has taken part in an official event with the Queen.

Celebrated across the Commonwealth, the day is an opportunity for each of the institution’s 53 member states to highlight the positive values of the family of nations.

In her Commonwealth Day message, which is printed in the event’s order of service, the Queen praised the “Commonwealth connection” that allows people from different nations to bond and celebrate “diversity”.

London will soon host a gathering of leaders from the family of nations and the Queen, who is head of the Commonwealth, also paid tribute to the biennial event as an example of how consensus can “help to create a future that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous and sustainable”.

With the UK leaving the European Union the importance of the Commonwealth may increase according to some commentators.

Tesla Reveals It Paused Model 3 Production In February For Planned Upgrade

Tesla Motors/Handout via REUTERSFirst production model of Tesla Model 3 out the assembly line in Fremont, California , U.S. is seen in this undated handout photo from Tesla Motors obtained by Reuters July 10, 2017.

Tesla temporarily paused production of its mass market Model 3 in February to facilitate a new upgrade that would improve automation. According to the company, the planned pause was perfectly normal and was common when a manufacturer is ramping up its output.

“Our Model 3 production plan includes periods of planned downtime in both Fremont and Gigafactory 1,” a spokesperson for the company said. “These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates.”

The Fermont facility is currently where the vehicles are built and is located near San Jose, California. On the other hand, Gigafactory 1 is located in Sparks, near Reno, Nevada and manufacturers the batteries packs used in Tesla vehicles among others.

The company did not provide specifics regarding the production upgrade. However, they did inform everyone that there could be more periods of downtime in coming months.

In a shareholder note last month, Tesla said it was aiming for a weekly production rate of 2,500 Model 3s per week. This means that any pause will delay hundreds of deliveries, thousands of which have been pending for over a year. Nevertheless, the company is confident that it will be able to meet that goal.

“We are taking many actions to systematically address bottlenecks and add capacity in places like the battery module line where we have experienced…

Paedophile priests continued to lead services amid poor monitoring, hearing told

Bishop Wallace Parke Benn told the Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse the Rev Roy Cotton was restricted from public ministry to avoid contact with children but it was “difficult” to enforce.

Fiona Scolding QC, the lead lawyer for the Anglican strand of the inquiry, is examining how the Church of England handled allegations of sexual misconduct stretching back to the 1950s, first focusing on the Diocese of Chichester.

She questioned the former Bishop of Lewes at the public hearing in London on Monday over paedophile priests Roy Cotton, his friend Colin Pritchard, Gordon Rideout, Jonathan Graves and Robert Coles – who all operated in the Diocese.

Ms Golding described the sanctions imposed on them as a “stern telling off” rather than anything more substantial.

Bishop Benn, who served from 1997 to 2012, said he had “inherited” a paedophile ring when he took his role in East Sussex and that “hindsight was a blessed thing” when questioned before chairman Alexis Jay and her panel.

Independent Inquiry in Child Sexual Abuse

The inquiry heard Cotton was convicted in 1954 but did not admit this to the Diocese until 2001. He died in 2006 before facing justice for more crimes.

Bishop Benn knew of Cotton’s arrest in November 1997 but not the specifics of the allegations, he said.

He told the inquiry he took steps to restrict Cotton’s contact with children while he was working…
