Bishop renews calls for introduction of minimum alcohol pricing

The Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun pointed to academic research that showed the top 30 per cent of drinkers consumed 80% of all booze.

He also pointed out much of the beer in supermarkets was sold on promotion, priced well below 50p per unit.

He pressed the Government in the House of Lords as a study found supermarket beer is almost 188 per cent more affordable today than it was 30 years ago.

The Scottish Government has confirmed it will set a minimum price for alcohol of 50p a unit from May 1.

The bishop said: “Does the minister agree that a floor in the unit price of alcohol would help yield a more orderly, content and healthy society by bearing down on demand?”

Health Minister Lord O’Shaughnessy said a system was needed to target those drinking “in a way that is very, very deleterious for their health”.

He told peers: “Minimum unit pricing remains under review and the Government will consider the evidence of its impact once it is available.”

He said: “I think the issue here is not about the lack of evidence about whether reducing drinking has health benefits. It’s making sure any new system is implemented in a way that is fair on those who drink sensibly, particularly those with low income.”

Lord O’Shaughnessy pointed out the tax system had been “judiciously” to target problem high-strength drinks such as white cider.

Tory peer and surgeon Lord Riberio said…

Christian reaction to ‘dire’ UK marriage slowdown

New figures released by the Office for National Statistics reveal the number of opposite-sex marriages decreased by 3.4 per cent between 2014 and 2015, to 239,020.

Harry Benson, a Christian at the Marriage Foundation, a group which promotes marriage as a source of family stability, told Premier: “It’s pretty dire.

“If you have less marriage, it means less commitment and it means more family breakdowns.

“We, in Britain, languish at the bottom of a rather shameful league table for family stability amongst the whole of the developed world.

The number of opposite-sex couples choosing to get married has now reached its lowest level since records began in the 1830s or 1840s.

Coalition for Marriage, a group which supports the traditional common-law definition of marriage, said the figures were regrettable and highlighted a need for the Government to better-support marriage via education and the tax system.

Campaign director, Thomas Pascoe, a Christian said: “It is a matter of great regret that the number of marriages continues to fall, exactly as we feared.

“Unless the Government is prepared to put actions in place of warm words on marriage, we will see this great engine of social mobility become purely the reserve of the better-off.”

Thousands of Mourners Pay Tribute to Billy Graham, ‘Epitome of Love,’ at US Capitol

WASHINGTON — Thousands of mourners paid their respects to the late Billy Graham Wednesday and Thursday, following a service in the U.S. Capitol honoring his life.

The world-renowned evangelist, who died Feb. 21 at the age of 99, became the fourth civilian in American history to lie in repose in the Capitol Rotunda.

Shannon Baker of Reading, Pennsylvania, who’s a communications director for the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware, told The Christian Post that the fact Graham was honored in this way by the federal government was evidence that, as Scripture says in Matthew 23:12, “those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

“Today is a perfect example of a man who really humbled himself first before Jesus but then before presidents, before this government, before the people. Before every single person he became like Christ and shared love, grace, peace and mercy,” Baker said. “And because of that, I think he’s being exalted now. God has placed him in a place of honor. So as he lies in honor today, I trust that He is pleased.”

In 1991, Baker became a Christian at age 24, and prior to receiving Christ, Graham was the only Christian leader she knew. When she lived in North Carolina she attended a few of his crusades, and early in her journey of faith she attended a church service in North Carolina where Graham was the guest preacher. Even then, she said she knew he was spiritually significant.

Baker’s husband, Larry, who pastors Bridge Fellowship Church in Shellington, Pennsylvania, chimed in to add: “I wouldn’t doubt it if God uses this day to continue to save people through Billy…

Christian Actor Jim Caviezel Speaks to Liberty University Students: ‘You’re Here for a Reason’

Christian Actor Jim Caviezel Speaks to Liberty University Students: ‘You’re Here for a Reason’

Actor Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in the 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ,” told Liberty University students at the college’s convocation that God has given them an “opportunity.”

“You’re going to be given a power and an opportunity. You’re here for a reason,” Caviezel said this week at Liberty’s Convocation. “Jesus said, ‘If they persecute you, know they persecuted me first.'”

Caviezel was on campus to promote his new film, “Paul, Apostle of Christ,” in which he will portray Luke.

The film opens in theaters March 23.

According to CBN News, Caviezel said God called him at 19 to be an actor.

“I felt this love that I had never felt before, this peace I never felt before,” he recalled. “I heard God say, ‘I’d like you to be an actor.’ … I did not know where to go. I had a call to be an actor, but it was going to take Him to teach me and bring me to the right teachers, the right films to do.”

He was cast in “The Thin Red Line” before he received a call from an agent telling him that Mel Gibson wanted to meet him to discuss casting for “The Passion of the Christ.”

“(Mel told me), ‘If you take this part (of Jesus), you may not work in this town again,'” he said. “I felt fear come into me. That’s one thing about our faith. When that (fear) happens, that’s not Jesus.”

He told students that during filming…

Sunderland vicar comes to the rescue of people snowed-in

Rev Graham Young has offered to get essentials from shops for people who aren’t able to in Sunderland because of the bad weather.

Unrelenting snowfall has ground parts of the UK to a standstill.

Rev Young told Premier’s News Hour how his faith motivated him to help.

“Particularly at times when stuff is difficult I think it’s the Christian imperative that we need to go out and help our neighbours,” he said.

“I’m relatively able and I know that a lot of the people in Sunderland and the area I serve in aren’t.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office’s red weather warning has been extended to South West England and Wales – indicating possible danger to life.

Storm Emma’s rolling in from the Atlantic – bringing more heavy snow and possible drifts of up to 50 centimetres.

The so-called Beast from the East has already caused widespread disruption to road, rail and air travel.

Thousands of flights have been cancelled across Scotland, Wales and the north of England as deep snow and freezing temperatures continue to grip the UK.

Rev Young said both the sub-zero temperatures and people’s faith should motivate them to want to help as well.

He said: “I think the Christian life is a call to prayer and action.

“I don’t think it’s simply a call to prayer and it’s very easy to do one or the other – some…

(Photo:  World Day of Prayer International Committee)A service held in the Philippines for the 2017 World Day of Prayer international observance. The theme for that year was “Am I Being Unfair to You?”; based off of Matthew 20:1-16.

More than one million Christians from different denominations and 140 countries will be taking part in the annual World Day of Prayer observance on Friday.

Initiated and overseen by women, the World Day of Prayer takes place every year on the first Friday of March, which in the United States is observed as Women’s History Month.

In comments emailed to The Christian Post, Rosângela Oliveira, executive director of the World Day of Prayer International Committee, explained that this year’s theme is “All God’s Creation is Very Good!” which is based off Genesis 1:1–31.

“It was developed by WDP women in Suriname, and it calls the world to be caretakers of God’s creation,” said Oliveira.

“Suriname, as a small country, is an excellent voice…

Bibles for the World Helping People Read the Bible in 1 Year With New Book, Radio Program

(PHOTO: PIXABAY/UNSPLASH)

Bibles for the World has released a new book and companion daily radio program to help people read through the Bible in a year.

The Colorado Springs, Colorado-based evangelism group announced the book’s release and program earlier this month. Titled Learn the Bible in a Year, the book was authored by Shane W. Houle.

Houle said in a statement that the purpose of his book is to help people better understand the Scriptures, referencing Acts 8 where the evangelist Philip shared the Gospel with an Ethiopian eunuch by explaining the context of an Old Testament passage.

“When Philip met the Ethiopian gentleman riding in his chariot and reading the prophet Isaiah, he asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?'” said Houle.

“How can I,’ the man answered, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ That’s the premise for this book. I wanted people to be able to easily understand God’s story from beginning to end.”

Bibles for the World President John Pudaite, son of the organization’s founder, noted that they’ve also “launched a series of radio programs based upon the book.”

Bitcoin Hits $11k As Bull Market Hits Plateau

REUTERS/Dado RuvicA copy of bitcoin standing on PC motherboard is seen in this illustration picture, October 26, 2017.

After surging to a seven-week high of $11,000, Bitcoin has reached a plateau and is now relatively flat. However, proponents of a cryptocurrency bull market see the currency rising in the coming months despite the recovery having seemingly run out of steam.

BTC closed the month at around $10,300 offering only marginal gains to January’s $10,221 closing. However, seeing the big picture, the cryptocurrency’s performance in February was spectacular considering it dropped to below $7,000 at the start of the month.

While the currency has flat after reaching its seven-day peak, many are confident that the graph will be on the move once again. Still, it’s a long way from its peak of nearly $20,000 in December, not to mention the $50,000 mark many die-hard fans have been claiming for months.

At this point, market changes aren’t going to be enough for Bitcoin to make full recovery. Its hype-fuelled rise isn’t about to repeat itself anytime soon which means price increases depend on the cryptocurrency gaining mainstream acceptance. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done.

BlackRock Global Chief Investment strategist Richard Turnill believes that while BTC might achieve wide use, the market is still far from mature enough for it to earn a place in a mainstream investment portfolio. The New York-based investment firm manages $6.288 trillion in assets and has been touted as “the world’s largest shadow bank.”

“Crypto markets are highly volatile, fragmented, largely unregulated, and…
