A leader with the Presbyterian Church in Canada has issued a “letter of repentance” to the LGBT community over the denomination’s purported mistreatment of sexual minorities.

The Rev. Peter Bush, moderator of the PCC’s 143^rd General Assembly, which was held last year, wrote in the letter that “we are all harmed” by homophobia.

“No one should ever be harmed for naming their sexual identity. We live in a culture and a world where LGBT persons are bullied, brutalized and sometimes killed,” said Bush.

“Presbyteries and sessions fail to hold church members and church leaders accountable for their hateful acts. For our failure to protect those attacked and brutalized, we are sorry, and we repent. For our ongoing failure to hold people accountable for abuse and hatred, we are sorry, and we repent.”

Bush also said that the church “creates hurt, fear and distrust among LGBT persons who are part of the church” by both past inaction and action.

That is the premise and the title of a new CBS sitcom that premiered Monday (Feb. 26). Based loosely on “The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible,” the 2007 best-selling book by A.J. Jacobs, the show follows a journalist named Chip (Jay R. Ferguson, of “Mad Men” fame) as he tries to live by all the shalts and shalt nots of the Old Testament with the help of his local rabbi (David Krumholtz) and priest (Ian Gomez), who are best friends.

CBS hopes viewers will have the same response the show’s Father Gene has when Chip shows up in his confessional to announce his decision: uproarious laughter.

The 13-episode season tackles lying (does God hate even a white lie?), adultery (to stone or not to stone?), honoring one’s parents (even if they’re bad parents?) and submitting (or not) to one’s husband. There’s even an episode where Chip and his atheist mother-in-law tackle faith versus science and wind up respecting each other.

The Baptist General Association of Virginia has announced that it will no longer directly provide funds to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship after the 1,800-church network changed its policy to allow the hiring of practicing homosexuals for staff positions.

The BGAV, which consists of over 1,400 autonomous churches throughout the commonwealth and worldwide, will stop facilitating cooperative giving to the CBF. The association will now require its affiliated churches with a giving relationship to CBF to provide contributions directly to the CBF national office.

Previously, churches could contribute to CBF through giving to the BGAV Cooperative Program.

“The Executive Board believes this action serves the BGAV, while respecting CBF,” a BGAV statement reads.

The decision was finalized during a BGAV executive board meeting on Monday in Henrico.

Vice President Mike Pence told a luncheon group this week that legal abortion would end in the U.S. “in our time.”

“I know in my heart of hearts this will be the generation that restores life in America,” Pence said at a Nashville luncheon hosted by the Susan B. Anthony List & Life Institute, an anti-abortion organization.

“If all of us do all we can, we can once again, in our time, restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law,” he added.

He said in President Donald Trump’s first year in office, Pence has already seen “great” moves to eliminating legal abortion.

“I see more progress in the last year in the cause of life than I have seen in public policy in all of my years,” Pence said.

Trump has signed legislation that reverses a law from Obama’s term that blocks states from defunding Planned Parenthood. He reinstated a ban on international federal funds for global health organizations that cover or provide education on abortions.

“Let me admonish you as we go forward in this cause in 2018 to understand while we have made great progress, we have much work left to do,” Pence said.

The Trump administration has not been able to pass a law banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The proposal passed in the House, but the Senate failed to approve it in January.
