Offstage and On, Billy Graham’s Ministry Was a Team Effort

Evangelist Billy Graham, who died Wednesday (Feb. 21) at age 99, was the name and face behind the microphone at many a crusade stage. But the members of what became known as the “Billy Graham team” — on and off that stage — were an integral part of his ministry.

Some of the principal members of that team — who worked with the evangelist for decades — reflected over the years on their experiences with Graham in interviews with Religion News Service.

George Beverly Shea

Shea became Graham’s soloist in 1947 and sang at his 2005 New York crusade, rarely missing any in between those dates. Shea died in 2013 at the age of 104.

When Graham approached Shea about being a soloist for his evangelistic meetings, Shea clarified early on that his role was to sing, not to preach.

“I said to him: ‘You’ve asked me to come to sing before your message and I’ve heard about gospel singers, that they will do a verse or two and stop and … preach a little bit, talk for a few minutes. Would I have to do that?’” Shea recalled almost 60 years later in 2005, when he was 96.

Graham chuckled and said, “I hope not.”

Shea responded: “Well then, I’d like to come with you.”

The man known to friends and admirers as “Bev Shea” remembered how Graham’s evangelistic meetings often lasted more days than originally planned.

Of the “big tent” they gathered…

Darryl Strawberry Shares Details of Sordid Past Before He Turned to Christ (Watch)

(Screenshot: Saddleback Church)New York Mets Hall of Fame player Darryl Strawberry visited Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California on February 15, 2018.

Darryl Strawberry is encouraging men to fully submit their lives to God after the former MLB All-Star overcame struggles with drug addiction and alcohol abuse at the height of his career.

Strawberry visited Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, on Feb. 15 where he spoke at a men’s ministry event called “Man Up With Darryl Strawberry.” While the four-time World Series Champion who played for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees over a period of 17 years answered baseball questions during his visit, he also opened up about his sordid past life.

In a conversation with Saddleback men’s pastor Tom Kang, Strawberry spoke in front of a congregation of men about the brokenness that led him to Jesus.

“Having all the success I had, the trophies and all the things that I accomplished as a baseball player could never make me well on the inside. It made me look good from the outside but it never made me well on the inside,” he said. “So being broken I wanted to be healed. I tried everything.”

Church invites couples to bring guns in for blessing

Members at the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland have been asked to attend the service with AR-15 semi-automatic rifle or equivalents such as an AK semi-automatic rifle.

An AR-15 was the weapon used by Nikolas Cruz when he opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland north of Miami on Valentine’s Day, killing 17 people.

Tim Elder, the church’s director of world missions, told Newswatch 16 that AR-15 rifles symbolise the “rod of iron” mentioned in the book of Revelation.

“Now more than ever, good people need to stand up and claim for themselves the tools that can be used to stop that kind of evil,” he said.

The ceremony in Wayne County was planned before the mass shooting.

Elder said the church was not planning to reschedule or cancel the event.

Up to 600 people are expected to attend the ceremony next Wednesday.

“This will be a big thing for us. It’s a new stage for us because it incorporates the rod of iron, as it is in Revelations,” Elder added.

“Revelations talks about the returning Christ ruling with the rod of iron.”

Wallenpaupack South Elementary School, which is located near to the church, is deciding what it will do in response to the ceremony.

‘Conversations’ underway about a UK service to remember Rev Billy Graham

In the same interview, a former colleague of the US evangelist, who died at his home in North Carolina at the age of 99 yesterday, also dismissed the idea of unveiling a statue in his honour.

Harvey Thomas, who spent 15 years working on Graham’s evangelistic events around the world, told Premier: “Billy would not want any kind of physical memorial in that sense.

“I think he would rather see a service of thanksgiving for what God has done than a memorial service for what Billy Graham has done – he was very definite on that.”

While suggesting St Paul’s Cathedral could be a fitting setting for the memorial ceremony, Mr Thomas added that “nobody knows” so far whether it will come into fruition.

He added: “Whether things will happen, I have no idea at this particular point because I think it would probably depend entirely on Franklin Graham or the family as to what they wanted to do, or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association maybe.”

Thomas said that he wanted to see other preachers learn from Graham’s strong work ethic and the trust he showed that God would meet the financial needs of any work He called him to.

Thomas added: “We worked like Trojans.

“Billy used to say to us ‘you [ought to] believe that nothing happens unless God does it but you work as though there is no God’ – and that’s the bit that’s missing in today’s…

Police watchdog to investigate force’s prior contact with girl before church stabbing

The girl had to be treated in hospital for her injuries after an assault allegedly took place in the grounds of All Saints Church in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, on January 23.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has said it is investigating Staffordshire Police’s response to a number of prior incidents.

In a statement it said the inquiry followed a mandatory referral by the force, after the girl was admitted to Burton’s Queen’s Hospital for her wounds, last month.

Derrick Campbell, IOPC regional director, said: “As is widely known, the force is separately conducting a criminal investigation and a man has been arrested and charged in connection with that.

“Therefore it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this time.”

Claudiu Lucien Vacaru, 19, appeared before magistrates in January in connection with the churchyard incident.

He is due to enter pleas to charges of attempted murder, threats to kill and possession of a knife in a public place at Stafford Crown Court on Friday.
