The image is one I’ll never forget: a woman with an Ash Wednesday cross on her forehead holding another woman as they grieve together. The picture was taken on one of the holiest days of the year for many Christians. It shows that, no matter how sincere our faith, none of us is immune from tragedy in this broken world.
Here’s what we know this morning: a shooter opened fire yesterday afternoon at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, fifty miles north of Miami. At least seventeen people have died; fourteen others were wounded, five of whom suffered life-threatening injuries.
The suspected gunman, nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz, began shooting outside the school, then barged inside. According to Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, he “set off the fire alarm so the kids would come pouring out of the classrooms into the hall. And there the carnage began.”
Cruz was taken into custody nearly two hours after the shooting was reported. He is a former student who had been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons.
Jay Golden, whose daughter Rachel survived, told reporters, “You put your kids in school and it’s supposed to be a safe place and this stuff happens all the time.” Sadly, he is right: yesterday’s tragedy was the eighteenth school shooting so far this year, and it’s only February.
“Compassion fatigue” and endurance
When you heard the news from Florida, what was your first response?
If you’re old enough to remember Columbine, I’m sure you remember the unspeakable shock we all felt. When news broke yesterday of the shooting in Florida, the response was different. Reaction was somehow more muted. It seems that we have grown numb to such horrors, resigned to continued assaults on our schools and society.
Counselors refer to this as “compassion fatigue.” This condition is so common in our culture that a “Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project” has been created in response.

Israeli Minister of Culture, Miri Regev (Likud) became the latest dignitary to sign a petition to raise the Israeli flag over the Temple Mount, the Jewish people’s holiest site.
The petition, which was put out by World Likud, a global extension of the Likud political party in Israel, and the French Zionist organization, Israël is Forever reads as follows:

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) has confirmed it has dealt with two cases of alleged sexual misconduct involving children.
SCIAF said one case involved a junior staff member for a joint organisation with other UK and Irish Catholic charities in Ethiopia, and the other a volunteer in Burundi.
The Burundi incident involved the alleged rape in 2012 of a 15-year-old girl by a 45-year-old Burundian man who volunteered for a local partner organisation for SCIAF.
The Ethiopian man accused in the other incident worked in the shared office of SCIAF and its sister UK and Irish aid charities Catholic international development charity (CAFOD) and Trocaire in 2016 when he was accused of sexual misconduct with a boy aged under 16.
Neither of the alleged victims were being helped by SCIAF and the incidents did not take place during any of the charity’s projects.
SCIAF director Alistair Dutton said both incidents were dealt with “decisively” and reassured supporters that the charity has stringent safeguarding procedures.
He said the Burundi man was reported to police, arrested and suspended as a volunteer, and the local charity partner co-operated with the police investigation and provided counselling and legal advice to the girl’s family. The case is since believed to have been dropped.

Footage shared online showing the brutal deaths of 20 Egyptian Copts and one Ghanaian Christian shocked the world in February 2015.
Commenting on the church’s inauguration, Bishop Gregory Mansour from the Maronite Church in the US told the Catholic News Agency: “Any way that the Church of today can honour her martyrs is a blessing.
“The story of these 21 brave men is worth telling.
“In way too many places, Christians are under siege from the dark forces of extreme hatred, and their freedom is conditioned by this hatred.”
The church has been built in the village of al-Our in Minya province, Upper Egypt, where the Egyptian Christians came from.
Relatives had hoped to bury the bodies of the victims during Thursday’s ceremony; however, they are yet to be united with the remains of their loved ones.
Day labourers, the men were rounded up by armed militants during two separate abductions in Libya in December 2014 and January 2015.
During the abductions, ID cards were checked; workers registered as Muslims were set free while Christians were kept behind.

Police say 17 people were killed when a gunman armed with at least one rifle and multiple magazines opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland north of Miami on Wednesday.
Choking back tears as he called for tighter gun control laws, counter-terrorism analyst and former FBI agent, Phil Mudd told CNN: “A child of God is dead.
“Cannot we acknowledge in this country that we cannot accept this?
“Just pray for this city; pray for this school, the parents, the folks that lost their lives.”
Officers confirmed 19 year old suspect Nikolas Cruz, who had attended the school prior to being expelled for disciplinary reasons, had been arrested and taken into custody.
There were frantic scenes of people fleeing from school buildings, as paramedics rushed to treat the injured.
US President Donald Trump tweeted: “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting.
“No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.”
The shooting, which started at around 2.30pm-local time, sent the site in lockdown. Students and teachers were told to stay barricaded in their classrooms.

MESSAGE:
The best category of motion is flying. When you fly, you experience fast and unhindered progress. One thing to note here is that those who fly use a different medium and follow a different path from those using other categories of motion; they go through the air while others go through land or water. Motion through airways make the risk of collision minimal, unlike motion on land which is laden with so many obstructions.
Colossians 3:1 tells us of our spiritual placement, which is why we should be flying in the airways and not moving on land. Beloved, many of us are not flying yet because we are holding so dearly to the things of this world. We need to receive clear headedness by studying the Bible. If you catch the revelation of your true position in Christ, it will affect your motion in all areas of life.
Key Point: If you are up, the things below you can easily come under your control.
