Memorise: “In your patience possess ye your souls.” – Luke 21:19

Read: 1 Samuel 13:8-13 (KJV)

8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

MESSAGE

In continuation of our reflection on the materials with which we build on the foundation of our Christian faith, today we will be looking at patience and godliness as parts of the building blocks of the Christian life (2 Peter 1:5-8). Why patience? Just as knowledge is needed to checkmate the manifestation of misguided virtue, patience is needed to prevent putting the cart before the horse in our Christian walk. Lack of patience is one of the factors that destroyed King Saul. His journey on a downward slope started after he impatiently offered a sacrifice to God by himself, thus acting in the office of a priest, instead of waiting for Samuel. When patience is lacking in a child of God, he or she will repeatedly fail the test of faith. The Bible in James 1:3-4 says:

“3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

Beloved, patience is needed if you will successfully journey through the wilderness of this world to your heavenly home just like the heroes of faith. Take heed to these words of the Holy Spirit in Hebrew 6:12:

“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

It takes patience for prayers to be answered because you cannot stampede God into answering your prayers (Psalm 40:1). I pray that the Holy Spirit will endow you with the patience that is needed to obtain God’s eternal promises in Jesus’ Name.

In addition, godliness is part of the DNA of every child of God, because whoever is born of God has the seed of God in him or her. This is a very important truth you must engrave on the table of your heart if you will not be rising and falling into sin. Under the auction of the Holy Spirit, John the Beloved assures us of victory over sin through the seed of God that is implanted in us. 1 John 3:9 says,

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

If you will finish well and strong, please don’t trivialize these fundamental values of the Christian faith which you profess. My prayer for you is that the Lord will cause you to grow into the full stature of Christ in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please help me to run this Christian race with the required patience and godliness.

Church of England facing thousands of sex abuse allegations

Figures from 2016 revealed that the Church faced 3,300 “concerns or allegations”, vastly relating to “children, young people and vulnerable adults within church communities”.

It is not known how many involved active claims against the church for compensation.

 

Rt Rev Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells, who is the Church’s lead bishop on safeguarding issues, revealed the figures responding to a written question from Kat Alldread, a lay member of the Church’s governing body.

The Times reports details of the abuse complaints will be given to the General Synod, which began its three-day meeting in London on Thursday.

They include the case of former bishop Peter Ball, who was jailed for 32 months in 2015 for historical sex abuse crimes against boys over three decades.

The church commissioned Lord Carlile of Berriew to conduct an independent investigation into the Church’s handling of abuse allegations made against former bishop George Bell, who was also accused of abusing a child.

The report criticised the Church for “rushing to judgment” by paying out compensation of almost £17,000 to his alleged victim.

Revealing that the review cost the Church more than £38,000, Bishop Peter said that bishops would look at ways to “strengthen independent oversight” of the Church’s safeguarding practices.

Eagles Christian QB Carson Wentz Will Give Keynote Address at National Prayer Breakfast


The 2018 National Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for this Thursday evening in Washington D.C., and the keynote speaker will be Philadelphia Eagles Christian quarterback Carson Wentz.


Although Wentz’s year may have previously seemed like it was a year of trials, especially due to his season-ending ACL injury, the year may be proving to be one of Wentz’s most exciting, despite his injury.


First, he was able to cheer his team on to a Super Bowl victory, led by Wentz’s fellow Christian athlete and Eagles backup quarterback Nick Foles.


Then, on February 6, he tweeted that he got engaged to his girlfriend, Madison Oberg.


But, as TheBlaze.com reports, that wasn’t the end to the exciting opportunities before Wentz.


Today, he will take part in the Eagles victory parade through the streets of Philadelphia, enjoying the Super Bowl win with the rest of his teammates and fans.

InterVarsity Press Editor and Author James Sire Dead at 84; Remembered as ‘Keystone’ of Intellectual Evangelicalism

James W. Sire, an author and longtime senior editor of the evangelical publisher InterVarsity Press, passed away on Tuesday evening at age 84.

Andy Le Peau, former associate publisher with InterVarsity, said in a statement that Sire was “a keystone in the intellectual renewal of evangelicalism in the 1960s and 70s, championing the work of Francis Schaeffer and contributing his own landmark books on world views.”

“He was also first to publish other influential figures such as Os Guinness and philosopher C. Stephen Evans. But his finely tuned radar for quality was not limited to the academy,” said Le Peau.

“He had a major influence on the church when he saw the potential in the poetry of Calvin Miller’s The Singer, the power for church renewal in the work of Howard Snyder, as well as the evangelistic insight of Rebecca Manley Pippert.”

Sire authored more than 20 books, mostly on Christian apologetics, and worked as editor for InterVarsity Press for more than 30 years.

The wife of charismatic preacher Kenneth Copeland did not tell people specifically to not take the flu jab but heavily implied that it was unnecessary because Christ has ‘healed’ us. She added that Christians could avoid the flu by telling themselves “I’ll never have the flu”.

“It’s not particularly wise advice,” said Steve Fouch, a nurse from the Christian Medical Fellowship.

“The flu vaccine is one of the few things that could reduce your risks of getting flu or it being a serious illness.”

He told Premier about how Christians balance the power of God and the fact that we live in a fallen world: “We do believe that God heals and it’s quite clear from scripture that prayer for the sick is part of the ministry of the church but at no point does it say anywhere in the Bible that we shouldn’t seek medical help and support.”

Fouch reinforced the point that Copeland’s views seem to have no Biblical backing: “To assume we can just pray and we won’t get the flu has no real basis in scripture and no real basis in evidence or fact.”

Describing how doing both is not wrong, he explained: “By all means pray and trust in the Lord but equally we’re to use sensible means to care for ourselves and our families.

A new study documents the increase in sexual violence incidents at Target stores since the company officially announced two years ago that men who identify as female can enter women’s bathrooms and changing rooms. 

The study, “Gender-Inclusion Policies and Sexual Violence: A Longitudinal Analysis of Media Reports at Target Stores,” was authored by Paul Dirks of the Canadian Woman Means Something campaign and was released Friday. The analysis surveys the relevant literature on sexual violence, and categorizes and charts 220 media-reported sexual offenses in Target locations from 2003 to August of 2017, aiming to determine if any association exists between their gender-identity access policy and reported incidences in their stores.

“The three-season forced-category measurement found a 2.3x increase in the amount of upskirt incidents after the policy, and a 2.9x increase in peeping tom incidents after the policy,” the study found, highlighting the significant rise of voyeurism-related and peeping Tom offenses.

Of the 220 incidents measured, six were counted as two separate offense types, according to the report. Of these 226 offenses, nearly 30 percent were labeled “upskirt offenses,” where perpetrators attempted or did look up the skirt or clothing of a woman; 27 percent were non-upskirt related voyeuristic offenses; and 18.6 percent were classified as “indecent exposures.” Thirty-four percent of all the incidents involved minors. As hundreds of Jewish, Muslim and Christian faith leaders from the United States and abroad descended on Washington for a conference on religious tolerance this week, attendees were quick to note an unexpectedly large delegation from one particular religious group: evangelical Christians.


Speakers at the “Alliance of Virtue for the Common Good” repeatedly highlighted their surprise and delight over the noticeable contingent of evangelicals among the more than 400 attendees at the glitzy, three-day series of discussions and speeches.


The presence of so many evangelicals, a group often associated with a negative view of Islam, provided a welcome backdrop for an event aimed at championing tolerance, many said.


Hamza Yusuf, president of Zaytuna College, America’s first accredited Muslim college, said the evangelical presence was especially notable given recent polling: According to a 2017 poll from Pew Research, nearly three-quarters of white evangelicals say there is a natural conflict between Islam and democracy, compared with roughly half or fewer of those in other major religious groups who express the same view.


White evangelicals were also the major religious group most supportive of President Trump’s 2017 travel ban — sometimes called a “Muslim ban” — barring immigrants and refugees from several Muslim-majority countries, according to…

The Most Rev John Sentamu, was asked in a Q and A on his website if science and religion work in harmony with each other.

 

He answered: “It is an accident of history that set up this apparent conflict between science and religion. Science seeks to understand how God has established the Created Order and this is something which has always fascinated Christians and non-Christian’s alike.

“Indeed down the years the Church has been at the forefront of science. It is sometimes said that science looks at how life happens whereas religion looks at why life happens.

“Every human being however has a longing to know both the how and the why and if we begin to think that we can take one without the other we are denying ourselves some extraordinary insights into the Created Order in which we live.”

The Church of England has promoted projects across England aimed to show people the relationship between faith and science.

The ten projects are part of the Scientists in Congregations scheme, which is part of a wider partnership between Durham University and the Church.
